Storing carriage return and other special characters in a TestStand variable and passing to LabVIEW
I am using TestStand step to call a LabVIEW VI that writes commands to a serial device. The device expects a carriage return at the end of the command. I can create a constant string in TestStand with the carriage return, e.g., "ATA\x0D" and pass that to a LabVIEW string control which shows ATA\r and the VI works properly.
To provide consistency and flexibility in my code, I want to store the terminator character(s) in a TestStand variable. However, when I try to use an expression to create the command string, i.e. "ATA" + "Locals.Terminator", where Locals.Terminator is set to "\x0D", my LabVIEW VI string control shows "ATA\\x0D" which doesn't work. And when I try Locals.Terminator set to "\r", the LabVIEW string control shows "ATA\\r" which doesn't work either.
Is there a way to store special characters in a TestStand variable and pass them to LabVIEW as special characters? I saw in another post that if you edit the TestStand variable by pressing Cntl-Enter, it will store the newline \n properly and it can be sent to LabVIEW - that works for me as well for \n. But I need to send a carriage return.
I've attached my test sequence and the corresponding LabVIEW VI with a string control.

Thanks for your detailed explanation and examples. In TestStand, change the String parameter's String Type to Binary String instead of ASCII. Then it will pass the desired value.

Passing values w/special characters in URL into an interactive report
Hello,
I have a problem and Ive been all over these forums and reading/trying everything I can to get something to work. I have a page that has a field called Name Search. The field is a TextField with autocomplete type. If I select a company name that contains special characters, like 'Blue Shield of California Life *&* Health Insurance Company', when I click go button (using a branch), it is supposed to pass this value into the URL to populate IR_COMPANY_NAME on the interactive report page to create the report filter. However, when it goes to the IR page, it actually filters on 'Blue Shield of California Life *& amp;* Health Insurance Company' with 'amp;' instead of & and doesnt find any matches. In the page source it is actually 'value="Blue Shield of California Life *& amp; amp ;* Health Insurance Company." Here is the URL that it produces:

The interesting thing is that I have another page that has a clasic report that lists all compnaies by name and the company_name is a link that passes the company name into the exact same IR and it works fine. I have modified every field involved changing between encoding, no encoding, changing display types (Standard Report Column, Remove HTML and escape special characters, etc). I have also attempted to encode the value myself prior to sending it to the next page. I have tried variations of the htf.escape_sc etc. I have also tried adding \&P2_COMPANY_NAME.\. I have also tried adding pl/sql to create a collection to store the values and then pl/sql to fill the values on the report page. It gives me the success message I setup, but it never actually fills the value.
I am also having problems with another field that has a comma in it. I will wait to address that one to see if I can fix this first with hopes that it can be resolved by whatever I do to fix this issue.
Any suggestions? I appreciate any feedback!

Yes, I forgot to mention that. It does come from a table, but company_name is not unique in that table. Meaning, it wouldnt know which ID to pass. Perhaps I should seperate the name out into another table and then I could pass the id. I was just hoping to get this to work programatically since the links from classic reports actually work correctly. I am starting to think this is a bug. This issue appears to have been addressed to make the links from reports pass the & correctly, but not in the branching?
I have attempted to replace and then re-replace but I couldnt get it to work with IR_ fields as the filter fields are generated by the Interactive Report region. Do you have any insight working with those? Are there any tricks to it that I might be missing? -
Special characters vanish when passed to webservice on Oracle AS 10gR2
I've created a rpc webservice with an "echo" method. It has a single String parameter and simply returns this parameter. I've been using JDeveloper 10.1.2 and deployed this webservice onto OAS 10gR2 (10.1.2). To access it in client application I used proxy generated by JDeveloper. Problem appears when I pass the value containing special characters like < or >. Echo method receives this value without these characters. So client sends something like <hello> and webservice sends back hello instead of <hello>. I've tried to replace < and > with '& lt;' and '& gt;' but then & character is lost. So from '& lt;hello& gt;' client receives lt;hellogt;.
This problem doesn't appear when I deploy webservice to Oracle AS 9.0.4 so I suspect it has something to do with AS configuration.

and look for <escapeOutput> parameter - "Controls whether control characters in the response from the web service (such as '<' and '&') are escaped in the portlet response so that they display in HTML" - the default value is on, meaning special characters are escaped - this parameter applies only to Oracle Portal, but maybe there is a similiar parameter for AS -

How to handle special characters in Apex
Hi ,
In my application I have two regions - one is Report Region (Interactive Report) and other one is HTML region with two text items - Empno and name
My Report has two columns Empno(varchar2) and Ename(varchar2).
When I click the edit link in the report column, the empno should have a read only EMPNO value and ename is a text field with ENAME value.
When I run my application I have encountered the following problems :
1. if my empno has special characters like ' # ', the characters after that is not getting displayed
2. if my empno has special characters like ',' - the characters after comma is treated as a next texitem value

Create a surrogate primary key on the table that is an immutable discrete numeric identifier and only use this as a URL parameter. In target pages/regions, use this PK value to retrieve the required data from the table. -

I have created an classic SQL Report with one of the columns being a decode that gives a value 'Post'(the value should be highlighted in Red) on one condition and 'Pre' on another. I have followed the advice given in the page (URL provided above) , i.e. I have changed Strip HTML to 'No', changed Display as to 'Display as text (escape special characters, does not save state)'. I have also passed this value back to the same page to be stored in a page item each time a link (another column in report) in report is clicked. I have tried passing it as #DEADLINE# and \#DEADLINE#\. The issue I face is, instead of the value being highlighted in Red, it gets passed back as a string holding the value 'Post'. Is there any way I can get this to display as it should without the Strip HTML being changed to 'Yes'.

You can't pass HTML and CSS around in URL parameters.
I suggest you pass *2* values in the column link: the MGR ID and a simple class or colour value computed by the DECODE in the report. I've suppressed the first version of the report and created a new one that does this:
decode(dept.deptno, '30', 'c00', '000') highlight The link column now passes the MGR ID and the HIGHLIGHT colour (red when the condition is satisfied and black when it is not).
I created another hidden and protected page item <tt>P0_HIGHLIGHT</tt> as the target for the highlight value, and used the Pre/Post Element Text properties of the <tt>P0_G_MGR</tt> to wrap it in a <tt>span</tt> whose colour is changed using the <tt>P0_HIGHLIGHT</tt> value as a subtitution string:

I am trying to update the Description from JSP form. Through JCO we are calling the RFC of ABAP. We are passing these description from Java to RFC of ABAP and this RFC update the text in Database.
We have noticed that if there is some special character in description like as : or , complete description is not getting updated in to the SAP database.
Can anyone help me how to handle these special characters in Java. There may be N number of special characters. We want to generalize it. We want to replace these characters by s and z respectively.
For example : We want to update this description.

Apparently your SAP database isn't configured to support Unicode. That would be the first solution to your problem, but I can imagine it's a bit drastic to convert your DB.
A second solution would be to encode the input description to ASCII before storing it in the database. When reading from the database, decode again to Unicode. This way, no information is lost. A suitable encoding would be Base64. e.g.

Special characters in XML (UTF8, escapes etc)
This may seem like a simple problem, but I'm kind of a slow learner, so any help would be appreciated.
I'm generating XML output via ordinary PL/SQL procedures i.e. not using the Oracle XSQL stuff. The data is built up into a XML document, which will be parsed within the server, then passed out to a client, probably as a CLOB.
The data may contain "special" characters such as "<&>" and so on. Is there an existing function to translate these into an "XML-safe" form within the text, or do I need to trap and translate them individually?
Also, the database may contain foreign characters e.g. Thai or Chinese. Will this be handled transparently by my XML-extraction stuff - which just selects the data from the tables and writes it to a CLOB inside XML tags - or do I have to do something to make sure the XML comes out in a safe UTF format?

The out put is the if i am giving a word with german special characters for eg:
Betriebsübersichten it first gets converted to bytes and then passes through method WDResouseFactory.createResourse(.....) which creates an RTF file and finally in the RTF file it appears as Betriebsbbersichten the special character is not displayed correctly.
i came to knw that while converting into bytes we have to make it RTF supported encoding.ie for eg generatedText.getBytes('cp1252').i even tried with other charactersets like ISO-8859,cp1253 and so on but none of them worked.
It would be really great if you could suggest the needful.

Try to show special characters in a JLabel
Hi everybody,
I have a big problem with special characters and to display them.
At the moment I'm writing an Applet where you can type in
in a JTextField stuff like \u0398 \u03B6 \u03A6 \u03C9 \u03BE.
Then you press a JButton and the method TextField.getText();
gives the input to a String. After that with the method
Label.setText(String);
i want to display the special characters, but they weren't shown.
Instead of its the typed in characters (\u0398 \u03B6 \u03A6 \u03C9 \u03BE) appear.
If I hardcode it, it works and every special character i want is displayed.
Label.setText("\u0398 \u03B6 \u03A6 \u03C9 \u03BE");
So what is wrong?

I think I have an idea of what is going wrong with your code:
The text in the JTextField is stored as a String in the Document. However, each character typed into the field will be stored separately, that means that the six characters typed have to be merged into one. So try creating a new String object from the textfield data and pass this one to the label:
JLabel label;
JTextField textField;
label.setText(new String(textField.getText()));
I don't know whether this works, but this is the only idea comming to my mind right now.
