Slow word-to-pdf creation

I have a user who is having long creation times when making a Word document into a PDF. She is having to wait 5-10 minutes at least because the process will hang up at 10% then complete after awhile.
Are there any settings I could adjust to help speed up this process for her?

Try emptying her TEMP folder. Also, is her WORD file graphic intensive. If so, are the resolutions set low (like 200dpi) in WORD or is she using high resolution and other things. There are a lot of variables that could impact the conversion time and I have just suggested a few. If you wanted to post the DOC and PDF files created, others may be able to advise you better.

    Hi ...
    Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

    If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
    A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
    Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
    From the drop down menu click Restart.
    See if that makes a difference ...

  • Word crashes mid PDF creation - Word 2003 Acrobat 9.3.0

    I have a new PC and a fresh clean install of CS5 Design Permuim, including Arobat 9. The organisation is still using Office 2003 and no upgrade path in sight for that. Myself and several colleagues with the same software profile are now experiencing frequent problems with Word crashing mid PDF creation.
    This has always been an issue with the ocassional Word file in Acrobat 8, but Distiller always worked as an alternative - NOT this time!
    PDF Maker gives no error message, just that Word has encounted a problem and needs to close.
    Distiller produces the following log message, then freezes completely. I then have to force quit Word to exit!
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
    %%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: --nostringval-- ]%%
    Stack:
    /mF_OTF_V
    %%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
    %%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
    Not all documents are affected, but I can remove almost all of the content from the affected document and it still causes the error.
    I have tried repairing Acrobat - no change.
    One other odd symptom - after each crash, the default printer on the machine has changed to Adobe PDF.
    I can successfulkly make the PDF on another machine which has not been upgraded to Acrobat 9. The rest of the settings are identical on the two machines, they are both running a standard organisation environment, with the same verion of word etc.
    Can anyone suggest how to fix or at least isolate the cause of the problem?

    Please update to latest Acrobat 9 release which is 9.4.2.
    Also do let us know
    a) office 2003 flavour: Standard or professional?
    b) OS flavour? Also whether it is 32bit or 64bit?
    Also as you mentioned that "Not all documents are affected", so we would require any of your affected file to analyze the issue. Can you please share the file? You can use acrobat.com to share the file.
    Thanks,
    Vishal

  • Word 2007 = PDF

    Hi,
    I'm french, sorry for my English.
    I have Adobe acrobat pro extensed 9.
    When i generate a PDF file with a WORD, i have a problems.
    In word 2007 :
    In PDF :
    Thank you for your help

    Converting Word (table) to pdf - lines screwed up - googled as far back as 2004.
    BUG STILL exists. HELP/FIX PLEASE?
    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/missing-table-lines-conversion-pdf-t878406.html
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/305508
    Trying to convert any word doc with tables (& shading) to PDF
    - basic table, black borders throughout
    - shaded headings, black outline border
    - shaded subheadings, black outline border
    However when convert to PDF:
    - 'displays' NO top cell border for some/all shaded rows
    - shows diff thickness lines
    - each conversion, diff lines missing/incorrectly sized
    - however converted pdf prints perfectly fine
    Adobe know about the bug, per PRMW's (Paul's) post on 2009-07-15 15:44:34, however only offered a painful time consuming workaround using non-freeware Adobe Pro:
    http://acrobatusers.com/forum/pdf-creation/word-pdf-table-lines-missing-or-faded#comment-7 8139
    - "It is not feasable to edit 200+ tables in the PDF every time the PDF is generated, as we maintain the original in word.
    - "This complete issue seems to have been passed off by Adobe as no problem and that there is a work around. I consider this an unsatisfactory response from a major product supplier.
    Microsoft TechNet & NitroPdf said it's an Adobe issue & to contact Adobe to fix the bug.
    Tried, but proble exists:
    * Word 2010 > File  > Save & Send > Create PDF/XPS Document
    * Word 2010 > Save As > Pdf
    * Word 2010 > Print > PrimoPdf  (even tried properties > advanced > dpi 300/600/2400) > Custom
    * Word 2010 > Print > doPDF v7  (even tried 'high quality images)
    * Word 2010 > Print > PDFCreator
    * Word 2010 > Print > CutePdf Writer      (even worse)
    * Nitro Pdf Reader  > Convert From File > (even worse)
    * www.pdfonline.com > Word to Pdf         (even worse)
    * www.wordtopdf.com > email: Sorry, an unexpected conversion failure occurred when converting your file.
    Software:
    * Word 2010 - tried with .docx & .doc (97 to 2003)
    * Adobe Reader 8.2.6 (freeware), then upgraded to Adobe Reader X 10.0.1 (freeware)
    * GhostScript 9.01 w32 (freeware)
    * CutePdf Writer (freeware)
    * PrimoPdf (freeware)
    * Nitro Pdf Reader 1.4.0.11 (freeware)
    * doPDF 7.2.361 (freeware)
    * PDFCreator 1.2.0 (opensource - www.pdfforge.org)
    Seems to display better at 300%, but lines still not right (even at 2400%), but who views pdf's at this zoom?

  • Importing MS Word into PDF adds extra page with document info

    I am still evaluating Acrobat Pro, including Life Cycle Designer to create Forms, currently testing converting existing forms made in MS Word to PDF. There is someting that I do not know how to resolve is when I import files from MS Word, an extra page with details info about the document is copied as well. It contains info such as number of pages, author, date of creation etc....20 lines of info.
    This becomes akward when inserting the document into an existing pdf...or just create a new form from the Word document....adds the extra page ..
    Is there a setup somewhere that I could modify to not have the extra info? or how do I delete it? I try to select the text but cannot (within life cycle)
    Thank you

    If you are importing into Designer, you should ask in that forum. If in Acrobat, then you might try printing the WORD document to a PDF first and importing the PDF. However, with Acrobat you will not get the form fields that you are preserving with Designer.

  • 10.6.7 - general pdf creation issues?

    I wondered whether anyone else had run into this issue after updating to 10.6.7 when using pdfs created by Preview - perhaps related to the pdf/font issue.
    If it is generally happening, then the 10.6.7 pdf-font issue has an even larger
    impact than previously described:
    1. Open a pdf document in Preview
    2. Select a region and save to clipboard
    3. Save as a new pdf file
    4. Then try importing it as a "Picture" into any of the new Office 2011 apps: Word, PPT, etc.
    This crashes my office 2011 apps (latest version, 14.02) But NOT any earlier version of Office (2008. etc.), which may not do as much pdf checking.
    Before the 10.6.7 upgrade (ie, 10.6.6), this never happened with Office 2011.
    Acrobat complains when opening the Preview-created pdfs about 'missing fonts', so I suspect some sort of pdf creation issue.
    Any fixes (besides the previously suggested one of downgrading to 10.6.6)
    If it's a real bug (not just local to my system), then it's a more far-reaching one than previously described.

    So, 3 different Apple tech support people say they know this problem affects
    "multiple applications, including any that deal with pdf files" but that "no fix is
    currently in the works"
    That is wrong because it only involves OpenType Postscript fonts.
    The only solution offered so far is to "downgrade by doing Archive & Install" and
    then re-applying each Combo Upgrade, starting with 10.6.3 up to 10.6.6.
    You wouldn't have to do that either. That is the point of a Combo update. You only need to apply the one you want. It includes all of the previous updates.

  • InCopy is best for PDF creation...what do you think?

    I use Apple pages 09 export to create PDF documents with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 (mac).  I use these with my clients, and since I am a communicaitons consultant, I want them to stand out.  I have found pages does not do the entire job...I must add things to the PDF in acrobat (such as flash) and pages has bugs (links don't show up in left column of links in adober reader).  So, I am becoming disolutioned with pages to pdf.
    I am very technically oriented and an expert computer user, so I have been thinking about moving to a more roubust word processor to make PDF documents.  I understand Adobe has such word processor (InCopy I think).  I will reserach it, but I am looking for advice from users.  What is the best way to go?
    Does InCopy allow everything to be done in InCopy (and not a 2 stage process of adding things in acrobat).  Are there alternatives to InCopy that I might look at?  Is there anything better for PDF creation?  Print is not a big issue for me, just PDF/electronic documents.
    thanks
    bob

    InCopy doesn't do what you want. InCopy is designed for to create content that will eventually be placed into ID. I could be wrong, but I'd ask in the Incopy forum, not here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/incopy/incopy_general
    To some extent I think you would be better off with InDesign. It is not really a WP, but you can use Pages, TextEdit, Nisus, Mellel or any other WP as a Word Processor and then just place the content into InDesign. Can you use InCopy to place the content into InDesign, sure, but I really think of InCopy as an integrated workflow product for group content creation.

  • Acrobat stops functioning halfway through PDF creation

    I have to convert a very large WORD document (a book, 680 pages including illustrations, tables, index etc.) to PDF. Let me begin by explaining that I've already done this in the past, using Acrobat Professional 5 and Office 2000 Professional; it took ages to create the PDF file, but I was able to do it. At that stage I actually had Acrobat 6, but since it blocked halfway through PDF creation, I went back to Acrobat 5 and managed to create my PDF file.
    I've recently had to revise the document in question, but I now have Office 2007, Acrobat Professional 8.1.2, and a new laptop (Acer Aspire 5105, AMD Turion 64x2, 2.0 GHz, 160GB HDD). I tried converting it to pDF yesterday, but once again found that the program blocked halfway through (while creating Tags; it gets up to 60%, and then just stops functioning). I thought this might have something to do with the sceensaver starting up, or else the automatic saving of the WORD document, but I don't think this is the case.
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be, and how o solve it?
    Mark

    It should convert exactly as long as you have done the editing with the Adobe PDF printer selected. This is a WORD issue. The ability to do the conversion was my concern and tags are likely the issue for such a large document, particularly if you have a lot of graphics. Keep in mind that to create the PDF, a PS file is first created -- that is a format that is not very small in terms of storage and could be huge. Your TEMP folder is typically limited by windows and may need to be emptied to hold this file.
    Optimizing the graphics up front is also good. Using Mike's suggestion to find the problem graphic would be useful, but is hard to do with PDF Maker (I don't think you can select the pages with PDF Maker). Printing to the Adobe PDF printer will check the layout and also the ability to do the conversion. If the latter works, it is then a matter of determining what you need in PDF Maker.
    If you do not need the markup (or wish to add later), then you can save a lot of space by simply printing to the Adobe PDF printer. With PDF Maker, you likely need to go back and review the defaults.

  • From Word to PDF without changing the Number of pages

    When I convert a document of 320 pages from Word 2013 to PDF using Acrobat, the number of pages jump to 331, changing the footnotes, sections...How to fix it? Tx

    To expand on Michael Kazlow's response, the problem isn't caused by Windows, but rather how Microsoft Office applications format their text. The issue isn't only with Word, but also with every other Office application as well. Furthermore, it isn't a matter of whether you create the PDF using the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance, but rather, when you compose the document while the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance is the default/current printer within Word!!!
    These applications format text using font metrics normalized to the resolution of the current output device. Thus, if you are displaying a document in Word and the current printer selected (usually the default printer you have selected in Windows when you start up Word) has a device resolution of 600dpi, the document is formatted with each character's space measured in units of 1/600 of an inch. If you change the current printer or print to a printer that has a different resolution set, Word reformats the document using font metrics based on the new resolution. In the case of the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance, by default, the resolution is 1/1200 of an inch. Typically, more text will fit on a page with long text lines when higher resolution is used and less text will fit on a page with long lines when a lower resolution is used. If your default printer is a high resolution inkjet printer, you may see resolutions as high as 2400 dpi, for example.
    Microsoft Office applications are also known to reformat pages based upon other metrics such as printable area.
    These issues don't just affect PDF creation, but also printing to different devices yielding different line endings and pagination.
    To further complicate matters, when you either Save as PDF using Office's own PDF creation facility or even Save as Adobe PDF using Acrobat's PDFMaker facility (part of Acrobat), Office uses yet a different mechanism to reformat the page, also yielding inconsistencies in line ending and pagination from what you see on the screen and/or in print directly from Word to a particular device. (We don't know exactly what mechanism Microsoft is using in these cases to cause the discrepancies.)
    Users of Office and Adobe have complained to Microsoft about this general behavior for over 20 years and apparently it is not of any priority to Microsoft to resolve this.

  • Trying to convert word to pdf and getting error message using Ver. 7

    I what sent a word doc by a correspondent of mine which I tried to convert to a pdf. I right clicked the doc on my desk top and chose "convert to PDF". It looked as it has all the other times but after it had opened word it came up with an error window/message of "Missing PDFmaker files." "Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?" and then a yes or no button. If I hit no it closes everything if I hit yes it acts like it's installing something and after a while it tells me that the computer needs to be restarted for changes to take affect. I have run it twice now and it doesn't change anything.
    can someone give me any tips on this?
    D

    You did not indicate the version of WORD. If it is WORD 2007, then you can not do this function with AA7. Try opening the file in WORD and printing to the Adobe PDF printer. If that works, then look for the PDF Maker options in WORD (create PDF). If you find them, then try that. If they do not show but the print worked, then you indeed have an issue with PDF Maker - probably either the macro is not activated in WORD or the version of WORD is 2007.
