Skip a column when importing a text file into Excel 2010

Hi,
I have a formatted Excel 2010 spreadsheet that I want to import data from a .txt file located on my local drive. The third column of the spreadsheet is a concantenate formula that converts the second column from a Hex formatted value to a Dec formatted value.
I want the first two columns of the text file to import into the first two columns of the spreadsheet and skip the third column then import the remaining columns from the text file to the spreadsheet. Is there an easy way to do this or do I need a VBA code
and if so can you provide that to me?
Thank you,
Jennifer

Hi Tony,
I am sorry if I didn't express my issue more clearly. Where I need to skip a column is in the Excel spreadsheet. I want to import all the columns from the text file. I want the first two columns from the text to import to the first two columns in the Excel
sheet A and B, skip the third column C in the spreadsheet, where I have a formula to convert the second column B values from a Hex format (imported data) to a Dec format, then continue to import columns 3, 4, and 5 from the text to spreadsheet columns D, E,
and F. I would think the function would be in the Excel spreadsheet maybe some type of protection setting or something similar, if it can even be done.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this.
Jennifer

  • Import text files into excel spreadsheet using automator

    Hello,
    I am trying to import a number of different text files into a single spreadsheet.  The content of each of the text files is the same (i.e. Same number of columns to be made) and each item is spac delimited.  I am trying to make it so that each of these text files will be entered into a single spreadsheet.  That is, one text file corresponds to one row of data and the second text file would correspond to the second row of data in the excel sheet.  Any ideas on how to do this?  I imagine this will require some sort of applescript but I'm not familiar with applescript at all!
    Thanks for your help!

    By the way, if anybody else has the same question I had:
    After trying this on my own, I recommend against doing what I did. I used the Excel macro language, Visual Basic for Applications. There are documented features in the Mac version that simply do nothing. I wasted a lot of time trying to find out why they wouldn't work. In other words, the online help told me they worked, but they didn't. I ended up with a combination of Automator and VBA and had to write my own code in VBA to duplicate the functionality that was supposed to be there.
    Also, it's my understanding that VBA on the Mac is a dead language and that Microsoft is concentrating on Excel's Applescript support, which appears to contain most (or all) of the functionality of VBA.
    I hope this helps someone else avoid making the same mistake I did!

  • Importing a text file into a variable

    I have a text file that I would like to import as a variable in javascript. I would like to do some editing to the text in the script before I place it into the page. I have the script splitting text into an array and the different parts need to go to different places... I have everything working for me except for importing the text from a file into a variable (right now I'm defining the variable from within the script).
    Any help would be appreciated!
    -Shane

    In Javascript you could use this:
    var f = File ('/d/books/mytextfile.txt');
    if (f.exists)
    f.open ('r', undefined, undefined);
    var textfile_contents = f.read();
    f.close ();

  • Video is not scaling properly when importing a flv file into dreamweaver

    Hi I have recently imported a flv video into dreamweaver and i have specified the width and height (including skin size)  but i keep getting white margins at the bottom or the top of the video.  It has nothing to do with the css because ive checked and when i change the size of the video in the html file it worked for some browers - google chrome, firefox but still had the white border on internet explorer.  I dont understand why different browers are rendering a video width and height different and whats causing the white borders to be there in the first place.  Can anyone help me with this?
    I have spent two weeks trying to sort this out after failing to add a clickable thumbnail to play the video as the video image on the site is black which doesnt look very good.  Is there any way that i can choose the thumbnail that flash player decides to feature for the video?  I know you can do this with youtube videos.
    website in question - www.juanajimenezflamenco.co.uk/videos.html

    I just don't see any white border on the right hand videos... if the problem continues, post a screen shot of what you are seeing. Also, 250 x 199 is not a 4:3 aspect ratio... 250/4 = 62.5, 62.5x3= 187.5.... so you are off by 11 pixels or so. Correct height for a 250 wide video shot at 4:3 aspect ratio, is 188px.
    Now on the left hand YouTube videos, the controls are under the video, not over the top of the video as the right hand videos are... so the height of the <object>.... not the video itself... the <object> needs to be tall enough to hold the video and the controls (video height + controls height).
    And since you are working in standard 4:3 aspect ratio video, you need to be careful to select the correct pixel shape, square or rectangle when starting any video project. Your video editing program, Premiere Elements should allow you to select between square pixels (used in computer monitors) or rectangle pixels (used in TVs). Selecting the wrong shaped pixel at the very start of the video capture process can mean distorted video once you render the project.
    Because TV pixels are rectangle, slightly taller than they are wide... it doesn't take as many rectangle TV pixels to equal the same height as square computor monitor pixels. For example, when you start a video project to output to DVD (TV viewing) you would choose rectangle pixels, so a 720 x 480 video dimensions would give you the correct 4:3 aspect ratio.... for TV.... but 720 x 480 is NOT a 4:3 aspect ratio mathmatically ... 720/4=180, 180x3=540 !! So for computer monitor viewing you would select square pixels at the very start of your video capture process and capture the video at 720x540, giving you the correct video aspect ratio for viewing on monitors.
    So besides setting the correct aspect ratio for the video in the <object> be sure that you started with the correct pixel shape.
    This might also give you some help... or just Google "square vs rectangle pixels" for more info:

  • When importing a Quicktime file into iMovie the audio is inconsistently synchronised with the video. Any ideas?

    I record using Quicktime and the built in webcam on my MacBook Pro. When importing the file to iMovie the audio is inconsistent in its syncronisation with the video. Any ideas?

    This is probably caused by the internal webcam on Apple devices being optimized for FaceTime rather than for movie making. In FaceTime, the goal is to transmit the information using a little bandwidth as possible, so the video will be recorded at a variable frame rate. The frame rate will get low if you are still, and will speed up if there is a lot of motion.
    To fix, I would suggest that you use a free app like MPEG Streamclip. Drag the clip into MPEG Streamclip and export it out at a constant framerate.
    If it is an HD movie, I suggest exporting it from MPEG Streamclip using FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video compression. For sound, choose uncompressed 48khz. That should work, but I can't test it right now. If MPEG Streamclip does not work for you, let me know and I can recommend another free tool.

  • Automatic Import of TDMS file into Excel

    I was looking at the NI TDMS import plugin for Excel and it seems that the newest version of the plugin uses the COM API which could allow the import function to be used automatcially. There is a short info page about this here http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/10207 but I'm new to Excel Macros and VBA so I'm not sure how to go from this tutorial to what I am wanting to do.
    Specifically, I am wondering if anyone knows (and could post an example of) how to do the following:
    From within a labview VI, the user would select a path to a tdms file. Once this path is selected, the VI would call the TDMS import excel plugin and run it on the file.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    After playing with things, I have worked out the solution to this and I am posting it for everyone in case it can be of some use. In order to use this solution to work out of the box, you will need the report generation toolkit. If you don't have that, you would need some other way of launching Excel from labview and running a macro. Hopefully someone who has the knowledge on how to do that will post that portion in this thread for those who don't have the toolkit
    To start out, open excel and in the menubar select Tools -> Macros -> Visual Basic Editor. The source for the macro you will create is:
    Sub TDMImport(fileName)
    'Get TDM Excel Add-In
    Dim obj As COMAddIn
    Set obj = Application.COMAddIns.Item("ExcelTDM.TDMAddin")
    obj.Connect = True
    'Confirm only importing "Description" properties for Root
    Call obj.Object.Config.RootProperties.SelectAll
    'Show the group count as property
    Call obj.Object.Config.RootProperties.Select("Groups")
    'Select all the available properties for Group
    Call obj.Object.Config.GroupProperties.SelectAll
    'Import custom properties
    obj.Object.Config.RootProperties.SelectCustomProperties = True
    obj.Object.Config.GroupProperties.SelectCustomProperties = True
    obj.Object.Config.ChannelProperties.SelectCustomProperties = True
    'Import the selected file
    Call obj.Object.ImportFile(fileName, False)
    'Record down the current workbook
    Dim Workbook As Object
    Set Workbook = ActiveWorkbook
    End Sub
    Once you have copied/pasted this into the editor go to the menubar and hit File -> Export File and save the macro as a .BAS file
    You will also need to go to Tools -> Macros-> Security and select the Trust Visual Basic Project option in order for the macro to be called from LV.
    Once all this is done, you can use the attached VI (Saved in LV 8.6) Simply supply the path to the BAS file and the TDMS file via the front panel controls and click run and the TDMS import will happen automatically.

  • , Trouble importing from text file into PDF Acrobat 9.0

    Hey all!
    I'm trying to use the JavaScript found on this Adobe page to insert text into my PDF:
    http://help.adobe.com/livedocs/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/h tml/wwhelp.htm?context=Acrobat9_HTMLHelp&file=JS_API_AcroJS.88.502.html
    this.importTextData("/c/data/myData.txt", 0);
    Replacing the path with my own path, of course.  However, I can't get it to work at all, it just crashes my JavaScript.  I was thinking it might have something to do with the privilege stuff which, admittedly, confuses me a bit.  But my understanding is that if you use the function without arguments, that shouldn't matter, and it will prompt the user for a path?
    this.importTextData();
    However, that still crashes the JavaScript.  I'm not sure what exactly I am doing wrong here?
    NOTE: I have tried running the JavaScript both in a checkbox and on page load.

    Well I was having trouble getting it to work without a path, though that kind of mysteriously started working now despite the fact that I didn't really change anything.  I also assumed that part didn't apply to me because we are on 9, not 8, but maybe it means 8 and on?
    I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my mind around privileged and non-privileged contexts.
    These methods can be executed only in a privileged context, which includes console, batch and application initialization events.
    What would be the simplest way to execute in a privileged context?  "Application initialization" sounds promising, does this mean when the application is first opened?  If so, how would you execute JavaScript this way?!

  • No sound when importing AVCHD MTS files into premiere cs5.5

    Hello
    I have footage that was shot with the sony nx sf-100 and it is ACVHD mts files.
    when I import the files to the bin, it is being imported without sound (no sound track at all when dragged into the timeline).
    The footage has sound - that has been confirmed.
    I am working in an AVCHD sequence and I'm importing the files using the media browser.
    There are many refrences to this problem online - but all give the solution of recompresing the videos in a new format, although every documentaion cliams that premiere is supposed to take AVCHD natively including sound.
    Does anyone have a solution for this?
    Thanks,
    Oded

    My apologies. I beleive I mixed up my versions for support. 5.5.x should support PCM audio. Thank you, Jeff.
    I have confirmed that I am indeed getting audio with files from a Sony NEX FS-100 camera, with CS5.5.2 on my systems. Oded, would it be possible to send me a sample file that exhibits this issue for you?
    Things to try are deleting your Media cache (Preferences > Media > Media Cache Database, click Clean button). Make certain that your copy of Premiere Pro is activated: check under Help menu you should see "Deactivate..." noted.
    Thank you.

  • No audio when importing .M2TS video file into PP

    Hello hopefully someone can give some insite to why I'm having this problem. I'm using the Hauppauge HD PVR to capture HD footage from my DVR
    and I'm getting mixed results when I import into PP. The video is fine and sometimes the audio works and other times it doesn't, I let PP comform the file before I try editing it. The captures are @1920 x 1080 in 5.1 audio, if I capture with just 2 channel audio I have no problem and everything is fine but capturing 2 channel audio kinda defeats the purpose of doing highdef to Bluray. When I view the same file that doesn't have audio in PP with a player everything plays and sounds fine, so I know the capturing process is fine. Any suggestions would appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum.
    First, what version of PrPro are you using?
    In earlier versions, pre-CS4.1, you need to copy the AC3 .dll from Encore to PrPro, to use AC3 Audio. In CS4.1 - CS 4.2, that is no longer necessary.
    Now a note on Exporting DD 5.1 SS. You will need the Minnetonka SurCode DD 5.1 SS plug-in. You get 3 trials of it, then must purchase it to Export as DD 5.1 SS. If you go this route, purchase from within PrPro, as you will get an Adobe-user discount of ~ US$50. If you buy from the Minnetonka Audio site, you'll pay full price.
    Also note that Hauppage might not create 100% DVD/BD compliant DD 5.1 SS. That could be an issue too.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Import external text file into table in database using web form

    I whant to import data from text delimited file located in os
    into oracle table using web form.
    I am using ORACLE DATABASE 8i, APPLICATION SERVER 9i

    Is there anybody who know how can i do this?

    WebUtil uploads the files as Binary - so yes you could have some issues if you have a Unix host - however, that would only mean that there is an extra character to trim off of the end of the line read by Text_io.

  • Problem when importing a SQL file into Forms

    Hello friends at www.oracle.com ,
    I have a Forms program which has to open a SQL external file, read each SQL instruction into a variable, execute it and read the next one, as in the example (for illustration purposes) below.
    create table ...
    insert into log_table ...
    delete from table ...
    So, whenever Forms finds the slash, it will execute the instruction via FORMS_DDL built-in.
    The problem is that we have a SQL instruction that can't be executed via Forms. The reasons:
    - It is a SQL that creates a package body
    - The SQL that creates the package code is very big (more than 32 kb), and this leads to the problem below
    - The 32 kb SQL code is sent to a Forms variable, and a FORMS_DDL should execute it, but FORMS_DDL has a limitation: the maximum that FORMS_DDL can read is 32 kb
    - I can't find a way for me to break the package code into two or more codes because I cannot alter a package to add procedures or functions
    Could you please tell me what should I do? If the text above is not clear, please ask me more details.
    Best regards,

    Hello Francois,
    Why don't you run your SQL file with Sql*Plus ?sincere thanks for your answer.
    Your idea would be the ideal solution, but the package needs to be created via Forms only, for maintenance purposes. A Forms program needs to handle everything that comes from this SQL external file.
    Another way could be creating the package inside Forms, but the idea is to send all SQL instructions to an external file, for the same reason as above (that is, maintenance).
    Best regards,

  • Importing several CSV files into Excel

    Hello Everyone,
    I managed to piece together this code which runs several powershell scripts that each output a CSV for every day of the week.
    Next, I located a function that takes a CSV file as input and exports that as a worksheet in an Excel document.
    My problem is, the last column in the Excel file should be the first column and I just cannot spot why this behavior is occuring.
    #First phase, output CSV files used later in the script.

    That is interesting considering this script I found on Hey Scripting Guy.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2010/09/09/copy-csv-columns-to-an-excel-spreadsheet-by-using-powershell.aspx
    I have run your version above and have no issues with order.
    I still recommend using WorkBook.OpenText($csvfile)
    and
    $wb.Sheets($csvfile).Move($wb2.Sheet(1))
    This is much faster and takes much less code.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    Could you give a terse example?  I'm trying to put something together but am not having much success.
    $sheets = @(LS D:\Scripts\work | select FullName -ExpandProperty FullName)
    $Excel = New-Object -ComObject excel.application

    $workbook.Sheets($sheets[$i]).Move($file.Sheet(1))

  • Removing useless contents of an unsorted text file in excel 2013

    hi friends
    i am new to excel & there is an urgent need for me, that's why i pose this question which may appear simple.
    in my server i have redirected the output of a command help into a text file (c:\myhelp.txt)
    i have pasted some initial lines of that text file here:
    The following is a list of unattend parameters for promotion (default values are enclosed in <>):
    /AllowDomainControllerReinstall:{Yes | <No> | NoAndNoPromptEither}
    Specifies whether to continue installing this domain controller despite that a domain controller account with the same name is detected. Specify Yes only if you are sure that the account is no longer in use.
    /AllowDomainReinstall:{Yes | <No> | NoAndNoPromptEither}
    Specifies whether an existing domain is recreated.
    /ApplicationPartitionsToReplicate:""
    Specifies application partitions to be replicated in the format of "partition1" "partition2". If * is specified, all application partitions will be replicated.
    now i need to import this text file into excel 2013 so that i be able to remove comments & descriptions ( in fact anything except command switches, which their characteristics is that they begin with an
    slash & there is no space between their words).
    in other words i need to preserver strings which start with an slash.
    for example i need only the following strings remain in the file:
    /AllowDomainControllerReinstall:
    /AllowDomainReinstall:
    /ApplicationPartitionsToReplicate:
    so that then i be able to export that file & then execute my command & specify the path to this answer file (c:\myhelp.txt)
    how can i achieve this in excel?
    can i easily do the entire process when importing that file into excel, using importing options? if not, how can i do that after opened in excel?
    in the following screenshots i have shown what import options i used when importing this help file into excel & the result:
    really thanks in advanced, i really need this help.

    Hi John,
    Bit unclear on your requirment.
    Let me put it this way.
    1.You are running some command which generates output c:\myhelp.txt in multiple lines.
    2. You want to reformat the contents of c:\myhelp.txt so that only parameter name remains in each line, without the values.
    3. Reuse the updated c:\myhelp-clean.txt file into some other script\command.
    I can help you with quick excel formatting on point 2.
    Points noted:- the parameter are seperated from the rest of the data by ":" colon
    Hence once data is opened in excel, use Text-Col ->Delimited->Other-> Type : (colon) as the delimitor.
    This will result in only the 1st column with the long text in some rows and /parameters seperated
    Then Select all the data in the first column, Filter->Drop Down, Text Filters->Begins with-> /
    Only text with the parameters remain, as desc rows don't have / in beginning.
    Copy this and save it in another text file for re-use.

  • Error importing text file into SQL Server when last column is null

    Hello all. Happy holidays!
    I'm trying to import a text file into a SQL Server table, and I get the error below when it gets to a row (row 264) that has null in the last column. I'm guessing the null jumbles up the delimiters somehow. The nulls are not errors, and I need to import
    them into the table with the rest of the rows. Any idea how I can do that?

    WeeLass

    Hi WeeLass,
    The error that” Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "XYZ" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".” is generally error message, and the error indicates
    that there is data type mismatch issue between the input columns and the output columns.
    Based on your description, the issue is that you trying to convert a column contains empty value from string to integer data type for the output column "XYZ" in Flat File Source [1]. Please note that we cannot type an empty value as integer data
    type column value, so the error occurs.
    To fix this issue, just as you did, we should convert the data type for the output column "XYZ" in Flat File Source [1] back to DT_WSTR or DT_STR, then use a derived column task to replace the current column (UBPKE542). But the expression should
    be like below:
    LEN(TRIM(UBPKE542)) > 0 ? (DT_I8)UBPKE542 : NULL(DT_I8)
    In this way, the data type of the column in SQL table would be int, and the empty value would be replaced with NULL.
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.
    Thanks,
