Simple question: masking text in flex

I'm sure I'm missing something really obvious on this, so
forgive me if I have, but is there a way to set the background
color on text? A label or a text field don't seem to allow you to
change the background color. So far the only way I can figure out
to do it is put a label or text field within a tile of the color I
want, which is cumbersome and difficult to size the way I want etc.
Is there an easier way?

I think you can use the opaqueBackground property on a label
to make it
opaque and then I _think_ you can set backgroundColor on it,
even though
this isn't documented.

Simple question around text box action listeners....

Hi, I'm hoping there is a simple solution to this question.

You still have people totally confused about what you are asking. Some people think you have an AWT based question. Others think its a Swing related question.
Your question is about an ActionListener, but you code shows a PropertyChangeListener. It seems like you are asking about a Swing component, but there is a Swing forum for Swing related questions.
We are not mind readers. Ask a well thought out question and you will generally get a well though out response.

Simple question about flex and AS 3.0

Hi, this might sound like a simple question so I apologize...
I have both a copy of flex 2 and 3, and i want to simply code in AS
3.0 not mxml. I referred to the help of both flex 2 and 3, and all
i could come up with is "you can add dynamic behavior to your
documents using actionscript", which means to me, you only write
your functions in AS and create instances with mxml (...ugh).
personally, i find mxml to be ugly (mainly because it looks like
html to me), and i'd rather not use it. coming from programming in
an IDE in Java, it seems like it would be nicer to have something
similar, all the while having the power and cool features of flash.
I'm not fully educated in this matter so i understand that i could
be totally wrong.
i mean, if i have to code in mxml, i will. i'm a web
programmer for a living, and if a more experience programmer said
something like "if you don't code mxml in flex, you'll never get a
job coding in flex", i would trust the advice, and learn the ugly
code. :)
yes, i do have Flash cs3, it's great but it seems like a pain
to me the way you organize classes.... i've only seen a few
tutorials, ones that explain how you cannot simply import a custom
class, you have tell your movie to link to it, put it in the same
directory, or manually name the package, it's sort of confusing.
my main point here is that i'm very eager to start building
apps in straight AS 3.0 instead of using flash cs3 (for some
projects), and it would be cool to get some help or be pointed in
the right direction.
to simplify:
can i write AS 3.0 and only as 3.0 in flex 2 or 3? how? can
you link me to a tutorial? any advise?

Hey William, thanks for the post. It's a great coincidence
because I'm reading that book as well. I'm about half way through
it, and I love it. I installed mxmlc on my linux box and am writing
pure AS 3 apps. I think that's the way to go, though I know it's
not for everybody.
My problem with mxml is that it has a weird syntax for
function calls, and it's not as 'intuitive' for a person like me,
who came from C++ and Java programming in the past. I like writing
programs in the C++ and Java style syntax, and since so many other
languages use a similar syntax, I don't see any reason to learn the
nuances of mxml, unless I was getting paid to do it. As far as I
can tell there is no benefit.
I hate using Flash to write flash apps as well, I feel like
they become messy and confusing, especially when trying to write an
OOP application. I only use it if I want to move an object in a
very specific way and can't do it with the Tween methods.

Simple Question - attribute alternative text within the same Word doc

ok. I am having a brain freeze and can't locate the answer in the OPA help. Simple question.
Is there a simple way to alias an attribute for use in Word?
For instance the following two conclusions create 2 attributes where I only want 1 attribute.
the annual percentage rate = 6
APR = the annual percentage rate
Is there a configuration option or something to alias APR as the annual percentage rate for use in Word? I want to use either in the same Word document. Something in my head tells me I saw that once before, but all of a sudden I have a brain freeze.
Sorry for such a simple question, but sometimes I get too deep in the weeds.

You may be thinking of the OPA legend style. In the Office 2007 OPM ribbon it's called Table Legend, but I believe it works with non-table rules in Word as well - it certainly used to.
It's an OPA rule style which can be used when you want to refer to a shorthand version of an attribute, e.g. "APR" instead of "the annual percentage rate". I believe it only applies to the rule immediately below where it has been set in the doc, and not the entire doc.
I did a quick search in the OPM Help and found references to the legend style, but I didn't find a description of the functionality (I didn't search too thoroughly though).
Here basically how it works...
Above the rule write the shorthand version, then the word "is", then the full attribute text, e.g.
APR is the annual percentage rateSide note: I always bold the "is" in the legend line. This is not required, but I like to do it because it makes it clearer at a glance which part is the shorthand and which part is the full attribute text.
Then apply the Table Legend style to the line, then put your Word table or regular rule below it, e.g.
[legend]APR is the annual percentage rate
the result = APR * 10 I use this functionality occasionally. Usually it's when I've got calculations in Word tables and I'm trying to make the left hand column more readable, e.g. using something "APR" in the formula so that it doesn't take up so much space.

First of all, much help for Thunderbird refers to menus which may not be visible. It would help you and us if you have your menus and toolbars visible.

I'm still not sure if you are looking to change the PrPro GUI (the display of the interface), or some aspect within your Project. If the "background" is what is seen in your Program Monitor, then creating a Color Matte on Video Track 1 will likely be the answer. You can choose the color that you desire and anything on the upper Video Tracks, that do not occupy the full Frame Size will have that Color Matte as the "background."
For the GUI, Harm has addressed that, but I do not think that is what you are asking for.

PS an attached (use the little "camera" icon in the middle of the editing screen's Toolbar) screen-cap of your Timeline and your Program Monitor might clear things up a bit, in case you have not found the answer already. Just add some text to it in PS along the lines of "this is what I have now, but want to change it to a blue color... "

WD Abap - simple question (required field)

hi folks,
quite a simple question i guess.
i have a field marked as required (gets a red asteriks). In the actions i have "Standard" so they should have to do all the validations, but i still can execute the action, i did not find a docu for the behaviour of the "required" features? i thought like in r/3 sapgui appl. a default error messages will be shown?
any ideas?

I guess there is no difference between WD ABAP and WD Java in this regard, so I will answer from WD Java developer point:
"Required" actually means visual hint to user that input is mandatory. What "mandatory" actually means is application-specific.
For example, in Java string could be either null, or empty, or contains only spaces, or rest. What is mandatory here? Not null? Not empty? Something besides spaces? Ok, even worth, let us assume that we are entering some number (material, order). So string with only zeroes is also "empty".
Hence WD does not handle "required" flag itself, this is left for application developer.
Certainly, some data type constraints like minimal text length, or minimal numeric value may be treated as "required", and here WD works well.

I apologize in advance for what I'm sure is a simple question!.
I'm not familiar with C# at all and am pretty new to ASP.NET, therefore I'm keeping the level of customization to a minimum during phase 1 of our website. However, I would like to add a remember me checkbox to the loginblock.ascx. I have followed the normal asp rules for adding this checkbox to the layouttemplate but it makes no difference to whether a user is remembered. Looking at the code it would seem that the remember me value is always passed as false:

It doesnt, the control no longer loads. I have manually changed the value to true, and it triggers the process that automatically logs a user on at the next visit.

Simple centering of text on page?

I am new at using Buzzword, and am trying to center individual lines on a page of a new document I am typing. How do I do this? I see that on this screen for the creation of a new discussion topic on the forum, a quick and easy icon to click onto that centers text, but nowhere on my Buzzword document screen do I see such a icon, or reference to a drop-down file to "center."

Thanks for your post. The center text option is somewhat hidden - it's on the Paragraph toolbar (not the default Font toolbar). To select the Paragraph toolbar, choose the small orange paragraph symbol on the far right of the screen. It will open and slide over to the left, then you will see the text - alignment options.

Question concerning text

Okay, this is a very simple question if I remember correctly. I used to know how to do this, but I've forgotten and I can't for the life of me seem to figure it out again.
My question is: how do you make it so your text is transparent and you can see an image coming through it? I may not be explaining it very well, but basically I want to have text on a black background and you can see through the text to another image or video moving behind it.
Keep in mind, I do not want to use Livetype or any other program to do this. I'd like to keep it in FCP and I know it's possible because I've done it before.

Think of it this way...
Painting STOP on the street --
V1 - Your street level video you want as background
V2 - Your stencil -- white text you want 'paint' to come thru
V3 - Your paint level - what you want to show as the text
Change V2 to travel matte luma (I think)
Maybe V3... That's the part I get confused on.

09 is current month
and 9800001 is the code i would submit(list box) from a form
so what i need is a program that can generate the above path and open that particular PDF file

A simple question on random number generation?

This is a rather simple question and shows my newbieness quite blatantly!
I'm trying to generate a random number in a part of a test I have.
So, I have a little method which looks like this:
public int getRandomNumber(int number){
        Random random = new Random(number);
        return random.nextInt(number);
    }And in my code I do int random = getRandomNumber(blah)...where blah is always the same number.
My problem is it always returns the same number. What am I missing here. I was under the impression that nextint(int n) was supposed to generate the number randomly!! Obviously I'm doing something wrong or not using the correct thing. Someone please point out my stupidity and point me in the right direction? Ta

I think the idea is that Random will generate the same pseudo-random sequence over and over if you don't supply a seed value. (The better to debug with, my dear.) When you're ready to put an app into production, the seed value should be the current system time in milliseconds to guarantee a new sequence with each run.
Do indeed move Random outside the loop. Think of it like a number factory - instantiate it once and let it pump out the random values for you as needed.
