Separate 2 databases from one oracle home

Here's the situation:
"prod and test databases are sharing the same oracle home"
I want to create separate oracle home for these databases, any suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

Hi C,
Oracle Home means that it can have multiple Domains inside it and under each Domains you can have one Admin server and n-number of managed servers. For better understating her is the directory structure
Oracle Home
|
Domain-1= Admin Server , Manage Server-1, MS-2 ....... MS-n
Domain-2= Admin Server , Manage Server-1, MS-2 ....... MS-n
Domain-n = Admin Server , Manage Server-1, MS-2 ....... MS-n
Now you can deploy the your App-1 and App-2 under any Domain on different Managed servers or you can even deploy each application under different domains but to answerer your question
Ans-1 Yes, it possible to have multiple instance configured from one oracle home.
Ans-2 Yes, after you configured one instance, you can re-run again and add/remove components
Hope above information helped you

  • Create two databases in one oracle home

    Hi All,
    I am new in oracle, using oracle standard edition 10g and some questions I want to ask.
    Is it possible to create 2 different databases under same oracle home? For example, one database for online transaction named orcl_online, one database for reporting services named orcl_report.
    If it is ok, that means 2 instance exist for each database, then how to use sqlplus to connect to orcl_online only ?
    Thanks.

    Not 2, you can create more number of databases in an Oracle Server but of course depend on the h/w configurations.
    Use dbca to create the database orcl_online and then again create orcl_online.
    If u trying to connect to particular DB through Command line, set the ORACLE_SID.
    In windows set ORACLE_SID= orcl_online then use sqlplus
    In unix/linux etc export ORACLE_SID=’ orcl_online’ then use sqlplus
    If using sqlplus GUI specify the host string which is the database name probably.

  • Running multiple instances from same oracle home

    Hi Gurus,
    I am preparing for OCA 11g examination. I had a question about running multiple instances from same oracle home. While reading the book I came across a statement about database control which says "If there are several database instances running off the same Oracle home, then each will have its own Database Control instance".
    Now I assume that this statement implies multiple instances accessing the same physical database (which as per my knowledge can happen only in case of a RAC).
    I am not able to understand how exactly can you have multiple database instances in a single oracle home. I have installed Oracle 11g on my computer whose oracle home is +"D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1"+; now this directory houses all the binaries (executables and folders like admin,bin, etc) for the oracle instance that I have installed (the instance name is ocp1). Now if I am to install or create another Oracle Instance (say ocp2) in the same home, wont there be a conflict of binaries of the two instances in the same home ?
    Basically,it makes sense if db_1 folder is further split into multiple folders, one for each instance (for example, one for ocp1 & one for ocp2); each of these folders will then contain the binary files, libraries,etc for its own instance; but, this is not the case, here db_1 houses all the binaries directly under it ...
    The other question which stems from the statement I mentioned above is that if having multiple instances running from same oracle home accessing the same physical database, can this arrangement be called RAC at all; or does RAC dictate that you cannot have multiple instances that are accessing the same database have to be installed on physically separate machines and so you cannot have two RAC instances (accessing same physical database) installed on the same computer ??
    I hope my questions are not too much confusing ... !!
    Cheers,
    Sudripta

    Hello,
    "If there are several database instances running off the same Oracle home, then each will have its own Database Control instance".This is true, and also means each instance will have its separate database (i.e. dbf files etc.) & separate DB Control. Usually in this case you create several instances on the same node.
    Now I assume that this statement implies multiple instances accessing the same physical database (which as per my knowledge can happen only in case of a RAC).You are correct about RAC where several instances (usually running on separate nodes) access the RAC.
    More info:
    1 Oracle Home - 1 Database - 1 SID is possible.
    1 Oracle Home - Many Databases - Many SID is possible.
    1 Oracle HOme - 1 Database - Multiple SID is possible and this is called RAC.

  • Data synchronization from one Oracle DB to multiple Timesten DB

    Hi all,
    I need to synchronize data from one Oracle DB to multiple Timesten DBs, for example <n> TT DBs, with following requirements:
    1) Data in <n> Timesten DB must be synchronized, it means data of Oracle DB must appear in all <n> Timesten DBs, or not in any Timesten DB
    2) Flexibly increase and decrease the value of <n>
    Please give me good way or tool to do this!
    Thanks,
    LeoBon

    Hi,
    I am assuming here that all updates to this data will occur in Oracle and the data in Timesten is query only? If so then there are several approaches but the 'best' one is probably as follows:
    1. Create a pair of Timesten datastores (on two separate machines0 which are synchronised uwing TimesTen active/standby pair replication.
    2. Create one or more READONLY cache groups in this A/S pair as required.
    Applications can connect to either database to query the cached data. The AUTOREFRESH mechanism will refresh changes from oracle into the 'active' TimesTen database and replication will propagate them to the 'standby' database.
    To 'scale out' you can add one or more readonly subscriber databases to the A/S pair (up to a maximum of 128!). The cached data will be present in these also and kept in sync by TimesTen replication.

  • How to copy/move Portal database from one machine to another?

    I am receiving a ORA-22973 error (size of object identifier exceeds maxmum size allowed) on the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table when attempting to import my entire "portal30" schema from one database to another on different Windows NT Servers.
    Background: I had Portal 3.0.9.8 installed, configured, and running with the following setup:
    Machine 1: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 9iAS 1.0.2.2, Oracle Portal 3.0.9.8
    Machine 2: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 8i Database 8.1.7.0.0
    We no longer have use of Machine 2 and needed to move the database over to Machine 1.
    I performed the following steps:
    1. Installed Oracle 8i database 8.1.7.0.0 on Machine 1.
    2. Set up the tablespaces in the database on Machine 1 to match the same names and sizes of the tablespaces in the database on Machine 2.
    3. Used the Oracle "exp" command to export the entire database that resided on Machine 2.
    4. Copied the ".dmp" file to Machine 1.
    5. Used the Oracle "imp" command to import the entire database on Machine 1.
    6. The import completed successfully with warnings. But I had received the ORA-22973 error during the import process.
    7. After it completed I compared the list of tables and packages in the "portal30" schema between the two databases. The wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table is missing.
    8. I tried to export and import only the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table between the two databases, but continue to receive the ORA-22973 error.
    Without the table being created, access to the portal cannot be achieved.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to create the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table without receiving the noted error?
    2. Is there any other workable way to get the portal database from Machine 2 to Machine 1?
    I am aware of the portal import/export utilities but that would require me to run through the 2 hour install of Portal 3.0.9.8 on the database on Machine 1 and then individually export and import all the portal components (security, pages, applications, content library, etc). I merely wanted to transfer the entire database from one machine to another, so I felt the Oracle exp/imp utilities would be quicker and less work.

    Hi,
    I've been hitting problems with Portal 3.0.9.8.1 against 8.1.7.2.1 on NT - i.e., Intermedia not working at all, and have been advised by support to move back to 8.1.7.1.1.
    I don't want to lose any of my content in the Portal since the db upgrade and am wondering on what is the best way to do this.
    The version of the Portal will be the same so I am hoping I can just use the Portal export and import utilities, as afterall, it is just data and the schema structures are the same between db versions. I'm also hoping that the Portal export doesn't use the standard Oracle EXP tool as it doesn't work anymore on 8.1.7.2.1 on NT!!

  • How Can I Copy an database from one server to another ?

    Hi All,
    I need to copy an existing database from one server to another server. I want to maintain all the settings from the source database.
    I´m not used to Oracle database and i´d be glad for any help.
    How can I do this ? Do I need to backup and restore in the other server ? Do I need to copy files from one server to another ?
    Any help will be really appreciated.
    Carlos.

    I think a simpler approach, other than using RMAN, is to do a database export from the source and then import them into the target database. But you will need to do some ground work on the target, i.e, create database, tablespaces, and schemas (with their name the same as those in the source database.)

  • Move Database From one location to another in same Server

    Hi,
    I am using 11 g R2 in OEL 5.
    I have installed my database inside oracle base /TEST_DB. Here i have oracle home and datafiles directories etc as usual.
    But i need to move this to /UAT/TEST_DB and run the oracle home and database form there.
    Is this cloning procedure is enough :- *Cloning An Existing Oracle11g Release 2 (11.2.0.x) RDBMS Installation Using OUI [ID 1221705.1]*
    or this is only for Oracle_Home??? If so please tell me how to move both the database and the oracle home.

    Hi,
    I did this just a week ago, or so. You don't need to clone the instance.
    There's a pretty good description on how to do this here:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/RenamingOrMovingOracleFiles.php
    However, after doing the steps outlined here, you're still having the same ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_BASE. Do the following:
    SQL> alter system create pfile from spfile;and manually change the relevant parameters in the newly created pfile to reflect the changes you're about to do (dump_dest etc..)
    Shut down the instance, move all files in your ORACLE_HOME to the new location, and change all relevant environment variables.
    connect to your idle instance in the new ORACLE_HOME, and do
    SQL> startup pfile=/path/to/your/pfileand after the instance has started correctly, do
    SQL> create spfile from pfile;All done!

  • Import some data from one oracle to another...

    Hi Guys,
    we have 2 oracle database servers on 2 different machines with schema.
    I want to import some data from a specific table from one oracle into another oracle.
    what is the way to do that.
    Please help in details
    Imran Baig

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
    Tables are already created in both of the oralce databases only the data varies. I just have to import only few records from one oracle to another with the same user name and table already existing.
    I have tried using database link. I can view records from the other oracle database but as soon as i write an insert command oracle gets held. I cant do anything.
    Is there any other way?

  • Error while duplicate database from one server to another server

    Hi there,
    I am practicing duplicate database from one single database server to another server. Hardware and driver path on 2 machines is the same. Here are my steps:
    --------------------- Clone site:
    1. modify listener.ora with content:
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
    ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /u01/app/oracle
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = orcl)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1)
    (SID_NAME= orcl)
    ENABLE_GLOBAL_DYNAMIC_ENDPOINT_LISTENER = ON
    2. stop and start listener again, message show like :
    Service “orcl” has 1 instance(s).
    Instance “orcl”, status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service…
    The command completed successfully
    3. create pfile from spfile.
    4. shutdown and startup nomount with pfile is new pfile create from step 3.
    --------------------------------------- Source site
    1. modify tnsnames.ora with content like:
    VVCOREDB =
    (DESCRIPTION =

    (CONNECT_DATA =
         (SERVER = DEDICATED)
         (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    2. run command from rman like these:
    rman> connect target sys@vvcoredb
    rman> target database Password:

  • How can we clone the Oracle database in new Oracle Home

    Hi,
    I would like to clone oracle database into new oracle home. How can we set it using OEM.
    I am using 10g grid control. Target db is on solaris
    Thanks
    Naveen

    after logging into target database, under maintenance tab, data movement header; ther is "clone database" option. When you click on it; you'll see :
    Clone Database uses RMAN to duplicate a database from:
    -- An open database in ARCHIVELOG mode, or
    -- An open database in NOARCHIVELOG mode (restart required), or
    -- A saved working directory from previous cloning
    Clone Database performs the following operations:
    -- Backup each database file and store it in a working directory
    -- Transfer each backup file from source to destination host
    -- Restore each backup file to existing destination Oracle Home
    -- Recover the cloned database with saved archived log files
    -- Open the cloned database with resetlogs
    It seems to be for cloning to a different host, but i guess you can chose the same host for source and destination. (I've never used cloning on em by the way :))
    But firstly, you should create a new oracle home, you can simply copy your oracle home with a new name (cp -R /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0 /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0.new) or make a new installation.
    I suggest you to do this cloning with CLI. You should take a full backup with RMAN, copy the oracle home, create a new initNEWSID.ora file and nomount the database, restore (or simply copy) controlfiles, restore database (with set newname commands), recover database, open resetlogs.

  • Import/export from one oracle db to anothe roracle db

    Hi All,
    I would like to import and export data from one oracle database to another oracle database. Can any one please suggest me/provide me any script if available.
    I am following Datapump IMPDP and EXPDP. I would like to do this data pump process every time. So I wolud like to do this task as automate. So please provide me any script for automating this job
    or let me know if there is any easy method to do this process.. I would like to have a script and am uising Oracle 11.2.0.3.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Below Anonymous block Exports the 'HR' schema:
    DMPDIR -- Directory object where you want to create the dmp files
    DECLARE
      l_dp_handle      NUMBER;
      l_last_job_state VARCHAR2(30) := 'UNDEFINED';
      l_job_state      VARCHAR2(30) := 'UNDEFINED';
      l_sts KU$_STATUS;
    BEGIN
      l_dp_handle                          := DBMS_DATAPUMP.open( operation => 'EXPORT', job_mode => 'SCHEMA', remote_link => NULL, job_name => 'SCHEMA_EXPORT', version => 'LATEST');
      DBMS_DATAPUMP.add_file( handle        => l_dp_handle, filename => 'SCHEMA_EXPORT.dmp', directory => 'DMPDIR');
      DBMS_DATAPUMP.add_file( handle        => l_dp_handle, filename => 'SCHEMA_EXPORT.log', directory => 'DMPDIR', filetype => DBMS_DATAPUMP.KU$_FILE_TYPE_LOG_FILE);
      DBMS_DATAPUMP.metadata_filter( handle => l_dp_handle, name => 'SCHEMA_EXPR', value => '= ''HR''');
      DBMS_DATAPUMP.start_job(l_dp_handle);
      DBMS_DATAPUMP.detach(l_dp_handle);
    END;
    Now you can use this dmp file to import the 'HR' schema in the required database.
    Below Anonymous block imports the 'HR' schema:
    DECLARE
    dph NUMBER;
    BEGIN
      dph := dbms_datapump.open(operation => 'IMPORT', job_mode =>

    NEW SERVER: -
    OS: REDHAT LINUX 5

    Its also RAC DATABASES
    So please tell me the best method to migrate 8 databases from old server to another server . all databases size are not more than 50 GB.
    All servers details are above .please let me know if you require any other details
    please reply soon we have to do it on urgent basis

    Since all your databases are small (< 50G), I would recommend using expdp/impdp - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e17222/expimp.htm - as this will provide several advantages as listed in the document.

  • How to move SQL database from one location to another location i.e. from C' drive to D' drive

    Hi, How to move SQL database from one location to another location i.e. from C' drive to D' drive ? please share some link.
    Thanks and Regards, Rangnath Mali

    Hi Rangnath,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to move databased from C drive to D drive.
    You can detach Database so that the files become independent, cut and paste the files from source to destination and attach again.

    Is it possible to have multiple SQL NET listeners for one oracle home? I do not want have 2 oracle homes in order to accomplish this. Thanks in advance.

    This will allow me to have different security settings for each sqlnet listener? I would like one to require encryption for one specific IP address, and the other not to worry about it.
