[solved] Gnome 3.6 : brightness, battery and background

In addition to gdm freezing, here are the other problems I have:
- Changing brightness does not work anymore (from hotkeys or brightness extension)
- Remaining battery power does not show when unplugged
- Background stays gray whatever I select in the settings
Let me know if you have any fix for these issues.
Note that I start gnome-session with slim instead of gdm.
-- edit --
One more problem: the keyboard settings panel crashes and I cannot change keyboard layout anymore.
-- edit: solved ---
Reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon did the trick (it removed the deprecated "gnome-settings-daemon-intel-backlight")
sudo pacman -Syyu gnome-settings-daemon

My apologies for the slight necro-bump but I did a little digging in the wiki and found this very helpful piece of info:
For any users that don't have any of the default folders such as Pictures, Downloads, etc, you can install and run:
pacman -S xdg-user-dirs
xdg-user-dirs-update
everything in the Gnome places menu will be sorted and putting pictures in the 'Pictures' folder works!

  • [SOLVED] [GNOME 3.8] Nautilus not drawing background

    If I check "have file manager handle the desktop" then I lose my background image and get a white screen instead.
    Right clicking the screen and going to the wallpaper settings shows my wallpaper as being there, and being the right one. But the background is, of course, white.
    Changing the shell theme to default doesn't help. What to do?

    I have read this and the thread referenced below. This is NOT solved and I believe the problem is NOT properly diagnosed. My problem was identical to the symptoms described. With select background images (using various themes) the background was a blank white (in my case). The default themes worked fine regardless of background. However, I noticed that if I turned off Nautilus for painting/controlling the screen my Icons went away and my background came back. Further, If I installed Nemo (which I prefer anyway) the icons returned and any theme displayed the background of my choice correctly. It is unclear whether the problem is Nautilus or the themes compatability with Gnome 3.8 or Gnome 3.8 itself that is the problem. It would be nice to see if others can reproduce my experiences so we can narrow down the culprit(s). I am not confident a trouble ticket is in order yet as I cannot pinpoint the problem.
    I also believe the two threads should be combined so as not to promote further confusion.
    You're probably right about merging threads - but that is upto a TU to do. On the question of whether or not this has been [SOLVED] in this case, yes it has been. The user's gtk+ theme was not compatible with gnome 3.8, there are many themes that are not.
    Now, on the nautilus bit.
    - As i have pointed out in both threads, nautilus no longer paints the wallpaper in 3.8 - it only paints a transparent window, GS paints the wallpaper behind it (which is probably what causes the incompatibility black/white window in gtk+ theme). It's also the reason why when you turn nautilus off, your background returns (because GS handles wallpaper) and nautilus was blocking it by not painting a transparent window.
    - Nemo is based on nautilus *3.6* - in 3.6 nautilus doesn't paint a transparent window -> it paints the background for nautilus/desktop (but note: at this point GS in 3.8 would also be painting wallpaper behind that).
    So there is no confusion here between nautilus and nemo, none at all - one does not handle painting wallpaper (nautilus), while the other one does handle painting dekstop wallpaper (nemo).
    from my perspective, this appears to not be a bug, but rather a given gtk+ theme must be ported to 3.8.
    that being said, if you have a working gtk+ 3.8 theme and nautilus 3.8 (not nemo) painting the desktop correctly - then you could try to switching through a few GS themes, allowing you to rule out GS theming as having any influence. Which would essentially verify that this is a gtk+ theme problem...
    my only problem, is that i have not been able to identify any code in any gtk+ theme that i have that hints at the cause, but it may also be the gtk+ engine that has the bug - this i don't know.

    OK- I think I've SOLVED all my Nautilus problems, which included the endless respawning "Starting Filemanager windows" on the panel, the hal daemon related GDM 3 for 1 key repeat prevents login problem, and the Nautilus refusing to launch problem!
    After reviewing the Gentoo Hal documetation, and realizing I had the xf86-input-evdev driver installed on Arch, I had forgotten that in order to get the mouse/keyboard to function I had to previously add a line in xorg.conf that was now conflicting with hal/dbus and the new xorg server version.
    I just commented out this line in xorg.conf, like this
    Section "ServerFlags"
    # Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
    Option "DontZap" "false"
    EndSection
    and added the hal daemon (which calls dbus) to my /etc/rc.conf, which allows evdev/hal/dbus to do it's thing.
    Along with the edits to the /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop file (which is strangely named "File Manager" in Thunar, one of three files of the same name).  The edits made are:
    X-GNOME-AutoRestart=false    # changed from =true
    AutostartCondition=GNOME /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop    # added this line
    Now, I can boot from GDM into a normal gnome session, and Nautilus launches normally, without endlessly repawning itself in the panel.
    The fix itself was quite simple, but tracing the cause down and understanding it was not!

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 Document, Contacts and file preview Problems

    Hi, I just enabled the testing the community testing repos today. I updated and I got a huge list of updates and pacman downloaded them. However while checking for file conflicts it said locale.sh was found in /etc/profile.d/ folder and hence it did not install anything. However, I moved the locale.sh folder to my home folder and then proceeded with the installation. It all went smooth. I restarted and was presented with the new login screen. I login and find the new user menu, hot plugs notifications working.
    However, Gnome-Documents and Gnome-Contacts are missing. I searching in the application overview but couldn't find it. Also the live preview in nautilus does not work with the keyboard shortcut 'spacebar'. Does anybody have this problem and how to solve this?

  • Battery and background refresh control issue in iOS8

    Hello,
    I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS8 yesterday night. This morning my battery was at 100% battery when I arrived at the office at 8, and after 4 hours, it dropped to 23% without any specific usage, only receiving few emails.
    When I went to the battery usage, I see that background activity is using the battery from Facebook and Hangouts apps. But I go to the Background App Refresh menu, I see that I already deactivated the background refresh for these two apps (see screenshots below).
    I bought my iPhone 5 in  July this year. It was completely new.
    Is there any issue with Background App Refresh settings?
    Why is my battery dropping so fast?

    Facing The Same Issue ! Charged To 100% And In The Morning It Dropped 10%(89-90%). I Did Not Even Use The Phone Afrer The Charge !! This Issue Has Been Affecting My Phone Since I Updates iOS-8 . When I Had iOS 7.1.2 It Was Absoluely Fine ! And The Other Issue I Am Facing Is On Diagnostics And Usage Which Is Showing Me Sort Of Stacks+backboardd . The Log Is Appeared In Every Hour ..! What Is Wrong With Apple Devices ! Every A Time Something Or The New Comes :/

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.16 + GDM Login & Background Image

    It's being surprisingly difficult to understand what's needed in order to have a login screen that does not contain the default noise PNG as background.
    Apparently now the default theme is a gresource so common css overwrite don't seem to make it.
    How did you folks solved this problem?
    Apologies if already discussed, it's just that the problem is NOT the GNOME Desktop Background, and NOT the lock screen, just ONLY the gdm background screen during login.
    Other tricks seem to not work neither:
    sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver picture-uri '/new/picture.png'
    Thanks for any sort of help with this and Best Regards

    I finally got this to work. The wiki needs updating as of now it only states that gnome shell theme is now in a binary format, but not how to extract and repack it afterwards...
    Anyway this is how i got it to work.
    Use this script to extract gnome-shell-theme inside your choosen working directory
    extractgst.sh
    #! /bin/sh
    #change workdir to suit your system
    workdir=/home/merlin/temp/GS/test
    gst=/usr/share/gnome-shell/gnome-shell-theme.gresource
    mkdir theme
    for r in `gresource list $gst`; do
    gresource extract $gst $r >$workdir${r/#\/org\/gnome\/shell/}
    done
    Once you've run the script you should have the theme extracted to the theme folder which was created inside your workdir.
    Now you can proceed to add a background image to this folder and edit gnome-shell.css by following the wiki page.
    You must now create the file gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml inside the theme directory. Simply copy paste the xml code below into  gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml,  making sure to change the line that refers to your background image. On my system the background image is named login-background.jpg
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <gresources>
    <gresource prefix="/org/gnome/shell/theme">
    <file>calendar-arrow-left.svg</file>

    <file>ws-switch-arrow-up.png</file>
    <file>ws-switch-arrow-down.png</file>
    </gresource>
    </gresources>
    now the only thing left to do is to run
    cd ./theme
    glib-compile-resources gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml
    It will create a gresource file that you can swap in /usr/share/gnome-shell.
    Good luck and hopefully I will save many some headache. Took me quite a while to get the whole thing working

    Dear all,
    I just downloaded the now IOS7 on my iPhone4S, the background picture has faded a bit, the folders that contains my icons are solid bright gray and the keyboard is pail/bright gray and I can hardly see it. Is there a way that I can change the colors, the shades, etc? I don't like the new layout, it's too bright and too pale, like the face of a Georgian monarchy. Thank you for your help and support.

    I changed the background picture, which is a dark pink flower, now the folders have become solid pink! Not esthetically pleasing

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.6.1 Control Center Printers and Users "unlock"...

    I have an Arch system running Gnome 3.6 with systemd, and without consolekit as is now the standard.
    After upgrading from Gnome 3.4 to 3.6, the unlock buttons in both Users and Printers section of gnome-control-center no longer work. (In 3.4, the printers dialog could authenticate but it never actually worked properly - I heard they fixed this in 3.6. I never tried the Users panel back then)
    Anyways, I sifted through the source code for the Printers dialog, and it points to the polkit 'org.opensuse.cupspkhelper.mechanism.all-edit' rule. Reading the rule file for cupspkhelper (which exists), it specified "allow_admin" is what this rule wants. Following further research, I added myself to the 'wheel' group which apparently should work. And after all of this? It still doesn't work. I imagine that there is a similar problem for the Users panel, but I haven't investigated in detail.
    Any ideas to get this working? Is it broken upstream? Is it my fault?
    Thanks
    [edit] I guess I should post some logs, bug running gnome-control-center in terminal doesn't actually output anything. -v adds nothing other than to say it is in debug mode.

  • [Solved] Gnome-Shell and separating programs in the program switcher

    Hi,
    I would like to treat different instances of Emacs as different programs in Super-Tab program switcher in Gnome-Shell (I run mail and music in different instances).
    In the overview they show as different programs via .desktop files.  But with Super-Tab they always collapse into one program (always with the normal Emacs icon).
    Any tips on how to tell gnome that different instances of some program is are to be considered different applications?

  • T420s - screen brightness increases and decreases

    Hi,
    I have noticed on my T420s that screen changes screen brightness depending on the picture on the screen.
    For example:
    - I look at some site with dark background and few grey letters
    when I switch screen to my outlook or for example firefox with this forum that has white background at first few minutes white is gray and then it gradually becomes whiter and whiter until after about 2 seconds it settles.
    I thought at first my eyes have issue, but it is definetly behaviour of my laptop.
    Anyone with the same issue? Can this be fixed by some software/power manager tweak?

    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Macbook pro Late 2011 13.3 inch i7 keyboard and trackpad not working bluetooth showing a cross sign and no usb mouse is detected. Almost dead keyboard and mouse. Earlier same problem used to be solved by opening the lower cover and closing it.

    My macbook pro 13.3 inch i7 late 2011 edition has previously encountered unresponsive trackpad and keyboard. To solve that, I used to open the back cover and then close it. It has been working fine since that. Yesterday, same thing happened, this time I noticed that bluetooth icon is showing a cross sign across it and keyboard and trackpad were unesponsive. After some time , everything worked fine and bluetooth sign was back to normal. Then , suddenly it went back to the problem. I shut it down by holding the power button. When I booted it again, I could not login because keyboard and trackpad were not working. I attached a HP mouse it didnt work. I opened the back cover disconnected the battery and then connected it again, didnt worked. Since then , I have tried many things and nothing has solved the problem.

    @sanjampet
    As you suggested I reset the smc, in the first boot nothing worked. In the second boot, it all worked like a charm. I thought that my problem is resolved now. To test it, I shut it down properly. Next morning, I powered it on, all things i.e, keyboard, trackpad, bluetooth etc. worked and I thought that problem has been solved. When I was just going to visit apple forum to reply you,  the same problem reappeared. A sawtooth cross over bluetooth icon, keyboard not working, trackpad not working,no usb mouse working which worked well when it was fine. I reset smc so many times again and again but same problem continued. Isn't it a problem of the firmware?
    Next time when it will work, I will update its firmware.
    My macbook was bought in dec2011 so no warranty now.

  • Gnome: mime types, file associations and defaults.list

    I installed the new Gnome 2.8 during the weekend and now my file type associations is completely bloated. The mime system is intact - Nautilus recognises files properly. However, Nautilus doesn't know which applications to open a specific file with. I have read other posts and found useful information, but not the solution.
    This post in FedoraForum gave me a hint to what's causing the problem:
    http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread … post127530
    It seems that the file defaults.list is missing from /usr/share/mime/applications. Apparently this file contains the associations  between applications and mime types. I have not be able to find out which package should provide this file or how to recreate it. Can anyone help - maybe provide the name of the package that provides this file?
    Thanks,

    Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
    That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
    and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
    Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
    I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

    After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
    Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
    That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

    Did you try turning off power nap?
