Site Resiliency with 3 Mailbox Servers

I'm working on an Exchange 2013 implementation and am trying to figure out the best way to have resiliency for my databases where I could lose a data center and still be online with no manual intervention.
Primary Data Center
MBX01 Server - half databases active / half databases passive
MBX03 Server - lagged copy
CAS01 Server (behind hardware load balancer located at primary data center with a hardware load balancer mate that comes up at secondary if primary load balancer is lost)
Secondary Data Center
MBX02 Server - other half databases active / other half databases passive
CAS02 Server (behind hardware load balancer located at primary data center with a hardware load balancer mate that comes up at secondary if primary load balancer is lost)
DAG01 - contains MBX01, MBX02, MBX03
CAS Resiliency - I think I'm covered here.  If I lose an entire site, the load balancer at the other site comes up and will only route traffic to whatever CAS server that is online (in this case, only the CAS in the same data center).  My EX services
all route to a DNS name which points to a VIP on the hardware load balancer.
Mailbox Resiliency - This I'm not as sure about.  As I understand it, with 3 DAG members, I will need 2 up for quorum.  If I lose the secondary site, I have 2 at the main site so will be fine.  However if I lose the primary site, I lose 2
nodes and would lose quorum.
How can I configure such that I can lose the primary site and still be online?  Do I resolve the quorum issue with a second DAG with a mailbox server at each site and then a file share witness in the secondary site?  Or is there another way to
resolve?

Hi ,
Yes , your understanding is correct.
Probably there are two kind of failures will happen to the nodes in DAG.On such case i will explain you how dynamic quorum kicks inn and recalculates the dynamic weight.
Types
of failure :
1.sequential failure on dag nodes - first node in dag will go down and after a short time second node will go down .
2.simultaneous failure on dag nodes - majority of the nodes will go down at a time .On your case majority is two.
Dynamic quorum will support sequential failure of nodes and it will not support the simultaneous failure .
Solution for you problem :
How can I configure such that I can lose the primary site and still be online?  Do I resolve the quorum
issue with a second DAG with a mailbox server at each site and then a file share witness in the secondary site?  Or is there another way to resolve?
In your case you need to deploy one more node in secondary datacenter and then you have to place the file
share witness in the third site to have the automatic failover during primary or secondary data center failure.
quorum calculation would be like below .
n/2+1
4/2+1 = 2+1=3
So at any cost you need to have the 3 votes to have a majority.

  • Exchange 2010 DAG's - 4 Mailbox Servers in 2 Datacenters with per site redundancy

I recently came into a company with an Exchange 2010 sp1 environment where there are two data centers in two different subnets (10.70.62.0 and 10.80.56.0)
Each datacenter has 2 mailbox servers (4 servers total) but their plan was to have only enough storage space to host 1/2 of the databases on each server. So instead of server 1, 2, and 3 being copies of each other, ServerA is a copy of ServerA and ServerB
    is a copy of ServerB
    Server     -            Databases
    Site1mbA - Primary Database copy 1-10
    Site1mbB - Primary Database copy 11-20
    Site2mbA - Secondary Database copy 1-10
    Site2mbB - Secondary Database copy 11-20
Normally if there were enough storage space I would keep a copy on each server and replicate within 1 DAG.
However since not all the databases are on each member server do I need to use 2 DAGS? 1st for Site1mbA & Site2mbA and 2nd for Site1mbB & Site2mbB
I feel I would need the 2 DAG's because with 1 DAG if Site1mbA server went offline the DAG couldn't switch to the Failover Cluster IP for Site2 because there are still active mailboxes in Site1 on Site1mbB.
Does that make any sense or am I over complicating it?
    Thanks!

There is no rule that every server in a DAG must have a copy of every Database. You could do this with one DAG, but if the WAN goes down then the DAG will be active in only a single site not both.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979781(v=exchg.141).aspx#FourTwo
As illustrated in the previous example, using a single four-member DAG extended across two datacenters can provide high availability and site resilience for the mailbox services and data. However, if a WAN outage occurs, only the primary datacenter retains
service because it contains the majority of the voters. The datacenter with the minority of voters loses majority, and the DAG members in that datacenter lose quorum and go offline.
To deploy highly available Mailbox servers in a multiple datacenter environment, where each datacenter is actively serving a local user population, we recommend that you deploy multiple DAGs, where each DAG has a majority of voters in a different datacenter,
as illustrated in the following figure.

  • VS Exp 2013: Unable to create the Web site ... The components for communicating with FTP servers are not installed.

I have MS Visual Studio Express 2013 It has worked fine for many months and then suddenly (I have made no configuration changes or added new programs) when I try to publish I am getting the message:
Unable to create the Web site 'ftp://ftp.xx.xx/xxx.org.uk/www/htdocs'. The components for communicating with FTP servers are not installed.
(I have replaced actual name with x's).
I had a similar problem some months ago and found that saving all files, closing VS 2013 and re-starting the program fixed the problem. This time it has not.
I am at a loss to know how to take this forwards. I do not use IIS.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Michael.

    Hi Michael,
For web site development, so you use the VS2013 express for web, am I right? We have to make sure that it is not the VS version issue.
As you said that it worked well before, did you install other add-ins or tools in your VS IDE like
    Xamarin or others?
Maybe you could disable or remove all add-ins in your VS IDE, test it again.
please also install the VS2013 update 4 in your side.

my iWeb image names are incompatible with FTP servers and must be renamed but I can't find the images in iWeb. I can upload to a desktop file and change them there but then I would need to download them to a new site in iWeb to publish them.
    What's the answer?
    Thanks

Many thanks to  responded to my question and sorry not to get back sooner.
Yes, I discovered by this unfortunate experience that the names of photos are a serious issue if the site is to ever go to an FTP server.  Apple should discuss this carefully in their "manual".
One more question:  I uploaded the website to a folder on my desktop. When I open it, unlike the photos in iWeb, there are folders for each page which have all the photos in them. I went through each folder and changed the names to be FTP compatible. I'm using iWeb SEO Tool which allows one to upload from this local folder to an FTP server but having trouble.
Is this because there is an imbedment in iWeb that uses the old photo names to link to the actual photos and it can't find them because of the name changes?
Thanks again for your help ...

  • Exchange 2010 CAS array with Exchange 2013 Mailbox Servers

    Here is our current scenario,
    Exchange 2007
    2 - Hub Transport Servers
2 - CAS servers (cluster NLB)
    2 - Mailbox servers (clustered)
    Exchange 2010
    2 - Huib Transport Servers
3 - CAS servers (array NLB)
    2 - Mailbox servers (1 DAG)
We have not migrated any users to the Exchange 2010 environment yet. We're thinking that at this point we would rather go from 2007 to 2013. Does the 2013 mailbox server work with a 2010 CAS array?

    Hi,
As far as I know, CAS array doesn' t exist in Exchange 2013. And OWA and other requests can be proxyed and redirected from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2010.

    Hi Mr.Cross,
If you want to allow anonymous relay, you need to create a new Receive connector on the Hub Transport server and use the Shell to grant the relay permission to anonymous connections.
Here’s an article for your reference:
Allow Anonymous Relay on a Receive Connector
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232021(v=exchg.141).aspx
    Notes:
Allowing anonymous relay on a Receive connector is a security risk, especially on Internet-facing servers.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to post back.

  • Planing site resiliency

    Hello,
We are planning to extend our Exchange 2010 from 1 DC to 2 DCs.
    Currently there is:
    - 1 CAS array with 2 CAS servers.
    - 1 DAG with 2 Mailbox servers.
We would like to have active mailbox databases on both DCs to spread the load and have site resiliency. I have read a lot about how to accomplish this and the recommended solution is always 2 DAGs with a witness on each site. However the only reason I can
see why this solution is recommended is because in case of WAN outage it provides access to Exchange for local users:
    - 2 CAS arrays with 2x2 CAS servers.
    - 2 DAGs with 2x2 Mailbox servers.
The thing is our users are not located at the DC, they are spread across the globe, so in case of a WAN outage, even if there are 2 DAGs, we still need to switchover databases to the other DC. So there is no benefit from having 2 DAGs, am I correct?
We have got a very good connectivity between DCs and can use a 3rd DC, so I keep thinking that 1 stretched DAG with active/active mailbox servers plus a witness in the 3rd DC would be much more simple plus we would get automatic failover of databases in
    case of WAN outage:
    - 2 CAS arrays with 2x2 CAS servers.
    - 1 DAG with 2x2 Mailbox servers.
Any reason why this is not recommended? Is there anything against having active/active DC model with 1 DAG? I cannot find this architecture anywhere.

Yes, you can do that. The reason its not typically recommended for Exch 2010 is because of the CAS Array NameSpaces issues. However if you have one client connection FQDN across the two DCs, then it works fine.
If not, if the one DC is down, then you have to do some DNS configuration changes so that clients can connect to the CAS array namespace in the second DC. i.e. the database may failover automatically, but if the clients are still trying to connect to a FQDN
that is not up, then you have a problem.

  • CAS Array and DAG Site Resiliency (2 Remote Sites via Point to Point Protocol)

Hi, we are planning to deploy Exchange HA and Site Resiliency but i had some troubles understanding some concepts.
    Out current configurations settings:
    Datacenter A:
    1 MB/CAS/HT (MB01)
    1 CAS (CAS01)
1 Point to Point link between Datacenter A and Datacenter B (We create a VLAN in the remote datacenter pointing to the Active Directory site where our Exchange server is).
1 Active Directory Site with 2 Domain controllers (with VLAN 192.1.3.x in Datacenter A and VLAN 192.1.20.x in Datacenter B)
    Datacenter B:
We want to install a new Exchange CAS Server (CAS02) in VLAN 192.1.20.x, is it posible to create a CAS Array with this configuration considering the replication network for the cluster in the MS Windows Server NLB, so that our Virtual IP of the cluster points
to 192.1.3.x VLAN? What are the network considerations to the replication and MAPI network between VLANs? Does we need some third party NLB or this could be achieved with MWS2008R2?
Same configuration for the DAG, with a new server (MB02) just for the MB role. The idea is to remove the CAS role from MB01 and have 2 Exchange Mailbox servers members of the DAG and 2 Exchange CAS Servers members of the CAS Array, so in case of a disaster
in Datacenter A our clients automatically failover to Datacenter B in this case all of our clients will be pointing to the CAS Array in their Outlook.
Hope you can help me with this, i don't know if this is possible with our actual infraestructure.
    Best Regards,
    Gerardo

    Thanks Ed,
So in that case we will need at least 4 servers in Datacenter A (2 MB members of DAG and 2 CAS/HUB members of the CAS Array) to get a decent HA solution, Am I correct?
What about the other server in Datacenter B for DR, it will be a passive node or just another multirole server. So in case of DR (Let's say our Datacenter A is totally wrecked) I will need to switchover manually with my DB backups and switchover the user
mailbox and outlook clients to point to the DR server? I didn´t get the point of the DR server in Datacenter B, can you explain a little bit more?
I'm totally agree with you about the false positive failovers because our network doesn't meet that requeriments at all.
Hope you can help me to clear my mind.
    Best Regards,
    Gerardo

  • Error While Attempting to Uninstall Exchange 2013 Mailbox Servers

    Hi everyone,
We recently migrated all of our users from Site A to Site B. Now, I'm trying to remove the Exchange mailbox servers that were in Site A, since we're going to be decommissioning the site. All of these mailbox servers have been removed from the cross-site
DAG, and all other services have been moved over to Site B as well (mail flow, CAS, etc). However, when I try and uninstall Exchange from any of the seven mailbox servers (I've tried it on two so far, with the same result), I get the following error at Step
    7 of 11:
    Error:
    The following error was generated when "$error.Clear();
              & $RoleBinPath\ServiceControl.ps1 DisableServices $RoleRoles.Replace('Role','').Split(',');
              & $RoleBinPath\ServiceControl.ps1 Stop $RoleRoles.Replace('Role','').Split(',')
" was run: "Service 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store (MSExchangeIS)' cannot be configured due to the following error: The specified service has been marked for deletion".
If I exit the Uninstall sessions, and then reboot in order to try again, it just states "An incomplete installation was detected. Run setup to complete Exchange installation." It appears that all Exchange files are still on the server too, however,
the server in question is no longer listed in the EAC under the "Servers" section.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
According to this error, this issue may be caused by legacy PF database replicas and legacy Mailbox
store pointing to the PF database. Please try to delete the legacy PF database container from ADSIedit.msc, the run setup and reboot the server to solve this issue.
The path in ADSIedit should be like this:
    CN=Mailbox Database ,CN=Databases,CN=Exchange Administrative Group ,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Your company name, CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=Your company name,DC=com

  • I want more than one site, all with personal domain names

I have a dot mac account and I created a personal website using iweb (www.personalname.com) and now I would like to make a site for my business using iweb (www.businessname.com). Is that even possible? I've followed directions from other people. i know that I need to go into iweb and under file click new site and choose the templates and so on. But once I do all of that, I click publish and a box comes up and says this new site will now be published under your www.personalname.com.
Am I missing something, or do I have to buy a completely new dot mac account for my business? Someone please help and walk me through this.
    Thanks a bunch!

As Wyodor suggested have your domain name provider activate domain name forwarding for the second site. You'll need to open that site in your browser and get the actual URL to give the provider for forwarding.
To make it easier to edit and publish individual sites I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
If you expect a lot of traffic to your business site you might want to consider having it hosted on a commercial hosting site that will not be bogged down with all of the bells and whistles that the MobileMe servers are in order to provide all of the special features. A commercial server will be faster and more reliable. Depending on where you purchase your business domain name you can host it on their servers.

I'm using a Mac. After swithcing to ICloud will I be able to use IWeb to upload and publish my sites hosted by other servers like Prohosting ?

iWeb has two other ways to publish your site...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
... and the second method allows you a choice of how you upload the files...

    Here's a publishing workflow checklist...

The MobileMe only features can be replaced by alternatives...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Comments-Password-Protect.html
If you have folders of assets outside of the main website folder on MobileMe, download them from the Apple server. From the Finder Go menu, follow the path iDisk/My iDisk/ to get there. Your website files are in the Web/Sites folder. Drag any files/folders onto the desktop.
Use an FTP application to upload these assets to the root folder on your new server...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Upload.html
...and change the relevant URLs to...
    http://www.domain-name.com/Folder-Name/file-name.file-extension
There are lots of options for hosting for about half the cost of MobileMe...

If you have been using a web.me.com domain name, you need to register a new one. Most hosting services give you at least one free and registering with your hosting company will make forwarding and managing it a lot easier.
Make sure you add the new name to Google and create, upload and enter a new sitemap.xml...

  • Site Resiliency Network Setup

I'm currently planning a coexistence upgrade from Exchange 2007 to 2013. Currently for DR we replicate our Exchange VM to our colo nightly. I would like to improve our DR strategy by using a DAG and site resiliency, however I'm not quite understanding how
to fail clients over to the DR site if the primary site fails. From what I understand, I must point the clients to a load balancer and then the LB will select the appropriate CAS member.
Is there a way to set this up without using a LB?
The main thing I'm trying to protect against is a WAN link outage in the primary site.

    Hi ,
As per my knowledge i have furnished the below points .
Is there a way to set this up without using a LB?
You can use the windows dns round robin or windows NLB to achieve you scenario. But as per Microsoft suggestion dns round robin and windows NLB is not advisable
Both Windows round robin and WNLB is not reliable and with the help of that we cannot able to split the traffic equally .
WNLB does not have the capability to provide exchange services level fault tolerance .
Windows dns round robin doesn't have the capability to make the exchange clients to get understand about the server status (i.e up or down)
It will simply the resolves the client query and then it provides the ip addresses to the client (i.e it will not consider whether that would be the ip address of
the server is up or down )
But the best practice is to use the software load balancer or hardware load balancer.
Please reply me if you have any queries .

  • Lync enterprise edition with 2 servers

    Hi
I know Microsoft doesn't "recommend" enterprise edition with 2 servers but they put some guidelines if you are doing so, so I am doing the same
once I restart one server , the other server front-end service is started but the users are not able to sign in !! and in the snooper I am getting unauthorized 101 SIP , once the server finished restarting then the service stuck on starting state , until
I run the command to reset the quorum
the point that this happens every-time not if both servers are down or something , so like the other server is not used at all !
I am running the January 2014 update of Lync server
so any suggestion plz , it is something related to the fabric and routing group , but as per microsoft you should face no issue if you have two servers with the guidelines, but it doesn't
    Thanks

If both servers are taken / went offline at the same time, there is a good chance that when they come back on, they might get the incorrect node id when you only have two Front End Servers.
Then you need to reset the quorum.
But with 3 Front End Server, you don’t have the problem.
Check the following blog for details:

    Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display
Let me know if this helps at all!

  • Create a site collection with dedicated content db with the help of server object model

    Hi,
I have a requirement to implement a create a new site collection with dedicated content db. i have got 2 PowerShell scripts which does the same. first i will  create a content  db and then create the sitecollection with contentdb
parameter with the created contentdb name.
Now the site collection created must contain few doc libs and few splists with look up columns, people picker data type, multiline of text, single line of text, choice field. hence i am thinking the below approach:
     1) create a web template and include sp doclibs, splists , site columns in this.
     2) i am thinking of a ui design to create the below:
These are called "projects" which is actually the site collection with the doclibs, splists and must be created by sharepoint admin on click of a link in my landing page.end users access these "projects"  aka
"site collections" and uploads the documents into these projects and collaborate.
so my question is :  On click of a button can I create a site collection with a dedicated content db based on the web template created with the  hel of  server  object model?
The other approach is on click of this button call the power shell script which accepts the sitecollection name and contentdb name as parameter. is this possible in  server obj.model ?
passing a paramter from code behind- visual web part ui to power shell ?
and it should create the site collec based on the web template and create the content db.
my doubt #3 : will it not throw error "request timed out" when creating the site collec and contentdb from ui ?

PowerShell is just a wrapper for the object model. You shouldn't need to reference PowerShell in your feature, just create the new site collection with C# inside your feature. There's a blog post here that illustrates some code that may get you started.

    $snapin = Get-PSSnapin | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Powershell'}
    if ($snapin -eq $null)
    Write-Host "Loading SharePoint Powershell Snapin"
    Add-PSSnapin "Microsoft.SharePoint.Powershell"
    $webapp=Get-SPWebApplication $WebApplicationUrl
    $newProxyLibrary = New-Object "Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPClientCallableProxyLibrary"
    $newProxyLibrary.AssemblyName = "Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.Dedicated.TenantAdmin.ServerStub, Version=15.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c"
    $newProxyLibrary.SupportAppAuthentication = $true
    $webapp.ClientCallableSettings.ProxyLibraries.Add($newProxyLibrary)
    $webapp.Update()
Write-Host "Successfully added TenantAdmin ServerStub to ClientCallableProxyLibrary."
    # Reset the memory of the web application
    Write-Host "IISReset..."
    Restart-Service W3SVC,WAS -force
    Write-Host "IISReset complete."
