ServiceLayer stops applications from running prope...

Hi,
I'm using Nokia PC Sync (Nokia PC Suite 6.85.14.1) to synchronize data between Outlook (Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 SP3, Windows XP SP2) and my Nokia N73 via bluetooth (Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba, Version v4.31.02.6(D)). After all this works for me quite well, sync works just fine in both directions.
Unfortunately some applications (MS Office, Google Desktop Search etc.) on my windows xp notebook behave quite strange since I installed the Nokia PC Suite: the applications do take a lot more time to startup (for example MS Excel do take about a minute to startup, normally it takes a few seconds).
I figured out that a program called 'PC Connectivity Solution' (which is bundled with Nokia PC Suite) is the reason for (the running process is called ServiceLayer.exe) - whenever I kill this process the other apps do work properly (startup in a few seconds). But the ServiceLayer process is needed by Nokia PC Sync.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and best regards
- Stephan

in the absence of any other solutions, i decided to go the DIY approach.
I noticed that servicelayer.exe is run as a service, which means you cant "kill" it as you would kill a normal process, using the task manager. you can only stop it in the "Services" window of the control panel.
I researched a way to start and stop services programmatically.
Apparently you can stop any service using the following DOS command:
net stop "servicename"
and you can start any service with
net start "servicename"
so then it was pretty straightforward i created two .bat files one to stop the service and 1 to start it.
in theory everything should be fine now, but ive noticed once i stop the servicelayer.exe service, whenever i right click on any file on my computer, i get an error message in a "nokia phone browser" dialog box, with a red "X", pop up saying "The operation could not be completed". how annoying.
i did notice one benefit of stopping and restarting the service though, the memory usage went right down to 4 megabytes after i did that. servicelayer.exe has definitely got a memory leak.
in case its relevant im using nokia pc suite v 6.85.14.1
on windows 2000 service pack 4

  • Please make a permanent solution to stop applications from running in the background

'multitasking' is not a very usefull invention and should have a permanent solution, to stop applications from running in the background instead of having to go in and exit them. the only thing that is usefull is to go in and click on next song under music, everything else running in the background can just be exited as far as im concerned, its not like i have 400 applications, and i have to go searching through my phone to find them

Push twice on the Home button to display running apps. Press on one and hold until they wiggle. Tap on the circled red "x" to remove each from the background. Note that backgrounded apps are not actually running until you access them except for those that have been written to run concurrently such as Music, which can continue playing while you are using other apps.

  • Java: Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running

I keep getting the error "Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running" when trying to access the Web Interface of an HP printer....I don't know the model of the printer since I cant get into it, but it does say HP. I am trying to access it using IE 11, but also tried it in chrome and it is saying "The Plugin is not supported".
I have updated Java, went into the Java control panel > Security tab > Added the printers IP address to the exception list. I still get this error. Can't turn the Java security lower than High anymore....there just isn't an option for it. I have had this happen on multiple printers before, and Google hasn't helped so far, figured I would ask you all while I continue my search.
    Anyone else run into this?

I'm not sure anyone here knows more about the Java plugin than you do...
Were you starting the control panel from disk as administrator because it didn't work starting it through the Start menu (if you have Control Panel set to View by Category, the Java control panel is under "Programs").

The app (Excel) is in the dock. When I left click on it there is no check next to open at login.
Lets go back to the beginning when I installed ms office both word and excel were in the dock. then one day excel dissapeared. I put it back in the dock and that is when it started opening during login. There is only one X showing in the dock.

Most of those apps aren't running in the background, but what you are asking is how to close the apps.
To close an app in iOS 7, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

  • Can't stop applications from opening automatically at login

A few months ago I tried the "open at login" feature for 4 of the applications in my dock. I have decided it is more of a hassle than it's worth and unchecked "open at login." That didn't stop them from opening automatically. I went into Accounts and made sure the "Login Items" tab was empty. That also didn't work. I even added the programs into the tab, restarted and deleted them. I searched the Apple website and read that you can bypass applications launching automatically by holding shift at the blue screen on startup and then again after typing the password. I set the computer to not login automatically and hold shift every time I start the computer up. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did about it. Is there a way to stop them from opening without having to log in every time? Thank you.

go to the directory homedirectory/library/preferences and delete the files loginwindow.plist and com.apple.loginitems.plist. Then log out/in normally. nothing should start up by itself.

Mac OS X 10.5, Ink: Handwriting recognition cannot be enabled
    Last Modified: July 28, 2011
    Article: TA25180
    Old Article: 307372
This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.
    Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS Components
    Issue or symptom
You might not be able to enable Handwriting recognition in Ink preferences (in System Preferences). This may occur on some Macs that shipped with Leopard pre-installed.
    Solution
Use this workaround to enable handwriting recognition:
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
    Open Terminal.
Carefully type (or paste) the following command, then press Return.
    sudo rm /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache*
Enter your admin password if prompted for it.
Type or paste the following command in Terminal, then press Return.
    sudo rm /var/folders/*/*/-Caches-/com.apple.IntlDataCache*
Type or paste the following command in Terminal, then press Return.
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ink*
    Restart the computer.
It didn't work and has crippled my OCR software into the bargin. Any solutions?

Restore the bootable backup/clone of your previous installation or your Time Machine backup. BTW, the rm command action is otherwise irreversible.

  • How do I stop QuickTime from running my photos too?

I downloaded QuickTime to play video, but it's running my Photos files too, and I can't find any Options Menu to stop it doing that!
    Please help.
    [email protected]

Yes, I know how to remove it.
What I'm saying is that it RE-loads itself constantly. This is not a bug or an error. In other words the program is designed so that it does this whether you want it to or not. I get a Microsoft Spyware Alert that informs me that Quicktime has once again hijacked my computer and has placed itself in my active programs, has modified my registry, has added itself to my system tray, and has added itself to my list of startup programs. None of these things are needed or desired. This is assinine, since I rarely use the program and don't need it eating up computer resources so it can sit in my system doing nothing. Once this "feature" has have to go in and remove it from all these places.
So short of simply getting one of the many Quicktime alternatives is there a way to keep this program from invading my system?
    Thanks for any assistance offered.

  • How do I stop mdworker from running when on battery?

Was out today and my battery was going down really fast. Found out that mdworker (Spotlight's indexing program) was running using "100%" of CPU. I don't particularly understand why OS X Lion thought it a good time to run that proscess… Would be great if it did not run it when on battery.

I really cannot agree with you.
Spotlight and any other disk-intensive service should NEVER run while on battery.
I've been sitting here the last 20 minutes watch my fairly new macbook pro battery drain from 47% to 18% because spotlight was indexing.
Also, so what if it's out of date when I plug back in, I'd much rather have spotlight re-index when I plug in than drain my battery when I'm not near a power source.
I for one would like to see this stop, or at least be an option I could control in Energy Saver pane...
