Well, to warn you, we are dyed in the wool Slackware enthusiasts
for our servers, but it was a 2 week battle to get the glibc
upgrade and then the oracle installed. Got it done, and I should
have documented all the requirements, but I didn't..
Save yourself some grief for now, slap up a second machine to
just handle the server, and drop in a Redhat distro.. (Make sure
to button it up)
To be warned, you can't just install the glibc libraries
haphazardly, some of the paths are hardcoded into the oracle
distro.. and make sure you have the tk files required..
Suggest some of the exellent mailing lists that are popping up,
with oracle on linux. There you might get more help on
installation using Slackware. My next try is to see if I can get
one running on the new 4.0 Slackware

    Hello!
    I also tried to install Oracle 8.1.6.1 (after giving up the 8.0.5 installation due to segmentation faults all over..), it also failed.
    After trying to install Oracle 8.1.6.1 on RedHat 7.0 and it still crashed, i sent a mail to some guru that wrote the oracle-how-to document for redhat, here is what he replied.
    My guess is that this also applies to the newest slackware version, because i presume that slackware 7.0 also use the newest glibc libraries;
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Oracle 8.1.6 does not work under Red Hat >Linux 7. Yes, that's the problem

    The best advice I can give at this point is >to install and run Oracle on

    ChrisI then installed Orace on RedHat 6.1 and it worked like a dream.
    Maybe you guys should try your luck on an earier version of slackware?

  • Oracle 816 on linux slackware 7.0

    hi,
    i have a problem while installing 816 on linux slackware 7.0. i have followed all the install instructions... but every time that it gets to the "Oracle Database Configuration Assistant" it just hangs. why would it do this??
    when i terminate the installation and restart it, the installed products show the database as installed. i have not actually tested this (i want to use php on apache to integrate with the dbase) but it shows that the dbase is installed. i wish to do a complete 100% install without any hassles. can anyone give me some advice on how to get past the problem i am experiencing.

    I've made the links as speicified but it still didn't work ! It displayed Java exception errors and then hanged up when the database was being created. May someone really tried it out himself/herself before posting any so-called "solution" !

    as we could not find support of red hat in ksa, and red hat become more commerical flavor and asking us 2500$ for support by email, phone fax etc...no physcial person available
    can you refer me what alternate it can be...
    does red hat ver 4(RHAS 4) worked more better than any other linux flavors?
    can any one advised me if i used slackware 10 or suse...how this will be impract as compare to red hat...anyurl any suggestions apprecited in advanced GURUS
    thanks and kind regards,
    salim shahzad

    You can install Oracle software on non redhat or suse platforms (i think with 10g CentOS is supported too), but with for a production platform you would like support to be able to help you...
    Personally I always use CentOS for development systems...

  • Oracle 9.2.0.1 + Slackware 8.1 = ***SUCCESS***

    Oracle 9.2.0.1 is working well on Slackware Linux 8.1

    Congratulaions! I've been running 9.0.1.0 for a year on Slackware 8.0, but I'm having a problem installing 9.2.0.1 on the same two platforms. OUI quits spontaneously while "Loading Java Runtime environment..." after selecting products to install, without a message in the install .log, .err, or .out files.
    Just wondering if you had the same problem and if moving to 8.1 was your solution. The 8.1 CD's should be arriving any day now...

  • Linux oracle 9i on slackware 8.0 - SOLUTION

    Once again, but this is a summary.
    I have successfuly install and run Oracle 9i database on Slackware 8.0.
    My system:
    - hardware
    - enough memory (together with swap file)
    - based on Slackware 8.0
    - glibc 2.2.3 from slack 8
    - glocale from slack 8
    - other things from slack 8
    - kernel 2.4.8 (but it should work with any 2.4 kernel)
    - binutils (read below)
    - JDK 1.3.1 from http://java.sun.com/
    there is problem with jdk 1.3.1 and glibc-2.2.x libraries
    described here (but I have no problems wiht oracle and it):
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/install-linux-sdk.html#problems
    Problems:
    1. can't run installer [runInstaller] (segmentation fault)
    2. root.sh can't find /bin/sed and /bin/awt
    3. linking problems
    Solutions:
    1. install glocale.tgz (from slack 8)
    2. create symlinks:
    /bin/sed -> /usr/bin/sed
    /bin/awt -> /usr/bin/awt
    3. downgrade binutils from slackware binutils-2.11 to 2.10 binutils
    I have installed and I'm using binutils from RedHat 7.0 from:
    ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.0/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
    installed with command:
    rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
    but I don't thrust RedHat, so I'm going to play with other
    binutils 2.10 [maby from suse source] and compile it for my system

  • Problem Installation in Linux Slackware 7.1

    I try install Oracle 8i Enterprise in Linux Slackware 7.1 (kernel 2.2.16), but the runInstaller don't work.
    I read the installation manuals and make all steps, but the runInstaller don't work.
    I get this message:
    ./runInstaller
    The Java RunTime Environment was not found at bin/jre. Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
    Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.1.8 or higher and try again.
    : No such file or directory
    I try --> ln -s /usr/local/jre118_v3 /usr/local/java
    and --> ln -s /usr/local/jre118_v3 /usr/local/jre
    Nothing work's.
    Somebody can help me ?????

    My guess is that this also applies to the newest slackware version, because i presume that slackware 7.0 also use the newest glibc libraries;
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Oracle 8.1.6 does not work under Red Hat >Linux 7. Yes, that's the problem
    that I mentioned in the doc--you get to 80% >and the DBCA crashes and the
    Oracle executables die.
    I've heard, but I haven't tried it myself, >that if you install the latest
    glibc errata (2.1.94) then the DBCA >completes but the Oracle executables
    still die. The DBCA problem was apparently >a Java issue that is fixed in
    the errata. But you're still out of luck >since the exes won't work.
    It might appear that this is a problem with >Red Hat Linux 7. But it appears
    that it is a problem with some assumptions >that Oracle made, assumptions
    that worked with glibc 2.1.3 (the C library >included with RHL 6.2) but which
    prove false with later glibc versions. As >other Linux distributions adopt
    the new glibc Oracle will fail to work on >them as well.
    The best advice I can give at this point is >to install and run Oracle on
    Red Hat Linux 6.2. Hopefully Oracle will >address the glibc issues with the
    8.1.7 release.
    ChrisI then installed Orace on RedHat 6.1 and it worked like a dream.
    Maybe you guys should try your luck on an earier version of slackware?
    Hope that helped...

  • Installation on Linux Slackware 7.1.0

    I have this problem with the Oracle installer in Slackware 7.1.0. I've tried oracle 8.1.5 and 8.1.6.
    The installer hangs when trying to run the database configuration so i end up with a working oracle install except that i don't have a system database.
    Anyone seen this before or know what to do about it?
