SLiM crashes X on switch to console, prevents resume

i'm facing something of a mystery, here.
when i switch to a virtual console ( <ctrl>+<alt>+f{1-9} ) after logging into a desktop session via slim, the x session crashes and i'm presented with a new slim login screen.
i first noticed this while (finally!) trying to setup suspend-to-ram.  when i resumed, instead of getting my x session back, i got a new login.  i thought it was a problem with resuming from S3, but it happens when manually switching as well, and disappears when i disable slim.  if i understand correctly, resuming from S3 involves a switch-to-console at some point.
i don't see much to go on in my log files (and i read them all, dammit), but here's the following from /var/log/slim.log.  most of the messages are generated by the applications that are started by startfluxbox, and predictably, they start failing after the x server has crashed:
/usr/bin/xauth: creating new authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
xmodmap: unable to open file '/home/user/.Xmodmap' for reading
xmodmap: 1 error encountered, aborting.

You could try this as it's similar to what "madeye" said but append a plain "s" to the kernel line. Puts you in "single-user mode" my password seems to work then. Actually I think what you guys are discussing is the same thing affecting me at the moment. I need to investigate this more. Hope this helps!!
Update: This was not my issue after all. My issue was that I switched to using sha512 passwords via the Wiki page. I was also using fgetty which doesn't support sha512 passwords. Fixed now!

What do you mean by "dead"? For me, dead is complete system freeze. Are you thrown to a TTY console? Is it just a blinking cursor? What's the problem?

  • FCP 7 crashes only when switching to other applications/finder

    Hi everyone,
I've been working on a feature film for about 9 months in FCP 7.  All went fine.  I regularly backed up, copied to new projects (have had a few bad experiences with corrupted projects) and have otherwise had no problems.
Last night, all of a sudden, I got the spinning wheel of death while tidying something up.  FCP crashed.  No problem, I restarted it but the same thing happened again.  I trashed my prefs, figure that would fix it but it didn't.  Very strange because I didn't change anything with the project and the file itself is not that big, maybe 35 mb.
After about 20 crahses I figured out that it only crashes when I switch between FCP and another application, say Safari.  I can work away on the project, but as soon as I cmd+tab to any other app (including finder) when I go back to FCP I get the spinning wheel and it eventually shows up as not responding.
I have re-installed FCP 3 times since yesterday, re-installed the OS, repaired the disk permissions, trashed the pref's A LOT, and have now even upgraded the OS to Lion - none of this has had any effect.
If someone sees something obvious that I'm missing please let me know.  I'm tearing my hair out here.  Searching extensively only doesn't seem to yield much.
    I'm using a MacPro 1.1, OSX 10.7.4, 2x 3 ghz quad core processors and 14 gb ram.
    Thank you for your time
    Rick

I've had this problem too and figured out a solution to try before evicerating your system and trial and erroring RAM back into socket.
If you edit anything like I do you like to always be able to go back after making changes so you save all of your old sequences just in case you need to reference them later.  While working on a televison show my FCP projects for each episode consisted of a sequence for each show act and a master sequence of the entire show run, all of which I copied and saved at the end of each day so I could backtrack changes if I needed to.  Multiply this process by two weeks or so and pretty soon my episode projects consisted of at least 28-32 separate sequences in addition to all my media links, music, SFX, etc.
The solution that worked for me was to copy my current project and delete all the old sequences saving only the most recent two copies of my work;keeping a backup copy of my old work but removing them from my active project.
I had to do this folder by folder, about 4 sequences at a time) to prevent FCP from crashing in the middle of the delete but once it was done the problem was solved.  I can switch back and forth between applications without any consequence and I'm back on track and able to work again.  I've since adjusted my workflow so that when I hit four days worth of sequences I duplicate the project and (in the copy) I delete all the past sequences and start from my current cut.  e.g. If I worked for one week and have five folders of past sequences then at the beginning of the next week I copy the whole project, delete the old material and start from my current cut.  If I need to reference old changes I just open up the old project and it's all available without crippling my system.
As best as I can determine the crashes are a result of Final Cut trying to refresh media links to too many things when you toggle back to it from another progam and locking up.  This seemed to solve the problem.
    Hope it helps.

  • Can not administer Catalyst 2960 switch via console

    Hello,
I want to configure my switch via console cable, the switch boots up normally, and there are no configurations present on the switch.  However, anything I type does not appear on the terminal client.  I used several terminal clients (TeraTerm, PuTTY, HyperTerminal), all latest versions as well as different PCs.  I even forced the switch to rommon mode, still, anything I type does not appear on the terminal client.

My iphone 4 camera shutter won't open. I have already done a restore and I am using the latest iOS. The front facing camera works during FaceTime but crashes when I switch to rear camera. in Camera mode I can't switch to front camera. I plan on replacing this phone with an iphone 5s when it comes out but I need this phone to work until then.

When you did the restore, did you restore from a backup or restore as new? The final step of user troubleshooting is to restore as a new device, not from a backup. If you restore as a new device and the camera still does not function, it is probably a hardware issue. Make an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar and have the device checked by a Genius.

  • [POWERPC] Cannot switch tty consoles during install on iBook G4

So no matter what I do, I can't seem to properly switch TTY consoles during installation.
If I press FN-ALT-F[1-5], I end up at a console with a blinking cursor and nothing else. If I try to get back to where I came from (TTY1 I guess), I can't - I'm stuck at the screen with the blinking cursor. The only way I can get out is with CTRL-ALT-DELETE-FN or by restarting my computer.
Anyone know how to resolve this? My installing keeps failing during the package install and I can't get to TTY5 to figure out why.
    Thanks!

I ran into this recently, and it drove me up the wall! After a lot of trial and error I figured out the correct order in which to press the keys.
    1. press and hold <option (alt)>
    2. press and hold <fn>
    3. now press the desired function key
As long as you keep holding <option> + <fn>, you can keep switching consoles. If you get the blinking cursor on a black screen, that means you pressed <option> + <fn> simultaneously - simply let go of both keys, then press them in the above order.
    Happy switching!

Now I have noticed other programs, if shut down (such as spysweeper or registry mechanic) will not restart unless they are stopped as a process.
It is frustrating to deal with vista the last 2 years. Should have stayed with XP Professional.
As for firewalls, no change if I switch to the Windows version or not.
I know now to start the task manager and leave it in the tray while I work on the web site.

  • Microsoft Word crashing/lag time switching between apps

My Microsoft Word suddenly started crashing constantly. Everything is up to date with both Word and Mac software. Now, I'm starting to experience a lag between trying to highlight a word—same delay is happening when I go between applications. I have OS X and Word 2008. Thoughts?

I have the exact same issue. Whenever I switch to another app via the Dock, cmd-Tab, or clicking on another window, after a few seconds iPhoto crashes with no errors in the log (just a crash log). I had iPhoto Library Manager rebuild the library of 12,000 photos which took most of a day and had to restart through several crashes. The rebuilt library worked, but isn't really acceptable since it changed all the key photos on my events, lost all my facebook albums and slideshows, and seemed to ignore a few days of recent organizing and labeling.
It seems like some idle process (detecting faces maybe) is kicking in whenever iPhoto goes in the background that causes it to crash when it's backgrounded and idle.
The thread that crashed in the crash log is pretty uninformative:

  • Crashes on Tab Switch, Tab Close, or Quit

I've been working with STP for a few months at my school and I really like it, but recently I'm having a real pain of a problem with some of my STMP files.
Whenever I open multiple tabs, whether double-clicking on an audio file in the multitrack editor or just opening a new tab, if I try to close the new tab or switch to another tab or even if I try to quit the program, I get the beachball of death. It doesn't matter what I do in the new tab...in fact, even if I do nothing at all to it, just open then try to close, it crashes. I have to force quit every time and it's very frustrating.
I've tried deleting (app, prefs, any file labeled with STP in its name) and reinstalling, repairing disk permissions, but nothing works. Again, this doesn't happen with all my STMP files, but a lot of them have this problem. Can anyone offer some advice on this?

    Hi Arklop,
    Hmm I'm not seeing this.
Just to check, are you definitely running the Universal Binary version of Soundtrack Pro? Also, how much memory do you have?
Where is the app crashing? Why don't you post the crashlog on this forum--maybe someone on the forum will have an idea what's going on.
What audio device are you using? Do you get the same results if you just use the built-in audio interface?

  • ITunes 10.4 crashes when I switch to it during or after playback

Since updating to iTunes 10.4 it crashes whenever I'm playing certain media and switch to iTunes (alt-tab). iTunes crashes immediately upon becoming the foreground application.
This happens when playing podcasts (some, but not others) and movies as far as I've been able to test this. It happens with the same tracks each and every time while other tracks play fine.
All my media is located on a NAS (QNAP TS-419P+) which is connected to the machine iTunes runs on via AFP. I'm aware NAS is not officially supported by Apple for iTunes, but everything worked fine up to iTunes 10.3. The crashes only started happening with 10.4.
I'm running iTunes 10.4 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2008 Mac Pro and I've repaired permissions on the system drive.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Message was edited by: Tom-Bo-Mac (edited to add)

I've just tested accessing the iTunes library on the NAS from iTunes 10.4 from another machine and iTunes does NOT crash on that machine. So apparently something's awry with the iTunes installation on my Mac Pro...
What would be the best approach to "repairing" iTunes besides the obvious (deleting prefs)?

  • Can't use alt-f1 to switch to console

I'm using gnome on my NB100 netbook. Everything is working great apart from a few small issues:
I can't use ctrl-alt-f1 etc to switch to the console - nothing happens, and
    I can't use ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X - again, nothing happens.
Also, when I shut down from the shutdown dialog in gnome, nothing happens. If I open up a terminal and run "sudo killall Xorg" then X dies and the machine proceeds to shutdown. I can see in the console that it hasn't started to change the runlevel until I manually kill Xorg.
I have checked in xev just in case that Xorg wasn't recognizing the ctrl or alt keys properly, but no problems there.
To be honest I'm stumped. Any advice would be gratefully received.

  • IPhoto 6 crashes everytime when switching application

iPhoto 6 crashes every single time when I switch to other applications like mail or iWeb via a command inside iPhoto 6 (emailing pics/ building web site, etc.) or via Finder (using application switcher or not). I did pretty much everything previously posted resolutions elsewhere regarding iPhoto 6 crash like rebuilding it, tossing .plist files, correcting permissions, Disk Warrior, etc. Here is iPhoto.crash.log. Any findings, suggestions would be appreciated.

First of all, I have no clue how to read the crash log.
With that out of the way, create a new user and open up iPhoto from there. Report back with results.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 crashes frequently when switching between programs

I've started to frequent program crashes in Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 in Mac OS 10.10.3 on my 2013 Mac Pro. The issue occurs when I switch from another program, say word or Adobe Audion back to Premiere Pro. I get the 'we're sorry' dialogue box and the application crashes. About 50% of the time when this happens - when I reopen the application it crashes again - and then on the 2nd re-open it's successful. It's really hampering my workflow to worry about a crash every time I move into AE or Audition. I've uninstalled all plugins, uninstalled and re-installed PP, cleared the media cache, and reset preferences. Still happening every day on this machine. FYI i have a 2013 iMac running the same OS which has been opening the same project files without this issue - so it seems like it's specific to this machine for some reason...

    Hi,
I would suggest the following steps:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2014/09/10/premiere-pro-cc-freezing-on-startup-or-cras hing-while-working-mac-os-x-10-9-and-later/
Run a disk permission repair on your boot drive, and
Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error | Apple Support Communities
    Thanks,
    Rameez
