Searching a pdf document in order to find text parts formatted with a specific font

I have a document that I output as a pdf.
Between the first and last version of this document, I've made some changes, one of those being replacing a font by another one.
Alas, in the final pdf document, under "document properties", "fonts tab", I can still see the first draft font (when it should not be present anymore in my document). It may mean that there's some bit of text that I have not correctly updated.
So I want to identify those chunks of text that are still formatted using the first draft font. I know that it should be done in my main app but, for some (good) reason, I prefer to do this search in the pdf output itself.
So, how could I do this search within Acrobat (I'm using Acrobat XI Pro) ?
Thanks

Possible yes.. a bit klunky.. also yes.
Open the document properties > fonts dialog and write down the PostScript name of the font you're looking for
Open Prefight from the Print Production panel
Select Single Checks (eyeglass symbol)
Select Options > Create New Preflight Check
Call it 'find my font', and in the 'find' box at the top right type "base font". The task will appear in the window below, click Add.
Under 'begins with' enter your PostScript name, then save the Check
Back on the Preflight dialog select the Check and press Analyze.
Double-click the line starting with a red X and in the document itself you will see each instance of that font indicated by red crop marks.

  • How can I search a PDF document for annotations/comments

I have a long 50+ page pdf document with many annotations and commnets.  How can I search this document to find each comment?

    Locating and Searching Comment annotations.
From the open Comments List you can sort and filter comments.
This is discussed in Acrobat X Pro's online Help:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7e42.w.h tml
A sorted / filtered list can be used to generate a PDF comment summary report.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS75E00763-F15A-43a1-85B7-51B920B1181A.w.htm l
You could then use Find on the output summary report.
Using Acrobat X Pro you can embed an index in the PDF.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WSC28D4DBB-6A78-4027-9E04-F50FE411CFB9.w.htm l
Then use the Search tool. With the Search pane open tick "Include Comments".
Search returns have an icon at the left of each instance.
This portion of Acrobat X Pro's online Help shows and describes these.
The third up from the list's bottom is the Comments icon.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WSC28D4DBB-6A78-4027-9E04-F50FE411CFB9.w.htm l
One of these or combinations may met your needs.

  • How can I allow visitors to my website to search within pdf documents created with Acrobat?

I honestly had no idea where to place this question. If I should move it to another forum area please just let me know. I have about 200-300 pdf documents on my website and people are able to search by the title of the file but not for items in the body of the document. Is there a way that is possible?

Are the documents encrypted? If they are not, the common search engines (Google, etc) will normally index all the text in a PDF, the same as if it was a regular Web page. They don't index non-text media within a PDF (images, attachments, etc.) nor will they handle PDF Portfolios.

  • Search engines, .pdf documents

Can (or do) search engines search .pdf documents that are internally linked to and part of a specific website?

    Hi
While most leading search engines can now read and index the content of a PDF, they have certain restrictions and may only index the first N hundred or thousand characters. Further, the file size of a PDF document frequently exceeds 100K and may take a long time to download.
So if you use pdf's keep the documents short.

  • Searching single .pdf document

I have a single .pdf document comprised of some 2500 files
created with Acrobat Pro 8. Almost all the files contain a
"received date" in the form of rmm/dd/yy. If I use the search
window to search for "r04/22/02" I get an accurate list of all
files containing a received date of April 22, '02. If I search for
/02, I get an accurate list of all files containing /02, but not
necessarily as a date prefixed with "r."
What I'd like to do is a search such as "r??/??/02 to
identify all files containing a received date in '02. But searching
with Acrobat Pro 8 yields "no instances" even if those instances
    exist.
After looking at this for a while, it seemed apparent
(strange as it sounds) that Acrobat Pro 8 doesn't have advanced
search options. Adobe Reader 8.1.3, however, seems to have such
options (although wildcard searches are not explicitly listed).
But if I open the .pdf document with Reader 8.1.3, the
wildcard search shown above also yields "no instances." I'm left
wondering if wildcard searches are even possible. Any advice or
    additional information would be appreciated.

    Hello osimp,
Thank you for your post about searching in Acrobat 8.
You should know that these forums are specific to the
Acrobat.com website and its set of hosted services, and do
not cover troubleshooting the Acrobat family of desktop products.
Any questions related to the Acrobat family of desktop
products would be best suited in the Acrobat Forums:

  • Find text and replace with a pdf stored in the same folder

    Hello,
I have a catalog that is updated every so often.  I have written a script to find/replace the text from a .txt file.  but i have a pdf that i want to insert that is part of it as well.  Inside the .txt file i have the name of the document.  and the pdf is stored inside the same folder as the original .indd and the .txt file.
can someone point me at some examples on how this could be done.
    Thanks

I use this script: it puts a txt in a text frame, check the overflow and find/replace some words with a pdf. Hope this is helpful.

Thoughts are to allow groups of individuals mobile numbers to be shared across larger organizations, from within a PDF document, that the mobile numbers would be clickable, and open up a Text or instant messaging application on either the computer, tablet, or smart phone, for instant communication.

  • Can't find text in distilled file, using some fonts

The products I have are Mac OS 10.6.8, Acrobat X and 9, and Word 2011 and Apple Pages for Mac; Acrobat 9 and Word 2007 for Windows XP.
There are numerous ways to create PDFs on both platforms, whether through save as or creating a PostScript file and distilling it. The problem is that with docs I have using Calibri, Cambria, and Candara, if I distill a PostScript file made from Mac Word or Pages, neither Acrobat nor Apple Preview can find text in the resulting PDF, whether the file distilled with Mac or Windows Distiller. (Meaning a "find" for a string comes up as not found.)  All other combinations are okay, even writing a PS file in Windows Word and distilling with Mac Distiller.
I mention the fonts specifically because most of the time I use OTF faces, which always work. I even tried using the Windows TTF versions in the Mac operating system -- same failure.
And even if I force these fonts to be embedded in the Distiller job options, still no joy. If I take so much as a comma and set it to an OTF, I can find the comma. Also, Acrobat *can* find Arial text in a Visio flowchart placed in the Word doc. I don't know how the author placed it there, but it's probably copy from Visio, paste into Word.
The reason why I care about this is because the distilled PFDs are just a tiny bit better looking on the screen than other options, such as "Save as PDF" from the Mac OS Print dialogue. The only other one that looks as good is the Create PDF button in Windows Word, but I would rather not have to use Windows just to get a better-looking PDF.
    So to summarize:
Mac app > write PS file > Mac Distiller = fail
Mac app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = fail
Win app > write PS file > Mac Distiller  = okay
Win app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = okay
Mac app > save as PDF directly > okay
This might not be a problem with Distiller per se; it could be the Mac OS engine that creates the PS files. You see, I had heard that Apple used their own internally developed engine for the options to save PDF files directly, but was using Adobe code when one used the option to write a PostScript file, so that's why I'm so surprised and disappointed it fails.

Hmmm. In what way are Distilled PDFs "a tiny bit better looking on screen" than those made by OS X?
You are viewing both in the same app and platform?
And you're referring to font display?
What settings are you using in Distiller which you think might have some bearing on this?

OS X's native graphics drawing environment, Quartz, is essentially a "Display PDF", so creating a PDF file is a very simple procedure.
Writing PostScript for printing uses Apple's own cgpdftops CUPS filter. I doubt there is any "Adobe code" as such, and I dispute the implication that "Apple code == bad; Adobe code == good", which you seem to suggest.
The specifications for PDF and PostScript are clearly documented, and it should be easy for anyone to follow them.
However, the fact remains that when Apple converts these MS fonts to PS, something goes wrong. It may be a bug in Apple's code; or it may be that Apple it strictly interpreting font data which MS is playing fast and loose with. Windows' own PS export would no doubt be designed to work with the looser implementation in MS's fonts. This is just hypothetical of course, though is in keeping with tradition.
What you could do is use a decent text editor like TextWrangler (free from BareBones software) to compare the PostScript code from Windows and OS X.
You could also look a the Properties tab in Acrobat of the PDFs, and compare the font encoding.
You could also test running out PostScript from any other app on OS X that you have using those fonts.
However, I think it is unlikely that you will see resolution unless MS releases a new version of their fonts, or some new version of OS X makes an amendment to fix the bug or cater for the MS issue. Perhaps Lion will do this; perhaps it won't.
Are you using the versions of these fonts that came with Office 2011 for Mac? What happens if you use the Windows versions of the fonts on OS X?

  • Anyway to Find text and replace with variable FM10?

I've just been informed that the current documentation set I've done will have different versions. I've created a brand variable, but I was wondering whether there was a quick way to find the text I need to convert, then replace it with the variable I've created?
    Mark

Unless Fm10 is different than FM7 in this regard, you can copy an instance of the NewBrand variable in the text flow, then do an
    Edit > Find/Change
    Find [Text:] [OldBrand]
    Change [By Pasting]
The usual issue is that each paste is not just pasting the variable, but also pasting the formats of the source instance of the variable. If all instances of the target text are the same format, say "Body", then this is not a problem.
Otherwise, use the [Change & Find] button. Tweak formats as you go.
I imagine that there are aftermarket enhancements for this. In FM10, you might even be able to script it, but it the number of changes is manageable, [Change & Find] suffices.

  • Can I search in pdf document on adobe reader under android ?

    The title is self-explanatory

    Hi,
I couldn't find the device you mentioned among my test devices but here's the steps I followed on another device:
    1. Downloaded the file from the link you mentioned to my PC. Attached it to a mail and sent it to myself.
    2. Opened the mail on my Android device.
    3. When asked to open the file in the viewer, chose 'Adobe Reader' (11.5.0.1 build 98311)
    4. Searched for the word 'the'  in the pdf(by selecting the search icon which looks like a magnifying glass in the top toolbar).
    5. I get a screen like the one attached.
    6. If i tap on a particular snippet(the small portions of the text on different pages), I am taken to that particular page.
    7. To see all the results again, I can tap on the search icon again and the same results will show up.
Please let me know if you don't observe the same behavior.
    Thanks.

  • When attempting to Sign a pdf document I am not finding the option to use an image, I'm only able to use a digital signature. I want to use a jpg file.

I click on Fill & Sign Tools, then I click Place Signature. The instructions show a dialog box with four options however that does not happen. I am only presented with the option of importing a digital signature. How do I get to the option of importing an image (jpg) signature?
    Robert

I assume you have a digital ID set up already. When you sign then you need to select how the signature is to appear and you can then select create new appearance. Not sure if this is what you are dealing withage.

  • How can I change a PDF document to have an enlarged text area and smaller margins?

I've just been reading a long discussion initiated by a guy who wanted to recompose a PDF file to print in fewer pages. I'm not asking about that. I'm aware that Acrobat Pro 9 will not recompose the pages of a pdf for you; as someone said, it's not a word processing program. I want to copy a PDF to a new file with an enlarged text area and smaller margins, so I can read it more easily. My eyesight isn't so great.
I'm trying to print a decision of the US Supreme Court, for my study. The problem is that these PDF files of such decisions are composed in 10-point type with generous margins, in folio-size pages smaller than 8 1/2 x 11". When you open PDF files of these decisions, you get extremely wide margins and relatively small type. Essentially, I'd like to re-rasterize the document so it prints on my 8 1/2 x 11" paper in a larger apparent type size, but in the same high resolution as the original. By the way, the decision I'm working on is almost 200 pages long, so I don't want to do this, obviously, in a page by page manner.
I guess I could do this in Photoshop, by blowing pages up and cropping them. Photoshop does a good job of eliminating the jaggies when you do this. But it would seem better to re-rasterize the pages from the PDF source file. So would any reader be kind enough to explain this process to me? (I'm fairly savvy in Photoshop, Illustrator, and computer printer concepts, but a complete newb in Acrobat.)

If you just want this for printing, one thing you can easily do is crop all of the pages to remove the margins. For example, you can rop 2" off the left and right sides, and 1.5" off the top and bottom. Then print using a Page Scaling of "Fit to Printable Area".
To crop in Acrobat 9, select: Document > Crop Pages
be sure to select All for the Page Range.

  • Older PDF documents are not opening in .msg (outlook) format

    Hi,
I’m using adobe reader 11 and outlook 2010. I converted all emails that need to be transferred to PDF and then ‘delete’ the original emails from Outlook.  It converts to pdf (so one pdf file can have 230 emails in them).  we then open the pdf which contains all emails.  Some emails have attachments.  I can open the attachments which are word, excel, pdf BUT NOT emails (.msg). I just need to be able to open the ‘.msg’ from pdf attachments. It used to allow me to open before. Its showing “Can’t read” in outlook when I click the .msg attachment from PDF. Then I uninstalled the PDF reader 11 and installed 9.5 version. Now it’s showing “you don’t have appropriate permission to perform this operation” in outlook.
Please advise me to recover these files.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I assume you have two pdf files and they have different contents.
    Let’s say 1.pdf and 2.pdf.
Please try to check it as following:
    1.
    Upload 1.pdf to SharePoint site
    2.
    Delete 1.pdf in local
    3.
Change the name of 2.pdf to 1.pdf
    4.
    Upload 1.pdf to SharePoint site
    5.
And then could you get the two version of this document with different contents?
Please let me know the result.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks!

  • PDF created using Java iText package - Text not editable and not displaying font properties on Acrobat

    Hi,
I have an issue in editing the text and viewing the font properties of a text region on a PDF created using Java iText package.
I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and the option Tools -> Advanced Editing -> TouchUp Text Tool.
The strange behaviour is that, I have 2 PDFs created out of the same base PDF and text added via Java iText package with the same Text, Font and other properties.
One of the PDF has the text region editable on Acrobat but the other one has the text region which is not editable.
But both the PDFs are editable via Adobe Illustrator.
I have attached both the PDFs for your reference
    PDF_Editable.pdf - Editable on Acrobat
    PDF_Not Editable.pdf - Not Editable on Acrobat
Any help or insight to find out the difference/issue with the PDF which is not editable via Acrobat would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

You don't have direct control of the leading of a multiline text field. A common approach is to control the background color of the field with JavaScript since the lines are not really needed when the field is used in Reader/Acrobat. They may be useful when using the form by hand. For more information, see the posts by Max in this topic: http://acrobatusers.com/forum/forms-acrobat/how-do-i-use-multi-lined-text-fields-over-prin ted-line-area-existing-form
