Download and used the complementary copy of iMovie HD v6.0.4 if you want special effects/third-party plug-ins. iMovie '08 has no command structure for the threading of delayed third-party rendering modules. If you must use iMovie '08, create your special effects as either pre- or post-edits.

Slow/Fast/Reverse DOES NOT WORK
I have read other posts on this issue. When I attempt to apply this effect, it does not work. This is a new project in iMovie HD 6. Clips will not take this effect. It shows up in the preview fine but will not apply. Below is what I sent Apple. Any and all help (solutions) appreciated. Is anyone else using this effect successfully in HD 6?
I select a clip (it is selected), click on the Editing tab, then click on the Video FX tab, and then select the fast/slow/reverse option. I am correctly using the slider to slow the clip down just one tick past the default position. The effect shows up in preview but will not apply. The red progress line (that indicates the effect is being rendered) shows up for about a tenth of a second and then stops. I am using the latest version of iMovie (6.0.3). I have a Dual 2 Ghz G5 Tower. I have 1.5 GB of ram. I am using OSX 10.4 8. All my software is up to date.
The camera I am using is a Sony VX2000. Never had a problem with iMovie 4 and 5. I have two internal drives. I have an external drive that is for backups only. All three are Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format. The drive i am capturing to is the original drive that came with with my computer. It is 160 GB. 147 GB is free. I keep this drive clean and only for current projects.
I did have some plugins installed for iMovie from GeeThree. They are the updated versions for Intel and PowerPC running OSX 10.4.8. Again, all software is up to date. I did remove those plugins from the plugin folder. Also, I have ran Disk Utility and permissions are fine. I have not removed the preference files yet (plist) because I wasn't sure which ones to remove.
A third thing I did was to create a new project (after unstalling the plugins, restarting, using Disk Utility), reimport some footage and see if the slow/fast/reverse effect would work then. It did not work. I then saved all my current work and saved to tape. I NEED THIS EFFECT TO WORK! Please who can solve my problem? Dinner is on me!! LOL!

Video FX slow/fast/reverse
Hi again,
I am having trouble with the slow /fast setting in FX.
When setting the speed if I try to change it there seems to be no way to do this without returning to the original state.
I am sure this was possible in past I movie versions, you could just change the speed at any time during the editing stage.
Am I missing something?if your project is located on some external harddrive, it has to be formatted to "MacOsExtended" with Disk Utility, otherwise strrrange things coudl happen..

Slow/fast/reverse problem
sorry if this has been posted before. when i try to apply this effect it does one of multiple things. it either renders and then the clip turns black and won't play, it wont render at all, or the clip renders and then when i click to play it it plays the previous clip instead of the one i rendered with the effect. any suggestions or fixes? is this a bug or virus? also i lost an entire video project out of nowhere. i had it saved on an ext. HD and when i clicked the file it just dissapeared and now i cant find it anywhere. any thoughts would be great. thanks in advanved.
welcome fiestacitykid to the boards ...
update your Public Profile.. I assume, your project is located on an external harddrive, right?
ext. HDD have to be erased/formatted BEFORE usage via the Disk Utility (Utilities Folder...) to 'MacOsExtended' ... -
How do you add video effects-slow motion
Not real happy with 08 over previous versions but I would like to gain back some of the functionality that I regularly used. How do I add special effects, such as slow motion to a video clip or a portion of a video clip.
How do you do it IMovie HD in Ilife 08?
Both applications can be run on the same computer. Use whichever application best serves your needs. If you need a lot of plug-in effects, use HD. If few or nor effects other than standard transitions and titles are required and speed is paramount, then use iMovie '08. If you like being innovative and want to try your hand at creating your own effects, use iMovie '08 and learn how perform pre- and post-edits to create your own fast motion, slow motion, stop motion, pseudo time lapse, still framed, backgrounded, blended, layered, picture-in-picture, etc. that may "tickle your fancy." -
I forgot about slow download speed's negative effects... hence (I think) the videos I downloaded stop in the middle. I can get a better download speed if I connect directly to LAN. Is there anyway for me to fix the videos previously purchased or re download them without having to re purchase them? I'm attempting to play the video's directly from iTune "purchased" folder on my Win7 Home Premium PC.
Never mind.. I found instructions on how to re download purchased items. I only need help downloading 2 more items. I love the attention I've recieeved (I guess silly questions go unoticed... sigh)

Problems with video effects in iMovie
Hi, I'm a new user of imovie and I have found some difficulties: where is the video effects menu? In particular, it is possible to increase (or decrease) the speed of a clip?
Thanks for anyone who could help me,
Mac ShunsukeiM08 offers no effects at all, that option was dropped by Apple..
you're entitled on a free download of iMHD6 here
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
which offers fast/slow/reverse as v/fx ..
another option is usage of a free 3rd party app, link and how-to on my site here
http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/slowmowithim08
have you seen the tutorials for iM08?

Slow motion, reverse playback and others
Dear members:
After doing some research that included help files for Final Cut Express HD and Apple's support pages I haven't been able to find a straight and definited answer to my question.
I am trying to find ways to add slow motion, reverse playback and fast playback effects to my sequences in Final Cut Express HD but haven't found a way to do it. Some pages I found seem to indicate that these functions may not be available in Final Cut Express HD but they are not specific enough. I honestly can't believe that an application that is meant to provide professional results wouldn't offer these which are probably some of the most used effects in video.
Do any of you know if and how these effects can be used with Final Cut Express HD ?
In case it can't handle these effects, how much would an upgrade to Final Cut Pro HD cost if I am coming from Final Cut Express HD ? Is there an (reasonable) upgrade path ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Joseph ChamberlainI'm sure you can do this w/ FC3xpress - although I haven't used that app in years- but you can try this:
-Select the clip you want to add the 3ffect to then press Apple-J
-That should bring up the menu where you can determine the new speed percentage.
-If it doesn't have the Reverse checkmark option (I don't think it did in earlier versions) you can do a negative percentage to make the clip play in reverse.
Also it looks like there is no way to upgrade from Final Cut 3xpress to Final Cut Studio
You can upgrade from a few apps but Express isn't included in that list.
The list is here if you'd like to see for yourself.
http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
And if you click the buy you have the option to buy the upgrade (intead of the crossgrade) -
Neo Bios 1.6 and Slow/Fast/Turbo/Ultra Modes
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Slow/Fast/Turbo/Ultra modes in Bios 1.6 on the Neo boards?
The only mode I can get to work is the Slow mode. On all the rest, Win XP boots OK, but when I would run programs, the screen would lock for a few seconds, then come back in low resolution stating I had an unspecified "device failure", and I had to restart my computer for it to work properly.
In any case, I have no clue what the difference is between modes. I was able to complete a 3dMark test while in Turbo mode, and compared it with one run in Slow mode, and the differences were minimal.
Can anyone enlighten me?No OC, Timings = by SPD, DRAM Frequency = Auto (200/400)
Slow/Fast/Turbo/Ultra-Turbo results
AIDA32 Display/GPU
GPU Clock 200 210 210 210
Memory clk 458 (no change)
AIDA32 Motherboard/Motherboard (Effective clocks)
FSB 809 (no change)
Mem 404 (no change)
Chipset 270 404 404 404
SANDRA MAX3 Memory Benchmark
INT 4340 4837 4956 5099
Float 4390 4834 4970 5048
PAT OFF ON ON ON
Timings 2.0,4,4,6 2.0,3,3,6 2.0,2,3,6 2.0,2,2,6
"Slow" disables PAT/MAT and reduces the chipset bus frequency to 66Mhz (quad pumped)
"Fast/Turbo/Ultra-Turbo" Overclock your video card!!!
If you set your memory timings manualy or use a ratio other than 1:1 there will be no difference between Fast/Turbo/Ultra-turbo (only difference being "by SPD" memory timings) -as far as i can tell
There maybe other differences but not found them ....yet -
Premiere Elements 7: track matte key video effect does not work?
I want to use the track matte key video effect to fade out some cropped video clips. So I did a test:
first track: video clip
second track: PNG file, black with white circle
third track: video clip with FX with second track (here: Video 5) and luminance
As you can see in the picture the small preview pic above the effects shows the effect like I expected: a circle with the content of the third, lowest, clip. But the large video preview shows the first clip.
What did I do wrong?
I tested other settings and track orders. No efforts.Bill, thanks again for your help! Good tutorial. That's what I need in principle! My try was a bit more complicated ...
But I can't help. The white area stays (see screenshot top left corner). Only some of the small blurred area around the shape shines through as I could see playing around without blurring the video clip.
I used:
title with white (it is 100% white) shape and blur effect above
video clip with track matte effect and matte alpha on the title track, reversed (blur effect on whole clip like in the tutorial)
Rendering and export does not change anything.
I'm feeling a bit stupid. -
Hi all,
What is the Premiere equivalent of the HUE/SATURATION adjustment layer found i Photoshop ? I am trying to slightly desaturate (about -53%) my movie to give it a more gritty look. I could easily get the look I wanted in Photoshpo by going to NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER-->HUE/SATURATION.
Is there a similar approach for Premiere? In the Video effects folder somewhere? Thanks!Use the "Fast Color Corrector and "Saturation".

SLOW, FAST, TURBO, ULTRA TURBO
Hey Guys
Nice forum....Just have to get used to it. I find the searching isnt as good as the lats one but look gr8.
Anyways I have just got 1024MB Corsair PC3200 2-2-2-5 RAM. Its amazing made my PC so much faster and timings have made it so responsive.
Anyways I have a 875P motherboard like you can see below but in the BIOS I can select different options (Performance Options)
SLOW -> FAST -> TURBO -> ULTRA TURBO.
What exactly do these do? On my last generic RAM I had it on FAST and not have it on TURBO. Is it worth goin onto ULTRA TURBO? Also how kinda effect with these setting have on the life of the PC.
Cheers guys
SASpazHere is a review, there is also a lot there to take in but,
http://www.gruntville.com/reviews/memory/corsair_twinx3200xl/page3.php
The settings you are referring to are associated with PAT.
There are different levels of PAT, if you choose slow, is it off in CPUZ?
FAST
TURBO
ULTRA TURBO
CPUZ will report PAT to be enabled on all of these settings but it may not be fully enabled.
ULTRA TURBO = FULLY enabled PAT mode.
Run this program to tell you the level of PAT
ftp://ftp.heise.de/pub/ct/ctsi/ctiaw.zip
Extract it to a folder, run the lowercase version.
See what PAT level it is running at.
Then change modes and run the program again.
What it does, going back to the INTEL link,
The setting adjust the memory/chipset timings to achieve higher system performance.
It should not be a problem if you have good memory.
Now is this starting to make sense -
Fast Canon EOS video trimming like in Snow Leopard
Hello,
I used QuickTime X in Snow Leopard especially for video trimming because it was really fast without slow transcoding like in Lion version of QuickTime X. I'm shooting with Canon EOS and I'm really disappointed because previous vesion of QuickTime X reduced file size too and it was really fast.. by the way QuickTime 7 doesn't work how I wanted too. Is there some easy, fast and nice alternative?
Thank youThank you, It's fast but trimmed video output is bigger than original. I'm using Save as..
You did not specify the compression format or settings used by your camera or the application being used for viewing the trimmed content. One cause for a change in display dimensions is the use of a PAR value. For instance, DV and VOB files are encoded using a 720x480 data matrix but may actually display at 853x480 or 640x480 for NTSC content under normal conditions. I use a similar work flow when making 720p files for iPhone 4/TViPad use by encoding them with a 1024 data width for a 1280 display width to save file space. Unfortunately, if the PAR value is lost in a work flow, then the encoding width value will be used for display in all applicagtions. In a similar manner, if the display dimension values do not equal the PAR value display dimensions, then the file will display correctly in some applications and incorrectly in others. (E.g, QT 7will display file using the physical display dimension settings while QT X will display the file using the PAR aspect ratio value.) -
Video effects for a horror/thriller trailer
I'm working on recutting a trailer as a different genre and I was wondering how to do a couple of effects. How do you do the white flash on the screen(not a dip to white transition but in the middle of the clip) and the flash that shows a negative of the original image like you see in some horror/thriller trailers?
Hi owiseone,
Here's how I would construct the effect.
Create the "negative image" effect.
Apply the Invert effect: Video Effects > Channel > Invert
Try different Channel Options. I chose "Lightness."
Desaturate the colors on the negative image.
Apply a Fast Color Corrector
Take Saturation down to 0.
Adjust the Input Levels slider to taste
Make the effect flash on and off with the original clip by using the Strobe effect, or by manually adding the effect to Add Edits.
First, do the following
Copy paste the clip to V2.
Remove effects from the clip on V1.
Do either of the following to the clip on V2:
Apply the Strobe Light effect: Video Effects > Stylize > Strobe Light and adjust parameters to taste.
With the Razor tool or the Add Edit keyboard shortcut, create splices that are several frames long, create them either the same length, or random durations. Delete portions of the clip between the add edits.
Play back the effect and adjust parameters until you're happy with the effect.
Set up a range to play In to Out
Enable Loop Playback
Adjust parameters in any of the effects as they play In to Out.
Hope that helps!

AE video effects vs. PP video effect-CS4
Can someone tell me authoritatively if the AE video effects as a whole are superior to PP? I'm thinking the answer has to be yes, but what about color correction for 720p footage for subjects [faces]?
If you believe AE is superior, what is your opinion about Auto Color/Contrast/Levels, especially vs. PP Fast Color Corrector/Levels/Auto Color, etc.? I'm trying to avoid major expenditures on Magic Bullet products since my projects are only standard studio interviews and do not call for anything high caliber.
Thank you for your feedback.
PaulHi Rick.
I really appreciate the link to the free Colorista. I didn't know they had a free version. I'm looking forward to trying it, hopefully later today.
In the meantime, you were very gracious in asking for a screen shot. I'm giving you two, both raw footage shot on an Panasonic HVX-200p at 720p60. The first is what I'd consider shot with good lighting and the second, well, speaks for itself.
As you noted, this is an interview destined for a DVD curriculum (not a movie). I have to chroma key a background in AE anyway, so I was thinking that AE would be the best place to do this. Todd seemed to suggest in this thread that the AE & PP color correction tools are identical or at least work identically (the settings are the same), and that PP was in fact better for "quick color correction to an entire image", which is what I am looking to do since the whole thing was shot poorly with the key light too far away. I did do a quick test in AE using AutoColor and adjusted the White Clip down to .05% and got a pretty good result except that the inner eye sockets still looked very dark. Colorista may change the discussion entirely, however.
I deeply appreciate your willingess to help so actively.
Paul
Update: Just tried Colorista Free. The Highlight Control alone worked wonders. Looking forward to learning how to use it more. A very superior product.
Highlight adjusted only in Colorista Free, applied directly to the clip:
