[SOLVED] Backlight getting on my nerves

So I bought a laptop a little over a year ago and didn't expect everything to work out of the box. Especially since it has one of the fancy Nvidia Optimus labels on it.
Anyway i have literally tried everything from installing nvidia driver(which doesn't allow me to start x) to placing boot parameters to trying less minimal distros like Linux Mint and nothing has worked.
Hardware:
lspci gives
lspci
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF117M [GeForce 610M/710M / GT 620M/625M/630M/720M] (rev a1)
As you can see the Nvidia isn't listed as a VGA compatble device even if the driver is installed.
Also xrandr only lists one provider
xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x46 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
Basically i have tracked the problem down to the kernel module i915 trying to control backlight via /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/ but the brightness controlling file is in /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight.
I tried to tell acpid via handlers to use the other file but X seems to automatically set a kernel for the hotkeys which i can't seem to overwrite. Does anybody have a clue on how i could tell X to change the correct file?
Thank you for your help!

@ HalosGhost Thanks. My brain sometimes gets ahed of my fingers.
Basically, I for some reason decided to look at the driver again. I looking at my Xorg config, it was pretty empty as Xorg autoconfigures pretty well nowadays.
Anyway in the manual pages for intel (man intel), there is this bad boy.
Option "Backlight" "string"
Override the probed backlight control interface. Sometimes the automatically selected backlight interface may not corre‐
spond to the correct, or simply most useful, interface available on the system. This allows you to override that choice by
specifying the entry under /sys/class/backlight to use.
Default: Automatic selection.
It seems the automatic selection always went for acpi_video0 instead of intel_backlight. As such if you change your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
such that it looks like this
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
EndSection
It works perfectly fine. Hope this helps a few ppl and thanks for the help!

  • IPhoto 6 getting on my nerves, will v8 help me?

    Hello,
    I've been using iPhoto 6.0.6 for a while now for organising my photos, and uploading them to Picasaweb and/or Facebook using the 3rd-party plugins.
    The 6 version has everything I need (as far as I know), but it also has a number of 'features' that are getting on my nerves, and that have me wondering if they persist in the current version (which I am not going to buy just because it has more bells and whistle, and eats up twice as much space for themes and such... :-/ )
    1) Something I grapple with every time I add photos: even when instructed NOT to add colour profiles to imported photos, I find that a good part end up getting a copy in the Modified folder. Mostly vertical ('portrait') pictures, but curiously not always all of them, and it depends on the camera. I don't want those doubles (MANYmpix cameras eat hddisk space as it is), so I spend my time telling iPhoto to 'revert to original'. Correction, that's not enough (they'll just come back!), so I empty those directories in Modified, then lock them, and only then instruct iPhoto to 'revert to original'. This takes way too much time ... and frankly ... display orientation could be a metadata flag, not an edit of the picture data!
    2) Today, I added about 1Gb of pictures taken with my new dSLR, already sorted and selected outside of iPhoto, on an external harddisk. I'd decided not to import those pics in my iPhoto folder, but leave them on the external. I noticed that iPhoto had made an alias to each file in the Originals directory, plus a bunch of files (copies) in Modified. So much for "not importing into the iPhoto library...!). Long story short: I did as above: trahsed the copies in Modified, locked the directories they'd been in, relaunched iPhoto, selected all new photos and instructed it to 'revert to original'.
    SURPRISE
    I started getting yells about missing files. Files that had been there moments before, but were now, indeed, GONE. Gone from the external, while the alias in Originals persisted! I'm well aware that I trying to do something unsupported in iPhoto, but that shouldn't have resulted in file deleting outside of the iPhoto library!
    I'll report this as a bug, but I'd appreciate if someone with the latest version could try to see if s/he can reproduce the issue.
    3) Creating of aliases to photos not imported into the iPhoto library
    4) if a (vertical) photo has to be rotated to be displayed correctly, its thumbnail (typically having the right orientation) will be rotated too, ending up in the wrong orientation
    5) I organise my photos in albums, which are stored in folders (maps), usually per year. New albums are always created in the 'root', so have to be moved into the right map. Impossible to put them at the end of the existing list in the target map. The only way I found to put them there is by putting them at the fore-last position, and then move the last album 1 position up.
    Feedback on this would be much appreciated.

    I'm not sure you understand it. Witness the whole rotation issue.
    Please don't make the mistake of taking me for your average computer illiterate. I understand fully well that the orientation flag as recorded in the EXIF data is only to allow applications to open the image in the intended orientation. I'd hope that those $$$ apps you mention do just that. What happens afterwards, is indeed undefined. I disagree with iPhoto's stance to impose an unasked-for edit onto the user, for a simple operation that could in fact simply be done on the fly each time the photo is displayed. I find that approach to be more consistent with an app that is not primarily an editor, but an organiser.
    I also disagree with the feature that it will keep doing the operation (and storing a modified file) even after I tell it to revert back to the original. The way you're explaining things, that command is de facto senseless on pictures with the orientation flag set to vertical, as iPhoto might re-edit the file immediately after finishing the command.
    The folders in my Modifled directory are write-protected, but perfectly readable. They're just empty. iPhoto is designed to handle that: it will display a place-holder for pictures it cannot find in the expected place (as stored in the XML file AlbumData.xml). That's explicable behaviour. A more intelligent app would proceed to find the original, but in iPhoto the "revert to original" command is required to do so manually.
    That's about all there's to it for photos that were imported into the library.
    NOTHING in that behaviour explains or even allows to suspect that when files are 'Referenced' as you call it, the original will get unlinked when iPhoto tries to access ... the modified photo it cannot find. Remember, for truly imported files, it stops trying and shows a placeholder when a modified file is missing. It does not unlink the original file.
    Please note that there are also unintentional reasons why a file could go missing from somewhere within the Modified folder. Would you be happy your original got lost too with the explanation that something unexpected happened? Or would you consider that iPhoto should have guaranteed that nothing it ever does will cause a change to your original, in other words, that you'd not have lost that original picture?
    You confirm my hunch: the Calendar function is to get at (the "origininals") of all pictures taken in a given year. Not for making a meta-organisation of your pictures (remember that each photo can be in an unlimited number of albums, but each album can only be in a single place. (This may be hard to fathom for someone who's only used to the almost flat organisation of files under Mac OS X, as opposed to other Unixs?)
    My gripe is just that appending an album to (the end of) a list of albums in a folder takes more operations than should be necessary.
    As to the "some system to tracking" ... full filenames are stored in the aforementioned XML file. It would have been easier and probably more robust to store the path to where the file truly lives in that file, rather than the path to an alias to that file. If not only because aliases also take place on disk (and proportionally more than a photo, in fact, even if they're showed as being 0 bytes in size!). I'm still quite convinced that it's something in the kernel-level of aliases that's responsible to what happened to me yesterday. The Unix-side of OS X doesn't 'understand' aliases as well as the 'Finder-side' understands Unix soft- and hard-links.
    You know what a really agressive problem-solving method is? Dunking the computer all together...
    Yesterday's solution for keeping the files where I want was simple, in the end. I surrendered, and imported the pictures into the iPhoto library. But then, aside from the tried-and-true process of emptying and write-locking the folder in Modified, and doing a revert-to-original on all imported photos, I replaced the newly created folders inside Originals with symbolic links (NO Finder aliases!) to the true original location on the external harddisk. I'd had a slight doubt whether iPhoto would or would not accept this (by doing an @n@l check that would be too complicated to explain here, and utterly senseless), but no problems there.
    I'd have preferred to modify the XML data, but this workaround was faster and possibly less problem-prone.
    Now, I'm going to hijack my thread a tiny bit. As mentioned, I use iPhoto to organise my pictures, add some comments, and most of the time, upload them to a Picasaweb album.
    There are 2 'on-my-nerve' issues with that, one new from yesterday, which seem suitable to discuss in this thread.
    A) the uploader plugin claims there's a new version, but upgrading only installs the standalone uploader (plus a bunch 'updaters' in system places without as much as mentioning it: gogole bad!). Has anyone managed to find an updated version? A quick websearch yielded no answers here.
    B) The new thing, which I"m very excited about ... I was uploading the 400-some photos of my last trip, and adding some locations to photos already in picasaweb, for once using Safari. To be exact, I was scrolling through satellite imagery of the Waddenzee, following the ferry route we'd taken, when everything froze in a way I rarely experience (mouse included). The thumbnail image of the image being uploaded seemed corrupted, the only other indication something had gone wrong. The panic log indicates a crash occurred in the display driver or some similar lowlevel location. I then installed the latest security patch (005 ?), which apparently contains some protection(s) against boundary issues in the lowlevel display handling. I don't know if there's a link, but I had to upload the remaining 60 photos by batches of 6 at the most, each time terminated by a message that picasaweb was not available.
    Does this ring a bell? Could the uploader be doing something that triggered the issue that's worked around in the latest security release (and caused the KP), as a result of which the upload process now terminates with an error? Remember, I uploaded more than 300 photos in a row and without a glitch before the KP, so it's reasonable to presume that my iPhoto hack isn't the cause here (in fact, I upload reduced versions, so the uploader first creates those, and then upload those copies, which are stored I have no idea where but probably not in the iPhoto library).

  • Itunes 11.1.2, iOS 7.0.3 - stuck @ waiting for changes to be applied - Its getting on to nerves !!!

    All was working fine, until I updated to iOS 7 and connected to itunes. All my music was wiped off my device, god knows what happened. Since 3 weeks I have been failing to sync my music back again, but with vain.
    For people whom the troubleshooting steps have worked, have been really lucky. Unfortunately nothing worked for me, spent hours together doing the below steps
    1. Re-Install iOS - restore, which took hours to download and install
    2. Uninstalled itune 3 times and chose multiple locations to install
    3. did a setting reset on the iphone
    4. tried syncing playlist by playlist
    5. tried installing/uninstalling an app while sync in progress, no luck
    6. tried syncing over wi-fi, no luck
    7. restart, hard reset, no luck.
    This is getting onto my nerves now, APPLE, hope your developers are looking into this, this can never be a fault with the device hardware, this has got to do something with the crappy iOS7 or the itunes 11.1.2
    Haven't seen anyone even caring about this topic, where hundreds of people are shouting on the same issue.
    Battery back up ***** after OS upgrade. Overheating.
    Please do something, before I move out to a Windows Phone.
    Many Thanks for all the trouble your new OS and itunes has given to its consumers.
    Rgds,

    Oh, also want to add that the PC I'm currently using is:
    Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
    My other PC was:
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    My MacBook is:
    Max OSX 10.5.something (the last update available for it. .8 maybe? haha)
    Not sure if this stuff is important, but I thought I'd add it.

  • KeyChain Getting On My Nerves

    At first I thought KeyChain would be a great help, but now it is just getting on my nerves. I really do not want to have to enter my KeyChain password just to check for new mail messages, or to auto fill in web passwords. Is there any way to keep KeyChain's ability to remember passwords, without me needing to remember a password to enable it? I already have one main password before anyone can even get into my account, so I am not too worried about security. Thanks!

    It's not supposed to work that way. Open Keychain Access (utilities folder), go under the first menu and run keychain first aid.

  • Update didn't solved backlight button problem

    When I first got my iPod (30GB 5th-gen) I used to press menu for a couple of seconds and the screen backlight would turn off, the first update disabled that function, now with the last update pressing and holding menu takes me to the Main Menu, has Apple dropped that function at all? is there anyway to turn off the backlight manually? is there a manual to learn what has changed in the last update? I really need to know because 80% of the time I use the iPod at my car and setting up the backlight timer to Always On is my only choice there; I'm done with going to the whole process of changing this setting every time I get to the gym and back again when I plug it to the car.

    "has Apple dropped that function at all?"
    Yes, that function was removed in the software update 1.1, so there is no problem to solve (at least from Apple's point of view).
    See: iPod returns to menu instead of backlight.

  • [Solved] Difficulty getting digital audio to play in all applications

    This is probably a noobish question...
    My motherboard supports digital audio out via S/PDIF cable (optical), as well as standard analog audio. I have a stereo receiver that I've plugged my optical cable into.
    When I go to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback, I put the "HDA Intel S/PDIF Digital" device on top and clicked Test. I could hear the test tone (playback source is PCM).
    However, if I go to play an MP3 or whatever, I have to go into the settings for each application and tell it to use that particular device. Some applications (such as Firefox) do not have obvious settings for audio playback. Is there a way to solve the problem once and for all (tell the audio system "send everything through the digital device all the time")?
    (I read the relevant section of the wiki, but it is focused on getting sound out of your digital device, not making it the default.)
    Any other advice or gotchas about using digital audio would also be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    I'm testing output by going to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon and clicking the Test button with "HDA Intel (AD198x Digital)" selected. Nothing comes out through SPDIF, though it does play through analog (I have two separate pairs of headphones plugged in, one to the analog jack and one to a headphone amp plugged through the digital port) so I can tell which port the audio is coming from).
    I've checked the hardware volume, and it appears to be in order. The amp is not reporting any audio signal on the optical port. I tried switching out the cable just to be paranoid, and still nothing. I believe this is a software problem.
    Any ideas?

  • This is really getting on my NERVES!! _NOT A GRIPER_ legitamate question...

    I am writing a sort of desktop program (sort of like the desktop to Windows and or any X Window System desktop like GNome or KDE, you get the picture) I've written a FileIcon class that extends JPanel, and I have added a listener for Mouse Drag, so that in theory when you drag the icon it follows the mouse. It looks something like this:
    //this is in the constructor:
    this.addMouseMotionListener(new java.awt.event.MouseMotionAdapter() {
    public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
    this_mouseDragged(e);
    void this_mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
    this.setLocation(e.getPoint());
    Okay now here is the IDIOTIC ANNOYING AGGREVATING NERVE RACKING (sorry I had to vent) PROBLEM:
    The Icon does two things that it should not be doing:
    First it I guess the average of the point where it started and the point where my mouse is. The farther I move from the starting point from the mouse, the farther behind it goes.
    Secondly, and more annoying, is it blinks between two different locations, so sometimes when I let go of the mouse at the bottom of the screen, the icon will have moved towards the top of the screen. It lands on whatever of the two locations, both following the mouse from different angles (see problem number 1), happens to be its position at the moment. Try it out:
    make a JPanel with a null layout and add the IconClass made below,
    make some IconClass extending JPanel, with the above code for the drag event, and try dragging it around a little bit.
    All and any help is appreciated and if I have any duke dollars left I will reward a complete fix answer with as many as I can.

    I found a suitable fix, incase anyone else is trying to do this:
    Point point1 = this.getLocation();
    Point point2 = this.getLocation();
    MouseEvent dragEvent;
    public Point addPoint(Point p1, Point p2)
    point1 = this.getLocation();
    point2 = dragEvent.getPoint();
    int x = (int) (p1.getX() + p2.getX() - 40);
    int y = (int) (p1.getY() + p2.getY() - 40);
    return new Point(x,y);
    public void run()
    this.setLocation(addPoint(point1,point2));
    void this_mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
    highlight(MOUSE_DRAG,e);
    if (type != 0)
    dragEvent = e;
    Thread t = new Thread(this);
    t.start();
    It works pretty well

    It is good to see your system working now, though I tend to frown against reinstalling the entire system. Fixing the issue though sometimes tedious and frustrating can be one of the best ways for you to learn about your system and a fresh install doesn't teach you anything (apart from learning the tools to install Arch better I guess..). Which in your case, some knowledge is much needed seeming that you were executing commands without even knowing what they even do...
    Gummiboot is just a bootloader and shouldn't effect any of the libraries listed in your first post so it is still unknown why this issue has happened. You didn't even mention anything you did previous to your error nor posted any logs so no one could help you properly.
    Anyhow if you feel your problem Is fixed, It would be great if you marked the thread as solved.
    It's alright I wanted to change the partition order anyway.
    nevertheless next time I will be sure to look into the problem further.

    Ok, solved-ish. There were actually 3 issues:
    1. There's a problem in the 0.6.18 new python paraminko ssh internals that was preventing it from uploading more than about 1GB at a time, possibly because it's reusing the same ssh connection which some webhosts will kick off after a certain time or amount.
    2. The --num-retries parameter wasn't being read by the ssh backend
    3. There's a bug in some encryption validation code that had to be removed before a 'resume backup' operation would work correctly (it won't read the GPG encryption key correctly).
    So I reverted to 0.6.17 and removed a previously applied patch from the code found here.
    So far it seems to be working. The dev who answered me on Launchpad said that there's a memory leak with 0.6.17 so watch out when doing any backups over ~100GB or so.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble getting initrd-image to work

    Hello everyone
    I'm trying to get plymouth to work and for that reason I'm messing with initrd images for the first time in my life.
    I had no issues generating the image, but once I rebooted, nothing happened. It looks like lilo fails to load the image since I'm not getting the 'Loading initrd-blahblah.img........' message, although I'm not getting any error messages either. Basically it just loads kernel and boots normally like it's never heard of initrd images.
    These are the lines I've changed in/etc/mkinitcpio.conf. Everything else is default.
    MODULES="radeon"
    HOOKS="base udev plymouth autodetect sata filesystems"
    COMPRESSION="lzma"
    running mkinitcpio.conf, no errrors there
    # mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initrd-$(uname -r).img
    :: Begin build
    :: Parsing hook [base]
    :: Parsing hook [udev]
    :: Parsing hook [plymouth]
    :: Parsing hook [autodetect]
    :: Parsing hook [sata]
    :: Parsing hook [filesystems]
    :: Generating module dependencies
    :: Generating image '/boot/initrd-2.6.35.4-ck1.img'...SUCCESS
    /etc/lilo.conf:
    lba32
    boot=/dev/sdb
    compact
    prompt
    timeout=50
    default=2.6.35.4-ck1
    read-only
    root=/dev/sdb1
    image=/boot/kernel-2.6.35.4-ck1
    label=plymouth
    initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.35.4-ck1.img
    append="quiet splash sata_nv.swncq=1 pci=nomsi snd-hda-intel.model=3stack snd-hda-intel.probe_mask=1 powernow-k8.vcore_list=1125,1125,825"
    running lilo shows error message but I've been getting it since I installed arch, and it has been working fine nevertheless.
    # lilo
    /proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
    Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
    Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
    Added 2.6.35.4-ck1 *
    Added plymouth
    Added nokms
    Added bootchart
    Also I think it might be relevant to point out that I'm building my kernels by hand (no PKGBUILDs or anything).
    Any ideas will be appreciated
    EDIT: solved. forgot to enable support for initramfs/initrd in kernel

    In the future you should never post valid IP addresses.
    If you use DHCP addressing then the IP addresses are assigned automatically from the DHCP server. Your router contains a DHCP server that is used to provide local IP addresses to devices that share an IP address via NAT. You should not use a manual IP address on such a network unless it happens to be a local IP address. And it you do then the IP address must be in the range of IP addresses served by your router. Different routers serve different address ranges. Yours is serving in the range of 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.199. Your router currently assigns your machine the address of 10.0.1.2.
    If you configure Network preferences to use DHCP with manual addressing then you can assign your computer the 10.0.1.2 address that is presently assigned by the router. The gateway IP address and network mask will still be assigned automatically by your router.
    When you set up port forwarding the IP address to which the ports are forwarded should be the IP address used by your machine - 10.0.1.2 in the above example.
    If your modem also has a built-in router then you must disable it. There should only be one active router in your network. It can be either the Airport Extreme or your modem's built-in router but not both. If you use your modem's built-in router then the IP addresses involved will no longer be in the 10.0.1.xxx range.

  • [Solved] Issue getting Bluetooth to work in Gnome.

    So, having just installed Arch successfully for the first time after using Ubuntu/Mint Distro's for about a year I'm starting to move around in the exiting world of Arch Linux, but still having some issues setting a few things up.
    One of these issues is setting up my Bluetooth dongle, it doesn't seem to work, or rather the Gnome Bluetooth menu doesn't want to turn itself on.
    I've got a generic USB 3.0 PCI card, with a USB hub connected to it, and the USB dongle connected to the hub. (Only way I can use my bluetooth headphones in the whole house), so at first I thought it was the PCI card or maybe a USB issue.
    Tested a USB HDD on the regular USB ports of my machine and it pops up no problem. So it's not a USB issue. Tested it with the secondary USB 3.0 port of my PCI card and again, no problem it works.
    Then I tested the journalctl -f command, and while plugging the USB dongle in (to the hub) i got this message:
    des. 28 11:15:34 localhost systemd[548]: Starting Bluetooth.
    des. 28 11:15:34 localhost systemd[548]: Reached target Bluetooth.
    So, something is obviously happening, but there is still no reaction in the Gnome menu. I'm new at this, so chances are there is something obvious Ive missed, please enlighten me.

    Hey Muito Obrigado for the help, I tried it and its still the same.
    Pulse Audio is for sound, but I don't have an issue connection my Bluetooth headphones, at least I don't think so, as I have yet to try.
    My issue is getting the USB dongle to even register in the Gnome menu.
    When I go to it the slider is always Off, moving it to On doesn't change anything the rest of the menu is still grayed out.
    EDIT:
    Sorry I just noticed this. In the menu it says Bluetooth is disabled but If I unplug the dongle it says No Bluetooth adapter found. So how do I enable it?
    Thanks again.

  • IPad syncing issues getting on my nerves... suggestions?

    When I first got my iPad 3G 64GB, I decided to sync as a new device and auto sync apps. Okay, but that put 22 pages of apps on my device and I was forced to spend at least a couple hours culling them down to just to fit the ones I want on the iPad... about 160.
    Spent a good portion of the day yesterday filling up my iPad with comics and movies, and suddenly it gave a sync error. ***. So I try syncing and it recognizes it as a new iPad again, and deletes all my movies and tv shows. double ***.
    Then I notice the syn apps tab is getting ready to put every single app back on my iPad once again, all 22 pages worth, so I hit the check box and stopped the sync apps function. It asks me if I want to delete all 160 apps, and of course I say no.
    So then it goes to back up. A couple hours later it finishes, and this morning when I go to sync again, the syn apps box is empty, so now my apps won't sync properly. triple ***.
    Is there anyway to fix this without putting everything back onto my iPad and deleting all the hours of work I spent on putting the comics there? How do I get the iPad to understand "yeah... well, I really DO want to sync apps, but don't add the unchecked apps in the list and put them on my device again... and don't delete the ones already there and replace with the whole setup all over again?"

    Okay, but that put 22 pages of apps on my device and I was forced to spend at least a couple hours culling them down to just to fit the ones I want on the iPad... about 160.
    Did you do this by deselecting the apps under the Apps tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync, which removes the deselected apps from your iPad, or did you remove the apps direct from your iPad?
    After Sync Apps is selected under the Apps tab for your iPad sync preferences, it must remain selected. If deselected followed by a sync, all apps will be removed from your iPhone.
    With Sync Apps selected, you can remove an app from your iPad by deselecting the app under the Apps tab for your iPad sync preferences followed by a sync. To re-install an app later, reselect the app under the Apps tab followed by a sync. After downloading a new app with iTunes on your computer, the app will be selected automatically under the Apps tab for your iPad sync preferences.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot get japanese fonts working in console

    First time with Arch. Did a clean install yesturday with Plasma as my choice of GUI.
    I have everything work, except for getting Japanese font support in consoles.
    First, fonts worked inside Dolphin, but looked terrible. So I added the infinality repos and installed infinality-bundle, infinality-bundle-multilib, ibfonts-meta-base, and ibfonts-meta-extended.
    This was probably overkill, but fonts look perfect in both my file manager and applications, but still no support in console, konsole, uxterm, or yakuake terminals.
    Then I made sure both "en_US.UTF-8" and "ja_JP.UT8" inside of /etc/locale.gen were uncommended and then ran "locale-gen" as root to generate the locales. After a reboot the fonts still wont work, the appear as ? in console.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    After a lot of messing around, I finally got it to work.
    Not only did "en_US.UTF-8" and "ja_JP.UT8" need to uncommented, but also "en_US.ISO-8859-1" and "ja_JP.EUC-JP".
    Running "sudo locale-gen" then returned:
    Generating locales...
      en_US.UTF-8... done
      en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
      ja_JP.EUC-JP... done
      ja_JP.UTF-8... done
    Generation complete.
    As expected. Oddly enough, the output of "locale" has not changed at all, but now japanese fonts show up correctly in shell and terminals, even without a reboot!
