[solve] change desktop wallpaper!

hello,
im using openbox and i added my .fehbg to my autostart file in the openbox folder. i had the problem, that some other instance is changing the bnackground after the autostart file, so my preferred picture only stayed for 1 second. for now i solved this by adding a sleep function, so that the execution of ~/.fehbg is after the influence of the other instance. but id like to solve this in a wy, that doesnt make my desktop background jump around at the startup!

  • New Macbook Pro Retina keeps changing desktop wallpaper

    Every time i turn on my macbook the desktop wallpaper has resets to its original wallpaper that it uses when you turn on the mac when you first buy it. I have tried changing it to one of the provided wallpapers in the system preferences and ones from my iPhoto but it still changes back to the default wallpaper when i turn it off and on.
    Its a brand new macbook pro with retina display, I've only had it 2 weeks. Does anyone now how to fix this or is it a fault with the mac?
    Thank you

    Hi all,
    I have had this same issue with OS X Lion and it continued on to OS X Mountain Lion as well. I have had the wallpaper switching on me to the default solid blue color whenever I restarted (every month or so) and when switching between users (every other day or so). So this issue was very frustrating having to go back in and reset the wallpaper to my preference whenever I switched to either user. I found a solution that has been working for me for several restarts and several switching of users now:
    First, I took some of your advice by locating all of my wallpapers into a 'Wallpaper' folder located in each user's 'Documents' directory. I copied to same wallpapers to each user so both user's have the same wallpapers to choose from.
    Then, I installed the latest stable version of 'OnyX' (freeware software). I used OnyX on both user accounts to run through practically all the settings to clean up the entire Mac (Mac Mini, mid 2011) including: Verify [S.M.A.R.T. Status, Structure of volume, and Preferences], Maintenance [Permissions], Cleaning [System cache, User cache, Internet cache, Fonts cache, Log cache, Misc. cache]. I generally left the default checked boxes alone and didn't change any settings and Executed the program to run as default.
    After running OnyX, I re-set my wallpapers for each user and went ahead and tested the restarting of the computer and switching back and forth between users. It was very easy to duplicate the bug previously, but now I could not get the wallpaper to switch back to the default blue as before. Everything seems stable with my wallpaper selection now.
    Hope this helps someone. Thanks everyone for your input too.
    As a side note, my Mac is running much smoother and quicker now too.  =)

  • Cannot change desktop wallpaper

    All of a sudden I am unable to change my wallpaper without re-starting OSX. I am running two monitors using a mini DVI to DVI cable. I have tried to change the wallpaper without the other monitor turned on, and even plugged in. I cannot change the wallpaper on either monitor with restarting.
    I have in the past been able to do this with just my iMac and with both my iMac and secondary monitor hooked up.
    I am new to macs and I have no idea on what to do except restart every time I wish to change my wallpaper
    Thanks in advance

  • Using SCCM Compliance Settings to Change Desktop Wallpaper

    Hi,
    I need to use the SCCM compliance settings to change the existing wallpaper to a new one.
    If yes, do we have to copy the new image locally on the machines, can this be done using compliance ?
    If not, how could we use the network location to do this?
    I know the registry key to change this already.

    I can give you some pointers, but you have to create the script yourself.
    Basically your discovery script has to verify if the registry key exists, if it's set correctly and if the wallpaper is available locally. If either one of them is not true your it has to return a non compliant message. After that you do the same for your
    remediation script, but then instead of returning a non compliant message you fix the settings that are not correct.

  • Wallpaper not showing up in "Change Desktop Background" window

    I just noticed an odd issue today on my Mac Pro. When browsing the built-in wallpaper folders (Nature, Plants, etc) in the Change Desktop Background window they are empty. My "Pictures Folder" one shows all the images correctly as well as browsing the ones from iPhoto. (I also have Aperture 2.1.2 installed but no projects yet so that part is empty.)
    I performed a permissions repair, checked that the actual files were there in /Library and removed the com.apple.desktop.plist pref's file. After doing that all the pictures showed up again UNTIL I browsed around the picture folders in the Change Desktop Background window then they stopped showing again.
    Could something in my Pictures Folder be causing the issue? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    -Jim

    Thanks for clarifying. I don't do right or left click, but occasionally do CONTROL-click and doing that brings up the contextual menu item "change desktop background" which leads to the Desktop prefPane. Now, why you're having issues, I have no idea. However, I suggest creating a new admin user account, logging into it, and seeing if changing the desktop picture works there.

  • [SOLVED] Changing Gnome 3 Lockscreen Wallpaper

    Is there a way to change the gnome 3 lockscreen wallpaper? I would like my wallpaper to be consistent through GDM, my desktop, and the lock screen, but so far I have only managed to change it for GDM and my desktop. I tried searching the forums and google and it seems that the only answers I could find applied only to gnome 2.
    If anyone could tell me how to change the lock screen wallpaper or point me in a direction where I might find the answer it would be appreciated. Thank you.

    In /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/backgrounds, there is a adwaita.xml file that controls the dynamic wallpaper change for the desktop and lock screen, as well as the jpg's used. I just simply replaced the morning, bright-day, and good night jpg's with my desktop background. There is probably a better way, but for now that's how I kept my desktop wallpaper persistent.

    ''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

  • Should I change the Desktop Wallpaper to avoid pixel burning?

    Hi there.
    I noticed that my old 30-inch Cinema Display had pixel burning becasue I had the same Desktop Wallpaper all the time, now I have a Thunderbolt Display and I want to avoid this to happen.
    Should I setup the desktop wallpaper to change every x amount of time? or is it just my imagination and anyway the pixels just dim and burn with the years?
    Thanks!

    I don't know what Apple says but I say YES.
    I change my desktop wallpaper every few days because of this.
    I never expierenced pixel burning btw but it's better to be safe then sorry right?

  • Desktop wallpaper won't stay changed

    I have had this issue since day one with this macbook pro.
    I change the desktop background following the directions and no matter what I do after I shut down and use it again it just goes to a blank blue screen.
    When i look at the desktop settings there is my picture like it should be but the macbook is not acting right.
    This is really frustrating me. Its seems like a simple thing but the macbook pro wont do it.
    What in the world can i do?

    I had the same issue for the past couple weeks and I tried a few suggestions I was able to find on the Internet but no luck.  I decided to go into iPhoto and find the images I wanted to use for the desktop wallpaper and while doing so, I messed around with the menu feature which allows you to set images as your desktop.
    After I got tired of tinkering around in iPhoto, I exited all programs, then re-started.  The image I switched to before the re-start was still present.  I re-booted next.  The image stayed.  Since then, I've switched wallpapers a few times and they all stay like they're supposed to after a re-boot.
    I don't know what I did to 'fix' the problem but I was able to muck around in iPhoto for about 5 minutes before I got bored and re-started.  Maybe this is something you could try?
    I wish I knew what the problem was.  I didn't delete any files but I did have to re-build the Events image folder in iPhoto yesterday when I tried to fix the problem.  I had inadvertently removed all iPhoto images not knowing that iPhoto has some sort of interaction with desktop image settings.  I'm sure an Apple developer would be able to figure out what's happening but it's not obvious to me.

  • SCCM Application to change user desktop wallpaper

    Hi,
    Recently, I installed an application thru SCCM which changes the user desktop wallpaper to a custom JPEG file. I tested it on few machines and when I log in to the machines, I could see the application in Software Center and after it gets installed, the
    registry value at "HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper" also got updated with the JPEG file as well. But when a different user logs into the same machine, he can see the application being under installed software in Software Center and also
    the registry value being updated as well, but the wallpaper isn't getting changed on his desktop, even after he logoff/logon and do a machine restart. I verified that there are no GPO that have any restrictions on these machines/users. The application has
    the below vbscript code and it's set to "Install for User" setting.
    Thanks.
    Program code:
    Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001
    strComputer = "."
    Dim WshShell
    Dim Fso
    Dim Directory
    Dim Wallpaper
    Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set objReg = GetObject("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\default:StdRegProv")
    Directory = WshShell.CurrentDirectory
    Wallpaper = fso.BuildPath(Directory, "abc.jpg")
    strKeyPath = "Control Panel\Desktop"
    ValueName = "Wallpaper"
    objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, Wallpaper
    NM

    I didn't say it wasn't good to install per-user, just that you are counting on the wallpaper reference to ccmcache which is what's bad. Thus, you should copy that to a common location as pointed out. No, it doesn't automatically get applied if copied to
    Windows\Web\Wallpaper, but it will be available for all.
    Typically, if you want to force the wallpaper, you would use a group policy. There's no other direct way to apply a user based setting to every existing user on a system though. It is possible, just not straight-forward.

  • My desktop wallpaper changes on its own, without my authorization

    I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro. I woke up this morning at 9:30 a.m., CT, powered on my computer, and noticed that my desktop wallpaper had changed from a .jpg file that I had downloaded to one of the stock images in the OS X Desktop Wallpapers folder. This happens to me at least once a month. Has anyone else experienced this?

    This is still happening. Can anyone tell me how I can pinpoint which app or process or website is placing this file in the Application Support folder of the Library?

  • [Solved]Cron - feh wallpaper changer

    I tried the following script from the feh wiki page to change my wallpaper:
    #!/bin/sh
    WALLPAPERS="/mnt/path/to/wallpapers"
    ALIST=( `ls -w1 $WALLPAPERS` )
    RANGE=${#ALIST[*]}
    SHOW=$(( $RANDOM % $RANGE ))
    feh --bg-scale $WALLPAPERS/${ALIST[$SHOW]}
    Here's the cron job (trying to run it every two minutes)
    */2 * * * * /usr/local/bin/wallpaper.sh
    Why doesn't it work from cron? If I run the script from the command line, it works fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Scott

    Ok, I changed the script with su, but it's still not working. As an idiot check, I looked, and the cron deamon is indeed running
    If I try to run the script from the command line now, it asks me for my user password . . . and I'm already running as that user.
    I tried a test cron :
    */1 * * * * /bin/date >> /home/firecat53/date.txt
    And it worked fine. The permissions on date.txt were firecat53:users 644. So doesn't that mean that that cronjob is executed as me? If I edited crontab like
    sudo crontab -e
    then I think it would create a job as the root user.
    Could this have something to do with somehow needing to recognize a running X session, since feh is an X application?
    #!/bin/sh
    WALLPAPERS="/mnt/ubuntu-home/firecat53/docs/wallpapers"
    ALIST=( `ls -w1 $WALLPAPERS` )
    RANGE=${#ALIST[*]}
    SHOW=$(( $RANDOM % $RANGE ))
    su -c 'feh --bg-scale $WALLPAPERS/${ALIST[$SHOW]}' firecat53
    I'm afraid I'm still stumped!
    Thanks!

  • Firefox and Desktop Wallpaper

    I work in a school and the kids are going crazy with changing their desktop background or wallpaper. I was able to figure out how to stop them from changing it when they use Safari, but unable to figure out how to stop them if they use Firefox. Any ideas on how to block them from changing the wallpaper? Where does Firefox save the wallpaper plist or is it a plist that is being saved? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Blocking System Preferences does not block changing the desktop using a 3rd party program nor does it block changing the dock.
    This is correct. I did try this and thought it was solved, but the kids still found a way. However, after doing a little more research, I did the following which did work.
    Thanks to Tom Rice who posted this fix in another area.
    Set up an account(ideally on a machine with workgroup manager installed) with a background that you want. Ideally this will be an image that is on all the machines you wish to manage. Using one of the predefined Apple images works. Log into workgroup manager and select the group or computer list you wish to manage. Click on the preferences for the group and then Details. Click on the plus sign to add a new preference manage. Navigate to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of the account you had set up previously and then select the com.apple.desktop.plist file. By default the settings for this file (such as desktop image) are set to be managed Once. Meaning that they will be set when the user logs in but can be changed after that. To change this click on the settings you want to have managed all the time. Then click copy. Highlight the word Always and then paste. When asked if you want to replace the MCX settings select yes. Apply and done. Users will then have the background you defined and will not be able to change it via any method. Of course locking the desktop preference is a good move too.
    This worked and I can already hear the kids moaning about "big brother" taking away their fun.
    Thank you everyone for your input on this issue.
