Settings for making 16:9 aspect ratio from 4:3 source material

Hello,
I am trying to make a 16:9 short video from 4:3 source material but there's something wrong with the settings. The video is just stretching out to fit a 16:9 size, it isn't chopping off the top and bottom of the 4:3 size.
Here is the settings I currently have on the sequence and footage. I have the sequence set to anamorphic, in the motion tab I have the scale at 133 and under distort I have the aspect ratio set to 33.33. I've done this before with these settings and it came out fine.
I know the quality is reduced in doing this but I'm just uploading a small version to the web so the quality is fine for what I'm doing.

Reset your Motion settings and try again. Maybe take the clip out of the sequence, then put it back in. Undo and redo motion settings, sequence settings, and clip anamorphic settings.

Question:
If you are doing a video that is small enough that you are not worried about size, what is the absolute best quality encoder settings? Would a Continous Bitrate result in a higher quality file generally? VBR is for trying to make a smaller file I assume.
I'm frustrated with even white letters on black titles that have some flicker. I just don't seem to get the smooth quality I desire.
Should I look at a different encoder?
If you output PP3 to an AVI and then import it into encore, isn't there a reduction of Q. due to the save to the AVI file?

If Your material is 30fps then keep to NTSC (29.97fps), if 25fps keep to PAL.
One can feed iDVD the other frame rate - BUT RESULTING DVD WILL BE BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to convert all material to the same and final frame rate

Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)

• Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file,using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?

Changed H264 for Bly Ray settings to PAL, but "pixel aspect ratio" remains NTSC

I changed H264 for Bly Ray settings to PAL, but I can't change the "pixel aspect ratio" which remains NTSC. It remains grey and I can't find the way to unlock this.
What I miss?

Convert aspect ratio (from 1440p to 1080p)

I'm using the trial of Premiere CC (considering making the jump from FCPX). The getting started guides on adobe's site are great but i'm having problems trying to find an answer for this question:
I shot some footage in 1440p (by mistake), i've edited it into a sequence that I want, colour graded it and put music to it. How do I crop it so that it becomes 1080p. I've used the crop effect but when I go to export it to h.264 it still exports it as 1440p but with black bars.
Can anyone help? I would be eternally grateful

1440 has a aspect ratio of 1.33. This should also be in your sequence settings.
1440 can be easily exported to 1080 with aspect ratio of 1.0.
You can also drop 1440 footage directly in a 1080 sequence, it will automatically fit the screen.

Aspect Ratio From Final Cut

I shot some footage and improted it to Final Cut, it looks fine, but when I export to compressor, it does not preserve the aspect ratio. I tried the geomotry settings, no dice. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing, actually.
If, as I suspect, you're working with anamorphic material (either 16:9 SD/DV, or an outright anamorphic codec, like HDV or DVCProHD), using the Export Using Compressor function will not correct for geometry in Compressor's Preview window. But it is a display issue, not a functional error (the information passed from FCP to Compressor is always correct, in my experience).
But what are you outputting to? And I mean what codec (DV?) or encoding type (MPEG-2 for DVD?).

Exporting at Sequences settings... Changes aspect ratio.

I'm preparing some 16:9 DV footage for a Multi-Clip edit. So I'm Exporting a few sequences to my HD to re-import as a clip, at that point they are in sync for Muli Clip.
When I Export and deselsect 'make self contained movie', it comes back into FCP at Full Screen. I really want to use this option to save a ton of HD space. If I export and check 'make self contained movie', it re-imports at the correct Wide Screen aspect ration. How can I not make a self contained movie and maintain aspect ratio? I've had this problem since I bought FCP and gone through all the updates.
When I Export a Movie, I'm simply going to Export>QuitimeMovie (use sequence settings).

I don't know where else to access that checkbox besides Sequence Settings, there it has been checked since the project started.
Well my Multi Clip training only goes as far as Lynda.com's coverage. My original clips that I capture were from two different cameras that didn't share the same time code or start time. Also, both camera started and stopped many times individually and lastly I had an external audio source to fly in. So to my thinking at the moment, I had to sort the video and audio clips into 1 sequence per camera so they all share the same start/stop time and duration. At this point since Multi-Clip doesn't edit Sequences, only clips, I export the sequences and re-import them as clips. If you feel like explaining an easier way, I'm all ears, thank you.

Ignore aspect ratio from Olympus master

I have a problem with Aperture in combination with the pictures from my camera. I got an Olympus PL-3 shooting raws in 4032 * 3024 (4:3).
Now some time ago it seems that I accidentaly switched the aspect ratio in the settings of the camera from 4:3 to 3:2.
A book about the camera says that the camera always saves the 4:3 data in the raw but sizes the JPG to 3:2. As I import the pictures into Aperture and switch through them Aperture always has to load the picture for about 7 seconds until the ratio is correct. But then still the cropped version is shown though Aperture should ignore the crop. Is there any possibility I can get the 4:3 format?
Because on my camera as I switch through the pictures on it I can see the WHOLE raw file and not the cropped version. I found no setting in aperture to do so.
May anyone help me?

Aperture is decoding and converting the RAW file (this is what takes the 7 seconds on your machine), but even then the Image you see is in 3:2 (not 4:3) and is cropped (not uncropped)? Is this in Browser, the Viewer, or both?
The camera manual is correct. The RAW file should be the full-size 4:3 dataset. You may find it useful to tell Aperture to ignore the JPG file that the camera provides along with the RAW file. Set this at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Import➞Post Import Processing". Unless you work under strict professional deadlines, I suggest keeping this set to "Standard Previews".

Also, make sure that you have no Adjustment Presets applied on import. And you should -- it seems -- make sure your camera is set back to 4:3.

Bad Aspect Ratio from Compressor with DVCPROHD clips.

I created a 30 minutes long sequence in FCP using DVCPRO HD 720p24. I exported the sequence as a QuickTime movie using current settings... the QuickTime export looks perfect and playback displays the proper aspect ratio. I then sent this file to Compressor 3 with standard presets for AppleTV and iPod Video (large and small).
They all turned out with an incorrect (elongated, not squished) aspect ratio. All three exports. The source file looks fine but it is the main suspect as all conversions yielded the same result. Any suggestion on what can be wrong with the exported file or with the compressor 3.0 settings? Before installing Compressor 3, I did exported the file using QuickTime Pro and it turned out with the correct aspect ratio. Clips properties show correct display dimensions.

I believe this is an (annoying) issue with QuickTime's Conform aperture property. For some reason, the Final Cut Studio apps do not write to this property. QuickTime Pro does, which is why those exports are the correct display ratio.
For DVCProHD material, opening your Compressor (or FCP or Motion) created movie in QT Pro and setting that property to Clean snaps the display of the movie in QT to 1248x702 (accounting for - and cropping - the overscan and blanking areas), while setting it to Production should give you the 1280x720 frame you desire.

Working with aspect ratio from fcp to dvd sp

I am trying to cut video for use in a dvdsp menu. I have converted video to m2v using compressor. Video looks fine when importing to dvdsp. I try to edit same file in fcp. Everything works except when I export. After I edit m2v in fcp I am unable to make a successful export to dvdsp. I am able to import and add it to menu but the video looses its aspect ratio and is stretched.

But there are more cows on the loose here.
For example, the QuickTime Player Pro ( with its MPEG-2 Playout Component) will always report a square- pixel size of a .m2v file. But this is just reflecting the window size that QT decided to scale the 720x480 (or 720x576) to, because the inability for a computer screen to display non-square pixels.
So it can say that an MPEG-2 file is 640x480 when it is in fact 720x480. Even worse it can tell you 720x404 or 720x540, while none of them are even technically possible to use in MPEG-2.
It is true also that BitVice (1.8x and 2.x) allows you to encode all MPEG-2 legal picture sizes up to and including 720x576, a.k.a MP@ML ( or just SD). However, only a very few of them are legal for DVD, for example, NTSC:

704x480
352x480
352x240
and PAL
720x576
704x576
352x576
352x288

Trying to get Anarmorphic footage in 16 X 9 Aspect ratio from PAL footage

Hi, I am currently doing some tests - having bought a new camera, the HVX-201 AE. I was trying to get a 16 X 9 Aspect Ratio on my finished test footage. I shot using DV Tape, using several options, the squeeze, letterbox and normal. I then captured using DV PAL Anamorphic..
On the timeline, it looks fine, with grey on top and below, with no black letterboxes, except for the section with letterbox format on. However, when I export to Quicktime, using the DV PAL 48hz Anamorphic codec, it keeps being saved as a quicktime file with 720 X 576 resolution. Is there any way for it to be 16 X 9? Do I have to use another codec or will it always be in a 5:4 aspect ratio no matter what I do?
Or is it that when a TV which can play in 16 X 9 detects it, then it shows up as a 16 X 9 picture?

That's what anamorphic means, it's a 16:9 image stored in a 4:3 frame. You maintain that throughout the post process and any dvd creation in order to utilise the maximum resolution available in sd. When you author the dvd it flags the footage as anamorphic, telling any dvd player you play it in to output it appropriately according to the way it's set up. If your dvd player is not set up properly for the monitor it's connected to it won't work correctly and you'll either see a vertically stretched image with no letterbox (4:3 monitor with dvd player set for a 16:9 monitor) or you'll see a vertically squashed image with narrow letterbox (16:9 monitor with dvd player set to 4:3. In this case you can get the correct aspect ratio if you set your tv to one of the 'zoom' settings; normally the next option after 4:3 as you cycle through the options, but you are then throwing away roughly 25% of the available resolution and the image will be a bit softer.)
In DVDSP you can set the simulator to mimic various set-ups in order to check how the disc will behave before you burn.
If you just want to create QTs then Nick Holmes advice is the way to go.

How do I change a pixel aspect ratio from HD 1920x1080 frame rate 25 to NTSC 640x480 frame rate 29.97

I upload files to a tv channel, but for them to air, they need to have a NTSC 640x480 pixel aspect ratio with a frame rate of 29.97. I currently have a .mov file HD 1920x180 frame rate 25. I deleted the original unedited files so all I have is the .mov file. I need to make my file NTSC 640x408 frame rate 29.97

If you aren't entirely happy with the image quality you get from this in FCP. consider buying Compressor ($49). Down-converting from HD to SD often introduces artifacts. Compressor has a resize filter that does a good job of minimizing those artifacts.

Stills: Pixel Aspect Ratio from File is Wrong

The photo montage I'm working on is D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121). I shoot the pix with my SONY Z5U and the raw stills are all 1440x810 72 dpi, square pixels. To conform them to my PPro project, I change their dimensions to 720x480 and I change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2). But when I import these stills into PPro they all appear squeezed and their aspect ratio comes up as D1/DV NTSC (09091), so I have to manually change it to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen. How can I get these stills to automatically be seen at Widescreen?

Well, the original pix are 1440x810. If I were to change just the height to 480 and Constrain Proportions, the new dimensions would be 853x480 (thereby maintaining the aspect ratio). And this IS square pixels. So changing the dimensions to 640x480 would just thin out the image.

Compressor stretching Aspect Ratio from 16:9 to 4:3

I have just recently gotten an Canon HG10 HD Camera. I have been using Roxio Toast 9 to convert the AVCHD files into HDV files. In Final Cut Pro the files look GREAT in a 16:9 ratio, but when I bring the movie into Compressor AND DVD Studio Pro, the aspect ratio is stretched Vertically to a 4:3 ratio. Please help me figure out how to keep the aspect ratio correct!

I tried that and I got the same result. I really need to figure this out.
