[SOLVED] How to start pulseaudio on boot without a DE or WM? (XBMC)

Hi Guys,
I run XBMC without a desktop environment or Window Manager, it launches via my .xinitrc as below:
exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs
I can use pulseaudio with xbmc if I run from an ssh session "/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11" after xbmc has loaded up.
My question is, how do I start this automatically? If I add /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 directly above the exec line in my .xinitrc XBMC seems to take a good deal longer to start.
Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks very much Vendion, I have tried as you suggested and it does work and XBMC loads up faster as a result of pulseaudio starting in the background. However this method leaves a defunct pulseaudio process after XBMC has started (along with the running pulseaudio processes). Is this normal when starting a process in the background from .xinitrc?
Out of curiosity, I have also tried another approach. I #'ed out the "/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 &"entry in the .xinitrc and added "/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11" (without the &) at the start of the /usr/bin/xbmc shell script that the exec line of the .xinitrc uses to launch xbmc and it loads just as fast as the suggested approach but minus the defunct pulseaudio process after xbmc starts. Weird, because if I try removing the & from the /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11" entry in .xintrc pulseaudio seems to hang on startup and /var/log/everything.log shows console kit timeout errors.
I am happy I have a fix for this now, I am just confused as to the behaviour encountered when trying to do this in the .xinitrc rather than editiing the xbmc launch script directly. Have you seen anything like this before?
Thanks again for all your help on this.

  • Help! How to start windows in boot camp?

    I have read several posts on this but I still cannot seem to get it started. I recently bought a macbook with bootcamp set up with windows xp. I had vmware fusion on my computer to use windows but I uninstalled it because I cannot use it for the purpose of windows that I need. Now, I do not know how to start windows on my computer. I cannot use a virtual machine because my exam software that I use for school will not start up when using a virtual machine.
    I restart my computer and hold down the option key and the only hard drive that shows up is the Mac HD. The boot camp drive does not show up. So, if I cannot start windows that way...is there any other way???
    THANKS!

    I cannot use a virtual machine because my exam software that I use for school will not start up when using a virtual machine.
    It requires DirectX 9? Huh?
    I restart my computer and hold down the option key and the only hard drive that shows up is the Mac HD.
    That sounds like your computer came with VM Fusion, and was not set up with boot camp. Please prove me wrong.
    First, how many disk icons are on your Mac OS desktop? Is there just the Macintosh HD icon, or is there another disk icon labelled, say, "Untitled" or "Boot Camp".
    Second, open /Applications/Disk Utility. Select your hard drive (not the Macintosh HD volume, but the actual hard drive, just above the Macintosh HD volume). Then click the "partition tab". How many partitions do you have. Does it show one HFS+ Journaled volume, or more than one partition and of what types.
    Third, if you did see a second disk icon in step one, select it and hit CMD-I. What is its used and free space? Open it in Finder: is there a boot.ini file? A Windows folder?
    Fourth--I should have thought of this first, sorry--some MacBooks have a bug that Option doesn't let you select an OS. So open Apple > System Preferences > Startup Disk and see if there is a Windows there for you to select. If so, select it and "reboot now" to boot into Windows. To boot back into Mac OS, you can either use the option key, or use the boot camp system tray icon to select Mac OS as your startup disk.
    Finally, did your computer come with a Windows XP CD?

  • How to start Lenovo Fullscreen Magnifier without Fn+Space key

    Hi,
    I use Lenovo Fulscreen Magnifier a lot, but sometimes I've got laptop closed connected to the external display and I need to run the utility. The problem is that the external keyboard doesn't have Fn key.
    I would like to know if there is any possibility to start a fullscreen magnifier without actually pressing Fn+Space? I mean to start it like an application from desktop shortcut for example.

    Well, this is simple.The problem is that after the latest BIOS update (May 2015), there is no such option in the BIOS anymore.In fact, many of the options i the BIOS are no longer there and I wonder how I will be able to set them with this new BIOS. Among those options disappeared from the BIOS, is also the hotkeys control.The idea of leaving that amount of useless space on top of the keyboard and omitting another row of keys in the keyboard in Lenovo 3 is stupid, because it had combined many frequent keys and those which most come in combinations already. Now I have to just add Fn key to a combination of two or three other keys which is rediculus (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+Home/End in MS Word for quickly selecting a paragraph of text...), but if a part of that stupidity can be reversed, it worth is. Now again, there is no such "Hotkeys Enable/Disable" option in the new version of BIOS released by Lenovo. Now what? How can I use Function keys without the hotkeys?

  • [SOLVED] How to start JACK with KDE 4? (and which JACK should I use?)

    Hi again
    I'm using KDE 4, and I've just installed JACK again, and since I can't find any decent documentation on this, I'm having a bit of a problem.
    Currently I have jack from [extra] installed, rather than jack2. When I try starting jack as the ArchWiki suggests, i.e. by typing "jackd -d alsa", I get the following error:
    $ jackd -d alsa

    cannot load driver module alsa
    I've also tried jack2 from [community], and after starting it with "jack_control start", I get this...
    $ jack_control start
    --- start
    DBus exception: org.jackaudio.Error.Generic: Failed to start server
    So how do I start it? I'm guessing jack doesn't want to start because some other KDE application grabbed alsa before jackd (but I've been wrong before), and I don't have the slightest idea what jack2 is about with that "generic" error. If anyone would help me shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it a lot.
    Thanks in advance!

    @schivmeister thanks that one worked
    Yes, it was knotify4. So now this part works. I've switched to jack2 and it works flawlessly when starting it with jackd
    So this part is solved... now, would you be so kind (if you know) as to point me to some tutorials or howtos (or proper documentation, cos I can't find much of that either) on how to connect various ALSA channels with JACK?
    Basically, I want to route my PCM channel and the Mic channel into Capture 1 (or one to Capture 1 and other to Capture 2), since my Intel HDA audio card doesn't have the "Mix" or "What-U-Hear" or whatever as an available capture source. Any leads on that? (or do I have to open another thread for it?)
    TIA

    This doesn't make sense. You would only get the Thunderbird error message if you manually tried to start TB while your autostart script was loading it. Either that, or you have it configured to autostart in two separate places.
    In any case, anonymous_user's suggestion is about as elegant as it gets. You could extend it slightly by having a single shell script sleep and then do the autostarting for you, but that is a minor variation on the same theme.
    If you do want a better solution, please try and express the functionality more clearly. Just saying that someone's proposed solution is not good enough without any concrete reasons why comes across as a little bit rude.
    No, I only have one because if I quit TB from startup list it doesn't start.
    The anonymous_user's suggestion yes it work but if I have a very slow computer and it takes over 10s or in the another way if I have a super computer and only takes 1s it will start too late(I think) I want a shell script that detect that a x11 and pulseaudio it's finished to start(or something like that).
    I'm sorry, english is not my native language it's not my intention to be a rude U.U

  • [SOLVED] Can't start pulseaudio with other users?

    I am having trouble getting pulseaudio to start using a different user. The user "corey" can run pulse just fine. After logging out and logging in on user "tv", running pulseaudio --start returns this error message:
    E [autospawn] core-util.c: Failed to create secure directory: Operation not permitted
    W [autospawn] lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.
    E [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to acquire autospawn lock
    So it seems this user does not have permission? I can't imagine why, both corey and tv are in the audio group and both had active consolekit sessions at the time.
    I don't know if this is relative information but I'll throw it out there anyway. I have a multiseat configuration with 2 seats, 1 at my desktop the other for my tv however for right now I am just logging into the display at my desktop. I followed most of the relative information about pulseaudio and multiseat from this page on the gentoo wiki (including editing the config files Xstartup and Xreset): here
    consolekit though seems to be acting wierd, right now ck-list-sessions produces this:
    Session3:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = 'Corey Teetor'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = FALSE
    x11-display = ':0'
    x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
    display-device = ''
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-02-17T06:19:44.835923Z'
    login-session-id = '4294967295'
    Session1:
    unix-user = '1001'
    realname = 'The Television'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = TRUE
    x11-display = ''
    x11-display-device = ''
    display-device = '/dev/tty1'
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-02-17T06:13:33.618814Z'
    login-session-id = '1'
    it says that the session for corey is not active even though i am logged in right now and pulse is running. I am a bit confused...please share your wisdom with me!

    However, within 32 bit chroot, I cannot use pulseaudio.

    I made this to work by the following steps:
    1. Install pulseaudio and alsa-plugin stuff in Arch32;
    2. Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa on Arch64 and enable "load-module module-native-protocol-tcp";
    3. Edit /etc/rc.d/pulseaudio and add a line "cp /var/run/pulse/.pulse-cookie /opt/arch32/etc/pulse-cookie" after pulseaudio line in 'start' part;
    4. Add some lines in /etc/hosts.allow on Arch64 (some of them may not be necessary) ;
    pulseaudio-native: 127.0.0.1
    pulseaudio-simple: 127.0.0.1
    pulseaudio-cli: 127.0.0.1
    pulseaudio-http: 127.0.0.1
    esound: 127.0.0.1
    5. Follow the "PulseAudio over Network" in Arch Wiki on Pulse audio http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pul … er_network and configure my Arch32 as a remote client on the network while setting the server address as 127.0.0.1;
    6. Restart Pulseaudio daemon on Arch64 and Run "paplay" on Arch32 to test.

  • How do you do dual boot without Dual activation for CS3?

    I know this has been discussed but I can't find the post called Daryl Pritchard, "Activating CS3 with both Vista and XP Pro on same system" #3, 21 May 2007 12:49 am .  That link seems to be dead.
    I'm slow to make the switch, but I'm planning to install Vista on the same box I've had XP Pro on.  I have a LOT of software on this box (it normally takes 34 hours to install everything from scratch) including VIsual Studio (2003, 2005, 2008), Lotus Notes designer (R6.5, R8), 3D Studio Max, etc. etc. etc.  I'm not ready to flip the switch and just run the Vista upgrade.  I want to dual boot with XP on one partition and Vista on the other, so that I can boot to XP if something doesn't seem to be running correctly under Vista.
    Here is my dilemna.  I also have Photoshop CS3 installed on my laptop, and I need it there because I travel every few weeks and still have to manipulate images.  I'd like to avoid deactivating licenses everytime I get on a plane or drive across town.  I don't want to have to use up both of my "activations" when I'm staying within the intent of the Eula - it's only going to be used on one machine.
    How has everyone else faced this challenge?  I know there are plenty of people with dual boot set ups.
    I'll deactivate Photoshop on XP Pro if I have to, but that's going to be a headache if I have to turn on the laptop everytime I work in XP on the desktop and need to modify a PSD image.

    I believe you can only deactivate/activate 20 times, precisely to keep
    people from swapping the two licenses amongst more than 2 computers, so
    deactivating on your travel-computer will only work for the next few times
    you do it.
    Depending on what things you do to your images, you might be able to get by
    with using Elements to work with the PSDs.  The newer versions of Elements
    lets you work with Layers so it may be ok.  Install the PSE trial and see
    how well it works.
    If you must have Photoshop, and one copy needs to be on your laptop, then
    you must choose dual-boot you want to use it on, and perhaps install the
    trial on the other bootable partition and if it works fine for everything,
    and at the end of 30-days, choose which one to keep activated, or decide
    that you can upgrade your XP.  I think you should attempt to upgrade it,
    anyway, just to see if it's even possible.   I think you can uninstall the
    upgrade if you do it right away, and get back to your XP...I had to do that
    when my graphics card refused to work, even though the Vista Upgrade Advisor
    didn't complain.  Installing Vista from scratch seemed to work.  I just
    bought a new HD and reinstalled everything.
    Another thing to consider is that Windows 7 will be available for retail
    purchase before Halloween and people like it better than Vista as far as
    running things faster, so maybe just skip Vista.  The only glitch I had was
    having to uninstall Nero's packet-writing (CDRW as a floppy) software after
    I upgraded to Vista and it didn't quite work and I had to use a Nero-clean
    utility to get rid of it.  It isn't compatible with Win7 and I could have
    gotten around the problem by merely uninstalling Nero before upgrading and
    putting it back, afterwards.  I have an older version of Nero was my actual
    problem.
    I am running the Win 7 Ultimate RTM from my MSDN subscription and like it a
    lot...more transparency and they finally combined the quick-links with the
    actual task-bar so you can just pin things down there and they are
    highlighted if they're running or not highlighted if not--sort of like a Mac
    has been doing for a while, but with much smaller icons if you want.

    Hi.
    I recently got my broadcom wireless card to work on my HP. It works fine, but every time i boot the system i got to start up my interface manually. First ifconfig wlan0 up then iwconfig wlan0 essid MyHomeNetwork, and finally dhcpcd wlan0. Is there a way to get this done on boot?

    There is an easier way you can do it in either /etc/rc.conf or /etc/conf.d/wireless.  Here are the instructions to do that:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wir … .2Frc.conf
    I use this on my laptop and it works like a charm.  Also, there is a nice GUI tool called "wlassistant" (you have to run it as root) that depends on the network daemon, unlike the other GUI wireless connection managers.  Great if you are hopping from network to network frequently.
