Shutting down a persistant ap

My mother-in-law's computer wasn't originally wireless so when she got a wireless cable modem I got a USB wireless unit for her. It works fine; signs on at start-up. The problem is that most times it won't quit when I choose to shut down. The shut down usually times-out. After the time-out all I have to do is quit the program and then shut down. The thing is, my mother-in-law isn't very good at if-thens. I can't leave her any dialog boxes, decisions or extra clicks.
My question is; is there anything I can do to force the program to comply and quit when she chooses "Shut Down?"
TIA,
Peter

Hi Sairam,
first you have to block producers.
Afterwards you can ensure that the write-behind queue is written out on all nodes by (optionally calling the flush method on the read-write backing map on each node e.g. from an Invocation and then) waiting for JMX showing that the write-behind queue is empty on each node.
Once there are no dirty entries in the wb queue, then you can just shut down consumers (anyone who reads from the cache).
After ensuring that no one wants to read from the cache, there is no point in having the data in the cache, therefore you can clear the caches with NamedCache.clear().
After this who cares that there is a redistribution of entry partitions.
No need to destroy() the caches, clear()-ing them is enough, except if you have backing map listeners which would hold up the execution of the clear() method.
Best regards,
Robert

I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My iPad mini is stuck on the Apple symbol. I tried a reset and it shut down. But when I turned it back on the problem persists thanks for any help

my iPad mini is stuck on the Apple symbol. I have tried a reset and it shut down. When I turned it back on, the problem persists. Thanks for any help.

If the reset doesn't help, the next step would be to restore the device to factory settings using iTunes on a computer. If you can backup the iPad first, do so and then restore to factory settings. If it all works out properly, you can restore the backup after you finish. If you didn't or can't backup, the iPad will be erased when you restore to factory settings.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
IF you can't restore that way, the next step would be to try using recovery mode.

  • My PowerBook shuts down on its own (persists when RAM is changed)

    Hi all,
My PowerBook shuts down on its own. It will display the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?", and even with me clicking Cancel, it will just shut off immediately after displaying the sign, as if I pressed and held the Power Button.
I've sinced change the RAM back to the default piece, but the problem persists.
Moreover it's a random, although frequent and frustrating, occurance, so I'm not sure if the service centre will take it in since I cannot reproduce the problem.
    I'm using it on a 1920x1200 display.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
first you can try resetting Power Manager.
the rpoblem may be caused by some software bug, try making new user, then log in as new user and work for a while - if it works ok it's something in the original user software.
then you can try "archive and install" of the OS.
also, problem maybe caused by bad keyboard, top case (where the power button is) or logic board.
anyways keep files backed up and maybe get it diagnosed by service shop.

  • Persistent USB Arch installation fails to boot after first shut down

    Hey all,
I've recently installed Arch on a 32-GB USB flash drive (with the help of the wiki, of course).  I have some experience installing arch on my computers, so the process went relatively smoothly.  As some background info, I AM using UUIDs in both the bootloader and the fstab file, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyways, the problem itself: I have arch installed and ready to go, and it boots up fine (the first time).  The thing is, after I shut down, if I try to boot the USB drive again, it simply hangs there-- no boot.  What's weirder is not only does it not boot, but it also freezes the host computer at that point in the boot cycle.  I mean, everything will be frozen up at the startup BIOS/splash whatever screen when the USB key is in, but once I take it out the computer will boot up regularly.  It's really strange.
If I reinstall the bootloader on the USB drive then everything works again (that is, until I reboot).
Is the bootloader somehow getting corrupted while shutting down?  I have tried using both GRUB and SYSLINUX (not at the same time of course) but they both behave the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time,
    Ushahin

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Did you remember to do this?
If not, mount the partition(s) starting with the root partition first, chroot into it, edit that file and re-generate the initramfs. Then reboot with the reboot command, don't forcefully shut it down using the power button or something like that.
It could also be a BIOS issue. Restore its defaults, set "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second (if you have an optical drive), "Internal Storage" third. Then select the USB stick as the first to boot in the boot priority screen.

  • Mac Book Pro (OS 10.4.11) WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! STILL PERSISTS!

My Mac Book Pro 15", 2.33 GHz, 3 GB memory - runninfg Mac OS X 10.4.11 WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!
When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black.
I searched the forums and tried the suggested fixes: trashing these 2 .plist preferences and reboot.
    Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
    HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
this worked for a couple of cycles then the problem retuned/
Hey, Mac geniuses and wizards - what is going wrong with my macboo

Have you ever waited and let it do it's thing? I was ready to force mine to quit the other day after waiting 2-3 minutes, and all of sudden, it shut down. I restarted it and then shut it down again. This time it was normal.
Try this yet before doing an Archive and Install.
    1. Boot from your system CD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.
    2. Use a utility like Onyx to clean your system cache out, including your kernel cache. The computer will restart slow right after that, but I keep rebooting the computer about 3 times in a row, and I'm back up to speed.

  • My iPhone shuts down with certain apps and says dead Batt. with plenty left. Now it wont turn on after starting up and turning off many times

I got my Dads old iPhone 3GS for Christmas and reset it to its factory settings. It had this problem with my Dad to, thats why he got a new phone. It was claiming that the battery was dead when I opened certain apps eventhough it had plenty of battery, It made me charge it and then said it was plenty charged. Why? That happened multiple times. That's what happened to my Dad as well. This however, is me only. O.K. so, the other day, it did it's battery dead shutdown thing, so I plugged it in, but it kept starting up, then shutting down again, starting up, and shutting down again. Now I've left it on the charger for about a days, it's not on the charger now, and it won't turn on. Help!!!!!!

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Your computer shut down because of a problem. Mac grey screen

Recently I have been having issues with my Mac.
The computer will freeze for no apparent reason and the screen goes ever so slightly blue, then crashes to grey screen - 'Your computer has shut down... blah blah blah' and then it restarts itself and i get a kernel panic (Below is the msot recent one).
At christmastime I installed extra RAM which could be a problem but I think the problem occurs when using Google Chrome. I have tried to switch to Safari for the time being to see if that eliminates the problem but I did use Chrome at some point today.
I believe that I lasted longer without the problem while I was using Safari.
Any help reading the panic log would be appreciated!
    Cheers
As I was writing this (on Safari) the screen went completely black and restarted to the grey screen

    Hi kiplin1995,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you have not already, I would recommend removing the additional RAM and seeing if the issue persists. See this article for more information:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636
Check internal RAM and third-party hardware
    Turn off your Mac.
Reseat the Apple RAM, and remove third-party RAM and third-party internal hardware.  If you do not have the Apple RAM that came with the system, reseat the third-party RAM.
    Turn on your Mac.
Use your Mac for the amount of time it would usually take for a kernel panic to occur.
If the kernel panic does not occur: The third-party RAM or internal third-party hardware may need to be replaced.
If a kernel panic does occur:  Bring your Mac to an Apple Store, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service and support. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • Mac wont shut down, restart or sleep - corrupted software update?

My Mac Pro (2007 - OSX 10.6.7) will no longer shut down, restart or sleep. When I try to shut down, it logs me out of my user account, shows the light blue screen, momentarily shows the Leopard space background screen, before showing the blue screen again, and finally returning to the login screen prompting for my user/password.
The only way to poweroff from this point is to hold down the power switch until it forces a power down. This issue has been present for the last two weeks or so ever since I did a Software Update containing a security update. Initially it just failed to perform that update, although after a few days it did do the update, seemingly by fluke. After that, the problem persisted and now there is a new update (Fonts) which again fails to update.
I have tried all of the following:
Power off Mac, unplug power and leave for a few seconds
Power on Mac holding down Ctr + Opt + R + P (resetting PRAM etc)
Boot up from install CD and perform Disk repair (it did find problems with the disk and repaired them)
    Check and repair permissions
Delete Software Update related plists & caches from ~/Library and /Library
Still the problem persists. Examining the logs shows me this:

I can paste the crash report referred to in the logs if that would be helpful but for now will leave it out as it's huge and largely full of gobledygook.
I'm at my wits end now. I've always been very proud that in ~4 years of Mac ownership I've never had to reinstall OSX - something I used to do on an anual basis with Windows. My next step probably is a full reinstall, but I really do consider it a drastic step and a last resort.
Here's hoping that the Mac Support Community can help me out
    Thanks in advance.

As a followup, upon the advice from someone else I created another user account (non admin) and logged in as that user. From that account I could successfully power down.
I'm still convinced the issue is related to Software Update as examining the logs showed none of the Software Update related entries as above:

  • How to find out why my MBP will always try to shut down after 1 hour

    Dear all,
this is a question too complicated for me to answer; I have previously tried to solve this problem in a usenet forum (comp.sys.mac.system) - but we didn't get it solved there, and I finally gave up on it. However, it still persists, and it is so annoying that I want to try another approach on it this time using the Apple Discussions Forum.
The problem is as follows: my relatively new (bought in december '09) MacBook Pro 13" (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM) has a problem: always when I leave it untouched for one hour, something within the system would try to make the computer shut down (system halt). Please note right that this seems NOT to be a hardware-related issue (al least not simply a bad mother-board or sth. similar - there are a lot of threads about MacBooks that seem to shut down immediately, like fainting - this is not the case here). Instead, the system behaves like anytime when a user-requested shut down is invoked - for example, the running applications would check if any changes should be saved, and ask questions. The only thing is: I did not request a system shut down, and even more: I do not WANT the system to shut down. In fact, this whole problem is extremely annoying, since it constantly messes up my open documents (e.g. the TextMate workspace I usually set up, or similar things), forcing me to reestablish my workspace at least once a day. Over time, this can be very annoying for a computer that's used for work!!
During the course of my earlier discussions in the forum, we tried to find out what makes the computer go down - looking through the system log files etc. - but to no avail: we couldn't trace back the event that has caused the system to invoke the shut down procedure. However, it seems that this issue is related to the Mac operating system, and not the hardware - and this is why I ask this question here (and not in the MacBook Pro section). It may be that we simply didn't look in the right place - or not with the right tools - and I hope that there may be some people here with some new ideas how to trace the reason for this procedure. Everything I can tell now with some certainty (and I couldn't do it before in the usenet forum) is that the shutdown seems to be invoked about one hour after the system has been left untouched by a user (no key strokes, no mouse movements); I know this because I use my Mac for a wake up call now - and, since I sometimes need more than an hour for that, I can tell that this problem causes iTunes to quit one hour after the Mac has booted (which makes my wake-up music to switch off... and some of the running applications with no changes to save).
It would be very important for me to solve and remove this annoying problem, and I think that this really shouldn't happen! Needless to say, I haven't set the energy savings settings such that the system would shut down after one hour (in fact, I have set the system to always stay on when attached to a power supply); still, the problem prevails.
Does anyone of You specialists have a good clue or smart suggestion where (or probably how) else to look to find out what causes the shutdown? Thanks a lot for taking the time and considering this annoying problem!
    Best,
    Björn

Yes - it is a bit frightening... Had other Macs before this MacBook (Pro), and never experienced such a problem. Don't know - of course I look into the Preference settings from time to time, and maybe I have changed that setting on the other computers... it never occurred to me...
What an annoyance such a simple decision to make the auto-shutdown after one hour a default can be! Probably, Apple reconsiders :-D I'd rather prefer an auto-lock of the account (instead of an auto-log off)... but I believe it has been expressed often enough that, in this particular case, the - pardon me - Windows-solution (to offer a simple lock of the account, the Windows-L-key combination, IIRC) is much more practical... to copy that behaviour under Mac OS X, You'd have to go through lengths...
Anyway! Pondind, thank You very much!!! Solved a kind of embarassing, but huge problem of mine!
    Best,
    Björn

  • My iMac (27-Inch, 2012) is randomly shutting down

    Hello,
Wanted to ask here before I bring my iMac in.
I'm having an issue with my iMac randomly shutting down from what seems like a KERNEL PANIC.
I haven't been able to pin down what is causing the shutdowns/kernel panic.
We usually leave this iMac on 24/7 since we use it with Apple TV.
I started noticing about a month ago coming back to the computer after a few hour I would log in and I would get a window asking to restore my apps because
the computer had shut down due to some error/problem.  I will usually submit the report to Apple when asked to do so.
It's now happening much more frequently. I'd say about every hour or so. Even when I'm using the computer after a while it'll start to feel sluggish, almost like a quarter to half second delay for mouse and keyboard commands. Then after about 10 minutes it slows down even more until "POOF" black screen....then Kernel Panic grey screen asking me to press a key to restart.  It seems to happen regardless of the application I am using.
At first I thought it was one of my USB hard drives or USB HUB that was causing the issue but last night i unmounted all drives and peripherals (except mouse and keyboard) to see if that helped.  Woke up this morning to the same login after Kernel Panic / shutdown.
Repaired Disk Permissions then ran apple hardware test this morning. said everything was working correctly. Problem still persists.
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated (CPU info + Sys Dialog Report below)
