[SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

My computer boots into total black screen after recent update, including linux-3.13.6-1, xf86-video-intel-2.99.910-1 and systemd-210-3.  I have tried all combinations of rollback, I find  linux-3.12.7-2  + systemd-208-2 resolves my problem.
As I dig on, I find it a problem with systemd-backlight. With running kernel-3.13 and systemd-{210,211},  disabling systemd-backlight service either through kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 or by masking systemd-backlight service can fix my problem.
Still, I am not the only one experiencing black screen and unresponsive X input with 3.13 kernel: several radeon user seem to have similar phenomenon but cannot be fixed by disabling backlight restore.  I would suspect restoring backlight is just one of many ways to trigger this issue, I not experienced in kernel, but I will try to debug the problem. Help will be appreciated.
There seems nothing wrong with X, but a problem with power management.

Hello! I seem to be having a similar problem to what is being discussed here. So I figured I would add what is going on with me.
I will try to keep it short but I apologize in advance for it being a bit long.
Hardware: 2006 Imac with Radeon mobility x1600
For me there was no problem before the systemd upgrade to 210 and the upgrade to 211 did not fix the problem of black screen on boot.
Also I upgraded my kernel from 3.13.5-1 to 3.13.6-1 after the problem with systemd started.
Downgrading systemd to 208.10 ( the kernel had been upgraded already) got the system working properly again.
I have since gone back to 211 and have found that:
If I wait for 5 - 10 minutes after the computer boots when I move the mouse the screen wakes up and I can unlock the screen and the computer works as normal.
Note: I am using gdm and gnome3. I think from this that my problem is a brightness/screen not being turned on issue?
If I add nomodeset to the kernel boot parameters the computer works but the Radeon drivers are not loaded.
and after booting with nomodeset if I use "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" my computer screen blacks and I have no response.
With both 210 and 211 I can press ctrl+alt+F2 type my username and password into the blind and give commands like "sudo reboot followed by the password" blindly to the computer and the computer will execute them.
I hope that this can be fixed soon... It is annoying at best.
EDIT
I tried  "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" again and found that I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a terminal login prompt that I can use and see! Although gdm login/gnome is still a black screen...

  • Mini guide and little preview window causing Black screen!!!

Everytime you bring up the little mini guide with the right arrow on your remote and then exit out of it and then bring up the big guide or any other menu like On Demand for example and then bring up the little preview window by clicking the B button on your remote the entire guide or other screen like On Demand goes completely black!! The quick fix is to restart the DVR box but as soon as you use the mini guide and then the litle preview window it happens all over again. It is happening on all 3 of my Arris XG1v1 boxes with updates  1.55.02 and 2.02p12s1. Are you guys seeing this also?  I hope this will be fixed soon as I use the preview window often.  Can a Comcast Tech look into this issue please. Thanks

Same here, even tried other people's boxes and they have it too.

I would suggest you try to update your iOS 8.0.2 to the latest iOS 8.1.0 with iTunes on your computer. Don't try to do the update on your iPhone, it takes time and some error always occur. After updating to iOS 8.1.0, if your iPhone can't restart properly, try Wondershare Dr.Fone for iOS trial version. It will say that your iPhone is not in normal mode, offering you the option 'restart the device'. Just click the button to let your iPhone restart.

hey i have an ipod touch 5gen ,it has stopped responding and is showing a blank black screen.when ever i connect it to itunes it gives a sound of the connection. what am i suppose to do?(ios7)

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you have a 2G iPod and did not have the iPod connected to a charging source it is likely that the battery fully drained before the erase was complete since it can take hours to do the delete.

  • [SOLVED] startx causes black screen?

I've installed Arch literally hundreds of times in Virtualbox, but this is my first time trying on a physical machine. I installed xf86-video-vesa and ran startx, and I got a black screen. It didn't quit back to the TTY, and I can't even switch to another TTY to kill it, I have to keep hard rebooting. I don't have a .xinitrc in my home directory. /etc/X11 contains twn, xinit, and xorg.conf.d.
I have an Intel HD 4000. What could be going wrong?
EDIT: I had read about Intel graphics being "plug-and-play", and I didn't realize I still had to install xf86-video-intel. This fixed it

Try disabling GDM in systemd.  Boot to a console and log in.  If things are still working, start GDM from the console.  If that fails, switch too another console, log in, and kill GDM.  There now may be useful information on the original console.  Were it my system I would actually log in from to the console, start a tmux session, flip to a second console, log in, attach to the tmux session, and then start GDM.  While it is starting, flip back to the original console and watch the telemetry go by in the other tmux screen.

    Black Screen (issue)
When installing EVGA GTX 650 ti SSC
Attempting to install an EVGA GTX 650 ti SSC into a HP h8-1455 that has a 460w Power Supply.  I've uninstalled the AMD 7570 Drivers and disabled the secure boot on the motherboard (EVGA support).  I'm leaning toward this being either a bios related problem or not enough power through the 6-pin connector.  I've tried two different video cards same issue.
    Any other ideas?

    MV, welcome to the forum.
I would be inclined to agree with your suggestion that it is an insufficient power problem.  All PSU's are not made the same.  The GTX versions require alot of raw power to operate properly.  The 460W PSU in the computer is made for the components installed at the factory with not much room for upgrading.
