Sharing FAT-32 External HDD across network with a PC?

I have an External Driver that is formated as a FAT-32. I have it connected to my Mac. Would it be possible to share this driver across the network (not a wireless network) so that my PC can see the drive?

I am sharing my macbook pro over a network with windows 7, however through windows 7 I can access my whole computer instead of just the shared files!

    Hi Sig,
The issue is that i only want the shared folders to be accessed through windows 7.
Whats the point otherwise to have shared folders?

  • ITunes Library: Keep 2 external HDDs in sync with same music files

I am trying to run iTunes with 2 external HDDs, keeping in sync with each other. One large one for my desktop and a second portable one to take away from home when I need to travel. What is the best way to do this?
What I have done so far is changing the location of my media library via iTunes advanced preferences to the other ext HDD and then consolidating my library, but I noticed that it tries to re-copy the entire library or at least part of it so I end up with music files like:
    Back in Black.mp3
    Back in Black 1.mp3
I'm sure this has been thought of before and an obvious solution should be available, but I've never been able to find one, so I'd be really glad if someone could tell me how to do this!

  • External HDD to use with logic/sample libraries

So my current external HDD just freaked out, and after a year of using it with my MBP, it decided that its format was NTFS. Not sure how that works, but I dont want to have to experience that again . Anyway, I'm buying a new one, and was considering various possibilities such as enclosures with internal HDDs because it is cheaper, etc.
So far it has been recommended that I stick with a drive that has an internal power supply, because drives with external power supplies tend to have higher fail rates, and also because they are sometimes underpowered and drag down the I/O bus. Does this sound about right?
Someone told me to check out Rocstor AV and Glyph drives, which I did. Glyph seems way too pricey for me, but I found these drives from Rocstor:
    http://www.amazon.com/Rocraid-RAID1-Jbod-2XFW800-Hot-swap/dp/tech-data/B00141AY5 A/ref=deasmtd
    http://www.amazon.com/1-5TB-Rocport-7200-FW800-ESATA/dp/tech-data/B001M0KQPQ/ref =deasmtd
The 1 year warranty kind of makes me uneasy. Any advice regarding these 2 products? Does the Rocraid seems like a good deal for 2TB, but perhaps it's more than I need. Would I be able to buy any old 3.5'' internal drive and swap it with the 2 that it comes with?
    Thoughts?

  • External HDD or Network Server

I'm posting this here because it does fit into the category, and I really didn't know where else I should put it.
I currently have two LaCie 500GB external HDDs that I use for Time Machine and dumping digital video. I upgraded the HDD in my MacBook Pro to a 500GB HDD, so now I'm looking for something bigger in the external department. I had a friend that wants to buy the old drives from me because they support eSATA, so that will give me a return to put towards a new drive.
I was looking at G-TECH, and I think that's the route I want to go. Perhaps a 1.5 or 2TB drive should suffice for a long while.
Another option would maybe be a server. I currently have an old Gateway running under my desk as a simple web server. The specs are circa 2003, but it gets the job done. I was considering investing in something to act as a file and web server. I know I wouldn't be able to use Time Machine, but I would at least be able to back up the most important files or use something like SuperDuper.
I have an older desktop computer around here somewhere that has better specs than the Gateway: 2GHz AMD Athlon processor, 512MB of RAM and a 80GB HDD. It would be pretty cheap to upgrade the RAM and stick a couple large HDDs in the tower. Perhaps replace and add fans to keep it cooler and much more quiet.
Anyway, I guess I'm just looking for opinions and suggestions. Any comments will be appreciated. Thank you.

TM doesn't back up to network servers, or PCs.
    From: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
+Time Machine backs up to either an external disk (such as a USB 2.0 or FireWire-based third-party drive), a secondary internal disk or partition (if your computer supports additional internal drives), a Time Capsule, or an available Mac OS X Server version 10.5 volume.+
Your best bet, by far, is a directly-attached FireWire drive.

  • Chieftec blackbox external HDD, not working with GX740 Windows 7.

    Hi
    I have a Seagate Momentus® 7200.4 750GB
                            SATA 3Gb/s, 16MB, 7200RPM, 2,5"
using it with Chieftec CEB-25S-U3 HDD Chassi
                            2,5", SATA, USB 3.0, Aluminium, Svart/Silver
and it doesnt seems like the computer is actually accepting it as a harddrive or something.
It does find it, but i cant format it or use it as a harddrive, its just there.
Ive had the same problem with another external hdd, it didnt work on my gx740 with windows7, but it did work on an older computer with windows xp.
Dunno if it has anything to do with it, but the ENE CIR Receiver doesnt seem to be working in the computer. I dont rly know what it is tbh, but its under the HID Human interface Devices section.
Tryed to update the driver, but it just says it the latest drivers allready.
Ive allso had problems with the Bluetooth not working, so maybe the ENE CIR thing is the cause of that =P

  • Best format for external HDD for compatibility with Windows and Mac?

I have a couple of USB HDDs formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32)  which I use on both my iMac and Toshiba laptop  .
This week I discovered that I could have used  exFAT  which would have avoided the 4GB file limitation.
Apart from this, are there any other pros or cons associated with  exFAT  and would it be advisable to use this formatting in future?

I am cross using extern HDD and USB Stick's. Win7 64 and OSX 10.9. I had the best results when i format the drive with OSX (best cluster size by automatic). I am using small 16GB USB Stick's and large 2TB HDD.
Some Windows Programs does not work if they are not installed on NTFS and you also have no security on both systems in filesystem because exFat has no security. Could be also a bad idea to use a exFat drive for iPhoto Library but not tested.
I use exFat for Data like Music, Pictures, and Movies. To share home made things with friends and family.
If you use "active" Files like programs or databases use the "OS Native" filesystem, you have less problems :-)

  • Sharing an FAT-32 External HDD with a PC?

I have an External Driver that is formated as a FAT-32. I have it connected to my Mac. Would it be possible to share this driver across the network (not a wireless network) so that my PC can see and use the drive?

Sure. The disk format is irrelevant.
All you need to do is fire up the Samba server in your Mac. This will share the drive using the native Windows' file sharing protocol SMB.
By default, though, the Mac won't share an external drive, so you'll need to edit Samba's configuration to add the external drive to the list of valid share points.
If you're not comfortable poking around in the terminal, grab a copy of SharePoints which makes the job much easier. Come to think of it, even if you are comfortable getting hold of a copy of SharePoints is a good idea, anyway.

  • Sharing across network with Vista

iTunes on my new computer with Vista can see iTunes library on older XP machine on my family network, but no "arrow" appears next to library name, and when I select the shared library, it just disappears. I'm sure I missed something. Anyone got any insight?

I'm trying to print across our home wireless network  from my Windows 7 64-bit computer to a LaserJet 1220 connected to a Windows XP 32-bit computer.  My computer sees the printer in the network, but when I try to install it on my computer, it searches the web for a driver but can't find one.  There must be a way to get this to work.  Any ideas?

  • Apple TV and shared external HDD questions

I just ordered my 160gb Apple TV today. I can't wait to get it. I do have a few questions though.
Can the Apple TV sync and/or stream from an external HDD that is connected to the airport extreme and can it do this with the host PC and/or Mac with iTunes (I have both) turned off? Both computers access the same library shared on the external HDD.
If the above question can be done, can I buy music etc. from the apple tv directly and than have it sync to the external HDD first and then to the PC when powered on from the external HDD?
    Hopefully these questions make sense.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

Bummer, thanks for the fast reply. I thought it may be possible because on the apple tv page on apple.com it has an ad touting the enhanced streaming capabilities when paired with the airport extreme and since the airport extreme allows you to add an external HDD to be available wirelessly and shared with multiple computers it would seem that the scenario I posted above would work.
If there are any other recommendations and or Tweaks to get close to this please let me know.
Maybe the update will add this functionality.

  • Sync Problems With Ipod and External HDD

Ive just got a new 4G ipod after returing it because of HDD problems and when i try to sync with itunes, it manages to sync a random number of songs (ill get to that later) often about a 100 and the says "Ipod could not be written or read from". The thing is that i use an Lacie 80Gb External USB 2.0 Powered Harddrive as my Music library. Also it seems not to be USB timeout because ive tried to power both the External HDD and Ipod with an external powered USB 2.0 Hub. Ive found out that the number of songs that syncs each time depends on the songs, because it seems that some songs cannot just be copied (ive tried to copy them through finder and it dosent work either, but moving and/or deleting them works) and they arent in anyway different(what i know of) to the songs that manages to be synced to the ipod. None of the songs have any kind of DRM restrictions.
Ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Use An External USB 2.0 powered HDD as main media storage

Ive had it on my Ibook before and then moved it to the HDD because of Space Shortage, and then just added as ive aquired more music. Idon't Really Remeber but i think it worked before without any hiccups. oh well otherwise i can just delete those files because theyre only single files here and there. but its quite irritating because they don't seem to have any kind of corruption.

  • Using TM with laptops, Airport Extreme w/ external HDDs

I haven't tried this yet, but after reading about the laptop issues (unplugging, plugging into external HDDs to get caught up, etc.), I was wondering if TM would work by setting up external HDDs on the Airport Extreme as the backup destination for laptops? That way, it could sync wirelessly every hour, and you wouldn't have to worry about remembering to plug into the HDD at the end of the day, etc. Anyone tried this yet?
I've had problems in the past trying to get my external HDDs to work with Airport, so that's my first problem. Not sure how the speed will be either. I have 1 MacBook Pro and 2 MacBooks in the house, so this is somewhat of a big deal for my family. Backups right now (Tiger) are kinda left up to the user to remember to do (using .Mac backup program).

Officially at this point Time Machine can't use AirDisk (HD on an AirPort Extreme), though some have suggested workarounds. Since this was a feature in the late betas, according to many other threads discussing Time Machine via AirDisk, it's not too unlikely that this will become a feature once Apple fixes whatever caused it to be dropped from Leopard.

  • Privacy with external HDD ?

I'm pretty new to macs -and I was wondering about privacy and security when using an external HDD. If the external HDD was loaded with OSX and you were using it to work on, would there be any way to tell on the main HDD that an external HDD was used or traces of what programs were used or documents/files were opened on the main HDD?

No. Except if you save things to the main HD. As far as the computer knows, the ext HD is running it.

  • Error 0x00000709 Networked printer not working in a home network with HomeGroup enabled.

I should start by describing my network by device.
Gateway device - Motorola SB5120 SURFboard cable modem
Router/WAP device - Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router with 4 port Switch Model: WRT54G v4 Security: WPA2 with firewall.
Windows 7 Ultimate Desktop with Homegroup enabled (Printer driver installed & ethernet wired)
Windows 7 Pro Laptop set to homegroup for the Desktop (Ethernet wired and Wireless depending on the situation)
Windows 7 Home set to homegroup for the Desktop (Wireless)
    Brother Printer Model: HL-2170W (Wireless)
HP Printer Model: HP Officejet 6500A Plus (Wireless)
    What have I done?
Installed drivers on 2 of the 3 computers. The final computer (Win7 Home) was added in later and works fine when connecting to the internet through the WAP. However it does not even find the printer when trying to install the driver which is a part of the
process for driver installation for the Brother Printer.
I had set up the printer for two of the three computers and had it working at one time however in trying to get the printer set up for the final computer I somehow have messed up those settings.
During that setup I tried to move the printer to a networked printer (It was shared before and installed on the network with both the Desktop and the Win7Pro lappy able to print but it would not print for the new arrival to the Homenetwork. This caused
me to seek a solution which involved installing the proper driver in the Win7Home and the discovery that the driver installer could not find the Brother printer at all which prompted the moving of the printer to a networked printer.) (The Win7Home computer does
not find the HP printer either but that is a can of worms yet unopened.)
I am sure there are a few things that I did not do correctly and I may have left out some additional information which you may require. If I can help clarify this question please feel free to query me. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

May I know that are these two network printer with network adapter?  If they are installed on the network, you could add them and install the drivers  for Windows 7.
