Slow start-up for JSF projects on Sun Java System Application Server 8.2?
App. Server: Sun Java System Application Server 8.2
I really don't understand why a JSF project starts-up so slow on Sun Java System Application Server 8.2.
I've gone through the "Overview of Sun Java System Application Server Performance" guide and tuned my server.
It's not memory or processor, I am developing on a SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-27 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-MP.
The JSF project contains one index.jsp and one login.faces - that's it. But it takes up towards 15 seconds to load the page, if I type:
http://<domain>:8080/login/
I would believe that the application should be a lot faster.
What can I do to solve this?
Thanks,
--Todd
Yes I am.
Right now I have:
<!-- Faces Servlet -->
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup> -1 </load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Persistent Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.icesoft.faces.webapp.xmlhttp.PersistentFacesServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup> 1 </load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Blocking Servlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.icesoft.faces.webapp.xmlhttp.BlockingServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup> 1 </load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<!-- Preload -->
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Transaction Browser</servlet-name>
<jsp-file>/transactionbrowser.jspx</jsp-file>
<load-on-startup> 1 </load-on-startup>
</servlet>It still doesn't work, so you may be right.
Thanks,

Sun Java System Application Server Standard stops responding for no reason
Dear Sun Users and Support.
We ran into an issue that we can't find any cause for. For some reason our Sun Java System Application Server 8.2 Standard stops responding to HTTP calls. Even Admin console can't be invoked. The server by itself appears to be running according to the Windows Services window.
It happens very rarely but once it happens the server needs to be restarted.
There are no logs in the log files.
This happens to multiple Sun Servers at the same time (As if some kind of timer shuts them off).
The servers run on Windows Server 2003.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
These servers are in the production environment and have expected uptime of 99.9%.
Thank you.This has happened to us a couple of times and it was caused by Windows running out of TCP/IP connections. Next time it happens do a "netstat -an" to see if you have an extremely large amount of connections in time-wait state.
If you do this is probably the culprit and I'm sorry to say that I don't know of a cure. From what I've heard (objection your honour, hearsay!) this is caused by bugs in Windows TCP/IP stack.
If you require a 99.9% uptime you should perhaps consider switching to Linux or Unix. I know, easier said than done!
Hope this helps,

The Sun Java System Application Server could not start
Hello All,
I downloaded the Java Pet Store example from sun's website and followed the instructions for installation. After successful installation, I tried to deploy the project and gave the following error
C:\Documents and Settings\sina\My Documents\Projects\services\nbproject\build-impl.xml:194: Deployment error:
The Sun Java System Application Server could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- IDE timeout: refresh the server node to see if it's running now.
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
- Invalid installation location.
See the server log for details.
BUILD FAILED (total time: 5 minutes 20 seconds)
The link above points to the following line in the build-impl.xml file
<nbdeploy debugmode="false" forceRedeploy="${forceRedeploy}" clientUrlPart="${client.urlPart}" clientModuleUri="${client.module.uri}"/>
Can any one help whats wrong.An early response will be highly appreciated.
Kind Regards.
Hasnain Javed.Hi,
Maybe you already got this fix but here is a suggestion, a snippet from the readme index,html of the petstore download
# Start the Sun Java System Application Server and the JavaDB database. To do so, open a command prompt and change directory to <javaeesdk.home>/bin and issue the following commands:
asadmin start-database
asadmin start-domain
# Change directory to <petstore.home> and enter the following commands
ant setup
ant run
This will setup, build and deploy the petstore on the application server, and then launch the application homepage in your default browser.
The "ant setup" that you run from <petstore.home> (petstore.home is the directory where petstore is installed or where you unzipped it) will populate the database wth data and setup the proper database tables etc that are used by the application.

Sun Java System Application Server could not start
Hi
I have installed JDK1.5 Update1 + netbeans 5.5 with the JBOSS bundle and added the Sun Java System Application Server 9.1.02.
I am creating the EJB-JMS application described at

Hello.war_deployed not generated for Sun Java System Application Server
I have installed and started the Sun Java System Application Server successfully, and can access http://localhost:8080 without any problem. However, after I copied the hello.war following the below instruction in "QuickStart", the hello.war_deployed wasn't generated in the "autodeploy" directory.
# Find<INSTALL_DIR>/samples/quickstart/hello.war.
# Copy it to <INSTALL_DIR>/domains/domain1/autodeploy/
Anybody knows why?
Thanks.Hai

Sun Java System Application Server for Mac OS X ?
hi everybody.
does anybody know if (any given date ?) sun is planning to offer a distribution of its sun java system application server for mac os x ? or even better: any ideas on how to install a currently available version on mac os x 10.4 ? the linux bin seems not to be readable.
thank you very much in advance, folks.
and have a nice day
andre from berlin, germanyAs you noticed, standalone MacOS distribution of application server is currently not available, but what you can do is to download NetBeans with J2EE bundle or Creator (for free) and install bundled Application Server on this platform. Download URLs are:
http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/download.php?type=4.1
(NetBeans/J2EE cobundle)
http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/devtools/free/
(Creator)
Also, you can install and run Glassfish (which is open-source version of upcoming Application Server 9.0) on MacOS X:

SOAP on Sun Java System Application Server 9
I am running the Sun Java System Application Server 9 (SJSAS). My goal is to have SOAP running on the server to handle incoming messages. I cannot find the answers to the following critical questions anywhere.
1. Should I be creating my own soap client/server with the javax.xml.soap package, using some utility that might come bundled with SJSAS that I don't know about, or using something like Apache AXIS?
2. Whatever I use, how should it be deployed to the application server? AXIS comes as a bunch of jar files, but to deploy a web service to SJSAS requires a war. Instructions for other application servers for using AXIS seem not to apply for SJSAS for this reason.
3. After I get the server installed, how do I actually connect that to any of the rest of the code on my server. For instance, would I put the actual business logic to query the persistence layer in a stateless session bean and then somehow reference the methods in that bean to compose the return message to go to the client?
If anybody knows of or is willing to create a tutorial to achieve this goal on SJSAS and has a place to post it, that would probably be a great contribution to the information available online. If I am missing such a tutorial, I apologize and would be glad to have it pointed out to me. Any assistance with actually deploying soap for SJSAS would be tremendously helpful. There is a lot of why to use it, when to use it, what the spec is, and so on online. There is precious little how to use it and even less how to deploy it. Thank you for any help.
Ryanthe sun java system application server 8 and 9 comes with certutil and pk12util (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/tools/pk12util.html) programes. using them you can import them
or check on google how to conver pk12 certs to NSS format.
another option is to open the certificate in Internet explorer and save to cer format and then convert. -
Webservice Connection Timeout Error in Sun Java System Application server
I have a java code to connect to Ebay Shopping Webservice that uses the client stub generated through Axis. The code works fine when I run it from the main method of a stand alone Java application. Which means there is no issue with the Proxy settings or any other network setting that could block the webservice from my system. However when I use the same code inside a JSF based Web Application, a connection timeout error comes up. The Web application is deployed on the Sun Java System Application server. The stacktrace of the exception is

The JDK version on my machine is 1.5.0_14. Can somebody point me as where I should be looking for errors?You need to delete all the files under the 'generated' directory to force the server to recompile them after the JDK upgrade. Also check in domain.xml and make sure the JVM parameter is pointing to the JDK that you have installed. It is also worthwhile to check asenv.conf to see which JDK that file is pointing to as well.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I am having the same issue.

ColdFusion compatibility with Sun Java System Application Server
Background: A vendor that is doing a project for our
department told us that ColdFusion MX 6.1 is not compatible with
Sun Java System Application Server Enterprise Edition 8.1 and
beyond. Since we are migrating our server environment to this
release of Sun Java System Application Server Enterprise Edition,
we face a difficult situation in that our ColdFusion applications
will no longer run. Thus, we would like Adobe to answer a couple
questions which will help us determine what course of action we
ought to take.
Q: Will applications we developed using ColdFusion MX 6.1 run
on Sun Java System Application Server Enterprise Edition 8.1? Below
is a detailed description of the Sun Java System Application Server
Enterprise Edition we intend to migrate to.
Q: Is Adobe aware of any compatibility issues with this
configuration?
Q: What is Adobe's support commitment regarding future
releases of ColdFusion MX and Sun Java System Application Server
Enterprise Edition? Does Adobe intend to continue support this
environment?
Configuration: Sun Java System Application Server Enterprise
Edition 8.1_02 (build b24-p11)
Below is the specification levels for the 8.1 server
(J2EE1.4), note it can use J2SE 1.4.2_06 or 5.0 as the JAVA
runtime.
J2EE 1.4 compatible
Components: J2SE 1.4.2_06 or J2SE 5.0
Application and Application Client
Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 2.1
Java Servlet 2.4
JavaServer Pages(JSP) 2.0
J2EE Connector Architecture 1.5
JMX 1.2
JMS 1.1
Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) 1.2
and Java Transaction API (JTA) 1.0
Web Services:Java Web Services Developer Pack 1.5
Java APIs for XML Registries (JAXR) 1.0
Java API for XML-based Remote Procedure Calls (JAX-RPC) 1.1
SOAP With Attachments API for Java (SAAJ) 1.2
WS-I Basic Profile 1.0
Other:J2EE Deployment 1.1
J2EE Management 1.0
Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) 1.2
JavaMail 1.3
Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) 1.0
Java Authorization Contract for Containers (JACC) 1.0First of all, is there a reason why you are using jRockit?
Since the issue appeared after upgrading the windows, the issue would potentially be in the interaction between JVM and OS.
Also, there were some issues related to memory leak that were fixed in AS 8.2.
May be you should try with a Sun JVM and AS 8.2. -

How does on avoid getting it in the install, and how does Sun stop adding it to the distribution?
Thanks
