[SOLVED] Kind of Bash-Timeout?

Hello everyone.
First I must say something good about Arch. I love this distribution and in my eyes its one of the (or even THE) best linux you can find.
I've got a strange problem with my Archbox. And since I even don't know how to call it, I can't find a similar post.
When I don't use my PC, for example while hearing music, the screen turns of after about 10 minutes. I recognized this behaviour in runlevel 3 and 5. My desktop is a openbox WM and no screensaver-tool.
I searched a lot in diverse configuration-files, but never found an entry whose name matched this behaviour.
Hope someone knows how to solve.
Big thanks in advantage,
armageddon
PS.: Please excuse my English, I'm a still learning german.

Welcome to arch and the forums
Probably you are seeing the "builtin" X screensaver. Try typing
xset q
in a terminal and look in the output for something like
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
timeout: 600 cycle: 600
If you want to deactivate just use "xset s off". Other options to xset allow you to configure the behaviour to your likes.

  • [SOLVED, kinda] Extremely weird ntfs issue

Here's the problem: I have an NTFS partition where I keep some video files. Browsing that partition in Windows, I can see and access all the files. When I mount it in Linux, however, most files are missing.
    Any ideas?

Umm... I think I solved this, kinda.
First I tried to unmount the disk, but it failed with:
    ~ sudo umount /dev/sda1
    umount: /dev/sda1: device is busy
So, I tried to find what is keeping it busy:
    fuser -m /dev/sda1
And it said "/bin/bash" was responsible! Weird, but I closed all my terminals, started urxvt and now I could umount!
At this point mounting manually solved all my problems. I can access the disk with its full content.

  • [SOLVED] alias or bash question

    Hello all,
I just need a liittle help on alias or bash
Right now, I want to run vim on xterm. So I always invoke
    xterm vim
Everything works fine but when I manually add a directory or a directory of a file, something like
    xterm vim /directory/of/file_here
    It won't work.
This is like manually opening a file in gvim or any app.
I just want vim to run on xterm.  This is like clicking a file and open with gvim ('xterm vim' in this case).
    I'm currently using KDEmod4.2

  • [SOLVED, kind of] VPN connection problems

    Hi guys,
I'm having a problem connecting to a VPN in KF5:
Until a couple days ago, I was using KDE4, and there I was still able to connect to a VPN (I'm using IPVanish), although after connecting to any VPN I always had to run the command
    # ip route add default dev tun0
for the NetworkManager to actually use the connection.
However, now with KF5, this doesn't seem to work anymore. All my VPN connections are listed in the applet, and connecting to any fo them also seems to work (it takes a few second, then the VPN connection is added to the "Active Connections" section), however, all my network traffic still goes through my "normal" connection. Running the above command after connecting to a VPN doesn't change anything.
Here is the log of NetworkManager, I can't spot anything unusual:

I'd be thankful for any hint or tip!
    Edit:
Okay, I figure out a way to use VPN:
NetworkManager somehow appears to have some problems with OpenVPN. I tried to set up a connection using PPTP (both are offered by the provider), and it works right away without doing any additional work.
It's not really a solution to the above problems, but it solves the issue for me...

Try going to www.whatismyip.com whilst it works, then double check when it doesn't. Router might be having its 'heartbeat' and changing IP's. Going to a static might work, or using something like dyndns.
Also, find out whay port your VPN uses then to to www.canyouseeme.org to check you can be seen from the outside world, if not, then could be port forwarding issue.
Both of these are kind of unlikely seeing as it is a daily thing that happens at the same time, however they would be worth checking just to make sure.
    Just my two cents

  • Big issues with Macbook and usb audio interfaces (solved) kinda

Apple has some sought of timeout on the keyboard/trackpad after about 10 seconds, when you go to use it again, it kind of surges the usb port so if you have a usb sound card plugged into the port that is sharing the keyboard/trackpad, you hear a popping noise. the full thread is below and has been archived for some reason so i cant add to it. ANYWAY, another driver called sidetrack 1.5 fixes this issue by not having a timeout coded into it. you can download it from ragingmenace.com

I just bought MBP C2D, hi everyone Scratch Live users!
Anyway, I tested for 3 days and no USB dropout was found. I just noticed a little freezing on the virtual decks, when I change the songs (the audio was still running).
    My set up is:
    - SSL USB connect to the side of the Firewire port (right side)
    - USB buffer is 2ms on SSL(Tried 1ms for 2 days with yellow USB sign on, 0ms is impossible for Mac, I dont know y!!!)
    - 1 Gig Ram (used 512 Mb for test on 1st 2 days, no problem was found)
    - USB HD (I stored all the song in USB HD) which connect on the left USB port
Hope its helpful and look forward for further test comments.

  • [SOLVED] Avahi mDNS host timeout

I’m at my parents place over Christmas, and they’ve got a lot of devices talking to each other using Avahi/Zeroconf. Avahi starts fine on my laptop, but for some reason the mDNS hostname resolution fails every time. There are no error messages from Avahi, and I can search for, say, HPPrinterModel.local and I can find it. But my own laptop doesn’t show up and just times out; searching by IP or hostname results in a timeout.
I’ve tried opening the required ports on the firewall (5353, 5354,?), I’ve tried reading through everything I can find (the wiki, Google, bug reports, etc), and yet I can’t seem to solve this. Has anyone else had problems like this?
EDIT: Avahi wasn’t configured correctly, and wasn’t publishing enough information. I’d turned it all off to stop my computer announcing itself to the world on public networks.

Ok, should have researched this more. This post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165913 led me to https://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyst … equired-1/
Basically, somehow, my /var/run was no longer symlinked to /run.
I ran the commands here after stopping all the services whose pids were in /var/run.
Then restarted and now avahi works again.

  • R8169 Module [Solved (kinda)]

I usually am in an office once a week when I have to hook my laptop to the wired (eth0) LAN port.  This always works just fine.  I didn't hook the laptop up last week.  Now this week I'm at a different office and trying to use the wired eth0 LAN port on my laptop and it doesn't work.
I boot with the LAN cable connected and I can see the lights on the LAN port flickering away -- UNTIL it starts loading modules.  Once the modules start loading (according to the colored, biiting screen) the LAN port just has all lights die.  I seem to be able to narrow it down to when the r8169 module loads.  Also, since between a working LAN connection and now one not working, there has been a kernel upgrade.  That's all that should have changed.
I did some searching on the internet and have tried:
    1)  booting with apci=off noapic
    2)  booting with pci=conf1
    3)  Making sure Windows wants hogging the Realtek LAN card (eth0 is a Realtek)
    4)  booting both with and without the LAN cable connected with all of the above.
    5)  Removing the r8169 module and reloading it.
I have NOT tried builind the r8169 driver from Realtek's website.  I wanted to see if anyone had any clues before I go that far.  The same laptop dual boots and booting into Windows gets on the network just fine, so it's not the port, cable or "hardware" it would seem.
    Any clues?

OK, I "solved" the problem -- kinda.
Reference this thread for information.... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/86798.
More specifically, this worked for me:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … omments/18
    That thread came from: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=538448
    If I run:
    mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD eth0
The card will start working, ifplugd picks it up and all is well.  It seems that something happened in the last couple of weeks to stop this thing working.  as best as I can tell things were fine in kernel 2.6.23.9-1, but since 12-xxx they seem to have stopped working.  I'm not blaming the kernel, though.

  • [SOLVED, kind of] UEFI bootable USB from ISO doesn't start

    Hi there,
out of curiosity I wanted to create an UEFI bootable usb stick with the latest Archiso 2013.01.04. I've followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO
    and created two directories
    # mkdir -p /mnt/{usb,iso}
Then I've mounted Archiso to /mnt/iso
    # mount -o loop Download/ISO-Images/archlinux-2013.01.04-dual.iso /mnt/iso
After this I used cfdisk to create a FAT32 filesystem /dev/sdb1 on the usb stick, followed by
    # awk 'BEGIN {FS="="} /archisolabel/ {print $3}' /mnt/iso/loader/entries/archiso-x86_64.conf | xargs mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb1 -n
Then I've mounted /dev/sdb1 to /mnt/usb and copied all iso-files there:
    # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
    # cp -r /mnt/iso/* /mnt/usb
    Followed by:
    # umount /mnt/{usb,iso}
    # sync
After rebooting and hitting F11 I was presented with the UEFI firmware-tool from which I can choose UEFI (and other) applications to start. I could choose my usb stick in UEFI mode, but - only the screen turned blank for the blink of a second and the UEFI tool was on again.
Because my system is already booting in UEFI mode using rEFInd, I wanted to try rEFInd on the usb stick instead of gummiboot.
    Following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO I've copied /usr/lib/refind/refind_x64.efi (from refind-efi 0.6.4-1) to /mnt/usb/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi and created a /mnt/usb/EFI/boot/refind.conf with this text:
    timeout 5
    textonly
    showtools about,reboot,shutdown,exit
    # scan_driver_dirs EFI/tools/drivers_x64
    scanfor manual,internal,external,optical
    scan_delay 1
    dont_scan_dirs EFI/boot
    max_tags 0
default_selection "Arch Linux Archiso x86_64 UEFI USB"
    menuentry "Arch Linux Archiso x86_64 UEFI USB" {
      loader /arch/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz
      initrd /arch/boot/x86_64/archiso.img
      ostype Linux
      graphics off
      options "pci=nocrs add_efi_memmap archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=ARCH_201301"
    menuentry "UEFI x86_64 Shell v2" {
      loader /EFI/shellx64_v2.efi
      graphics off
    menuentry "UEFI x86_64 Shell v1" {
      loader /EFI/shellx64_v1.efi
      graphics off
And yes, I've checked the "loader" and "initrd"-Paths - they are correct, as well as the archisolabel
But - again - after rebooting and hitting F11 I could select my usb stick as UEFI boot device, but all that happened was the screen going blank for the glimpse of a second and returning to the UEFI chooser.
Even my last attempt - keeping the original name refind_x64.efi in /mnt/usb/EFI/boot didn't help.
    Via efibootmgr I can see:
    $ sudo efibootmgr
    BootCurrent: 0001
    Timeout: 5 seconds
    BootOrder: 0001,0002,0007,0005,0006
    Boot0001* rEFInd 0.6.4-1
    Boot0002* rEFInd_recover
    Boot0005* Hard Drive
    Boot0006* USB
    Boot0007* UEFI: TOSHIBA TransMemory PMAP
with "Boot0007" as my usb stick.
So my question is: Did I miss something or have I found a bug ?

Hm, funny thing - now it's working, but I don't know why
I've tried to convert the partition table of the usb stick from MBR to GPT using cgdisk. There I had a problem with setting the partition type to EF00. It worked under cgdisk, but then I couldn't mount my usb stick (dev/sdb1) anymore to /mnt/usb. Then I've tried to set the partition type to vfat, but couldn't identify what is vfat under cgdisk . I've tried different types of "Windows" but whatever I tried, the usb stick won't mount on /mnt/usb.
    Journalctl always says:
    Jan 13 12:23:03 sushi sudo[727]: nihonto : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/nihonto ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/cgdisk /dev/sdb
Jan 13 12:23:03 sushi sudo[727]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user root by nihonto(uid=0)
Jan 13 12:23:11 sushi sudo[727]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user root
Jan 13 12:24:00 sushi su[972]: (to root) nihonto on /dev/pts/0
Jan 13 12:24:00 sushi su[972]: pam_unix(su:session): session opened for user root by nihonto(uid=1000)
Jan 13 12:24:18 sushi kernel: loop: module loaded
    Jan 13 12:24:18 sushi kernel: ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A
    Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb1): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem
    Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb1): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem
    Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb1): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem
Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: FAT-fs (sdb1): bogus number of reserved sectors
    Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: FAT-fs (sdb1): Can't find a valid FAT filesystem
Jan 13 12:24:35 sushi kernel: ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
So I tried it again with cfdisk which nagged about "unsupported GPT" but kept working. This time I choose "0C W95 FAT32 (LBA)" as partition type - maybe this did the trick because in my earlier attempts I did choose "0B W95 FAT32".
Anyway - after following the advice stated in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO and installing rEFInd to the usb stick I could boot the usb stick in UEFI mode
But - as I said earlier - I don't know what did the trick

How can i install this plugin? do i have to make a makefile, or can i get by it somehow easier?

    Allright, problem solved.
I made my way through the .sh file and all i needed to do was move a .api file to ~/plug_ins ... really dunno why they made an installer for this. but anyway, it's working

This has probably been beaten to death by now, and then some, but what the heck.. here goes anyway.

Mystery solved, the X-Fi Extreme Audio doesn't use the CA20K chip (X-Fi), but some mysterious CA060-WBTLF chip. The CA060 code also appears on the Li've! 24 bit and the Audigy SE, if that means anything.Message Edited by CreativeSkeptic on 03-23-20072:54 AM

  • Why, google, why? [solved - kind of]

let me preface by saying this is not a discussion about google and its practices, i dont want to start some kind of argument about privacy/paranoia
here is my situation.  I want to be able to open firefox, go to x.y.z webpage, and not have google loading for no reason.  let me describe what happens now.
    - open firefox (no homepage, no search box, no extensions).  netstat shows me no open connections.   so far so good.
    - visit archlinux, opens up "archlinux.org" (and lets say netstat shows me a connection to "archlinux.org" (I know that's not the actual server name)).  so far so good.
    - a few seconds into this, i see this:
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State User Inode PID/Program name Timer
    tcp 0 0 192.168.1.100:48738 iy-in-f100.google.c:www ESTABLISHED user 19146 3204/firefox-bin off (0.00/0/0)
ok so there's an open outgoing connection to google. why?  ok, i'm assuming (big assumption here based on other similar forums) that it has something to do with ads, or the search engine, or whatever.  I add the following to /etc/hosts:
    # [Google Inc]
    127.0.0.1 adwords.google.com #[Gmail ads]
    127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
    127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com #[Google AdWords]
    127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com
    127.0.0.1 ssl.google-analytics.com
    127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com #[Google Analytics]
    127.0.0.1 imageads.googleadservices.com #[TrackingCookie.Googleadservices]
    127.0.0.1 imageads1.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads2.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads3.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads4.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads5.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads6.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads7.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads8.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 imageads9.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 www.googleadservices.com
    127.0.0.1 show.googleadsenseagent.com
    127.0.0.1 www.googlecaches.com
(sorry if this seems wrong to some of you, this is my choice).  I also have noscript blocking everything it can on firefox.  close firefox, wait for all connections to close (60 seconds from what i've seen).  then run netstat again with the command
netstat -utoceewp (as root, though i dont think you need to be root)
the command above shows me the status/keep-alive timer of the connection.  well, the google connection has its timer set to off (which i take it to mean a persistent connection).  Why?
I close firefox, wait for all connections to close.  Ok, no connections again (other than ntp/smtp, not related to the discussion).
ok, let's assume that the open google connection is something to do with forum software, etc.  fine. I create a webpage on my own host, with absolutely nothing connecting to other sites.  netstat again shows the connection to my host, and closes after no activity. this is how it should be.  I close the tab and go back to a blank start page.  a few seconds later, as I check netstat (which is in continuous mode per the command above), i see a new connection open:
    tcp 0 0 192.168.1.100:48738 iy-in-f100.google.c:www ESTABLISHED user 19146 3204/firefox-bin off (0.00/0/0)
huh?? nothing is loading, no other network programs are open (again other than ntpd and mail are open, not using gmail).  sometimes i see this when i just open firefox with no webpage, after a few seconds of letting it sit there.  why, google, why??
so short of blocking google altogether, or disconnecting my network after loading each webpage I want (is there perhaps a firefox extension that does this? a "kill all connections" extension? ), can anyone explain what this is all about?
i've tried googling (!) but cant find anything about this (surprise surprise!).  Before you start calling me paranoid and overly worried about nothing, this is not about anything other than i want to have as much control as i can over what connections my computer opens to the world.  and i wouldnt have that much of an issue with it if there wasn't that strange connection opening when there are no webpages open and firefox is just sitting there doing nothing.
can anyone verify? or better yet, can anyone tell me how to stop this?  Thanks!
[edit] forgot to mention, I have searched for that host, and it is part of the google server farm, so it is an outgoing connection from firefox as noted in netstat, to google, for no reason that appears obvious to me.  and arch is pretty good, i was mainly using it as an example, as the google connection doesnt open from the arch servers (as far as i can tell it seems almost random unless i visit a webpage with obvious google tools/search boxes (or google itself obviously))

If it spits out errors you should read them.. They generally tell you what the script expects. I saved your prompt in test and passed it to the script:

  • [solved (kinda)] What's wrong with HAL?

I recently updated HAL to 0.5.13-3 and rebooted because of a kernel Upgrade during the same Syu. After reboot i couldn't access the input devices in X. It just dont worked. On TTY all was fine, but in X i had no input
After trying several things for a while, i downgraded HAL from  0.5.13-3 to  0.5.13-2 and all was fine again.
I put hal to IgnorePkg until i know what i need to do to get input working in X with newest HAL.
Of course i did some research. It seems that this problem does not affect all users and there are different solutions.
    Any hints?
    Kind regards,
    Dirk

Well, good Most people i ask about this answer "wfm" (well, they do not only say "wfm", but that's the conclusion *g*).
I downgraded and rebooted the system, and it worked. I only downgraded HAL and nothing other, so the problem is directly according to HAL 0.5.13-3 and does not appear on HAL 0.5.13-2. This is reproducible.
I could leave the package "hal" on IgnorePkg forever, but i guess that's not a good solution.

  • [SOLVED] Question about bash

The default .bashrc file looks like this. When installing rvm I noticed that it is not sourcing scripts under /etc/profile.d.
    # ~/.bashrc
    # If not running interactively, don't do anything
    [[ $- != *i* ]] && return
    alias ls='ls --color=auto'
    PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
I just solved my issue by adding the following code to .bashrc. I was just wondering if this should be done by default perhaps in the package that installs /etc/skel/.bashrc?
    if [ -f /etc/profile ]; then
    . /etc/profile

Seems that it is an rvm issue. After a bit of searching for rvm problems I found this post that gave me the rvm specific solution. This is probably the preferred fix since its just rvm that's the issue here.
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/40287/et … ng-sourced
The key is serveral posts down...
Installing RVM as multiuser requires the user to run this command:
    echo '[[ -s "/etc/profile.d/rvm.sh" ]] && . "/etc/profile.d/rvm.sh" # Load RVM function' >> ~/.bashrc
So I can remove the /etc/profile bit now. Thanks for stearing me in the right direction to fix this.
