[SOLVED] Hearing the Mic through speakers/headphones

Hey guys,
So after a long hiatus to Linux Mint, I've finally come back to Arch. Gotta say that I'm really impressed with how things have progressed here.
I'm encountering a really annoying bug in an otherwise trouble-free installation of Arch. I can hear my own voice through my speakers and headphones when I speak into my mic.
ADDED: I can always hear myself through the mic, not just with skype or audacity or whatever.
Let me describe my setup - it's pretty standard.
I have two speakers hooked up to my motherboard's onboard audio at the back, and a front mic and headphone jack that I use to plug in my headphone-mic headset.
I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware fault because I came from Linux Mint 8 and the audio/mic was fine there.
First of all, uname -mrsn gives
3.0-ARCH x86_64
Here's my audio chip from alsamixer:
Realtek ALC662 rev1
And card:
HDA NVidia
lspci gives me
00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio (rev a1)
And alsa driver version:
1.0.24
The output from amixer:

In alsamixer, I muted the front mic in 'Playback' and for some reason, the digital control in the 'Capture' controls the mic volume. I can confirm that this set up also works in Skype. I don't understand why the 'digital' control affects the mic volume - it's an analogue device.

Looking at the details for this mic, it appears that the app has to have the option to use the internal specak when a mic is plugged into the headphone jack. Specifically:
NOTE: When MityMic is plugged into your iPod/iPhone you won’t be able to use the onboard speaker for sound output. You must remove the MityMic then play back your recordings. (The Skype app has an option to enable the onboard speaker even when the mic is plugged in, so you could use MityMic for placing Skype calls. However most other apps do not have this function.)

No, you would need to connect the headphones to the audtio out on the TV or strero being used.

  • Hearing the audio through the headset

Right, i have had this problem for ages, i like to play online games on my laptop and talk on skype. Whenever i plug in my headphones i can hear the game volume but if i go on skype the game audio will come out of my laptop and the skype will come through the headset and i cant hear both audios through my headset help?????
i have a hp pavilion entertainment pc

    Hey Smophiez,
Sometimes Windows sets one device as the communications device (ex. for Skype), and another to the normal audio device.
To change this, right click on the volume control icon right beside the clock, and click Playback Devices. You should see a list of different audio devices, for example "Headphones" and "Speakers" or something like that. Anyways, pick the device you want, for example your headset/headphones, right click on it, and click "Set as Default Device". Right click on it again, and click "Set as Default Communications Device". This way, all audio will be routed only through that device that you've picked.

I had similar problems and could get nothing whatsoever when trying to record from the microphone or using it in Skype (it was obviously muted completely in some way). Tried everything I could in alsamixer, and installing PulseAudio didn't manage to get it working either.
However I installed gnome-alsamixer, and ticked a few 'Rec.' check boxes and everything works now as it should! Sorry I can't pin down exactly what switched it on.

  • I can't hear music/sound through my headphones.

    Hi
Basically. I have the iPhone earbuds.... when I plug them into my iMac I can hear Skype calls through them no problem. If I turn iTunes on and play music... I hear nothing. If iTunes is playing when I answer a call, I have my conversation and end the call... the music plays briefly through the earbuds then stops. I can't hear anything through them except when I'm having a skype conversation.
I am currently running osx Maverick. This wasn't a problem before, but now that I have updated, it's happening and it's really frustrating. I also option clicked the sound icon in the bar and it's showing my headphones are connected. Please help?

    I figured it out.
When you plug them in, you have to adjust the volume directly from the headphones or you don't hear anything. So use the little control on your apple headset and the sound will work. I feel like such an idiot for not figuring that out sooner *facepalm*

  • Mic through speakers

I want to hear the line-in input through the speakers. This used to be easy with XP, but I was told that Microsoft had an agreement with the music industry to hel prevent illegal copying of music, and they disabled line-in monitor volume. Anyway, I googled around and all the solutions wont work for me. I saw that sometime a registry entry can fix this, but it didnt work for my soundcard.
Its REALLY important for me, recording is something I do very often with the computer. any help would be much appreciated.
My machine is A300, Vista 32, Realtek HD soundcard

I tried Audacity, and it does give a software playthorugh emulator, but its not good enough for me for two reasons:
    1. it has some delay
    2. its only working while recording. I need the playthrugh to work all the time.
I found some youtube guides on how to enable this, but none of them seems to work by me, since my Realtek HD section in control pannel does not have a playback volume bar for the microphonee

When I put my headphones in it gets all crackly and I can't hear the singing but when there's no headphones in it works perfectly fine

It could be bad headphones. Try another pair. It could be gunk in the headphone jack. Try cleaning it out. It could be a bad headphone jack. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.
