Simple applet compiling error

Hi!
I feel very embarrassed to ask this question:
This is an applet that returns 1 error after compiling:
/* an applet which uses Times Roman italic and bold font, 28 point size, drawn green on a yellow background*/
import java.awt.Graphics;
import java.awt.Font;
import java.awt.Color;
public class Lesson7Applet extends java.applet.Applet
     Font f = new Font("TimesRoman", Font.BOLD, Font.ITALIC, 28);
     public void paint (Graphics g)
          g.setFont (f);
          g.setColor(Color.green);
          setBackground(Color.yellow);
          g.drawString("Lesson 7 was easy", 10, 30);
Error message after compiling:
C:\java>javac Lesson7Applet.java
Lesson7Applet.java:7: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : constructor Font (java.lang.String,int,int,int)
location: class java.awt.Font
Font f = new Font("TimesRoman", Font.BOLD, Font.ITALIC, 28);
1 error (pointing at "new")
Could anyone help!
Much obliged
emni

Hi emni!
It's simple:
Font f = new Font(
"TimesRoman", // font name
Font.BOLD & Font.ITALIC, // font style
28); // font size
Best regards.

  • Applet compilation error

    New to java, struggling along... I am trying to make the following applet, it wont compile, likely due to an error in syntax somewhere. Can anyone take a look at this and point it out?
    import java.util.Properties;
    import javax.mail.*;
    import javax.mail.internet.*;
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    public class MailExample5 extends Applet {
    public void start () {
    // Get system properties
    Properties props = System.getProperties();
    // Setup mail server
    props.put("mail.smtp.host", "mail.axess.com");
    // Get session
    Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
    // Define message
    MimeMessage message = new MimeMessage(session);
    // Set the from address
    message.setFrom(new InternetAddress("[email protected]"));
    // Set the to address
    message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO,
    new InternetAddress("[email protected]"));
    // Set the subject
    message.setSubject("Hello JavaMail");
    // Set the content
    message.setText("Welcome to JavaMail");
    // Send message
    Transport.send(message);
    The compilation errors I get are;
    - 7 errors
    - "unreported exception javax.mail..."; all 7 errors are the same beginning description

    I read the tutorial, my understanding of exceptions is that they detect areas in which the program runs into a problem, then figure out what to do with the problem from there depending on where the exception occured.
    Unfortunately in the program above, the exceptions are occuring during compilation and not the actual running of the applet (I cant run it if I cant compile it). Even if I "catch" the exception, and am told where the exception is happening in such a small program, I dont know what the problem with the program is to correct it.

  • Simple assignment compiler error

    Hello,
    I'm trying to compile the following statement:
    // this is of type FileServer
    // v is of type Viewer, which might or might not implement LoggerClient
    Object caller = ((v instanceof LoggerClient) ? ((LoggerClient)v) : this);However, compiler gives me
    c:\projects\FileServer.java:39: incompatible types
    found : FileServer
    required: LoggerClient
    Why?
    Thank you for your help!
    Elana

    I think you are having a problem of operator Precedence.
    The problem is that ?: operator is one of the last in the list.
    In your line of code:
    Object caller = ((v instanceof LoggerClient) ? ((LoggerClient)v) : this);
    happens the following order:
    1 - (LoggerClient) v
    2 - (v instanceof LoggerClient
    3 - ((v instanceof LoggerClient) ? ((LoggerClient)v) : this)
    4 - caller = ((v instanceof LoggerClient) ? ((LoggerClient)v) : this);
    The cast (LoggerClient) v is, in this case not necessary.
    Here you can find operator precedence:

  • Compilation Error: "class or interface expected" for simple EAR???

    Dear all,
    I have access to the customers NW CE 7.1 SP07 and of course I am using the corresponding NWDS 7.1 SP07 that comes with this CE installation. I am trying to study JEE 5 @ SAP and I have created a very simple Application (from the Book http://www.sap-press.de/katalog/buecher/titel/gp/titelID-1480).
    In NWDS I have created the following 4 projects:
    1. Dictionary Project
    Describes 2 Tables (TMP_EMPLOYEES and TMP_ID_GEN)
    2. EJB 5 Project
    Contains a stateless EJB + local business interface + Entity class.
    The EJB accesses the entity class, which is mapped to a simple table (TMP_EMPLOYEES).
    3. Dynamic Web Project
    Contains actually only one JSP (index.jsp) which allows to the local business interface for creating a new Entity.
    4. Enterprise Application Project (EAR)
    Creates a package from 2. and 3.
    I have successfully deployed both the Dictionary Project and the EAR (all to the same server).
    But If I call the corresponding URL via web browser I get the following error:
    500   Internal Server Error
    "Error in compiling [/EmployeeWeb/index.jsp] in application [sap.com/EmployeeEar]."
    Details: "The WebApplicationException log ID is [005056841108002A00000070000007AC0139C8D8862D3EED]."
    In the "Log Viewer" of the "SAP NetWeaver Administrator" (via browser...) I have found the following:
    Message: Processing HTTP request to servlet [jsp] finished with error.
    The error is: com.sap.engine.services.servlets_jsp.server.jsp.exceptions.CompilingException: Error in executing the compilation process: [ Compilation Failed! Exit Code=1

    As you can see there is some compilation error, it says 3 times "'class' or 'interface' expected". If i remove all the relevant EJB java code from my index.jsp everything works fine. So I guess there must be some problem with finding the resources. Unfortunately this "logging" is not helpful at all (thank you SAP!). In NWDS everything is fine no problems at all!!!
    Who can help me here with this?
    Thanks in Advance

    I have found the issue.
    in the index.jsp I have the following lines:
    <!-- Import Statements -->
    <%@ page import="javax.naming.InitialContext" %>
    <%@ page import="com.sap.demo.session.EmployeeServicesLocal;" %>
    Now check the end of the second import ==> ;
    Removing the semicolon solves the issue. But the SAP error message is still not very helpful to me.

  • Simple Java created with compilation errors.

    Hi,
    While I am using Oracle for many years (currently 9.2.0.6.0) I am completely new to Java in the database.
    I found a very simple example to get started (please see SQL*Plus dump below) ... but I get a compilation error. Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong?
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE AND COMPILE JAVA SOURCE NAMED Fibonacci AS
    2 public class Fibonacci
    3 {
    4 public static int fib (int n)
    5 {
    6 if (n == 1 || n == 2)
    7 return 1;
    8 else
    9 return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2);
    10 }
    11 }
    12 /
    Warning: Java created with compilation errors.
    SQL> show errors java source Fibonacci
    No errors.
    SQL>
    (It must be a simple thing, the example I found seems correct, but what about grants, settings etc.)
    Thanks in advance,
    Stefan

    Stefan,
    I cannot see anything in your code that would cause a compilation error. However, according to the example in the "Oracle 9i SQL Reference", it looks like you need to enclose the name in double quotes, as in:
    CREATE OR REPLACE AND COMPILE JAVA SOURCE NAMED "Fibonacci" AS ...Alternatively (and this is the way I do it), you could compile the class outside of the database, and load the compiled class file. Just create a file called "Fibonacci.java" (that contains your java code), compile it, and then use the "loadjava" tool to load the "Fibonacci.class" file into the database. Please refer to the Oracle 9i Java Developer's Guide for more details.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Compiler Error with simple vi using MatLab script nodes

    While attempting to build a simple vi to test the capabilities of LabView's interface with MatLab, I received a compiler error message that said I should report the problem to National Instruments Tech Support. The error said, "reference to undefined label from: refPC=0x41C." I've attached the vi that created the error. I am using LabView 7.0 on a PC running Windows 98.
    Attachments:
    Compliererror.vi ‏11 KB

    I don't know if this will help your problem, but there is a fix for some problems with LabVIEW 7.0 and Matlab:

  • Simple Create procedure throws compile error

    I have a table MyTable with two fields key and value. The table has few records with some number values.
    I want to increment this number value and return the updated number value from a procedure.
    Below is the procedure that I wrote. When I try to run this, I get this error from the SQLPlus prompt.
    Warning: Procedure created with compilation errors.
    Here is the procedure.
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE GetNextValue
         (v_key IN VARCHAR2(25), v_value OUT NUMBER DEFAULT -1) AS
    BEGIN
         UPDATE MyTable SET value=value+1 WHERE key=v_key;
         SELECT value INTO v_value FROM MyTable WHERE key=v_key;
    END GetNextValue;
    I stored this in a .sql file.
    Also is there any way that I can write the body in single query to both update the value and return it in the return variable?
    Appreciate your help.

    Hi,
    When creating a PL/SQL procedure, always say SHOW ERRORS on a separate line right after the /. That will geive you more detailed error messages.
    In this case, you'll probably get "OUT and IN OUT formal parameters may not have default expressions".
    If you want v_value set to -1 in the event that there is no row with key=v_key, then you can say:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE GetNextValue
    (   v_key    IN   VARCHAR2
    ,   v_value  OUT  NUMBER
    AS
    BEGIN
        UPDATE MyTable
            SET value=value+1
            WHERE key=v_key;
        SELECT value
            INTO v_value
            FROM MyTable
            WHERE key=v_key;
    EXCEPTION
        WHEN  NO_DATA_FOUND  THEN
            v_value := -1;
        WHEN OTHERS  THEN
            RAISE;
    END GetNextValue;
    SHOW ERRORS

  • Simple Applet does not run in IE 5.0

    Hi,
    Am trying to run a simple applet in IE 5.0 on MS Window NT Server machine. I disabled the
    JVM option in Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Java column. I have MS VM(Miscrosoft Virtual Machine) JIT(Just In Time Compiler) enabled. As a
    result any applet will run on the MS VM JIT only. I use a simple applet in which I just add
    a button to the applet. My applet runs fine in JVM Ver 1.4 but when I try to run it in MS VM
    using JIT I get the following exception
    Error loading class: ImageTest1
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ImageTest1

    Can any one help me in solving the problem ? My applet source is
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class ImageTest1 extends Applet
         public ImageTest1()
              System.out.println("On the Console !!!!");
         public void init()
              Button bt = new Button("Hello !!");
              this.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              this.add(bt);
    Thanks,
    Bala

    Take your HTML file and convert it with the HTMLConverter that comes with your JDK, this will create an <OBJECT> tag from the existing <APPLET> in the HTML file. With the newly created <OBJECT> tag, IE will know that it's supposed to run your applet with Java plugin (the only way for you to run an applet that uses swing.

  • Help....Simple Applets Not Working..

    I have been trying to get this simple HelloWorld applet to execute with no luck. I have confirmed that my Java Plug-In is setup with the IE Browser and JRE C:\Java\j2sdk1.4.1_1. I also enabled the Java console and JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled in the IE Browser.
    When I select the HTML template, I get an "Loading Java Applet Failed" error message. When I type java HelloWorld, "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main" error even if change "paint" to "main". When I type appletviewer HelloWorld.class, nothing happens.
    I have been going through some of the tutorials and getting the same results. The tutorials have suggested that I install the Java Plug-In, which I have.
    Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks....
    I have the following setup:
    HelloWorld.bat
    SET PATH=.;C:\Java\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin;
    SET CLASSPATH=.;C:\Java\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin;C:\Program Files\ora91\jdbc\lib\classes12.zip
    javac HelloWorld.java
    HelloWorld.java
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    public class HelloWorld extends Applet {
         public void paint (java.awt.Graphics g) {
              g.drawString("Hello, world!", 100, 25);
    HelloWorld.html
    <html>
         <body>
              <applet code="HelloWrold.class" height=50 width=400></applet>
         </body>
    </html

    This problem has been correct...Please ignore...

  • Compile Error: "schema 'name' does not exist

    Im trying to build a program that quereys a table in a database but i keep getting this error. Am i missing a link between the files or am i missing a line of code in my program??

    Apologies. I receive a compiler error which reads as follows;
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver
    java.sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: Schema 'DEMO' does not exist
    Heres the main body of code i am trying to execute.
    public class Main {
    * @param args the command line arguments
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    // TODO code application logic here
    try{
    Class.forName("org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver");
    }catch(ClassNotFoundException e){
    System.out.println(e);
    try{
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:derby://localhost:1527/SimpleDBDemo", "demo", "demo");
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM DEMO.Table1");
    while (rs.next()) {
    String s = rs.getString("Name");
    float n = rs.getFloat("Age");
    System.out.println(s + " " + n);
    }catch(SQLException e){
    System.err.println(e);
    I am using NetBeans IDE and have created a database under: Services->Databases-> Java DB->SimpleDBDemo.
    I have a database connection in which theres a simple table (called "TABLE1") created which contains the names and ages of two people.
    Hope this makes the problem a bit clearer.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Did you find a way out of this error? Could you share the solution with me? Because I am facing a problem that looks just like the one you had.

  • Af:serverListener on jspx page - compilation error - jDeveloper 11.1.1.4.0

    I have a weird problem that adding a serverListerner component on jspx page causes compilation error:
    The class of the deferred-methods return type "{0}" can not be found.
    No property editor found for the bean "javax.el.MethodExpression"
    If I remove serverListener (to pass compilation) and then add it again in run-time, it works normally (the backing bean method is being triggered correctly, including passing params, etc).
    It is happening only on the current project, but when I make a test case it works normally. I suspect it has something with the project settings, but I couldn't find the cause regarding that the project has advanced and there are so many differences to be able to do simple comparison.
    Does anyone know what could be the reason for af:serverListener to break compilation, please?
    ... from jspx page...
    <af:resource type="javascript">
    function aaa(event) {
    var esrc = event.getSource();
    AdfCustomEvent.queue(esrc, "bbb", {fvalue : "TEST"},true);
    event.cancel();
    </af:resource>
    <af:inputText label="Label 1" id="it1">
    <af:clientListener method="aaa" type="click"/>
    <af:serverListener type="bbb" method="#{backing_bean.onClick}"/>
    </af:inputText>
    ... from BB ...
    public void onClick(ClientEvent clientEvent) {
    String message = (String) clientEvent.getParameters().get("fvalue");
    System.out.println(message);
    }

    Hi,
    Try like this
    <trh:script>clientListenerMethoName= function(event) {
    var source = event.getSource();
    AdfCustomEvent.queue( source, "serVerListenerType", {}, false); }
    </trh:script>
    Next :
    <af:clientListener method="clientListenerMethoName" type="click"/>
    <af:serverListener type="serVerListenerType" method="#{beanName.methodName}"/>

  • JSP Compilation Error when using OC4J out of the box

    Hello.
    After installing Java jdk 1.5.0_05, setting ORACLE_HOME, setting JAVA_HOME, rebooting, and installing OC4J standalone straight out of the box, I have deployed a simple web project that consists of just one JSP. I receive the following error message:
    NOTIFICATION J2EE JSP-0008 Unable to dispatch jsp Page: oracle.jsp.provider.JspCompilationException: Errors compiling: C:\LocalApps\OC4J\j2ee\home\application-deployments\oc4j_jsp\persistence\_pages\\_Test.java<pre></pre>
    I have deployed a number of Flex2 applications without incident. What am I missing here? Another odd thing is that my organization has OAS running and it can render JSPs fine.
    Any help is appreciated thanks,
    Mike
    P.S. I have gone back and set the JSP debug switches, but they do not yeild much more info. Here is the stacktrace:
    NOTIFICATION J2EE JSP-0008 Unable to dispatch JSP Page : oracle.jsp.provider.JspCompileException: <H3>Errors compiling:C:\LocalApps\OC4J\j2ee\home\application-deployments\oc4j_jsp\oc4j_jsp\persistence\_pages\\_Test.java</H3><pre></pre>

    I had the very same Problem, and I spent a lot of time on it.
    When installing Oc4j as a service using Javaservice opnesource, I had no problem, even using J.D.K 1.6:
    %JSEXE% -install %JSNAME% %JVMDIR%\jvm.dll -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -Djava.class.path=%OC4J_HOME%\oc4j.jar -start oracle.oc4j.loader.boot.BootStrap -params -config %OC4J_HOME%\config\server.xml -out %OC4J_HOME%\log\OC4J_service_stdout.log -err %OC4J_HOME%\log\OC4J_service_stderr.log -current %JSBINDIR% -auto -description OC4JService
    Then I wanted to install it using "ServiceMill" or "Javaservice Wrapper", becuase it has a better control on the process and I had that awfull compilation error.
    I guess it is because ServiceMills uses java.exe and javaservice the .dll to launch the oc4j, no idea.
    Anyway, thank you very much!!!!!
