[SOLVED] Can't get suspend to ram to work (pm-utils)

It suspends, but then when I wake up my desktop the display is black. I followed the wiki, did things like add the resume hook, remove the autodetect hook, pm-is-supported returns empty, and I can't see from the pm-suspend.log what the issue could be

Yes, that's normal and should work.
Looking at the module list maybe try stopping the video4linux before suspend.
To double check: boast, you rebuilt the kernel, yes?

  • [SOLVED] Can't get ccache and colorgcc to work together

    Hi all,
Has anyone figured out how to get ccache and colorgcc to work at the same time?  I can only get one or the other, but not both.
If I put them both in the path, with colorgcc first, then "g++" invokes colorgcc, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping ccache.
If I put ccache first in the path instead, then running "g++" invokes ccache, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping colorgcc for some reason.
Putting colorgcc back to first in the path, then editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgccrc means I can set the compiler paths to point to ccache.  However then running "g++" invokes colorgcc, which calls ccache, but then ccache seems to call colorgcc again, which calls ccache, which calls colorgcc, etc, etc.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I can't see how you tell ccache where the compiler binaries are located, as this seems to be the problem - ccache autodetects them, and always seems to pick the ones I don't want!
    Any suggestions?

Ha, ok, as usual as soon as I post in a forum I stumble across the answer.  Turns out there's a CCACHE_PATH environment variable you can use to tell ccache where to look for the real compilers.  It doesn't seem to work setting this to point to colorgcc, but putting only colorgcc in the path, editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgcc to point to ccache, then setting CCACHE_PATH=/usr/bin seems to do the trick...
But if there's a better way please let me know!

  • [SOLVED] Can't get xf86-video-r128 to work...

Hello! Arch newbie here, so far bumpy, but so far so good. Currently posting from TWM for kicks...
Anyways, my old junker of a computer was where I installed arch, so I could get a hang of it. The graphics card is a ATi RAGE XL AGP 2X... having no luck with xf86-video-ati, I installed xf86-video-r128, and got graphics working for the first time in arch. Hooray!
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my monitor's native resolution of 1280x1024. If I try, the monitor refuses to display, and errors out with "Out of Range". I know it's definitely possible, since other linux installations have auto-configured it so far. So, I'm wondering what I need to modify in xorg.conf to get 1280x1024 working.
It seems like a refresh rate problem, but when I looked over the file, I noticed that "Driver" was set to "vesa". Changing it to "r128" did nothing, as the X server refused to start because it couldn't find any devices.
I will post my xorg.conf shortly.

Karol, thanks for replying so quickly
I tried your suggestion to replace "vesa" with "ati" in the "Driver" line. X failed to start, but for some reason, there was some leftover code in xf86-video-ati that caused it to look for the mach64 driver... which as I understand, used to be installed with xf86-video-ati, but no longer... hrm! A quick "pacman -S xf86-video-mach64" later, I now have a working 1280x1024 resolution. Excellent! Changed the DefaultDepth to 16, and now my system is nice and zippy.
A similar problem is that I still cannot get 1280x1024 in vc1. In /boot/grub/menu.lst, I have "vga=773" added, but that's as high as I can go, vga=775 won't work with the same reason above.
Small problems in the grand scheme of things. I'm glad the main issue is solved

  • [Solved]Can't get Wired or Wireless Internet Working

So I installed arch on my netbook, but I'm having trouble getting both wireless and wired networking to work. When I run lspci it states I have an Atheros AR8152 Ethernet card and a Broadcom 4727 wireless device. I've tried to install the atheros driver and the b43 drivers, but I just can't seem to get them to work. Does anybody know how to fix this?

When I try that I get
    dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: interace not found or invalid
The problem I'm having is that when I run iwconfig the only thing that shows up is lo. There is no eth0 or wlan0.
EDIT: It seems that upgrading the kernel seemed to work.

  • [Solved] Suspend to RAM not working.

I just installed Arch on an old box with an MSI K8T Neo motherboard and I can't get suspend to RAM working. On the BIOS I have two ACPI modes: S1/POS  and S3/STR. If I set it to S1 it does suspend but the hardware is not actually shut off (the fans, LEDs, and monitor backlight says on). With the S3 setting it does a complete shutdown so when I turn it back on it fresh boots instead of resuming. Suspend to both effectively hibernates when the BIOS setting is S3, with S1 it behaves just as suspend to disk. I've tried using systemd, pm-utils, and writing to /sys/power/state directly. All the same.
Just until last night I had Windows XP x64 installed and suspend was working just fine. I mostly use it as a file and printer server but I don't want it running all the time so I use Wake-on-Lan so it wakes up on demand and I'll be using a cron script (or whatever is called on systemd) to put it back to sleep after a while.
    Any suggestions?

Flashing the bios fixed the problem. I didn't do it before because the readme that comes with the bios firmware said it was the version I had but it's actually 5 major versions newer.

Can't get my audio clip to work in Keynote except in edit mode. I've followed Help instructions to the letter. Any suggestions?

Hi Gary - thanks so much for your help. I'd already done that, but finally stumbled across the answer for my situation. I'm new to iMac and this is the first time I used Keynote, so maybe this info will help someone else along the way - I still haven't found this in any of the Keynote documentation or forums I've read.
My slides were all set up with at least one text box in which the text was animated. The sound was the last thing I added to each slide, exactly following the info in Keynote Help re: adding audio. The audio would work when I tested it in Inspector mode, and also if I switched to soundtrack instead. But not if sound was added to each individual slide. Hmmm. After I submitted the question above, I was running through the (auto) slide show one final time to check text, animation, etc. when I noticed that on just one single slide the sound effect came through, but at the very tail end of the slide. Hmm again. Why?
Through trial & error, the answer was in the animation section - not very intuitive re: audio. The steps to correct the issue were: 1) click on the sound icon embedded in each slide, 2) click on the animation tab in Inspector. 3) There's a drop-down menu there that allows you to reposition the audio clip to the #1 spot (if it was added after other "animation"). This allows the sound to begin before the text animation begins on each slide. Before doing this, I guess the sound was in there but the slides were transitioning before it had a chance to play.
Since this is the first time I've used Keynote and it's the most recent version, I'm not sure if this is a new feature to allow users to choose where within a slide to play a sound effect, but I'm guessing that might be why was unable to find any info on how to solve it. Hopefully this will help others who get stumped.
Thanks again for jumping in to help! I really appreciate it.

  • I have tried to reindex my messages but I still can not get the search function to work in email

I have tried reindecing my messages by rebuilding the library but I still can't get my message function to work in mail.  Any proposed solutions much appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock all your user files, reset their ownership, and remove their access-control lists. If you've set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • How can I get my web cam to work in Adobe Connect ?

This is actually an end user's question that I am having trouble answering to...
We use Adobe Connect to give online language classes, the end user is one of the students.
I cannot find the right Support answer to give him.
    Problem:
My camera does not work when I connect to Adobe's rooms but camera works fine with other software.
Even though I suspected my old camera was working fine, yesterday I went ahead and bought a new camera.
I thought perhaps my webcam software may have been a problem, so I bought a different type camera with different software.
Even after removing all the old software, same result:
I surmised the problem might be caused by my firewall and security software, so once I tried changing the permissions for Adobe, and my Webcam, but that didn’t work.
Another time, I restarted my computer right before class and then turned off my firewall completely so there would be no interference but to no avail. I’m totally perplexed.
Isn’t there anyone else experiencing a similar problem?   Has anyone else found a solution?
I run Windows Vista with McAfee Internet Security Software.  I always reboot the computer before class and open no other programs other than Google Chrome.
I now have a brand new Microsoft LifeCam Cinema Camera with LifeCam 3.5 Webcam Software.
I test my camera before going online.  It always works fine.   Then I shut down the camera program and login into class.
When I “connect webcam” in the room, the light on my camera comes on (suggesting that it is ON), but only a black image is transmitted to the room.

Check to see if you have Google Voice installed. If so, remove it and see
if your problem vanishes. If not Google Voice, check to see if you have
any other communications software which interacts with your cam and
disable it. This was the problem I had with a similar problem on a Mac.

Thanks a lot Heyward for the swift reply !
I sent the advice out to the end user, but unfortunately this wasn't the
    solution.
    His reply is below :-
The default resolution of my new camera is already set at 640x360, but I
went ahead and tried several lower resolutions (e.g. 424x240; 320x240; and
160x120) but none worked in the room - camera still showed up as black
blank screen.  Also, as far as I can tell, I don’t have the option of
    adjusting the frame rate.
I started playing around with my Internet Security Settings to see if they
might be playing a role. So far, all to no avail.
Hmm...quite a tricky one - webcams always are - maybe if he can find a way
to adjust the frame rate (?).
He's going to fiddle about with the settings a bit more and see if
    something does the trick.
If anyone has had a similar problem and found an ingenious solution,
please jot on a note on this thread.
