Shared database server

When architecting the EP 6.0 many months back I came across some documentation stating we should use a separate Database server for our portal environment. Now I am looking for this documentation again but I can not find it. Has anyone heard of such a requirement from SAP? Our management would like to put the EP database on a shared DB server. Does anyone have any experience with heterogeneous databases on the same database server?

Might be irrelevant to you, but neverthless a word of caution from my side.
We were planning to use shared SQL servers for our portal installation. The shared environment was used by many non-SAP applications too. We ran into problems when we found out that the server collation of the shared system was not the one required for EP6 installation i.e. CPI BIN 850 char.
If you are planning to use a shared SQL server and if the server collation is not the one mentioned in the installation guide, of which there is a fair chance if there are non-SAP applications running, then you will definitely run into problems.
Correct collation of the database you create in the shared system is necessary but not sufficient. The EP6 installation checks the collation of database server as well.

Can I run a query joining Table 1 and Table 2 such that I do not have to worry about where CLUSTER 1 is and where CLUSTER 2 is? I am nit talking about partiitioning where one table is spread across nodes in a CLUSTER but is still within the same database server.

Sharing virtualized database server between two Sharepoint farms (intranet and extranet)

We have a Sharepoint 2010 intranet farm and are currently getting ready to upgrade the Sharepoint 2007 extranet farm to 2010. Can these two farms share the same database server (same SQL Server 2008 instance)? SQL Server is running on a virtual
machine with 24GB of RAM. From my research it looks like theoretically they can but in practice do I need to consider other factors such as processing power and other burdens on the db server? The web server for intranet is on the company's internal
network. The web server for the extranet will be in the DMZ.
Content database sizes:
- intranet: 60GB
- extranet: 30GB
Total estimated number of users (total for both): around 500 users.

Why does the upgrade relates to both farms being supported on the same SQL Server instance ?
Do you mean you plan to take the 2007's content database and attach it to the 2010 Farm ? To use
stsadm -o addcontentdb command ? In the end of the process, you'll have a single 2010 Farm ?
If so, then, yes. As long as SQL Server 2008 must be 64bit with SP1, and disk latency cannot be sluggish.
But if the plan is to migrate all farm databases, and have all SharePoint databases coexisting on the same SQL instance, then you will have to work your way if both farms use the default database names SharePoint_Config, WSS_Content, WSS_Logging.

Accessing shared database throws exception from one of 2 web roles

NOTE: I've tried to go to the v4 provider but get the same error (except with v4 in place of v4). I would suspect something amiss with my application if I didn't have a working one using shared code...though I'm still not ruling out that I'm doing
something wrong, just waiting for input from here.

Essbase Product Existence Check Fails against the Shared Services Server

Hello Everyone,
I am a new to Essbase
When I am launching the EAS web console and trying to log in, its giving me an error saying "Could not connect to Administration Server".
I looked in ESSBASE log file its showing an error 1051429 : "Essbase Product Existence Check Fails against the Shared Services Server with Error []"
This error actually started when I copied an Essbase Application from one of my computers to another computer. All I simply did is copied the application folder into "app" folder. I am not sure if migration
is possible just by copying and pasting the application folders. I am not sure if doing this messed up security with shared services. Also under c:\hyperion\essbase folder I see another text file named "SharedServices_Security_Client".

The SQL server itself is not running or TCP/IP is disabled. That can be confirmed by runing netstat and see it is listed there.
Then run telnet chandan 1433 and see it can connect

I go to the DOS console and type:

I did this right after I restarted my computer.

Seems that I can never get the database started properly?! When I press the Startup/Shutdown button I get:
Current Status: open
This is the correct current database status, although it doesnot match the current status in the sitemap page
What does this mean? Do you think this may contain the clue to the answer to this problem?
When I restart the Database I get the same status: unavailable.
I need your help to resolve this problem. The alternative is to revert back to Oracle 9i DB Server. Thank you in advance.

Essbase Studio - Failed to Establish Connection With SQL Database Server

Hi all,
I am new to Hyperion and am having trouble deploying what seems a simple cube in Essbase Studio.
My environment is Windows 2003, EPM 11.1.1.2, SQL Server 2000.
I have the following two issues which may be related.
1. The EPM System Diagnostic tool says that Hyperion Foundation cannot connect to the SQL database.
Error:
Failed: Connection to database
Error: java.net.UnknownHostException: <server name: <server name>
Recommended Action:
Every other EPM application is able to connect to the database. I have tried re-configuring Foundation Services and checking the config files and nothing looks wrong. I would appreciate advice on how to fix this.
2 In Essbase Studio, I was able to connect to the database where the source data is, build the minischema and create dimensions and measures. But when I run the cube deployment wizard I get the error:
Message: Failed to deploy Essbase cube
Caused By: Failed to build Essbase cube dimension: (Time)
Caused By: Cannot incremental build. Essbase Error(1021001): Failed to Establish Connection With SQL Database Server. See log for more information

I have checked the DSN as well as the connections set up within Studio, and they are all able to connect to the database. I am using the admin user for the Essbase server and have created a different user for the databases where the data resides and the shared services database. I tried using the same user all the way through and this didn’t help.
Can you please advise what else I can check or change to resolve this issue.
Also, can you work in EAS with cubes that are created in Studio? I tried looking at it and I got an error that the rule file couldn’t be accessed because it was created in Studio.
After the above failures, I tried creating a cube in EIS, with mixed success. I have been able to load the members and data without errors. But when I try to view the data in the cube, I am seeing field names for the measures instead of the data itself.
...Definitely more questions than answers at this stage of my learning.

I don't know if you found an answer to you question after so many months but I was hoping I could be helpful.
The issue you are experience happens often when the dimension that you are getting an error on, in this case TIME, is built from a snowflake lineage and there is a bad foreign key reference. This dimension is most like high-up in your outline build process for Essbase Studio and this prevents the build from happening usually early on.
Check your logs also. They are in Hyperion > Products > logs > essbase > essbasestudio.
You can also make your logs more verbose by setting a configuration variable in the essbase studio server.properties file but that should only be used for debugging as it really saps performance.
And, yes, you can of course edit an Essbase Studio deployed cube in EAS. However, any changes you make to the cube in EAS are subject to being wiped-out upon the next Essbase Studio deployment of that Applicaion/Database combo.

DB size is going to be too huge, you need to check for data archival option along with proper compression option.
As per requirement, you need good server setup like; CPU: 4 cpu, 12 cores and RAM will be good to start with 256 GB.
When you say 5 db server, is that it means 5 physical server not db instances rt?
If that is the case then you can go for SQL Server 2014 to use that in memory options along with so many good support for temppdb, query optimization due to cardinality changes, SSD support etc.
Intances will be:
INS1, 2 : main instance and archival instance, using first two servers out of 5 servers.
INS3: DR server, if it will not be active all the time and then we can easily check for 1/4 load on DR server so you can configure AlwaysOn to check INS1 and DR instance to get all HA DR part too.
In case of INS4, INS5 can be used for reporting purpose being configured as other replication to act as local DR too.
Hopefully I have covered all the available objects you have.

Error when installing sapccmsr agent on standalone database server

Hi All,
I am setting up standalone ccms agent (sapccmsr) on a database server on a windows platform.
I am following SAP note: 371023 - OS07 ST06 - Monitoring operating system data and also refering to ADM107 documentation. I have created csmconf file from the application server and ran sapccmsr -R in the directory (S:\saploc\prfclog). I have also set DIR_PERF to S:\saploc\prfclog.
I get the following error message when I try to register the agent.

Hello. Saploc is not your "S:\saploc" directory is the shared directory are created in sap installation time, check your Shares --> "Computer management" --> Shared folders --> Shares
. Check your Saploc it's like drive:\usr\sap

Shared database for family pictures (on local network, not online)

Hi all,
We recently purchased our first Mac and I am now looking into how we can use a shared photo database. We have a Macbook, a Windows 7 PC/server and a Media Center Extender connected to the PC.
My plan is to use the individual files as the database, via rating (1-5 stars), tags (to create "albums") and time (photo capture date). This works for the PC (Windows Live Photo Gallery) and the Media Center Extender.
Do you know of a Mac software that can do below?
- Read pictures from a network share, cache info in a local DB to increase response time
- Write tags back to the image file on a network share
- Group photos based on rating, tags and capture date
- Lightweight and convenient interface
My planned budget is up to 100 USD.
I have tried a few with no luck:
- iPhoto (appears to only use it's own db)
- Deep (appears to only use it's own db)
- Photoshop Elements (writing back tags seem to require a manual click on each image)
- Picasa (has no grouping of tabs, and Picasa local albums are not easily viewable by other computers (and not writable at all). I did make a PowerShell script to make a new folder for each Picasa local album containing shortcuts to the pictures in it, this works good for the Media Center Extender but no on the Mac).
- BONUS: Offline sync of selected photos (e.g. 4+ stars or part of an album/tag)
- I have read quite a few similar threads regarding "iPhoto server" etc but I found no solution
If you have another success story, I would be happy to hear it. Other ideas:
- Other options if I replace my PC with a Mac and the Media Center Extender with a PS3?
- iPhoto server?
- Windows Home Server?
- Use a shared database (without corruption), e.g. using Picasa on both machines
- Online service (however I hesitate to use this due to privacy and due to 27 000 images / 45 GB)

Your $100 budget is going to be tough. But generally you want a piece of software that does not have its own 'data base' ... rather it will store the tag info with the picture on a file system somewhere. A couple pieces of software that I have used may fit your needs (with some cavests):
- Nikon ViewNX ... which came free with my Nikon will look into a file system for pictures and let you tag them with keywords and ratings etc. All of that is written back to the picture itself. Not sure if you can just download a free version from their site without a corresponding camera purchase
- Photoshop Lightroom (which I currently use) would has lots of capabilities to help you organize the pictures. The key words, tags etc are also written back to your picture (or a separate 'side car' file). The caveat it is $300 ... but for that you get a lot of high end photo editing features as well

Sharing DB server among several SAP instances

When discussing possible server consolidation scenarios the following question arose:
Is it possible and supported to use one database server for several SAP instances?
E.g. One instance of SQL Server holds four databases for "dev" + "test" + "sandbox1" + "sandbox2"
and four servers (three of them virtual servers in VMware ESX) access this shared DB server to access their databases.
The idea is to have one heavyweight DB server accessing SAN and running the DB load of several non productive SAP instances. One would have to pay only one SQLServer license...

The advantages of multiple instances/one database each are:
- Each instance can be stopped and started independently. This allows you to have downtime on one system without impacting another.
- Each instance can be patched separately. (This can also be viewed as a disadvantage from an admin overhead point of view)
- MS SQL memory parameters (min. server memory/max. server memory) are configued at the instance level therefore you can better configure these parameters to meet the specific requirements of the database e.g. R/3, BI, EP. The alternative is one memory setting for all DB types.

How to install and configure an UNIX Oracle shared database

we have a SUN Solaris UNIX,
we have no problem for installing and configurate a typical database.
So we want a "shared" database (multithread).
When we try (deployement of a java application with JDevelopper), we cannot access to our instance of the shared database.
The error message is :
"SQLException: The network adapter could not establish the connection".
The architecture of our project include CISCO firewalls.
I think the configuration of Multi thread Server is not Ok or there are
a bug with firewalls.
How can i check a good shared configuration ?
What is the good configuration ?
If Somebody can help me with response and eventually samples of good
initialisation files like init.ora, listener.ora, sqlnet.ora ...

You can try this methodology to test connectivity :
From the server itself :
sqlplus username/password@tns
where tns is the alias of your database containing :
SID , machine ( where your db reside ) and port.
If you cannot connect from here , then check your tnsname.ora if you got the right entry.
From a client : ( different machine )
where tns is the alias of your database containing :
SID , machine ( where your db reside ) and port.
If you cannot connect from here , then check your tnsname.ora if you got the right entry
use SQLPLUS first to test connectivity, and if you were
able to run this process then move on run your java codes.
If installing sqlplus from the client is a hassle, first write a
java code testing just the connectivity with sqlplus installed
on the first machine and make it work first. Then you can
use this code to other clients without installing sqlplus.

Migrating a physical database server to a virtual server

Database server on a virtual server sounds like a bad idea to me.
Databases are huge resource consumers, they require dedicated resources memory/cpu/IO/network.
In virtual settings all this is shared.
So, I predict that in virtual your performance and throughput will suffer greatly.
You can google pro's and con's of virtualized servers for more details.
However, as far as BO product is concerned - all we need is connectivity, if DB connect info doesn't change - we won't see no difference . (except above about performance)

The advantage is that a direct network transport exists between the local shared server and the remote dedicated server. A disadvantage is that extra back-end server processes are needed.
