Shared fonts on XSAN

Hi,
I work for a mid sized Media company. We have around 12 editors working simultaneously off different machines, in different offices using the one xsan.
The most common problem we encounter is different fonts installed on different machines. One editor will have a custom range of fonts on his machine while another does not, this causes problems when different editors open projects on different machines. Fonts go offline too often.
My question is, is there a way of having a "stock" of installed fonts on the xsan, and an application installed on each machine that automatically watches this folder and syncs any changes to the local machine?
Or, is there a better way of going about this font-syncing issue?
Thank you for your help,
-Alex

OS X supports the use of /Network/Library as a valid reference path for common Library items like fonts. This is generally not a SAN deployment solution, but an Open Directory/File Services implementation. It requires an OD Master (which you probably have because you are running XSan) and the acceptance of using guest access on the AFP service. Thus, a share point is defined as an auto-mount and all bound systems will have access to it. This allows all fonts to exist on a central location (the server) and be managed by IT.
Generally fonts on Xsan I would discourage. While everything usually works, Xsan filesystem will split the resource and data forks. With traditional Mac postscript fonts this could lead to problems. Create the share on the boot volume of the file server. That will ensure that the fonts are on an HFS volume and resource/data fork will be handled natively.
Also, you can look into the font server products from Extensis. I've never been a big fan of these, but your needs may be different.
Hope this helps.

  • Sharing fonts in flash

    Hi,
is it possible for sharing fonts across different movies? We
use embedded fonts in our movie and since we have many of them, it
is making the movie size bigger and longer time to load. We wanted
to check if we can embed a font in a movie and then import that
movie in my main movie so that we can still use the embedded font.
We use a textarea field which is dynamically created using
'createTextField' command in action sript. What we have in place is
something similar to a Rich Text editor where we will have the
embedded font in a dropdown and selection of the font will change
the style of the text in the textarea. Pls help me in fixing the
    problem. Appreciate any help.

  • How to include certain shared fonts (AS2 on CS3)

    Hey everyone,
I have a project which uses three different embedded fonts within it across a number of different swfs. As a result i have a separate fonts.swf file which contains the fonts and then i share them (so as not to have to load them within each swf file). The problem is that the three fonts can change depending on certain variables passed into the main swf file so the fonts.swf file actually contains about 12 fonts. Which three fonts are used are defined within the variables that are passed into the main swf file. Whilst this works fine it means that each time i have to load all 12 fonts which makes for a large filesize and takes quite a while to download on a slow connection (plus i want to add more fonts in the future).
I can't for the life of me work out how to dynamically embed shared fonts so i only have to load the 3 fonts that are actually needed. I am currently using this method but this involves manually placing a movieclip on the stage (or exporting it in the first frame). I can't see how to do this using AS2 (which would allow me to create a separate swf for each font). Similarly if i use a shared library i'm not sure how i would go about only importing certain libraries using AS2 (rather than doing it manually).
I would be incredibly grateful if anyone could point me towards the right way of doing this as i'm not sure what to do at this stage.
Thanks so much for your help in advance,
    Dave

To correctly use bold and italic style you have to embed a separate font for each in the library and set the font style in the font properties.
With the TextFormat whole text is put on one font so you have to to the following then:
    txtExample.htmlText = "<font face='bold'>I am bold</font> <font face='italic'>I am italic</font> <font face='default'>I am default</font>".
There is no other way than to use the font face property in html text to have different text styles within one TextField.
("bold" and "italic" are the linkage ids in the library)

was ok since i set it up more than a yr, actually is no good.
    rebind client, reboot client

The dropdown list probably uses the internal font name, and I think the only way to change this is with a font editor, like FontForge or FontLab.
Thanks again Tom. You're right. This seems to be the problem. I need a font editor to change the name. I downloaded Fontforge but couldn't figure out how to use it and Fontlab is too pricey for what I need. In any case, while searching for downloads I read that changing font names is not recommended. It just puzzles me that if I access the font via Mac HD/Library/Fonts, I get the name epgyobld.ttf yet it displays EPSON ëæçsèëëÃÇa in font book and application drop down font lists.
However, I chanced upon a work around in another forum. It involves creating a new font collection folder for each font I want to rename but cannot rename. The new folder is given the name I want and the un-renameable font is put into it e.g. I've placed EPSON ëæçsèëëÃÇa into a new collection folder called EPSON-FUTO-GYOSHO. It means having 8 new folders each containing one font - clumsy but at least I can now find the font when I need it..

  • Shared fonts character set

    Hi all,
I've got a big problem with font handling in flash. I'm
currently developing a international multilingual site.
I'm using shared fonts to be able to load different
    font-files for different languages.
My problem is how to create font files with different
    character sets?
If I create a font symbol in the library and assign a Class
to the symbol and check Export for ActionScript it works fine for
    Latin1 ( I think it's Latin1 ).
I can see in the size report that the correct characters are
    exported.
Now let's say I wanted to export a file with Thai characters.
If I add a dynamic textfield on stage, set font to my font-symbol
in the library and embed Thai characters and export I still get
    Latin1 characters.
If I then uncheck Export for ActionScript end export I get
the correct characters. The problem is that if I dont have any
Class tied to the font I cant access it in my FontManager class. My
FontManager loads and registers the fonts available to the app. I
then query the FontManager for the "bold" font or "regular" etc
    etc.
For this to work need a reference to the class to be able to
get the properties of the font, fontName, fontStyle and fontType. I
also have to register the font class with Font.registerFont( Class
I've even tried to change system language om my computer
    without luck.
    Any ideas anyone?

Open a DOS window and do the following :
    - set the codepage 1252
    C:\> chcp 1252
    - change the DOS window font to "Lucida Console".
    - set NLS_LANG environment variable, for example
C:\> set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 (change language and territory with yours, if different)
    - enter sqlplus and try

  • Font Agent Pro- sharing font sets

    Hi,
I m in need of a font manager that shares fonts within the LAN.
I tried Font Agent Pro, it works well.
But once fonts are shared between 2 systems(say A and B),A has 15 fonts, i need to activate 10 of them in one stretch instead of activating individually so that all 15 fonts are accessible in system B.
Just like sharing fonts in sets, i need to activate fonts(in sharing tab) in sets. Is it possible?
When i share fonts of 2 sets, they do not appear as sets in the shared system. Instead all fonts from 2 sets are mixed up and they r shown.
In the shared system, is it possible to activate one set of fonts(shared)?
If someone has worked with Font Agent Pro, please help me...
    Thank You

  • AIR crashes on loading swf with 'Imported for runtime sharing' fonts

    Hello everybody,
I have a trouble with an AIR application developped with Flex but the error seems to come from the Flash/AIR, after some searches a staff member (Flex harUI) said me that I could find more help for my trouble here.
I'm developping an AIR application which loads an external swf. This swf contains 'Imported for runtime sharing' fonts from another swf to reduce its size.
When the AIR application has finished to load (see message below) the whole application crashes without giving any error message except the usual "Process terminated unexpectedly" error message.
End Loading: [SWF] C:\Users\dev02\myProject\index.swf - 83,930 bytes after decompression
    Error Message:
    Process terminated unexpectedly.
    Launch command details:  "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4\sdks\4.6.0\bin\adl.exe" -runtime "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4\sdks\4.6.0\runtimes\air\win" "C:\Users\dev02\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Languages_Editor\bin-debug\Language_Editor-app.xml" "C:\Users\dev02\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Languages_Editor\bin-debug"
I use Flash Builder 4 (build 272416) with sdk 4.6.
    Full discussion here.
I tried to load the external swf with the most basics codes, it works with a Flash web app but not with a Flex/AIR app or a Flash/AIR app.
    Thanks for the help !

    Thanks for the anwser.
In fact, I cannot specify a swc because my main application is an editor of sub-applications where each one has its own library.
The bug remains when sharing a simple MovieClip too.
Maybe, if I explain my project it will be a little more clear.
    I'm developping a multi-languages module / application.
For each module, I have an external xml for texts. So in order to add a new language we don't need to recompile, just to change texts in the xml. But, I had to externalize my fonts, (imagine if each swf contains the whole characters set like latin, cyrillic, etc.).
And then, I have my main text editor application above the module, which loads texts xmls and a preview of the page where we need to change the text. (This is where it crashes, during the process of loading the preview).
My editor works great for translating, changing texts, modify images but without the preview, what is really frustrating.
    (not so ergonomic, I know...)
I hope it will help you to understand my trouble.
    regards

  • Sharing fonts on a server

I have a server location that I am trying to put our entire studio's fonts. We all want to be able to access, retrieve, and add fonts to the server and for all of us to be pulling from the same Font Book. How can I make this work?

    Richard,
iTunes will allow only 5 computers to access your shared music a day. If you still want to go this rout,
You can creat a playlist of what music you want shared
    Then;
    iTunes preferences,
    Sharing,
You can select to only share a specific playlist
You can even set a password so others can't access the music without a password.
Once again though, only 5 users a day.

  • Sharing Fonts to Network Users

    Server : Xserve running 10.6.8
    Clients : Mixed bag, 10.6.8 / 10.7.4
I need my network only users to be able to access some fonts. Here is my set up so far
I enabled guest access for AFP
I have created a folder on the server called "Library"
I created a share point from the "Library" folder
I set the permissions to rw for everyone
I set the sharepoint to appear in Network/Library
I enabled guest access for the sharepoint itself
I created a folder inside "Library" called "Fonts"
I placed all my fonts inside that folder
    The problem
When I log on as a network user, I see Network/Library/Fonts/<fonts are in there>
When I open Fontbook while logged in as that network user, under the Network location, no fonts are listed.
What else could I be doing wrong here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sharing Fonts with editors

I am an Art Director for a publishing company. After I lay out an article in InDesign, the editors make the changes. I gave the Editors the same fonts I use in my lay out but when they open up the same file on their Computer it still comes up with missing fonts.
We are all on MACs and InDesign CS2.
I am using Berkeley oldstyle, the font that is coming up as missing is Berkeley.t1.
I am using style sheets if that helps.
Any info you can pass along will be a big help.
    Tom

Part of the issue could be multiple fonts that share a name.
Such as Berkeley. There is the older Type 1 postscript version (T1) and the newer OpenType (OTF).
If you are using the T1 version, and the other person has the OTF (or it and the T1 version) installed the this problem can arise.
Your InDesign sees one copy of the font and calls it Berkeley Oldstyle
The other machine potentially sees two copies of the font, and calls them Berkeley (T1) and Berkeley (OTF).
The names don't match, even though the fonts do, so InDesign is unsure what font to use.
I have a similar issue that crops up in that some of the desigers here have Eurostile (OTF) OpenType and others have the older Eurostile (TT) true type
font installed. Becomes annoying working on the files when there is a constant shuffling of fonts to the other format.
