SetProperties on custom tag

Hi all,
When creating a new custom component, you also have to create a Tag class.
There it makes sense to implement setProperties if you have custom attributes you want to set on your component.
In JSF-RI, the setProperties method is called once, in MyFaces the same method is called every time you request the page. In the spec I couldn't find anything about when and how often the method should be called.
In myfaces you get in trouble when you have a component binding and for example the attribute styleClass set.
Imagine now that you change the styleClass in your action by calling the components setStyleClass method. That's fine. Now reload the page.
Because the setProperties method is called again, the styleClass is reset by what's in your jsp.
Of course such code would behave differently on each implementation.
Is this a lack in the spec or what do you guys think?

Didn't realise Custom Tags could have constructors, they probably shouldn't. Anyhoo, couldn't you make it a regular private method and call it from the doStartTag() or wherever.

Custom tag - setProperties() not called

Hi all,
I've created my first custom tag with it's own component class, Tag Class, Renderer and TLD. However, when the JSP first loads, the encode() method fails in trying to get the attribute values from the attribute Map - the Map is empty. Upon further debugging I can see that the Tag class is called and the setter methods are called for each attribute but the setProperties() method is never called before release(), so the attributes are never stored in the UIComponent's attribute Map.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

First, this is what the jsp spec has to say in sec 1.14.1
When using scriptlet expressions, the expression must
appear by itself (multiple expressions, and mixing of expressions and string
constants are not permitted). Multiple operations must be performed within the
expression.Simple, isnt it ? All you have to is evaluate the expression as a whole.

There exist the JSTL SQL taglib, but I don't recommend this. It should only be used for quick development and testing. For database connectivity, rather create a data layer with DAO classes which you on its turn just plug in your business layer (with servlets).

Custom Tag -- Custom Component problems with iframes

I have a "project" component that originally iterated over a list of models and created/renderered the corresponding (and fairly complex) interactive UI components for those models. On the client-side, the output from these were then organized neatly into "tabs" via CSS ... all on one page. Since these UI Components are so hefty, when any iteraction was done on one of them, the whole page had to re-render and things got just plain slow. To get around this limitation, I decided to have my "project" component no longer create the UI components himself, but instead generate an IFRAME that points to a page that will generate a single component. This way, any iteraction will just cause that single IFRAME to refresh.
Due to the fact that an IFRAME can only be populated by using the src attribute, I have created a page that contains a JSF View (<faces:view>) and inside is a single custom tag of mine (<mine:displayView>). Let's call this page singleDisplayView.jsf. I create iframes that point to singleDisplayView.jsf with different request params for each (singleDisplayView.jsf?modelName=Foo, singleDisplayView.jsf?modelName=Bar, etc.)
The displayView tag has one attribute called requestQueryString and I use the tag like so:
<t:displayView requestQueryString="<%=request.getQueryString()%>" />The displayView tag's class is DisplayViewTag. In DisplayViewTag::setProperties(UIComponent uiComponent) method, I get the model name out of the request map and set this property on the UIComponent.
The problem is that I'm noticing that as the main page (that contains these frames) loads, setProperties() is only being called twice. After that, the components created by subsequent iframes just seem to be using the modelName from the second frame.
Is there a syncronization issue I don't understand?
Any ideas?

On a possibly related note, I read this in an article of the JSF application lifecycle:
In the first phase of the JSF lifecycle -- restore view -- a request comes
through the FacesServlet controller. The controller examines the request and
extracts the view ID, which is determined by the name of the JSP page.Could it be that the lifecycle is trying to reuse components from a single view, since all these iframes are pointing to the same page?

Why it cannot find the setter method for the attribute in my custom tag?

So why this happens? please help:)

Then you also need to create a UI element that extends HtmlPanelGrid
that has a tModelKey member and getters/setters. That object will hold
the information so that you can use it in your bean.Whoops... ignore that! Sorry. Attributes are simply stored in the component map component.getAttributes().

Custom Tag Calling

Can someone describe the process that JSF Servers use to call a tag. I'm writing a custom tag (actually a library of them) and I need one to call another tag.
in other words:
instead of:
<my:tag1> <my:tag2>
i'm creating a class called my:tag3, that will call both my:tag1 and my:tag2.
That's the short of it, my:tag3 is actually going to do some nifty stuff on the back end, but thats not required for this question. So, how do I get my:tag3's encodeEnd(...) function to create my:tag1 and my:tag2 in the javacode?

Another way is to associate (in faces-config.xml) a JSF component (of type UITag3) with the tag <my:tag3>. This UITag3 will have 2 sub-components, of type UITag1 and UITag2 and these components are created (and added to the UITag3 component) in the setProperties() method in UITag3Tag.
For example:

Why doesn't my custom tag work?

First, my backend database is MS Access. Nothing I can do about that, unfortunately.
I have defined three custom tags (no body, no attributes) to display report information from my project tracking/metrics Access database:

This problem doexn't happen consistently. This occurs once in a while.
I tried to increase Login delay Seconds parameter in the Connection Pool to 15 sec. It didn't help me much.

I�m trying to reduce the time needed to code mi app presentation layer, it uses some custom tags with certain configuration, i would like to know if its possible to do something like this inside my custom tag doAfterBody().

Automatic Scoping: Struts tags check all contexts (namely page, request, session, application) and use the first instance found. Developers do not have to explicitly "retrieve" objects from a particular scope. They may, however, specify a context.
same as like struts tag I want to preapre 'select custom tag'.which will retrieve its previous selected value automatically and display.And one important thing is I dont want to set the selected value of custom tag in session expicitly.I mean the custom tag it self should take care to set the session vale and retrieve the sesion value and display like Struts tag . For struts select tag we wont set any selected value in session though it will retrieve the previous value and display when scope of form = session

Make new custom tag in A2

I'm trying to add a custom tag to an image in Aperture 2.0. I've looked all over the internet and find no examples what so ever of AS and Aperture 2.0.

If I recall, it was done because how tags were to be handled in 1.2 was very different from 1.1 and it was felt that developers shouldn't rely on implementation specific classes (unless they were SPI) for several other reasons (application portability being the big one here).
If it's felt that this was the wrong decision, please feel free to log an issue [1] against the RI (to date, no one has).
As to the 'borked' dependency URLs, please log an issue [1] if you find these. We have nightly builds going that work from a clean workspace and checking today's result, it seems ok.

Passing Javascript Enabled or Disabled value in a custom tag

In my JSP I am using a custom tag.
This custom tag is having one attribute called status(whose value will be jsenabled means true or jsdisabled means false) depending on the browser's javascript enabled or disabled
How can i find the value of javascript enabled or javascript disabled and set the value of the attribute status in my jsp.
This is the custom tag

Since the user can visit any page at any time, the jsenabled value is not maintained in session or request, so i can't take from session or request also.

In addition to what was written above, you must make sure that you tell your web application to run as a JSP 2.0 web application.
You do this by defining your web.xml a little differently. Like this at the top:
<web-app version="2.4" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee web-app_2_4.xsd">
That should be what you need to get it working correctly.

How to create a custom tag for a custom converter

In Jdeveloper 11g, I have a project where I have created a custom converter class that impements the javax.faces.convert.Converter class. I have registered the converter with an id in the faces-config.xml file of the project, and the converter works fine by using the <f:converter type="myconverter"> tag. However, the custom converter has a field which I would like to set from the tag itself. Hence, I would like to add an attribute to <f:converter> tag if possible or create a custom tag that has the attribute.
I have done some reserach and I found that a custom tag can be implemented: I need to create a class which extends from the ConverterTag class or javax.faces.webapp.ConverterElTag class, which I did, but I also need to create ".tld" (tag library) file which defines the tag itself.
The part about creating the ".tld" file and registring the new tag is what I'm not sure how to do.
Does someone know how to do this?

that's a good document, and it explains how to make a custom converter. I already created the custom converter, it converts a number to any currency pattern. I know java already has a currency converter, but it doesn't support Rupee currency format, and I need that format.
My converter works, but I would like to pass the pattern of the format through an attribute in a tag. Since f:converter doesn't seem to support that, I created a custom tag which uses my converter, and it enables me to pass a pattern to the converter.
All of that works, but I need to be able to pass the pattern as an EL expression, and it's not evaluating the expression before passing it to the converter. It just passes the whole expression as a string. I'm thinking It may be something I'm doing wrong.
