Software update seems to have killed my iBook

I installed the three new updates today (Safari, security and Airport updates) on both my machines. The iMac is still working fine but the iBook refuses to restart. It just hangs on the grey "spinning gear" screen. I have managed to start up from the Leopard disc and repair the HD. I also tried repairing permissions on the HD while in that state but that also hung for ages with no progress. I can't start in safe mode either.
1. Is it just me with a problem or are other Macs (especially iBook G4s) affected by these updates?
2. What can I do to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

For blingkerching and chrisram90:
If you put your Leopard DVD into the drive and then power up while holding c (hold it until the spinning gear and grey Apple logo appears), you will then go into the OSX installer on the disk. If you choose to install and select "archive and install" when prompted (when I did it this was the suggested option as I was replacing a newer version of OSX) it will reinstall OSX and restore all your settings, applications, data etc. Well, it worked that way for me anyway. I also backed up onto my iMac beforehand (using the iBook in target disk mode) in case it all went wrong but as it worked out I didn't need the backup after all.
The iBook is now working perfectly as if nothing had ever happened.
Just be aware that when reinstalling, the estimated time will tick down steadily then the last minute will actually take ages (mine took about 20 minutes!) - this is because that's when it's restoring all your stuff. Don't be alarmed that it seems to be hanging just as it's about to finish. It will get there eventually!
I hope this is helpful.

  • Latest imac software update seems to have messed up disk utility

I just performed (as I always do) the latest apple software update that just popped up on my screen. I did the upgrade (for itunes and quicktime) on both my 1.25 GHz G4 imac (system 10.3.9) and my 10.7 GHz G4 (system 10.3.9).
For both machines I ran disk utility within 15 minutes of the upgrade, having performed no other operations. In both cases, Disk utility failed, giving me the message: "disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and launch disk utility."
Relaunch was not effective. I ran disk warrior on both computers and it did not help.
Any clues? Seems like the latest updates must have done something crazy to the software.
    Thanks!

  • Software update seems to have hung before it even started

I'm fairly new to owning a Mac (newer than an SE) and I a having a problem with Software Update. I can't tell if the system is supposed to work this way (which would be a terrible user experience) or if my system is really screwed.
Software Update always tries to get me to install updates at bad times so I had several updates that were overdue. They were marked as downloaded but they required a restart, so I never did the installation. Today, I remembered to go to software update to update the system. There were 11 updates. I had them all selected and I hit the button to install all 11 items.
My computer has been mostly unresponsive since then. It's been 2 hours. No progress bar has appeared. No configuration message has appeared. The only thing that has happened is that the icon that appears above software update has changed to the swirly rainbow "I'm working" icon.
I tried opening firefox. Nothing happened. I tried opening the activity monitor. The icon now appears in the shortcut bar but the activity monitor never came up. I tried opening the system profiler-- again, the icon now appears in the shortcut bar but nothing ever came up. I can't even scroll up in system update to see which 11 updates I'm installing; I can only see the 8 that were visible when I hit the start button. I even went to "About this mac" and clicked "more info" and the only thing that happened is that the "about this mac" screen disappeared.
The two possibilities seem to be that my system is working as expected (which would, as I said, be a horrible user experience), or that the system is hung.
I am extremely reluctant to shut the computer down in the middle of an update because it could corrupt the system but it's been 2 hours and I haven't gotten a progress bar or a single progress message. I really don't want to do that if this is expected behavior. On the other hand, my computer has been completely unusable for 2 hours and that seems like a ridiculous amount of time to install software that was already downloaded.
The 8 software updates that I can see in the list are:
    iDVD Update 7.0.3
    Digital Camera Raw Compatib... 2.5
    iLife Support
    AirPort Client Update 2009-001 1.0
    Front Row Update 2.1.7
    Safari 3.2.1
    Java for Max OS X 10.5 Update 3 1.0
    Security Update 2009-001 1.0
What's worse is that all of my Mac OSX using friends are asleep so I can't find out from them if this is expected behavior.
Please advise. I don't know if I should try to hard reboot or let it keep trying.

Do you have your data backed up?
    Press this key combination: Commandoptionesc
Since Software update has jammed on you, that might not do anything. What it should do is bring up the "Force Quit" window. If the window doesn't show up within...15 minutes, it probably isn't going to make an appearance.
If you press the power button once, do you get the option to shut down?
If none of that works, hold the power button down till the computer powers off. After that, try booting in Safe Mode (hold the Shift key while booting) and see if the computer boots okay. If so, try booting normally. If a normal boot goes without issues, you can try updating using Software Update again--but do only 1 update at a time and see if it works. If not, let us know and we'll do more troubleshooting.
If the computer won't boot into Safe Mode, try repairing the disk using Disk Utility from the Install DVDs you got with your Mac. Insert Install Disc 1 and reboot the computer while holding down the C key. When the language menu appears, hit enter. Move your cursor to the top portion of the screen--some menus should appear. Choose Utilities, then *Disk Utility*. Highlight your drive's icon in the left-hand column and click the *repair disk* button. If anything can't be repaired, post the complete error here.
Goodness, that's a lot to read. Best of luck to you!

  • Software Update seems to have changed some settings

I recently did a software update on my mac. When I got home later that day I could no longer connect to my ethernet PPPOE connection. When I went to my system preferences and clicked on network, which then opens up the network window that shows you the status of your connection. As soon as this window opens a panel shows up that says, "Your network settings have been changed by another application". No matter how many times I click "OK" the panel keeps flipping down from the top of the window and will not let me proceed.... Any suggestions? If it is unclear what I mean, I have posted a link to a screen shot of what I am trying to explain with words.

  • Quicktime Update Seems to Have Killed iChat for Many People

I keep seeing the same problem from so many people after the latest Quicktime update...
Everyone tries the 443 port setting, the Quicktime/Streaming speed setting, Internet sharing setting, etc. but something is definitely wrong, because I suddenly have two friends who now can't video when it was working fine before the update. And neither is using a router, so it removes all the potential router setting issues.
There seems to be many people on this board with the same issue.
BTW, the Apple "genius" actually suggested it was probably the camera that was broken, after they walked my friend through all the standard settings (the camera works fine). But I'm not going to bring that up because I'm reading A New Earth and that's just my own ego talking.
ANYWAY -- Ralph Johns? You've been dealing with this a lot - doesn't it seem like more than a coincidence that all these iChat issues keep recurring? Or am I insane?

It is more likely the Time Machine and Airport update than Quicktime.
This update changes the OS level although it still calls itself 10.5.2 it can not be "repaired" by installing the Combo version over the top. (you get and error message that the Installer and OS don't suit each other)

  • Safari 4.1 Update seems to have killed my computer

Hey! I really hope someone can help.
I got the update notice for Safari 4.1 on my OS X 10.4.11 and updated. Now, Safari works really well, it's the rest of my computer that won't function. I've repaired disk permissions, and verified disk, both worked (no problems), but I cannot, cannot, cannot get into Finder, or most other programs. I can access System Preferences which, along with Disk Utility, I have in my Dock. One more symptom: when I do restart my computer, the top task bar does not appear until I open a program (Safari, Disk Utility, or System Preferences) and even after the program is closed, the task bar shows the last program, instead of the Finder bar.
Any suggestions shy of re-installing would be lovely. But, I'm suspecting a full re-install is necessary at this point...

    HI,
    Shy of reinstalling..
    Try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
It takes a little longer to boot into Safe Mode just so you know. Once you are in Safe Mode go to the Apple Menu/Restart.
Safe Mode can fix some glitches if Disk Utility couldn't find any errors on the startup disk.
While you are in Safe Mode, check for available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
*Another thing to check in Safe Mode is startup items*. Open System Preferences/Accounts - Login Items. If you have any apps listed, there delete them, then restart from the Apple Menu.

  • Latest update seems to have killed my airport extreme

Did this happen to anyone else? I updated the firmware for my Airport Extreme on the 10th of July. I messed around with it for a day but it hasn't worked since the firmware upgrade. No matter what I do it can't see the internet. I have tried every possible reset, settings, etc. I can't get an appointment at a Genius bar because of the phone launch and this is becoming really annoying. Right now I'm using Ethernet and its fine, but I have lost all mobility and its the only computer in the house with internet at this point. Any ideas?

    Thank you for your response!
I tried the Safe Boot and it didn't work. (Except I did see the purple-spacey background at the log-in screen, which felt like a bit of an improvement)
I'm trying to repair disk permissions, but I'm not sure if it's doing anything or if it's just frozen. Does that usually take awhile?
Right now I'm just trying to get as much of my important stuff onto my harddrive as possible and then re-install the OS.
A bit of a different question, but this is my first Mac and it's been a nightmare, and any other Mac owner says that the problems I've been having with it aren't typical (freezes a lot, won't eject disks, won't wake up sometimes, runs really slowly when I change the resolution, runs pretty slowly if I have a few programs open, and now this), so if anyone else has gotten a dud Mac before, did you find that reformatting it helped, or did you have to take it to the Apple store and get it fixed?

    Hi
Thanks but I have tried doing the above - when I said 7 times I was modest, its more like 15 times.
And I am referring to the 5.1 software update. I dont have wifi so I guess I will have to try that seeing that my husband also has the same problem - he has also tried downloading several times. It always times out en says that the connection is lost but yet there are always an internet connection and a decent signal once it stopped. Think it said error 32052 or something!
I am disappointed because the update includes inprovement on the battery life - did you guys notice any difference?

  • Illustrator crashing after 16.0.1update, 16.0.2 update seems to have fixed it

I am running win7 with latest updates, running Illustrator (64-bit) from CS6 Web and Design Premium Suite.
Illustrator crashed 6 times this week after installing the updates from the end of last week (update 16.0.1). The updates that were released today seem to have fixed it, although I cannot absolutely confirm this.
I have spent the past hour trying to break the software doing the same tasks that caused crashes earlier this week, and then far more extreme tasks then I would ever actually do or need to do, and have not been able to recreate the same crash problems.
I have been using Illustrator for nearly 15 years, it's been very rare that I've ever experienced an illustrator crash like what was happening after the 16.0.1 update. I didn't have time to troubleshoot the issue until today, fortunately the 16.0.2 update seems to have resolved the issue. If the issue returns I will follow up with another post - it's rare though that I find an article that says "I've had this problem, but it looks like you fixed it". Thank you Adobe for the fix.

my apps still dont work =[
new ones i download work but the old ones dont!!
how do i fix this? i dont want to uninstall every single app
and i have tris.. how can i re-download that?! i cant if i take it off
anyone know how to make my old apps work?

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?

What version of iTunes are you using?  The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

  • I seem to have lost the iBooks icon from my iPad.  When being prompted to open a document it asks if I wish to open in iBooks and can see the "books" there.  Any ideas on how to restore the iBooks icon?

I seem to have lost the iBooks icon - any ideas?

You've checked all your homescreens and app folders for it, and tried searching for it via the iPad's spotlight search screen (swipe your first homescreen to the right) ? There is a maximum of 11 homescreens after which apps are only accessible via the spotlight search scree.
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find it after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. You could also do Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout which will re-arrange your apps and might make it easier to find.

As Retired Engineer indicated, you will need to install Snow Leopard first.  After you install Snow Leopard, you need to go into Software Update and perform the updates.  10.6.6 will install the App Store.  You should continue to update to 10.6.8 before purchasing and installing Lion from the App Store.
Be sure your machine meets the minimum requirements.  Basically, any Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor or later and at least 2GB of RAM (but 4 is highly recommended).  If you have a first generation MacBook Pro with a Core Duo, you will not be able to upgrade to Lion.

  • 10.6.2 combined update seems to have no effect

    Hello all,
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.0) from Leopard (10.5.8) and everything looked pretty good. However, I've tried to install the "10.6.2 combined update" through Software Update two times now and it doesn't seem to have worked either time. I get no error message, but after my computer restarts the "About This Mac" window still shows a system version of 10.6. Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

yes, it is if you are upgrading directly from 10.6. that's exactly what the OP got via software update.
