So what about my MBP with an nVidia chip?

Now I may be beating a dead horse here; however, I think the question must be lurking in a great deal of our minds at this point with regards to the nVidia graphics cards in our MBPs. Since nVidia announced that "significant quantities" of their GPUs were defective in the 8400/8600m model line, manufacturers such as: Hewlitt-Packard, and Dell have addressed their concerned consumers by extending their warranty on their products in accordance to which models are affected by the defective chips. I myself work in a retail store, and have had to deal with these customer's concerns with regards to what will happen to "their" laptop, I am wondering what I should be telling my Mac customers... and more importantly, what should I be telling myself!
I purchased my MBP at the end of April of this year, and received it in the beginning of May. I have read online that many of the issues were fixed around that time; however, I still concerned that the computer I diligently saved up for a year to purchase will have the same Achilles heel as my Toshiba A70 purchased back in 2004 (a defective nVidia GPU with no re-call). I am suddenly fondly reminded of a scene in the movie Fight Club, where Edward Norton describes the process that a manufacturer goes through before determining whether or not to issue a recall.
I'm just really wanting to know when Apple is going to address their customers in regards to this well publicized and well known issue? I currently to this date have yet to have a customer come in and specifically refer to a graphics problem with their MBP since they have been going with the 8400/8600m series GPUs; however, I'm concerned what is on my desk is a ticking time-bomb.

Both HP and Dell have limited warranty enhancements for this issue. In the case of HP, it extends the warranty to 2 years from the date of purchase, or 90 days after repair (whichever is longer). For Dell, its (quote) 'we plan to add 12 months of coverage for this issue to the existing limited warranty up to 60 months from the date of purchase'. I'm not actually sure what that means; on the one hand, it sounds like they're just adding an extra year of coverage (similar to HP), and on the other, it sounds like they'll fix it if you have the GPU problem any time up to 60 months after the purchase (which I find hard to believe). I'm wondering it that's actually supposed to be 60 days instead...

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • HT1338 what about the problems with the trojan virus is that a problem for my mac as well?

What about the problems with the Trojan virus will this be a problem also for me using Mac

    What Trojan?
If you're referring to the DNS Changer Trojan, it's highly unlikely you're affected. The actual distribution of the trojan was stopped several years ago and the perpertrators jailed.
The FBI has been maintaining the servers used by the trojan for the last 5 years in order to give affected systems time to be purged. They will finally shut them down on Monday.
    Ensure that your router and the Mac's network settings are set for the DNS addresses of your ISP, or if you're not sure what they should be, change them to Open DNS using the IP addresses;

  • ICloud Drive, what about sharing contacts with my older iOS devices?

Hi folks, I have finally upgraded my Macbook Pro to Yosemite and my iPhone 5S to iOS 8 and Monday will be the promising iOS 8.1.
During the process I have been offered to also update my iCloud account to iCloud Drive.
Sounds cool and necessary to benefit from a few extra features however I still own and use a iPhone 3GS and another iPhone 4.
It's clear that with iCloud Drive I won't be able to share documents among those devices; I can live with that but what about my contacts, calendars and Safari bookmarks not to mention Photos and iTunes Match, would that be the end of it or would those later services still be shared among older and newer devices?
I can't see it clearly stated among iCloud Drive specs and now I am hesitating with the update..
    P

Hi randers4, your explanation convinced me and I have made the plunge and upgraded to iCloud Drive.
It works as you explained, all other services such as Safari Bookmarks, Reminders, Contacts and keep syncing data among them. Nice.
It will be interesting however, how custom folders and files, will share among different users.
Haven't found much documentation on that either but suspect the mechanism won't be as refined as in DropBox.
For instance: as far as I can see, I can't create/copy a link to one specific folder I have created but have to use either Mail, Messages, or one of the SocialMedia I have registered on the Mac.
But perhaps I should start a new topic on this
    Thanks and regards

  • We have a MBP with the NVIDIA known issue--purchased in August 2007. Is there any course of action for us?

    Hello!
Our daughter's MBP was purchased in August 2007.  It died over the weekend and the diagnosis is this known issue. Apparently Apple is fixing these computers up to four years out from purchase.  We are a few months shy of five years. The computer is at an Apple certified repair center but not at an Apple store. Do you think there is any course of action we can take for Apple to fix this? I thought I'd ask before just giving up.
We are an Apple family---two iMacs, two (soon to be three as we have another graduate) MBPs, iPad, multiple iPods, 5 iPhones, etc.  I don't suppose there is anyway to play on Apple's sympathies but thought I'd ask for advice!
    Thanks for any advice/help!
    DeLynn

My 15" 2007 has the same issue, and what's especially alarming is I brought the machine to the Apple Store to test for this issue before the 4 year deadline was over and they said my machine wasn't part of the same batch.
However, I'm experiencing the same video distortion issues as described by others who have it. Definitely narrowed it down to the video chip, even a electronic specialist friend of mine says it's the video.
It's a shame because everything else, except the weak keyboards Apple seems to enjoy creating, works perfectly on it. I could replace the keyboard and sell the machine for $650, but now I'll have to scrap it out for parts.
Another thing, is the grill exiting the machine where the fans are blocks dust on the inside!, which is totally stupid, dust should be blocked from entering the machine on the outside, where one can wipe it off and improve air flow.
Removing the fans to clean the grills violates one's AppleCare/warranty.
Don't get me started about them denying security updates for 10.5 uses since July 2011.
Intel 10.5 got a mid May update, only because there is a 600,000 strong Mac botnet that they acted.
Apple is good at getting customers, not good at keeping them.

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro won't start up (Nvidia Chip?)

Even though over the last 4 hours I have read many threads on this, I thought I would start a new one just incase as my particular issue didn't start the same as the others
I sould start with explaining what happened…
In OsX Lion I was having some problems with Launchpad so I decided to quit the process in Activity Monitor in order to restart the feature (admittedly this may not be the correct way to do this) then almost immediately after I clicked, the screen went a kind grey/green colour and the computer didn't respond to anything at all.    I then preformed a force "shut down" on my mac.  Unfortunately my machine would not start up again at all.
I have tried all the tricks given in the many threads on this and will be taking my laptop to an expert in the New Year but in the meantime it would be great if anyone had any suggestions or advice?!
    Thanks in advance.

Here is how my situation stands as of now (if anyone cares)…
I need to replace the logic board entirely.  As it turns out the problem does not lie with the Nvidia chip but with an electrical fault somewhere else on the board.  Its frustrating as **** (and expensive) but instead of getting the repairs done I bought a brand new 13" MBP yesterday.   It is very nice so every cloud and all that…
I hate to tell you this but if the computer will not boot Apple will tell you it is not the video chip. That is becasue without the system starting Apple can not run any diagnostics on it and in trurn can not go back to NVidia for the cost of some of the repairs.
It very well may of been the video chip that caused the Ligic board failure but you will never get Apple to admit it.
Good luck with your new MBP.

I want to use a video projector with powerpoint can I use my mac to drive it- and what about sound?

    Hi Scott,
You should be able to. If the projector has a speaker with acceptable sound, that's one option, otherwise powered speakers or a surround system.
What connections does the projector have?
Exactly which MBP do you have?

  • Macbook Pro with Retina Display gets update? what about us?

I mean... What about us... the loyal customers who bought the Macbook at its original price and added upgrade when we could've waited for this new price and the ram update and processor update... no price change? Is Apple going to somehow "payback" the people who basically paid more for the same thing? I don't know why I'd expect this but it certainly would be nice to give us something... Apple just ripped me off... could've waited and saved about $500?

I totally feel you! Also bought my 13" MBP Retina very recently - do not even have it for 6 weeks! And I do understand and know that pricedrops happen a lot in the high-tech industry.. over a longer period of time! The 13" Retina has been out for how long..? Not even 4 full months! This is ridiculous! I call this *bleeping* your (loyal) early adapters. And Apple of all companies in this industry should know how important these (loyal) customers are.
It's not like you just bought an iPhone 4s which is already on the market for 8 months and then the iPhone 5 is presented for the same price. And that would be to expected because you know every year this is going to happen. No, this is like buying an €1800 MacBook Pro Retina 13" which is just brand new on the market for not even 4 months and then see your exact same precious product DROPS in price with €250! That is a whole different story and no one could have expected this move from Apple. It's like a stab in the back!

  • Scrambled display video on MBP with NVIDIA GT 300 card

Hi; I'm posting this on the MBP discussion group (mistakenly posted it on the MacBook group; thanks to frederic1943 for pointing this out)  was wondering if anyone was having this same problem.  I have a 15-inch MBP with i7 processor (I believe it is mid-2010), running Mac OS X 10.6.7, that has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card in addition to the Intel graphics card.  I have upgraded the physical RAM to the maximum 8GB.
I have recently been experiencing a problem in using Firefox 4.0.1 in which one or both of 2 things happens:  1) when I open a new window or tab in Firefox, the window is totally black; and/or 2) the display becomes scrambled and I can no longer make out the outlines of windows in Firefox.  Sometimes a black page will open normally if I refresh the screen with cmd-R (sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries), and sometimes the scrambled screen will return to normal appearance if I click on the Menu bar and slide the cursor left and right; sometimes I can then grab a window handle and "wipe" the screen clear of the scrambled video so it is readable again.
I will admit that I have had quite a few windows open in Firefox when this has happened, so I suspect I may be stressing the video RAM.  However, I wanted to see there are other explanations for this problem.
I have read about similar-sounding problems with earlier MBPs using the 8600 graphics card, but not with the one I have.  I also saw some posts about similar-sounding problems with Safari that did not occur with Firefox; however, I'm having the problem in Firefox.  I haven't tried Safari to see if I would have the same problem.  I've run TechTool which did not find any problems, and also ran the Cron scripts (all 3) using Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, but am still having the problem.  I have over 800MB of system RAM free (although I realize it may be the video RAM that is limiting here).  I
Any ideas or similar experiences?  Any feedback (other than closing some windows, which I have been doing, and am still having the problem) would be most helpful.
    Thanks, - Klingon725

having too many tabs open isnt the issue here, i would love to answer you, but i work for AMD, so i rarely get in touch with nvidia gpus but u should try booting in safe mdoe first, and running the apple hardware test will be a good idea

  • MBP with a dead Nvidia GPU- possible workaround?

I am one of these who have a MacBook Pro with a dead NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip. Other than that it functions perfectly. I'm pass the warentee and apparently even that replaced the motherboard with another with the same chip on it (no pin-for-pin replacement ever to be made) so will die again sooner or later (mine took four and a half years). I can still connect to mine via screen sharing, the onboard Intel graphics work but don't connect through the display connector to the outer world. I had an idea of something to try and wonder if anyone out there have tried it yet. There are Expresscard/32 cards out there to add monitors to the MBP. They have their own GPUs and connectors (DVI and SVGA). Has anyone tried these out on a MBP with a dead NVIDIA chipset? I can get them on Amazon for $70 or so but would rather not gamble at this stage but may try soon. The MBP is not my primary machine but it is a drag that it can only be used via screen sharing.
    -James

I found this article on iFixit :
    http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/9045/MBP+A1226+Logic+Board+last+resort+fix+fo r+nVidia+video+chip
What the did was intentionally overheat the MBP while it is upside down and this re-solders the chip back in place. Basically running som graphics intense program while it's wrapped in a blanket. Many sucess stories. I will try this when I get the nerve (I mean it works now via shared screens so it may break it further).

  • Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT is defective on Dell laptops; what about Macs?

    http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/nvidiageforce_8600m_gt_is_defective_on_dell_laptops_what_aboutmacs/
Dell will offer 12-month limited warranty enhancement to all worldwide customers of 15 laptops with defective Nvidia GPUs. These Dell laptops use nine models of graphic processor units, and only one of them is also used on MacBook Pro models (15 and 17 inch models), sold from mid-2007 to now.
It’s the GeForce 8600M GT. What is Apple doing for these customers, and why Nvidia doesn’t say the name of all defective models?

This is a user to user forum. No one here works for Apple so you will not get an answer. You can try to contact Apple directly.

The service provides a "video" calibration, not audio.
Well in that website link I provided and in the "First Glimpse" magazine they give you at the store, page 17, says they offer more than what you said:
