Servlet with Issues writing to MySQL Database using JNDI

I'm hung on one servlet for my site. It compiles fine, and is accessed fine by the JSP, but doesn't do as I intended: write my blog entries to the MySQL database!
As mentioned in the title, I'm using JNDI for connection pooling, via META-INF/context.xml.
I'm also using JDBC Realm with a form, and that's working just fine, so I'm sure my issue isn't context.xml, as it seems to be overriding Tomcat's context file just fine, at least for authentication.
Below is the code from the servlet, to include the annotations:
package projectEgress.web.blog;
import java.io.*;
import java.text.*;
import java.sql.*;
import javax.naming.Context;
import javax.naming.InitialContext;
import javax.naming.NamingException;
import javax.sql.*;
public final class blogInput {
     /* bean properties */
    private String blogHeader;
    private String blogSubheader;
    private String blogBody;
    private String externalLinks;
    Connection conn;
    Statement stmt;
        /* getters & setters */
        public String getBlogHeader() {
            return blogHeader;
        public void setBlogHeader(String blogHeader) {
            this.blogHeader = blogHeader;
        public String getBlogSubheader() {
            return blogSubheader;
        public void setBlogSubheader(String blogSubheader) {
            this.blogSubheader = blogSubheader;
        public String getBlogBody() {
            return blogBody;
        public void setBlogBody(String blogBody) {
            this.blogBody = blogBody;
        public String getExternalLinks() {
            return externalLinks;
        public void setExternalLinks(String externalLinks) {
            this.externalLinks = externalLinks;
        /* like it says, a void which writes to the database */
        public void writeToDatabase() {
            /* create the query string to fill the table */
            String query = "insert into blogEntry (blogHeader, blogSubheader, blogBody, externalLinks) values (\"" + this.blogHeader + "\", \"" + this.blogSubheader + "\", \"" + this.blogBody + "\", \""  + this.externalLinks + "\")";
            try {
                /*establish the datasource and make the connection */
                Context ctxt =  new InitialContext();
                DataSource dsrc = (DataSource)ctxt.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/projectEgress");
                conn = dsrc.getConnection();
                stmt = conn.createStatement();
                /* Add data to table 'blogEntry' in our database */
                int input = stmt.executeUpdate(query);
                /* close the connections */
                stmt.close();
                conn.close();
                /* check for exceptions, ensure connections are closed */
                } catch (SQLException sqlx) {
                    sqlx.printStackTrace();
                } catch (Exception ex) {
                    ex.printStackTrace();
                } finally {
                    if (stmt != null) {
                        try {
                            stmt.close();
                    } catch (SQLException sqlx) {}
                    if (conn != null) {
                        try {
                            conn.close();
                    } catch (SQLException sqlx) {}
        Here are the settings I have in META-INF/context.xml (sans Realm stuff, which works):
<Context debug="1" reloadable="true">
    <Resource name="jdbc/projectEgress"
        auth="Container"
        type="javax.sql.DataSource"
        username="********"
        password="********"
        driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
        url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/projectEgress?autoReconnect=true"
        validationQuery="select 1"
        maxActive="15"
        maxIdle="8"
        removeAbandoned="true"
        removeAbandonedTimeout="120" />
    <WatchedResource>WEB-INF/web.xml</WatchedResource>
    <WatchedResource>META-INF/context.xml</WatchedResource>
</Context>And, finally, the code I'm using in the JSP which calls the method (the form action is directed to this file's URL):
    <jsp:useBean id="blogInput" class="projectEgress.web.blog.blogInput">
    <jsp:setProperty name="blogInput" property="*" />
        <jsp:scriptlet>blogInput.writeToDatabase();</jsp:scriptlet>
    </jsp:useBean>
    -YES, I know I'm using a scriptlet in a JSP... I really don't want to create a custom tag to call the method, at least not until I'm far along enough in the project to justify creating a library... let's make it all work, first! :o)
FINALLY, the form:
<form action="/projectEgress/area51/blogInput" method="post" id="adminForm" enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded">
     <div>
        <span class="inputheader">Blog Header</span><br />
      <input type="text" name="blogHeader" size="35" class="form" /><br />
        <span class="inputheader">Blog SubHeader</span><br />
      <input type="text" name="blogSubheader" size="45" class="form" /><br />
        <span class="inputheader">Blog Body</span><br />
      <textarea class="content" name="blogBody" rows="9" cols="60"></textarea><br />
        <span class="inputheader">External Links</span><br />
      <input type="text" name="externalLinks" size="45" class="form" /><br />
      <input type="submit" value="Post!" class="submit" />
     </div>
    </form>As far as I can tell, it should work, and it doesn't throw any errors (in fact it shows the success message rather than the configured error page), but when I check the blogEntry table from the MySQL prompt, it responds with "Empty set".
I've double checked to ensure that the table columns are present in MySQL and all the naming conventions line up and they do, so I figure it's my servlet that's broken.
Advice? Ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Okay, I changed a few things in the servlet code.
For one, I'm trying a PreparedStatement in place of Statement. Don't ask me what made me think it would work any better, it just stores the sql query in cache, but I thought I'd just try something else.
One thing this is allowing me to do is make the connection and statement (now PreparedStatement pStmt) objects local variables. It wouldn't allow me to do so before without giving me compile errors.

}Someone out there has to have a thought on this.
Even if it's just something they think probably won't work, so long as it gives me another angle to see this from.

  • Error connecting to MySQL database using JNDI

    Hi,
    I'm trying to do a simple connection to a MySQL database using the JNDI look-up
    method.
    Have tried this with the PointBase database that came with WebLogic and got it
    to work successfully.
    However got the attached error message when I tried it on MySQL database. I tried
    this with both the WebLogic's driver for MySQL and also the one I downloaded from
    MySQL (com.mysql.jdbc.Driver), and both failed with the same error message.
    Offhand, it doesn't look like the connection pool is failing. Tested it with WebLogic's
    "Test Pool" function and it was alright.
    Also MySQL database is working properly. Test this by doing simple connection
    and retrieval with simple JDBC connections and it works.
    Any ideas what else I can check with regards to this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi .
    Develop a sceanrio between SAP to Database system,When the data updates in SAP Tables read the data and update it in DATA Base using JDBC adapter,but there will be some delay in updating data in MySQL.
    serach in sdn for IDOC-TOJDBC sceannario,many documents available for the same.

  • Populate Livecycle PDF from mySQL database using PHP

    I'm trying to set up a database of loan agreements, where users will submit a form through Acrobat and their information will be stored in a mySQL database. Later, they can go back and download the PDF, which will be repopulated with their data in the mySQL db.
    I made the form in Livecycle Designer and submit the information through HTTP POST. I can easily get the information from the form into the database...my only problem is getting that information back out into the PDF.
    What would allow me to write back to the PDF, preferably using PHP? What kind of syntax would that require?
    Thanks!

    I have a vital form that clients fill out, which is passed to many people in the company along the workflow. The form is a Planner and we have in the following PDF, Word Doc..
    Well before, the Planner.pdf was originally created in Word, since most people have access to Word.. but evolved to a PDF form created from the Word Doc via Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.0 w/ User Rights enabled so that the form could be filled out and saved using Adobe Reader.. which was a step better than Word.. being that it is free. But this needed to be easier and more to the point b/c some clients don't particularly like installing the latest version of Reader, even if you provide them the link. Nor do they like saving the form, filling the form, and attaching the form to send back.
    My goal is to have the client fill an HTML version of the form, submit and be done with it, but everyone in the workflow be able to easily receive the filled Planner as a PDF form.
    So some months ago I ran into this post Chris Trip, "Populate Livecycle PDF from mySQL database using PHP" #8, 22 Sep 2007 4:37 pm
    which uses the command line Win32 pdftk.exe to merge an FDF file into an existing PDF on the remote server, and serve this to whoever.
    My problem was with shared hosting and having the ability to use the Win32 pdftk.exe along with PHP which is predominantly used on Linux boxes. And we used a Linux box.
    so i created the following unorthodox method, which a client fills the HTML version of the Planner, all field values are INSERTED into a table in MySQL DB, I and all filled planners that have been filled by clients to date can be viewed from a repository page where an XML file is served up of the corresponding client, but someone would have to have Acrobat Professional, to import the form data from the XML file into a blank form.. altoughh this is simple for me.. I have the PHP file already created so that when a Planner is filled and client submits. >> the an email is sent to me with a table row from the repository of the client name, #, email, and a link to d-load the XML file,
    But I also have the PHP files created so that the Planner can be sent to by email to various people in the workflow with certain fileds ommitted they they do not need to see, but instead of the XML file beiong served up i need the filled PDF Planner to be served.
    I can do this locally with ease on a testing server, but I am currently trying to use another host that uses cross-platform compatibility so i can use PHP and the pdftk.exe to achieve this, as that is why I am having to serve up an XML file b/c we use a Linux server for our website, and cant execute the exe.
    Now that I am testing the other server (cross-platform host), just to use them to do the PDF handling (and it's only $5 per month) I am having problems with getting READ, WRITE, EXECUTE permissions..
    Si guess a good question to ask is can PHP do the same procedure as the pdftk.exe, and i can eleminate it.
    or how in the heck can i get this data from the DB into a blank PDF form, like i have described??

    I've solved the DW problem by changing the site folders from
    'db' to 'wwwroot' e.g. 'C:\CFusionMX\db\' is now
    'C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\
    However I'm now back to my original problem. I've lost my
    mqysql connection in CF Adminstrator. Before I made these changes I
    could connect to my mysql databases using the following settings:
    JDBC URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test
    Driver Name: MySQL Connector J
    using the following Java path and file:
    C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\WEB-INF\lib\mysql-connector-java-3.0.17-ga-bin.jar
    Now these settings give me the following error:
    "Connection verification failed for data source: javaserver
    []java.sql.SQLException: SQLException occurred in JDBCPool
    while attempting to connect, please check your username, password,
    URL, and other connectivity info.
    The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException
    occurred in JDBCPool while attempting to connect, please check your
    username, password, URL, and other connectivity info"
    Any suggestions on this would also be welcome.
    Thanks again to everyone for their help.

  • How to connect mysql database using xml

    welcome to all,
    here my doubt is how to connect mysql database using xml file, how to integrate xml file and jsp file and how to access data from dabase using jsp file. can any one help me

    Short answer: you wouldn't do any of those things. The first two are meaningless and the third is a bad practice. I have no idea what those ideas were supposed to achieve so I have no idea what tutorials I should suggest to you.

  • Any problem with a single MySQL database used on more than one site?

    I have a set of multiple sites hosted separately I'm working on. I'd like to set up a PHP/MySQL database on one site, and be able to pull data from it for completely separate sites. Seems like it shouldn't be a problem. Are there any problems with doing this I need to be aware of?

    I've set up databases on three different hosts, and in all cases I could access the databases from outside the domain of the site itslef.  GoDaddy is one of them, they used to restrict it, but now they give you the option when setting up a new database on your account.

  • Connecting to a Mysql database using a ColdFusion server

    can't create a mysql datasource in CF Administrator.
    If I use the following datasource settings in CF
    Administrator:
    JDBC URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test
    Drive Class: MySQL Connector J
    AND (note the emphasis) I set my local and remote folders in
    my DW site local folder, remote folder and testing server folders
    all to C:\CFusionMX\db\, I can connect to my mysql database in CF
    Administrator.
    However, with these DW site folder settings, DW doesn't
    recognize any databases (Access or Mysql) at all.
    When I change my DW site folder settings to 'wwwroot'
    (e.g.local folder C:\CFusionMX\db\' is changed to
    'C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot') DW now lists all my CF Administrator
    databases.
    The problem is CF Administrator can't connect to my Mysql
    data sources. It gives me the error:
    "Connection verification failed for data source: javaserver

    URL, and other connectivity info.
    The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException
    occurred in JDBCPool while attempting to connect, please check your
    username, password, URL, and other connectivity info"
    I've tried changing the 3306 port to 8500, but this doesn't
    help.
    My java path and connector file is:
    C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\WEB-INF\lib\mysql-connector-java-3.0.17-ga-bin.jar,
    Is this a ID/password problem? I've tried both 'root' and
    leaving the ID field in the CF Administrator add data source block,
    both to no avail. I don't have a password set in Mysql for 'root'
    either.

    If it were me I would use the MySQL JDBC driver and not ODBC. Then DSN versus not-DSN wouldn't be an issue.

  • Not able to connect to remote MySQL database using Connector/J

    I have an application that uses a connection pool for database access.
    It is initialized with this context.xml entry:
    The db server is running on port 3307.
         <Resource name="jdbc/DB" auth="Container"
                        type="javax.sql.DataSource" username="un" password="pw"
                        removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="60" logAbandoned="true"
                        driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
                        url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3307/myDB"
                        maxActive="8" maxIdle="4"/>Now after starting the context, I can see I have a connection to my database using the MySQL Administrator. So I know I am connecting.
    The problem is, when I try to query any table in the db, I get this message:
    java.sql.SQLException
    : Table myDB.TABLE_NAME' doesn't exist
    at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.checkErrorPacket(
    MysqlIO.java:2921) ...
    I know it does in fact exist because I am looking at it. And the code I am using works perfectly fine as long as it is running on a local db server.
    Any ideas?

    I know it does in fact exist because I am looking at
    it. And the code I am using works perfectly fine as
    long as it is running on a local db server.
    Any ideas?Yes two.
    I am bit unclear about the last thing you said... you are testing with two different servers or two different clients?
    Anyway here are the possibilities off the top of my head.
    1) Some sort of security issue. Surrounding who and from where users can connect to the database in question.
    2) Case sensitivity problem. On Windows MYSQl makes all it's table names lower case only. Then it onlu supports the correct case to access them.
    For example
    CREATE TABLE TestMe
    Can then only be accessed with
    SELECT * FROM testme
    Not TestMe.
    This appears to vary with version but i have seen this issue before.

  • Connecting to a Mysql database using CF Administrator and DW

    I can't create a mysql datasource in CF Administrator.
    If I use the following datasource settings in CF
    Administrator:
    JDBC URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test
    Drive Class: MySQL Connector J
    AND (note the emphasis) I set my local and remote folders in
    my DW site local folder, remote folder and testing server folders
    all to C:\CFusionMX\db\, I can connect to my mysql database in CF
    Administrator.
    However, with these DW site folder settings, DW doesn't
    recognize any databases (Access or Mysql) at all.
    When I change my DW site folder settings to 'wwwroot'
    (e.g.local folder C:\CFusionMX\db\' is changed to
    'C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot') DW now lists all my CF Administrator
    databases.
    The problem is CF Administrator can't connect to my Mysql
    data sources. It gives me the error:
    "Connection verification failed for data source: javaserver
    []java.sql.SQLException: SQLException occurred in JDBCPool
    while attempting to connect, please check your username, password,
    URL, and other connectivity info.
    The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException
    occurred in JDBCPool while attempting to connect, please check your
    username, password, URL, and other connectivity info"
    I've tried changing the 3306 port to 8500, but this doesn't
    help.
    My java path and connector file is:
    C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\WEB-INF\lib\mysql-connector-java-3.0.17-ga-bin.jar,
    Is this a ID/password problem? I've tried both 'root' and
    leaving the ID field in the CF Administrator add data source block,
    both to no avail. I don't have a password set in Mysql for 'root'
    either.
    Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I've been working
    on this for weeks and keep running into one problem after another.

  • Is there any way to connect a mobile site made with Muse to a MySQL database?

    I've began the beginning stages of building a mobile site with the trial version of Muse and am really enjoying the functionality and ease of use. I'm eager to purchase the full version but one question stands in the way at the moment.
    The plan with this mobile site is to have it offer many if not all of the same features and functionalities of the desktop version. In order to achieve this I need to be able to sync the site up with a MySQL database, is there any way to achieve this in Muse? If not is it possible to do this once the site has been exported as HTML or uploaded to an FTP host?
    Thanks all!

    It would take a significant amount of work as you would have to change the pages to PHP. You would also lose any more compatibility with Muse.
    An alternative would be to host with Adobe Business Catalyst and upgrade to the eCommerce hosting plan and do your database functions using Business Catalyst Web Apps. It is a bit of a learning curve but in my opinion the better option than hosting on third party hosting and trying to convert everything.
    Keep in mind that even if you change the pages to php to add mySQL connection this would all have to be done by hand or with Dreamweaver. Muse does not support Database connectivity or dynamic content. The only real practical workaround is to use Business Catalyst along with Muse.
