Self-propagating ampersands in GREP in a paragragh style

Hello. I'm using GREPs in (InDesign CS6) paragraph styles to color specific words and have hit an odd thing when the words I'm trying to color include an ampersand (&).
The style works fine the first time, but if I call up the paragraph style, additional ampersands start appearing in the GREP expression, not just for the expression I'm changing, but other expressions that include an ampersand as well.
Example: I enter ^(?i)track \& field
The next time I edit a grep in this style, the grep changes to ^(?i)track \&& field. Then ^(?i)track \&&& field.
So I take out the extra &'s, only to see them come back again. And having a space or not having spaces on either side of the ampersand doesn't
affect the problem. I've tried using \s instead of the space, but it makes not difference. I've also tried dumping my InDesign preferences and exporting the document as an .idml file in an effort to clear out any funkiness.
Has anyone seen this? Thanks!

But perhaps you try this instead:

GREP for changing paragraph style?

Okay folks, I have another one for all you smart people out there. I think GREP can be used to change formatting in the following instance, but I have no idea how to set it up.
I have a very long document, essentially a phone book-type listing of names, phone numbers, addresses, well over 150 pages' worth. The paragraph styles are fairly simple, only two per listing. The name/phone number is bold with a right hand tab with leader dots to a phone number that is flush to the right side of the column. The following lines are flush left, not bold, but indented 6pts. I've placed the text file and assigned the entire thing the NameListing paragraph style. I'd like to use GREP to find the address lines and change them to the NameListingAddress paragraph style.
Here's a screen shot to give you an idea. The left column is formatted correctly with both styles, the right column is "raw", all paragraphs formatted with the NameListing paragraph style.
Is this an appropriate application for GREP? If so, how do I set it up to only change the paragraphs that "don't have tabs"? It would save me a crapload of time.

If your intent here is to use the character style to trigger a variable, as I belive it is based on your other thread, you MUST apply the character style up to the first tab to pick up the text at the start of the paragraph. There are two approaches to automating the formatting after that, but it may be too late for you to be much help.
In cases where every listing has the same number of lines it makes sense to use a unique paragraph style name (not necessarily format -- base on on another) for each lline and make it its own paragraph. Set up "next styles" to rotate through the list so each line is assigned the correct style based on the style of its predecessor. You get the rotation to sart over by making the first line style the next style for the last line. This works for manual entry and can be applied to an entire block of placed text in a single operation by selecting the text, then right-clicking the name of the first style to be applied and choose Apply <stylename>, Then Next Style.This ONLY works if you have exactly the same number of paragraphs in each listing.
The other option is to use forced line breaks instread of paragraphs and use one style for the entire listing. Set a left indent and negative first line indent, create a character style for the part of the first line that you want to appear in your header and apply it Up To ^t^n (that's a little-known trick -- if you enter more than one character in the trigger for a nested style it will activate on the first instance of any of the characters listed that occurs, so for example if you enter the word cat, your style will end on the first, c, a or t that appears inthe paragraph. ^t is the metacharacter for tab, and ^n is for forced line break) so that the style will end at either the tab, if present, or the forced line break if there is no tab (if you use a right-indent tab instead of a regualr right aligned tab [tricky to do a leader, but that's another discussion] substitute ^y for the ^t), then add a nested Line Style for one line. That line style should use a second character style that is based on the first character style you created for the name text and has no other attributes if you want the line to be the same from end to end. Sounds more complex than it is, and will work for listings with variable lenghths. The trick is to repalce your paragraph returns with forced line breaks, and will require a little thinking.
If using separate paragraph styles for each line, you'd use the same technique of a nested style up to a tab for the first line, but there is no need to get fancier since it will apply to the whole line if there is no tab. The paragraph style, in this case, would carry all of the bold and size formatting (and no need for any indents), and the character style would be nothing more than a name that will allow you to use it in the variable.

If you want the script to create character styles: Bold , Italic, Bold Italic, etc, and replace local formatting with these styles, use scripts in post #3.
But if you want find and change words, or/and replace local formatting with styles defined by you, use FindChangeByList script.
If the latter, I recommend you to download and install Record Find Change script (written by Martin Fisher).
Then choose settings you need in Find-Change dialog – make sure they work as expected – and run Record Find Change script. A Notepad/TextEdit file will pop up with a line containing the recorded setting. Copy it, open FindChangeList.txt, delete the contents of this file and paste the line you just copied (or add it to the bottom of the file).
Repeat the process for all find-change operations you need.
Finally run FindChangeByList.jsx to make all changes in one go.
However, while using Record Find Change script, you may encounter a problem: it doesn’t record paragraph and character styles placed inside a group. But you can write references to such styles like so:
appliedParagraphStyle:app.activeDocument.paragraphStyleGroups.item("Style Group 1"). paragraphStyles.item("Paragraph Style 1")

GREP question re: character style

I am trying to take a block of text and change everything in that text to a certain character style. What's the correct GREP expression to do that? I know I could just highligh the text in question and apply the character style, but I need to use this in a FindChangeByList script, so I need to do it using GREP expressions. Thanks.

What I'm really looking for is this. When I want to format a paragraph in a paragraph style, sometimes there are underlying character styles that I need to clear first. So I higlight the block of text, go to character styles and select [None], thus clearing that text of any character styles. Then I apply my paragraph style. I've found that if I don't do this, I get unexpected results.
I know that the active characer styles is always the last character style that was used, but I wish that the default was simply the [None] character style. I'm forever having to go back to [None.]
I'm trying to build some scripts that automate this for me, but perhaps there's a much easier way to think about this problem.

Paragraph style: numbered + capital letters
GREP: $.+?$ so that everything between () is written italic.
When the list of ingredients is too long, I need to go to the next line (shift + enter). Then it is like if the GREP gets broken...
I have tried to put a \n but it doesn't work...

With GREP, is there a way to assign a character find/change to a p style?

I'm looking for more ways to automate text styling in the magazine I produce. In InDesign, I can assign find/replace command strings in the Find/Change GREP window, but I've found no online source that tells me how to find/replace characters using GREP WITHIN a p style. It seems as if the latter GREP capability is limited to changing character styles and can't search and replace actual characters.
Example: I have a list of recipe ingredients. I want to replace the quantity (one to three digits) at the beginning of each ingredient with a tab-digit(s)-tab combination. In Find/Change, I can enter "\d+\s" and replace with "\t$0\t" but I don't see a way to assign that capability to a p style. I want this find/change to occur automatically any time copy is added to text tagged with the Recipe Ingredients paragraph style, so I don't have to keep running a Find/Change each time we edit the page. One power user has told me it's not possible. Any insight or alternative solution would be much appreciated.

Your power source has it right, GREP Styles can only apply character styles to the text it finds.
And there is no easy way to have text replaced automatically -- you would still need to run a script, or press a hotkey or something.

Need GREP To Identify Multiple Patterns

I am attempting to format text by identifying it with GREP patterns, then applying styles via InDesign's paragraph and character styles. I was able to get half of what I wanted using Nested Styles, but that solution doesn't seem to fit most of the cases in the files with which I am working. Here are the patterns I am trying to identify in a single GREP statement::

Over 00% OFF
$00.00
00.00
One of the above four patterns will always appear at the beginning of the paragraph. I want the GREP statement to identify the text that matches any or all of those patterns, so that I can apply the text styles. I was able get partially there by doing the first two "% OFF" scenarios using nested styles, then trying to do the "$00.00" and "00.00" with a GREP statement. I could never get the grep statement to completely work. Either it would ignore the "$" sign, or the first two digits before the decimal place. And I'm not even sure mixing Nested Styles and GREP is a wise way to go. Can someone assist me in getting a GREP statement that will identify any of these potential combinations. The document I am working on has other patterns that differ from the four above, but if I can get the above four, that will be about 80% off the project, and will minimize a lot of hand editing to get the font treatments correct.

Thanks for your samples. First of all, live isn’t always easy ;-)
Apply some colors to your character styles and you will see, that your first style isn’t honored (OFF > off)
Second: It is a big difference for grepstyles, if you enter a softreturn in the same paragraph or you enter a hard return (new paragraph).
Since the scope of grepstyles is paragraph based, your second para did not know the first one.
So in your special example you could use (with|coupon)[^\r]+
That means, search for: with or coupon, followed by anything that is not a hard return, multiple times.
But if you have other phrases, this may not work or must be extended.

GREP: Bolding a title in quotes at the beginning of a paragraph

I trying to use GREP within a paragraph style to bold the title of a listing at the start of a paragraph. I want to limit it to the first set of quotation marks, and leave any other characters within quotes in that paragraph un-bolded.
I used the expression below, which i thought would start at the beginning of a paragraph (^), left quotation mark (~{), any character, any number of times (.+), followed by a right quotation mark (~}), followed by a space (\s), zero or one times, shortest match (+?).
^~{.+~}\s+?
Unfortunately, it bolds everything through the next right quotation mark. (See sample below).
What can I add to the expression to restrict the GREP to find just the first set of quotes? These would be titles that may have multiple words or numbers in the title.

If you want to use GREP, try this one:

or delete the space from yours
^~{.+~}

GREP - Positive Look Behind - find text beyond space

I have a GREP in a paragraph style with a positive look behind. This search finds characters up to a space and applies a style, but does apply the style beyond a space.
What do I need to include in my GREP search to find text that follows a space? TIA

Right. It only finds upper and lower case letters, so the match ends at anything that isn't one of those. Do you want to match to the end of the paragraph? You could use (?<=\#).+
for two words use (?<=\#)[\l\u]+\s[\l\u]+
for a match for both one or two words (two if there are two, otherwise only one), try (?<=\#)[\l\u]+(\s[\l\u]+)? (not tested)

Another (easy) GREP request

I would like to use GREP to apply a style to all paragraphs that have 45 characters or less. Can this be done? Do I need to use GREP for this?
(I should probably pay you guys for the amount of time you have saved me with these GREP requests.)

No I don't want to apply a style up to a certain point in a paragraph. I want to apply a paragraph style to all paragraphs that are 45 characters or less. These paragraphs are headings, and the longest one is 45 characters.

A couple of months ago I stumbled upon this problem, but handfixed all entrances in Makefiles recursively, changing explicitly '/bin/sh' on '/bin/bash' (although, /bin/sh is a link on /bin/bash). Now I had do deploy archlinux on another machine and here's the problem, again.

I am upgrading a Mac OS X Server 10.5 to Moutain Lion

I purchased the Snow Lepoard CD from Apple like instructed too and when I load Disk I get an error that OSX server cannot be updated without a clean wipe, this will cause me to lose all my data or is there a way to setup Moutain Lion on a Mac Pro and Migrated users, shares and permissions? Bascially I am trying to start them from scracth and redesing the mac network, right now I am more concerned about losing shares and ACL's

Ouch. This is a rough project. 10.5.x to 10.6 to 10.8. Lots of things can go horribly wrong.
I have a suggestion. You mention this is on a Mac Pro. If you have some open slots inside the unit, why not just buy a few extra drives. Then install 10.6.x on the spare drive, boot from it and then install 10.8. This why you can build a full new OS without causing pain or suffering on the original drive. And, when things get crazy, just reboot into the original system.
What services are you running on the server? If just file services, it likely makes more sense to simply start clean. ACLs have changes so much between 10.5 and 10.8 that you will likely be finding your self propagating permissions anyway. And Open Directory has also changed a ton. Best to just start fresh if possible. How many users do you have?

Ok just wondering-- virus protection?

i guess i don't know enough yet but i have been told that mac don't get spyware and viruses. i want to know if this rumor is true. i guess my question is should i invest in some virus protecting so that my mac is not over run.

Currently, there is no threat in the wild that can do the type of damage that windows based viruses typically do. There have been a couple of proof-of-concept viruses but nothing more. A mac virus simply can't spread the same way that a windows virus is able too. Self propagation is very difficult for a variety of reasons - they rely more on social engineering to spread.
That being said it is definately possible than someone will eventually create something worthy of calling a real OS X virus. And as more people start running Mac OS X the threat because more dangerous.
Personally, I own Norton AntiVirus 2005 - but it is not running on my Mac. It is sitting in a zip archive because I don't believe the threat is large enough to install it (AntiVirus programs eat up system resources and currently I believe that to be a larger concern than Mac viruses). But I do own it because evetually something will happen.

I know relatively nothing about viruses for Mac, so please bear with me, but as a Windows user who wants to convert to Apple, when you say, if in doubt... 'don't install'. On Windows you don't have any choice, they install without your knowledge/approval, MOST of the time, Admittedly there are many people who click 'OK' when they are told to, and get one of those fake virus scanners installed and then held to ransom, which I notice has now come to your world too, but are you saying that this cannot happen on a Mac?
If you personally choose not to install a programme you will never be able to get a virus and don't need an AV programme. There are many posts about malware on here too. But yet people say you can't get anything on a Mac. Curbing viewing habits are fine, but people are getting caught out on these threads from the most unexpected sites, via a google image searches.
Really looking forward to getting my Macbook next week, but also slightly nervy just due to being so used to Windows for near on 15 odd years...... and advice on here about checking certain parts of their Mac to delete files, which mean nothing to me, but your way of deleting these files does sound a **** of a lot easier than ridding them on Windows. Go here and delete MacDefender... Nothing is ever that easy in the windows where you have to go to registry..and you need a science degree to work it out!

It must be like a red rag to a bull, Apple proudly announcing there are no Apple viruses. Surely someone somewhere sees that as a challenge, knowing the way these people's minds work.

There are no viruses that infect or affect OS X, not one.
There has and will always be malware, which can be avoided by using one of the best things we all have to protect us from it - what lies between our ears. Go to some website with a Mac and you are provided a prompt that your Mac has a virus or a trojan and you install a program that claims to get rid of it for you, which requires entering your Mac's admin password. Nothing can prevent stupidity in this regard. If you are prompted that your Mac has a virus or a trojan when visiting a website, ignore it. If you are prompted out of the blue to enter your Mac's admin password to install anything on your Mac when not intentionally installing anything, don't enter the password until you are sure what you are installing.
Don't use P2P programs to install anything from unknown and untrusted sources and the same from any website especially what is claimed to be pre-released Apple software or released Apple software for free, and the same for any 3rd party software. When something sounds too good to be true, it is.

How can I get a Title and a subtitle that are on the same page to come into the TOC in order?

The subtitle is appearing before the Title even though it doesn't flow that way on the page. I use Paragragh styles to create my TOC and otherwise have had no problems. Any suggestions?
