Shut down scripts and command is this possible in OS X

In OS 9 it was possible to install things like Apple Script in the ‘Shut Down’ folder and these would be executed when the computer was told shut down.
Is there such a possibility in OS X? I have some script I would like to be executed when the user hits shut down.
Thanks

OK V.K., I think I am getting in over my head.
in the article is says find this line in the ttys document:
+#console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow" vt100 on secure window=/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"+
Mine says:
+#console "/usr/libexec/getty std.57600" vt100 on secure
console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow" vt100 on secure onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"+
So not sure how to make the changes it suggests

    Hi candybooist,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has steps you can take if your iPhone is unexpectedly powering off:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Cheers,
    - Ari

You have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What you can do to use it is download gfxcardstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar. Take along a printout of your panic.

Install maverik on my MacBook Pro, I had no problem. Two days later I was shut down suddenly and reboot with a closed padlock and asking me for a password that does not match any of mine. What  can I do?

Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
    1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
    2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
    3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
    4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
    Quit DU and restart.

  • My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??

    Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:

I have to shut down safari and then open up a whole new window to even attempt to get it to stop! It is driving me insane not to mention I need my desktop to work properly. • I have Windows 7. When I try to print an album cover on a CD I burned, I get an error message that  there is a problem and it shuts down iTunes and says will notify me once the problem is fixed

I have iTunes version 11.3.1.2 and a Windows 7 Professional aith Service Pack 1.  When I try to print a CD cover from a disc I burned, I get an error message that stops the printing task and shuts down iTunes and tells me once the problem is found they will notify me.  When this happened before I got sent a message from Apple that I needed to install a new verion of iTunes.  I believe I now have the latest iTunes version.  So why can't I print?
Is this the problem below?  Does the graphics driver cause the problem?
Solve a problem with NVIDIA Graphics Driver
NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped working properly.
A driver update, if available, might prevent this problem from recurring.

Try a different media. I have good luck using Maxell discs.

  • I downloaded silverlight to watch netflix but then my mac shut down suddenly and won't turn back on. How do i get it to turn on?

It's a brand new laptop and when i downloaded silverlight to stream netflix, it worked for like half an hour and then my computer just shuts down. i turn it on again and delete silverlight but a couple minutes later it shuts down again and this time it won't turn back on.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • HT1414 why does my iPhone 5s shut down unpredictably and needs to be reset every time to start back up?

why does my iPhone 5s shut down unpredictably and needs to be reset every time to start back up?

    Hi Cyprus11,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone is shutting down unexpectedly, I recommend going through these troubleshooting steps:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • IPhoto shuts down over-and-over when importing from iPhone

When trying to import photos from iPhone to iPhoto, iPhoto begins the import but then immediately shuts down. over and over again. I've looked online for a solution but have not found anything that I have tried. I am not very comfortable with technology so hesitate to try anything without some direction.

  • My iPad randomly shuts downs apps and safari...any suggestions? The pad it's self doesn't shut down..it just closes the page or app I am on..

My iPad randomly shuts down apps and Safari...any fixes for this?

Basic troubleshooting steps might help. If you are using the iPad 1, low memory issues may be causing the app and Safari to crash.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Definitely do this - Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now.

My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now. All other devices in my house are connecting to the wifi just fine. The laptop just refuses to connect. Any ideas on how to fix this/what it might mean?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for "A battery you should not remove yourself"
Check the mage safe connector and port for any debris.

  • My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed

    Hi,
I am having a problem. My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed. I close the lid, and then I hear the shutdown music and then when I open it again it automatically restarts OSX and all my windows and programs are closed, any info gone.
This doesn't happen all the time. Just once a day or maybe twice a day. It seems like it happens basically when I have my computer just the way I want it, to keep an eye on things for the day.
I just recently switched to a mac and while somewhat savvy, I am not a programmer or techie, but it seems to me that when I shut the lid, it should do the same thing every time.
I have a intel core 2 duo 17 inch macbook pro with 2.33 processr and 2 gig ram, if that helps.
I am in alaska and there is no genius bar here and I am hoping to figure this out before I begin bugging our local independant mac store about this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lylah
17 inch Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   intel core 2 duo 2.33g. 2 gig ram

    Ahhh, enlightenment!
That would make sense. What I usually do, after closing the lid, is to wait for the apple to turn off and then set it down on it's side leaning it against the side table. I will try to wait for it to indicate that it is fully asleep before I move it next time. Personally, I prefer my computer to NOT fall asleep at all, but I am told it is not an option. Apparently this function is hardware related accoring to my local mac shop. They tracked it down for me because I hated this feature when I first bought my computer and was trying some way around it.
The shutdown music I was refering to was that music the mac makes when shutting down, which doesnt usually occur when it goes to sleep, unless it is malfunctioning like this.
What does resetting the pmu do? (what is a pmu as well?)
    Thank you very much.
    Lylah

downloaded 10.9  all well 'til I get desktop and can't enter my password, message of error, and it shuts down:  reboot and error reappears"your computer     restarted because of a problem. touch any key.....etc'  75-yr-old needs guidance.........running 10.8.5 til today................????????  Can run in safe boot, but what do i do now ???  thanks
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), Intel core i5 2.3GHz

Well, after some thought, I did a 'safe boot', did a disk verify and repair in Disk Utility, repaired permissions in DU and had the same problem I'd mentioned in post.
SO, I went back in (safe boot.........that is, hold down start button, then 'shift') and went to applications and removed or uninstalled any apps that I thought might be interferring with the re-boot or, specifically, with my being unable to sign in with my p/w.........(at the first key stroke, it would crash and give the 'error' message)....I had both Webroot and Dashlane installed that I thought could interfere with password recognition (Webroot protects from viruses, et all and Dashlane is a password codifying appl.) I took out whatever else I thought might not be friendly and, guess what ?? When I signed out of 'safe' mode, and rebooted normally, it worked.........and has been working properly for 3-4 hrs now, so guess it's good-to-go..........seems like it...........hope this helps anyone with the same problem I'd had...........no need to visit "genius bar" some 55 miles from here............guess us mid-seventies guys ain't too old for learnin'...........G'Day, Mates !!
