Small office centralized management (nfs, ldap, etc)

I've setup a small group of workstations and a server running various flavors of linux in our office. The server and a few of the workstations are arch boxes. What I want to do is setup some sort of nfs/ldap management system on the server to centralize logins and user home directories so we can all login to any of the workstations easily and have our home files and settings on all the different machines.
I've done a bit of reading (http://solarblue.net/docs/ldap.htm) and messing around with nfs and ldap, but can't seem to make them work quite right. Has anybody set this up using arch that would be willing to share what they did or point me to a good doc (all the ones I've read so far are for redhat and tough to apply to an arch install)?
Thanks,
Alex

I think I have the client part figured out now. The basic outline of steps is:
1.) pacman -Sy nss_ldap pam_ldap
2.) edit /etc/nss_ldap.conf
3.) edit /etc/nss_pam.conf
4.) add /etc/ldap.secret (with plaintext rootdn password and a blank line at the end, chmod it 600)
5.) edit /etc/pam.d/*   (caution!!! you can kill your login here)
-This part is still a little confusing to me because most of the docs about it are for debian or redhat. Redhat has a neat little utility called authconfig that takes care of everything and debian has everything split over 4 files (as opposed to arch having a ton). I have a working config after browsing forums all day, but I don't feel to confident about it.
6.) edit /etc/nscd
7.) /etc/rc.d/nscd start <-- This is very broken on arch, check this topic: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=nscd
That's it I'll try to do a nicer write-up about it in the next day or two including how I setup the server. I still don't have ssl enabled though, so I'm going to wait until I figure that part out.

  • Small office VoIP system

    Good morning everyone,
I am currently defining the architecture for a very simple VoIP network that is to be installed in a small office (about 70 VoIP extensions). Initially, we don't want to include any special feature, just the internal voice IP service and the ability to make up to 4 simultaneous external phone calls through PSTN.
We are going to acquire a Cisco 2921 Router, the SL-29-UC-K9 Unified Communications licence and a VIC2-4FXO.
I have been reading about ISR G2 licensing, but I am still not sure of fully understanding what we need for this project. My question is, does the UC licence for the Cisco 2921 include the FL-CME licence to use the Call Manager Express functionality? do we need something else? any special license for the FXOs functionality?
    Thank you for your help
    Pablo

Thank you guys for your answers,
Actually, it's my first contact as a developer with VoIP and UC Cisco technology... so I would like to keep it simple at the beginning: just internal voip phone calls and the possibility to ring pstn extensions. Our budget is very limited too... so I need to stick to the hardware that I told you in the previous message: 2921 + fxo card.
As far as I have read, SRST functionality is very useful when you have several nodes, to provide survival to each local node that loses connectivity with a centralized call manager. But in our scenario, with a single node... I think we can give up this functionality.
So, we only have budget to purchase any other license that could be necessary to accomplish this small project. so the key question is: does SL-29-UC-K9 Unified Communications License include Call Manager Express functionality and the ability to use de FXO card to make pstn phone calls as well? because that will be more than enough for us...
    thank you very much
    Pablo

  • Is it mandatory to have Central Manager (CM)

    Dear All,
We are planning to have WAAS solution in our corporate. It is a small setup with 3 sites. We are thinking of using the SRE module in the WAN routers. While going through the documentations a need for additional Central Manager is mentioned. Just wonder is it really required to have it considering a small setup?
    Regards,
    Anoop

    hello Anoop,
It depends on what type of optimization you will require at the small site, for example I am confident that HTTP content, video streaming, basic transport and enterprise license optimizations should still  work without a CM ( I have never done a lab without a CM so I am speaking from my experience)
Please keep in mind that a WAAS system without a CM is not supported!! in addition it will be very difficult to troubleshooting anything without the CM anyways.
The CM performs the role of a centralized point of configuration for multiple WAE's even if they are just 2 or 3 WAE's it is still as important as  it is for a big deployment.
Without a CM, you won't be able to take advantage of CIFS prepositioning, SSL key management, or secure store (WAE disk encryption) and you won't be able to use the nice graphical reporting charts that WAAS CM provides ( to see what exactly is WAAS doing on your network from your small office to your data center or wherever the traffic is going to)
in regards Virtual WAAS ( as refered on the previous comment ) you might want to take a look at the following links:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps11231/index.html
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v431/vwaas/guide/vwaasguide.html
    good luck!

  • WAAS installed without Central Manager. not compressing traffic

    Hi,
I installed 2 SRE modules in 2 ISR G2 router and configure them without Central Manager, but they are not doing compression, Traffic is going to Branch to Head Office but without compression.
My configuration is similar to this link
    http://2and2is5.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/configuring-cisco-waas-on-a-sre/
I want to compress http, exchange and cifs traffic.
I don't have Central Manager, could WAAS works without Central Manager ?
Can anyone help me with that.
    Thanks in Advanced.

    Hi Arslan
WAAS requires a Central Manager however once they are setup it doesn;t technically require one in order to continue to to optimise traffic. If your WAAS environment is setup correctly and is intercepting the traffic http and CIFS should automatically been compressed with LZ compression. WAAS can accelerate Exchange however it depends on how your Exchange environment is setup and whether it is encrypted? If its encrypted via SSL you will need a WAAS Central manager to accelerate it.
To check if you WAE's are running correctly type in "show cms info" on the WAAS and you will probably see your WAE is status is not online:
    WAE2#sh cms info
    Device registration information :
    Device Id                            = 3107921
Device registered as                 = WAAS Application Engine
Current WAAS Central Manager         = ##.##.##.##
Registered with WAAS Central Manager = ##.##.##.##
    Status                               = Online
    Time of last config-sync             = Mon Sep 24 13:18:51 2012
    CMS services information :
    Service cms_ce is running
You can check the accelerator status with the below command:
    WAE2#sh accelerator
Accelerator     Licensed        Config State    Operational State
    cifs            Yes             Enabled         Running
    epm             Yes             Enabled         Running

  • Central management of Antivirus. McAfee AV 6.6?

This may be a bit off topic, but I wanted to get some feedback from Sys admins.
We have an EPO server that does central control and reporting for McAfee (Antivirus and System Compliance) on our windows boxes, and I would like to have some type of central scanning control of our Macs. 2 Questions?
1)Is anyone using McAfee AV 8.6 on on their Macs, and if so, whats your opinion on things like performance (MCAfee tends to use a lot of CPU on windows), and problems, etc. ?
2)Also are there other alternatives that allow for central control?

@Mike: I'd be surprised if you had found that info on your own, it represents about 6 months (on and off) of effort on my part. Because, for the longest time, Symantec did not have that product page up for their Mac SAV product. There's mention of a v.11 release for it, but from what I'm told,
the existing product was updated to be both Intel-native (UB) and 10.5-compatible.
If you go that route, expect to have a struggle getting meaningful info or support. It seems to be that if you don't already have such a contact with them, you'll be hard pressed to find one.
Now then, in my direct experience, Sophos actually has very little impact on system resources,
and in an instance at a small office (10 or so Macs) it also successfully found all Word docs that were infected with a (Windows PC) VB Macro virus, and successfully disinfected them all. It was quick about it, and the documents were still fully usable afterward.

  • Centrally manage all Cisco Switches

I have more than 20 Cisco switches in my office which is basically a soap manufacturing factory. The switches include Cisco 2950, 2960, 3560, 3750 etc. We have routers also which include 2821, 2951 etc. We also have Cisco WLC 2125 and LAP 1262 series. Sometimes all these devices management comes very tough to us.
We need to logon to different devices for troubleshooting/network managment which sometimes becomes very tough to us. So I wonder if there any cisco applications or tools by which we can centrally manage all these devices.
If would be a great help for us if anyone can suggest.

The closest low cost (free) Cisco product to manage most of that would be Cisco Network Assistant (CNA). It'll do fine with your switches and manage at least your 2900 series router.
If I were on a budget I'd use CNA for the switches, add in Cisco Confguration Professional (CCP) for the couple of routers and use the built-in browser-based interface for the WLC (which covers its WAPs as well).
If you want a paid Cisco product to cover it all, you'd have to step up to Cisco Prime Infrastructure at the base licensing level (up to 50 devices). List price for that is about US$5295.
Third party options abound and also range from free open source projects (Nagios, Cacti, RANCID etc.) to full-featured systems such as the SolarWinds products (NPM, NCM, etc.)

  • Best practices for setting up users on a small office network?

    Hello,
I am setting up a small office and am wondering what the best practices/steps are to setup/manage the admin, user logins and sharing privileges for the below setup:
Users: 5 users on new iMacs (x3) and upgraded G4s (x2)
Video Editing Suite: Want to connect a new iMac and a Mac Pro, on an open login (multiple users)
All machines are to be able to connect to the network, peripherals and external hard drive. Also, I would like to setup drop boxes as well to easily share files between the computers (I was thinking of using the external harddrive for this).
    Thank you,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.
For more and detail information, please refer to:

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Setting up a small office network - advice needed

We are to move our small office (3 people) from a shared office environment to our own office space. That has the huge advantage that we´ll finally be Mac-only, but the agreeable disadvantage that there is no longer a networking professional around. And this is where I enter. I now have to find a solution on how to set up the network, and I do not have experience in that field (though I am fairly experienced with OSX).
As of today we have a G5 iMac, a G4 powermac and a G4 iBook. In the not too far future we will be getting a proper G5 powermac as well.
The G4 is used for low key office applications, Word and Mail mostly. The iMac is the workhorse that runs all graphic/video applications. It also is used for presentations once in a while, so that this machine is not always available. The iBook is used for writing and e-mail plus some light-weight field editing.
I would like to find a solution that we could store all important files on one computer, so that it would be easier to make regular back-ups. And everyone could easily access those files.
It would be great if data from iCal and Adress Book could also be stored centrally, such as that addresses are available for everyone, and updated calenders are available for all employees.
As the budget should be as small as possible, I was wondering if we could use the G4 powerbook (867mhz, 1gig memory) to run a sharing service in the background. Then I could also install a second harddisk and use both hdd as a backing-up-raid. Once in a while I would make a backup on a external firewire disk.
Is this a possible solution, or should we rather have one machine dedicated as a server. Would it be sufficient then to use the G4 as that server and buy a MacMini or iMac as the office machine?
Since it is a small network, would I still need an OSX server license, or is the standard OSX enough for this?
iMac G5 20, G4 QS 867mhz, iBook G4, PB 190, and a Pentium that I haven't switched on in months...   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Experienced with technology, just not with networking...

There are two ways to set up a network:
    1 peer-to-peer
    2 client-server
Peer-to-peer is cheaper, but not reliable. Apple supports peer-to-peer in OS X. (In fact, in all versions of the Mac OS since System 7.) You can have up to 10 users connected to any one machine using peer-to-peer. (Warning... if you have more than five users, that machine is going to get slow.) The various peers are used as normal workstations while sharing. You have three peers, and may get one or two more, so you can use peer-to-peer. Just don't overdo it. Your planed usage of a few Word docs and a few graphics files sounds about right.
Under OS X the peers are limited to sharing specific folders only, unless they use 3rd-party software such as SharePoint, which allows the sharing of any and all folders.
It seems that you plan to use the G4 as a 'server' using peer-to-peer. You also seem to be planing to add additional drives, and RAID. I'd get a high end IDE PCI card, or a FireWire card, or a SCSI card, for the G4. Depending on which G4 you have, you can stick up to four hard drives in the case if you go IDE or internal FireWire or SCSI. External SCSI or FireWire drive configuratins are limited only by the drive slots available (7 for low-end SCSI, 15 for high-end SCSI, 63 for FireWIre) and the space available. (And, of course, the budget availanle...) You can get dedicated RAID controllers.
For backup I'd get DVD or tape. Tape holds more and is easier to use, but is expensive (you have no idea how expensive, but I suspect you'll find out) and can be finicky. DVD is a lot cheaper, but it's slow, and someone will have to sit and feed discs into the machine. This will get old really fast. If your backup requirements are modest, DVDs might do, but probably you'll need something else. You could just buy an external hard disk and back up to that...
Apple charges US$500 for OS X Server 10 seat version. (They charge $1000 for the 255-seat version.) OS X Server should run on the G4, and will turn it into a full-fledged server.
Any of the O'Reilly books on OS X Server and/or on Samba should help you get started. O'Reilly's _Using Samba_ has a section devoted specifically to SMB on OS X Server which should be quite helpful.

  • Randomly monitor small office network

Looking for a user-friendly, dummy-proof article on creating a small office network from a total of four Mac's (3 iMacs, one Air), allowing the administrator to randomly monitor without detection the real-time activities taking place on the other two machines. Triple points for iOS monitoring capabilities, as well

    Hello, rjbm_exact.
You definitely need a managed switch and a Cisco Small Business (200 or 300 series) can meet your requirements. You can setup separate VLAN to segregate user access level. Are you also looking at expanding your wireless (guest access)?
Let me know if you need more assistance or e-mail ([email protected]) me directly. Kind regards.

  • Small Office Network Setup Help

    Hi folks,
We are renting a small office in a floor which consists of many offices. The way internet is distributed here is, they have a verizon fios router and a couple of unmanaged switch, from which cables are run to offices for internet. One of the port on a switch is dedicated to our office.
In our office we have 6 computers and a network printer. The computers need to share files with each other and be able to print.
We want to isolate our office network from others. When we use an unmanaged switch, the version router dhcp assigns ip addresses to computers and we are able to access the internet. The verizon local ip is: 192.168.1.xxx. But we can also see computers that are of other offices, which means they can see us.
How do we create a separate network? Say we want to use  IP 192.168.10.XXX or 10.0.0.xxx. We just bought a 24 port managed (L2) switch.
    Thanks

  • How to load a new version in  Central Management Console

HI I am new to  Central Management Console  and need to replace a program there with the new version.
i am not seeing how this is done.
i have gone there and located the current report. but i don't see where you replace it.

Hope you have already got know on how to add new programs to CMC. (CMC->Folders->Manage->Add->Program file->Browse and select the program)
    To replace...
If you are using SAP BO XI R3.x, you can use "Import wizard" or LCM for replacing \ overwriting the existing version of any objects (Programs, Crystal, webi reports etc..,) from one environment to another (Dev-QA, QA-UAT, UAT-Prod).
If you are using SAP BI 4.x, you can use Promotion Management which is integrated within the CMC to replace or overwrite the existing version of any objects from one environemnt to another.
To know more about using Import Wizard - http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-20523
To know more about LCM or Promotion Management - http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir31/en/xi31_LCM_User_en.pdf
Note: If you are using LCM in R3.x or Promotion Management in BI 4.x, you can also utilize the "Version management" to manage your versions to keep track off.

  • Small Office Switch Questions

    Hi Guys,
Have a small office I need to setup with a few requirements.
I need to replace some unmanaged switches with one or two managed devices to better facilitate bandwith and general managment. There will be 5/6 VLANS (VOIP, Users, Wifi, CCTV ect), between 24 and 48 workstations requiring gigabit speeds and around 15 VOIP phones and 5 IP Cameras.
Due to costs, i'm quite happy to go with a 24port 1000base switch and a 48port 10/100base POE switch (as I can bounce lots of devices that don't need 1000 like printers and accesspoints down to the POE switch). I was looking originally at the 3750 series (1000 and 100 and using the stacking ports) but the cost may be a little high.
Used switches are not a real problem (unless anyone can advise on some really good reasons why) so picking up old cat hardware and getting the latest images are a option. Ideally, I want to spend under 1500 USD on something like this, but if it could be sub $1000 that would be great. In terms of the POE device, it needs to be standard POE not Cisco Pre-Standard.
Happy to keep in the same series even if it's older.
I've seen the small business series, but it seems that by the time you spend the money on two switches, you're nearly upto the prices of two used cats.
    Any thoughts on those?
    Thanks.

I was looking originally at the 3750 series (1000 and 100 and using the stacking ports) but the cost may be a little high.
You will no longer be able to purchase FastEthernet 3750 as Cisco has announced the End-of-Sale of the 10/100BaseTx of the 3560 and 3750 since January 2011.  Cisco has also announced the End-of-Sale of the 3560G/E and 3750G/E back in March 2012.
So this leaves you with the 3560X and the 3750X and I can assure you this variety doesn't come cheap at all.
This leaves you with the last remaining stack-capable model, the 2960S.  Like what Paul has said, the 2960S is a "triple speed" variety:  10/100/1000BaseTx.  You can have uplinks of 1 Gbps fibre or 10 Gbps fibre.  You can have "half" PoE or Full PoE.
But what sets the 2960S different from the 3750X (in terms of stacking) is the amount of switches in a stack.  The 3750X can support up to nine but the 2960S can support up to four.  This factor was set deliberately to prevent potential users to choose the cheaper 2960S instead of the 3750X.

  • 1 small office + 2 companies + shared resources = ? (SG300, SA520, WAP2000)

I need to configure a network in 1 small office space that segregates 2 company domains but allows them to share an Internet connection, a WAP, a couple of printers, and a non-Cisco VoIP phone system. And, it needs to provide guest access to the internet and printers via wireless. I have a SG300-28P, an SA520W, and a WAP2000 to make it all happen. Here's the plan below. Will this work? Is there a better approach that uses the available equipment? Thanks in advance!!!
    VLANs:
    VLAN 1 - default, mgmt vlan, 192.168.1.0
    VLAN 10 - CompanyA-Data, 192.168.10.0
    VLAN 20 - CompanyB-Data, 192.168.20.0
    VLAN 30 - Guest, 192.168.30.0
    VLAN 50 - Printers, 192.168.50.0
    VLAN 100 - Internet, 192.168.100.0
    VLAN 200 - Voice, 192.168.200.0
    Device IPs:
    SG300 = 192.168.1.254
    SA520 = 192.168.1.1
    WAP2000 = 192.168.1.245
    DHCP Servers:
    VLAN 10 = SBS-A
    VLAN 20 = SBS-B
    VLANs 30,50,200 = SA520
    VLAN 1,200 = NO DHCP
    Wireless:
SA520 is primary, WAP2000 is repeater (will it repeat multiple SSIDs???)
    SSIDA - VLAN10
    SSIDB - VLAN20
    SSID-Guest - VLAN30
    Switch Ports:
    SG300:
    1 = trunk, VLAN 1
    2-6, 25 = access, VLAN 10
    7-12, 26 = access, VLAN 20
13 = access, VLAN 30 (unmanaged switch providing additional ports)
14 = access, VLAN 50 (unmanaged switch providing additional ports)
    15-23 = access, VLAN 200
    24 = trunk, VLANs 10, 20, 30 (connect to WAP2000)
    27 = unallocated
    28 = trunk, all VLANs (connect to SA520 p4)
    SA520:
    1-3 = access VLAN 1
    4 = trunk all VLANs (connect to SG300 p28)
    Routing:
SG300 in L2 mode using SA520 as router on a stick??
