[SOLVED]installation: partition size FAIL, too small /var

Yeah, I managed to make a mess again.
I thought I had given the /var 15 GB and it turned out to be 1.5 GB, now I'm facing this situation:
[tomislav@shakenbake ~]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 14G 2.5G 11G 19% /
udev 10M 216K 9.8M 3% /dev
shm 1.9G 0 1.9G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 464M 23M 418M 6% /boot
/dev/sda3 1.4G 1.1G 327M 78% /var
/dev/sda6 274G 1.8G 258G 1% /home
[tomislav@shakenbake ~]$
the 78% filled var is a BIG mistake. What do I do now? Should I use rsync and do a system backup, resize the /home partition using the cfdisk command and an Archlinux live CD, then copy everything back? Do this just for these two partitions (home and var are adjacent)?
Can I use rsync in a way that it stores the partition information, although I will send everything onto a single partition on an external HDD?
Damn it. This is what happens when you hurry: the newbness deamons get you.

Hi, me again.
Everything works: I've managed to resize the partitions manually using cfdisk and creating the filesystems.
Still, "df -h" doesn't seem to notice the difference. I have written the partition table to disk during the cfdisk session, but something is wrong.
Here's "fdisk -l":
[root@shakenbake tomislav]# fdisk -l

here's "df -h":
[root@shakenbake tomislav]# df -h

and there's no swap in mount, although there is one in /etc/fstab:

[root@shakenbake tomislav]# mount

[root@shakenbake tomislav]#
I didn't have to change /etc/fstab because the names of the partitions and the file systems remained the same after resizing.
The only thing that I've missed was the swap being actually between /var and /home but I've just moved everything by deleting/recreating/reformatting.
Why doesn't the kernel read from the written new partition table and still shows the wrong (old) sizes for the partitions?
I have done a system update, just to be sure, and as above in the "df -h" output, I've seen that my /var is now over 80% full, although I have resized it to 10 GB.
Although the swap is not mounted, I have tested it by using "pm-hibernate" and it works perfectly. It gets mounted and the session gets saved. I have some brightness issues there, but that's another problem...
Any advice?

  • E50 Font size is too small

    yesterday I bought a Nokia E50. this is really nice one.
    I love it. but the problem is the font. Its too small. even some times I can't read it, if i am on move.
    I think NOKIA should solve this problem. Because its a major problem.
    Anyway, anybody know that how to change the font size?

    You will need some 3rd party software to increase the font size. Try this:

    Hi Mike
    I recall that earlier incarnations of the help viewer had a
    zoom setting that would allow for this. Sadly, it seems to have
    disappeared and I'm unsure why.
    Perhaps it will be helpful to know that you may view the

  • Firefox toolbar text size & icons too small

    Hello Firefox Help:
    I have Windows 7 Home Premium with Firefox 3.6.13.
    The icons and text is far too small in my toolbar. I used the add-on "Theme Font & Size Changer" and it helped with the text. However, all of icons are too small.
    I recall this being a problem with Windows XP Media Center 2005. Is this a "bug" with Firefox and Windows 7?
    How do I change the size of the icons?
    Thanks, k

    Increase the String pref layout.css.devPixelsPerPx from 1.0 to 2.0 in 0.1 steps to see what works best.<br />
    In current Firefox versions this pref is a String value parsed to a float and allows to fine tune the dimensions of all elements (user interface and web pages) more precisely.
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/about%3Aconfig
    If the content on websites needs to be adjusted after changing prefs then you can look at NoSquint or Default FullZoom Level.

  • The screen size is too small on the webpage created by QTSS publisher

    Hello,
    I published a video file using QTSS publisher.
    I'm using "Publish media to Quick Time Streaming Server (instant-on) and Webpage action "Auto-play in Web page".
    The screen size is fine when playing via the streaming link but when I create an actual webpage using QTSS publisher and dropping the movie file to that webpage, the screen size is extremely small while playing. Is there a way to make the playing screen size bigger in the webpage?
    The html looks like this:

  • [SOLVED] Gnome & Firefox: Fonts are too small

    Hi,
    I am really used to using firefox in Windows XP where fonts are readable out-of-the-box. By this I mean I didn't have to fiddle with firefox when I installed it, the fonts looked great.
    Now that I'm using Gnome, I see that firefox's fonts are really too small. The glyphs are smashed together too. How can I get the fonts to look decent in firefox? I'm not sure if this is an OS-level setting or a firefox-level setting.

    If you have an LCD monitor, try this:
    Copy & paste the code below into a file called

    [NOTE: It's a hidden file ! ]
    and save it in your home directory. Log out & in again and fire up The Fox !

  • Database backup file size is too small compare to actual database size

    Hi All,
    I know that backup file size can be smaller than actual DB size (i.e., MDF size + LDF size). But in my case i am observing huge difference.
    My Database size is 16 GB out of which 10 GB consumed by MDF and 6 GB consumed by LDF. But when i took the backup, the backup file size is only 1 GB!!!!!
    I am skeptical about whether i am doing anything wrong. Please advice me.

    Olaf is right it must be compressed backup:
    To check if the backup file is compressed or not
    RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file';
    Looks for column labelled "Compressed". 1 = compressed, 0 = not compressed.
    If you are skeptical about backup file you can verfiy whether a SQL database backup can be read and restored:
    RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file'
    If the backup is valid, the SQL Server Database Engine returns:
    The backup set on file 1 is valid

  • Disk utility fails to resize portable drive partitions with error message "requested change in size is too small".

    I am using a 1TB WD studio passport portable drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I have the portable drive partitioned into 4 volumes: 355 GB, 320 GB, 320 GB, & 4 GB.  But Disk Utility won't allow me to split the third of those into 160 GB /160 GB.  All volumes verify as seeming "to be okay".  Seems if Disk Utility could create me a 4GB partition that 160 GB is plenty big enough, right?  Something's not right; Can you help me with this please?

    What is on those partitions and or the partition you want to split in two?
    If you don't have any data on partitions or if you can save it someplace else for the time being then why not just Re-Partition the whole drive into the sizes you now want.

  • Why the files my program create are created twice each file double ? And why sometimes the files size are too small ?

    My program is using Queue of type Uri to create Queue of urls and then i'm using webbrowser to navigate each Uri from the Queue in it's turn and get the url(html) source content and save it to the hard disk.
    The problem is sometimes the text files on the hard disk are small like 90KB or 60KB and sometimes they are as they are suppose to be 300KB or 200KB.
    This is a button click event where i'm calling two methods:
    private void toolStripButton3_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    GetHtmls();
    CheckQueue();
    This is the GetHtmls method code:
    private Queue<Uri> myUrls = new Queue<Uri>();
    private bool isBusy = false;
    private void GetHtmls()
    for (int i = 1; i < 49; i++)
    adrBarTextBox.Text = sourceUrl + i;
    targetHtmls = (combinedHtmlsDir + "\\Html" + i + ".txt");
    Uri targetUri = new Uri(sourceUrl + i);
    myUrls.Enqueue(targetUri);
    sourceUrl contain website address: http://www.tapuz.co.il/forums2008/forumpage.aspx?forumid=393&pagenumber=
    And i'm adding to it the numbers and create the pages.
    And add them to the Queue.
    THen the CheckQueue method:
    Uri uri;
    private void CheckQueue()
    if (isBusy)
    return; // We're downloading some page right now, don't disturb
    isBusy = true; // OK, let's get started
    if (myUrls.Count == 0) // No more pages to download, we're done
    isBusy = false;
    return;
    uri = myUrls.Dequeue(); // Get one URL from queue
    getCurrentBrowser().Navigate(uri);
    It suppose to Navigate to each Uri(html address) in the Queue.
    And the browser document completed event:
    private void Form1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e)
    // If page loaded completly then do something
    int urlnumber = uri.ToString().IndexOf("pagenumber=");
    string number = uri.ToString().Substring(urlnumber + 11);
    int num = Int32.Parse(number);
    targetHtmls = (combinedHtmlsDir + "\\Html" + num + ".txt");
    StreamWriter writer = File.CreateText(targetHtmls);
    writer.Write(getCurrentBrowser().DocumentText);
    writer.Close();
    isBusy = false; // We're done
    CheckQueue(); // Check next page in queue
    In the completed event i'm getting the page number and build the string for the text file then write the html source content to the text file.
    In the end i have on my hard disk 48 text files.
    The problems are:
    1. Sometimes it seems like it's not finishing navigating to the current uri or maybe some other reason maybe server side problem and creating small size files with source content inside but not all the source content. Sometimes the text files size are each
    file 99KB or 70KB and sometimes the size of them are about 300KB and 200KB and this is the right sizes 300KB 200KB.
    2. The text files on my hard disk suppose to be 48 different files each file should contain the source if the html page of the 48 pages. But on my hard disk the 48 text files are duplicated for some reason.
    This is the file on my hard disk:
    Some of the files are 205KB 350KB 175KB and some of the files sizes are 85KB 94KB 35KB
    Why some of the files it didn't navigated to the end or maybe didn't got all the source ?
    And why it's making each second file the same like the one before ? It suppose to create 48 different files but i'm getting two identical files each navigation.

    I solved it now.
    This is what i did:
    It's a bit slow process since i'm waiting for each page to be loaded into the webbrowser but it does the work.

    any idea?
    I already checked if /usr/bin/bash is there, and yes, its there and working.
    Also the installation of all other packages work, only openldap seem to fail...

    I fixed it, stupid mistake.
    I edited /etc/nsswitch.conf and put ldap in there before installing ldap. Seems like this is _not_ an good idea
    thx for your help anyway

  • Font size is too small in flash applications and the "zoom" feature does not make any difference. Thanks

    Zoom dosen't work in flash applications and it is crazy small and too hard to read...this does beat out the fact you can't right click using flash in google chrome...I prefer firefox, but will go back to IE if it is the only program without such major bugs
    I have also reset the minimum text size in flash and that did not help the problem at all.

  • How can I use the bridge photos that are thumbnail size and place in Photoshop to edit, etc?  The size is too small, - how to enlarge without blur?

    When I use Bridge to transfer a photo into Photoshop, the size is thumbnail.  It is too tiny to edit into Photoshop.  How to enlarge without blur?

    That is the actual size of your image file. 48 x 38 is very small.
    That is not a Bridge or Photoshop problem.
    It is a very small image and you cannot enlarge it more than x 1.5.
    If you want a large photo you must ask for it from whoever gave it to you, or take a bigger photo if it is yours.

  • Interface Font Size is too small on hi-res monitor

    Ok, so I am new to this.. I just installed Photoshop CC and the font environment is ridiculously small. I need to change the font size so I can actually work with this application.
    I looked for help other than the forums and could not find any. I need help, please.

    I was afraid of there not being a solution since the issue has apparently been carried over several versions already without Adobe changing it despite many, many complaints. I need the App for a class I am taking and signed up for Adobe cloud. If Adobe doesn't feel like this issue is important enough I will simply start using GiMP after I am done with this subscription. As much as this application costs, I should not have to "live with it" quite honestly. There are other options which I will take advantage of after this class. It's too bad because I really like Adobe. but what the heck?
    Thanks for your help.
