a pacnew file is used when an update to a package requires a new configuration file, but there is already a configuration on your system which would be wrong to simply overwrite.
If there is nothing in the old, corresponding file you want to keep, it is okay for you to move the pacnew file and overwrite the old configuration.  If it is not okay, you need to incorporate your customizations into the pacnew file, and then move the pacnew file and overrwrite the old file.
The tools you mentioned are just that -- tools to help figure out what changed.  The easiest solution is just to run diff fileName fileName.pacnew to see the lines that changed.
Thanks for reply...I install vim and run diff:

I'm not sure if you can do that with CreatePDF.  Try it; you got one free use when you sign up with Acrobat.com
If not, you will have to use Adobe Acrobat; there is a full-use 30 days trial.

  • [SOLVED] .pacnew files

I just realized something that may have some bad consequences (Atleast, I think they might be bad, usually when I forget to do something on a Linux system it results in me reinstalling the entire OS).
I forgot to merge some files that are used by pacman, but I dont know how. I need to merge /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.pacnew. I also need to merge pacman.conf and pacman.conf.pacnew. I read some forum posts about this topic, but I did not fully understand then (I'm a noob). They were talking about programs like pacdiff and vimdiff. Should I use those programs? If so, how would I go about downloading and merging the 2 files?

If you're sticking around arch, or linux in general, you should learn to use these tools.  Vimdiff is wonderful ... but only if you already use vim.  If you don't use vim it will most likely just confuse the hell out of you.
For the time being or while your still learning to use these tools well, I'd recommend whatever text editor you are comfortable with.  If it's nano, use nano, or leafpad, or gedit, kate, any of them will work.  Open each file in one instance of the editor side by side.  The *.pacnew file will have the most up-to-date "defaults".  If you have not added or changed anything in your config files, then you can actually just move pacman.conf.pacnew to pacman.conf overwritting the latter.  But with the pacman.conf, you should also read it carefully as it may have some important instructions depending on when you last updated (about package signing and the like).  If you have changed your pacman.conf, you'll have to "merge" those changes.  All the diff/merge tools help in this process, but all it is is putting together the updates in the pacnew with the changes you have made.
The mirrorlist.pacnew is less important.  Mainly it just removed the ftp mirrors which (if you have a working system) you're most likely not using anyways.  If you use any mirrorlist tool like reflector, just delete the mirrorlist.pacnew.  Or if your current mirrorlist is working well - just delete the mirrorlist.pacnew.

  • How do I save markers to an MP3 file? Need help asap.

I add the markers to my wav file and save the wav file as my master. Then I save the wav file with the markers as an MP3 file. However, when I open up the MP3 file, there are no markers. I need the tracks to be on the MP3 file for digital downloads. how do I add markers on  an MP3 file so I can either
use that file to have as a digital download and/or burn a CD. Either way I use the file, I need to have the markers on the MP3 file. I really need help with this. I am working on a project that is time sensitive. Anyone that can help me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    No.
I've reread portions of the manual and it's kind of coufusing, but I think I figured it out
The manual states in order to save markers, you have to save non-audio data with the file. It also states it saves this as XMP info in an mp3.
I don't think the markers are a datatype that get exported with XMP info, at least from what I can tell becuase I have been unable to save an mp3 with the markers.
But, let's sidestep that. Right now, this isn't your issue. Your issue is you want to preserve track markings so when people download this mp3, they can listen to it as "tracks" rather than a continious MP3. The problem is not all mp3 software supports it, in fact, everything that does has it bolted on. So only a small percentage of people downloading the mp3 will be able to actually use that function. foobar2000 and winamp users, yeah, they could deal with an mp3 using an embedded cue....if you embedded the cuesheet as it required. Windows Media/iTunes people...they have absolutely no support for playing a long mp3 as tracks.
so, to begin with...what you want to do, is "technically impossible". CUE is not supported by id3v2 and is therefore not offically supported. Don't get angry at me, I did not write the mp3 specifications. You'll likely find that even if you do find a solution googling "embed cuesheet mp3", the results won't work the way you want or be a method thats universal. Regardless of how you do this....audition is not going to embed markers when you save as mp3. You'd have to export the markers to a cue-sheet somehow (which I haven't figured out how to do in audition because it appears it doesn't) and use an external program to embed them...or distribute the cue file with the mp3. milage will vary, majority of users probably wouldn't be able to make use of it.
The OTHER alternative...which is probably less supported than embedding a cue sheet to an mp3, is you CAN maintain makers and have a layer-3 bitstream...but you have to save the file as a .wav using an ACM WAV and use a layer 3 codec. Technically, you're creating a wav, but since wav can work technically as a container format, the audio content is mpeg layer 3...but, again....since things like Media Player or iTunes or even Winamp don't pay attention to them as they're extra information in the WAV header, this still doesn't give you the track-split function you're looking for.
there have only been loose standards defined by developers and users for what you want to do. while there are "open" ways of doing it, it's never gained much support.
the only way you can guarntee you can distrubte track'd mp3's is to split thing in to seperate files to begin with.
    sorry.

  • Having trouble with a audio file. Need help please!

    Hello.
This may sound funny and not to related to any of this at first, but if anyone here knows about the game portal, then they know about the ARG that went on during last week and may even still be continuing. None of thats really important but if anyone cares to know, basically VALVe released a new update with 30 new sounds, 26 of them moarse code/sstv pictures. 3 of them called dinosaur_fizzle 1 2 and 3. Infact, each one was named dino_1 dino_2 and so on.
The main sound that no ones been able to crack is called Dinosaur_noise. Its obvious there are voices in it and its some sort of major clue, this file is way out of league with the other ones. No ones solved it 100% or cleaned it enough to make basically anything audible.
Now this started March 1st. Since then i have worked hours on the audio file. I have gotten close, but not close enough.
Thats why im turning to someone here, that can do a through analysis of the audio that adobe or reaper just cannot do.
In the attachments is the original file itself with no editing what so ever.
    Heres some collected data.
    Frequencies of interest
An analysis was undertaken to find the strongest frequencies acting within "dinosaur_noise". Linear and Logarithmic curves showed sets of dominant figures, with the most being:
    Frequency (Hz)
    Comments
    9092
    Largest spike before silence
    7862
    Very faint
    7812
    Very faint
    7657
    Very faint
    7502
Largest spike in the 4000-9000Hz band
    3502
various noise between 3502 and 3510
    360
Another very visible wave. This was the most pronounced visible wave in the Logarithmic scale
    35
The most dominant low frequency wave
There are a few standout segments, not of voice data underneath, but visible clicks or something happening about 5 times. These could be indications of splices or other manipulations going on. The largest noticed broad-spectrum spikes were:
    Time(in samples)
    Comments
    55402
    First broad spike
    422931
    Second broad spike
    751643
    Third broad spike
    1081537
    Fourth broad spike
    1110841
    Fifth broad spike
Silence in the frequency ranges is located in the band of 10.567 - 15.337 KHz. All frequencies above that are likely to be high frequency poinoning from the FFT process.
    Heres what i know personally.
-Noise reduction makes it a lot worse and adds strange harmonics and artifacts.
    -Most filters do the same.
-Clear voice around 15 that says THATS AMAZING.
If anyone cares to help I would appreciate it so much.

  • I deleted all my iTunes files and need help recreating them.

    Hello everyone
I accidentlly deleted all the iTunes files (NOT the content, just the files iTunes uses in its database). When I tried to create a new database, iTunes moved all my my music videos into the Movies or Home videos, which I don't want. I have a copy of my folder set up that I want iTunes to use and to not alter (exactly as it was before I deleted the files). Here is what I thought I need to do. Please corect me if I am wrong:
    1. remove all the files that iTunes has relocated to different folders (IE, basically delete them all)
    2. copy the folders onto the drive I use for my media
    3. start itunes
4 unselect Keep my files organized
    5. scan the folders
    6. Select all the music and videos and classify them as "Music" or "Music Videos"
This should keep all the files in the same folders as the backup copy, without moving them to Videos or Home Videos. I assume this will also retain the current Artist / Album / Song hierarchy.
    Is this correct?
Any better way to do this?
    Thanks everyone who can help!
    JoHN

    1) If you bought them from Apple you canprobably download them again.
    2) If you back up your computer as you should, they will be on the backup.
    3) If you stop using your computer this instant (because as you use the computer it overwrites deleted files even if you have lots of space), buy recovery software ($100+), there is a  chance you can recover some of them, though they may have lost filenames and will be in quite a mess.

It seems like the above is an incredible obscure error message which should tell you that you've got a corrupted file system...
I had already ran fsck a couple of times and it always told me all my filesystems were ok, but desperate as I was I ran it once more on all my filesystems and now it fixed a bunch of errors on my home partition and arch booted... I don't really understand why fsck didn't do so the first time, but I'm happy I can finally boot arch again and continue working.
    Sorry for this useless-after-all post.

  • File Merging --- Need Help

    Greetings,
I am pretty new at this program, and I am trying to understand how to do my homework assignment. So I do not need the full code, just some help on how to get started.
I am trying to write a program that merges all files together whose names match a certain pattern, and writes the result to an output file. The input-file pattern will consist of a combination of "normal" filename characters and question marks (?). A question mark in the input-file pattern denotes a single-character "wild card". Thus, the pattern ab?c?.txt would denote all file names that consist of 9 characters such that:
the first two characters are ab
    the fourth character is c
the last four characters are .txt
For example, this would include filenames such as abxc7.txt and abqcc.txt.
So if there are files in a folder, for example, called abc.txt, adc.txt, cat.txt, and the contents of each has two similar lines of "This is File ZZZ" Where ZZZ represents the name of the file. Then running the program with the pattern a??.txt and the output file finished.txt will result in the file finished.txt having the contents
    This is file abc.txt.
    This is file abc.txt.
    This is file abd.txt.
    This is file abd.txt.
I don't really know where to begin here. Could you help me out? Thanks

Check out the API docs for java.io.File. It has methods to list all the files in a particular directory.
For the name matching, you can create a class that implements FileFilter or FileNameFilter that you then pass to these methods.
The filter's accept method would test the file name against your criteria.
(You wouldn't have to use the filter. You could just iterate over the files and compare each one yourself.)
To do the actual comparison, you could use the String.matches() method or you could just do the character by character comparison yourself.
If you google for java io tutorial you should find something that will help you with the File class, and java regex tutorial for String.match()
Break the problem into small pieces, and get each one working before moving onto the next.
First write a method that takes in a pattern "a?bc?.txt" and a String (that represents a filename) and returns true or false depending on whether it mathes.
Then write a method that takes the patten and an array or List of Strings or Files and uses the first method to return an array or List of Strings or Files that represents the subset of the original list that matched.
Post again if you have specific questions about specific parts that you don't understand or cant' get to work.

Hi rhayn, I think you're getting confused about what "file sharing" really is used for. You need to say to yourself "do I want someone on another machine to access these files?" If yes, you need file sharing; if no, forget about it.
So, the second user, are they on another machine or are they using the same mac as you?
Just as in windows, when you share a folder over the network, you can set different permissions on the "share" compared to the permissions on the files and folders themselves. In all cases, the most restrictive permissions apply. Therefore if you give read/write to the shared folder (the "share"), but a folder is read only (to the second user), they will be able to view the list of files in that folder, but not open them (equivalent to the windows permission called "list folder contents"). If the folder was read/write, the second user can create files and edit them. If the folder is read/write and existing files are read only, they can open them but not save changes. Where OS X differs from windows is the mechanism for setting permissions; OS X uses the unix/posix permission system. In addition, if you are the owner of the folder or file, you can always do anything with the folder or file.
All of the above paragraph is only information you need to use IF the other user is connecting to your mac from ANOTHER computer across a network.

  • My iBook has lost my files! Need help!

Yesterday I went to unlock my computer and the password box wouldn't come up all it showed was a spining color wheel, so I shut my computer down with the power button and restarted it. After I loged back in all of my files in my doc, picture, movies, and music folders along with my files on my desktop had disapeared. My hard drive still says the space is used up on my hard drive I just can not locate them anywhere. I have run disk utility and have not been successfull in recovering anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can recover/find my files again? Thanks in advance.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You can try and start the computer from the OSX installer disc#1 and
use the menu beneath the "Installer" by clicking on its name, to access
the part that says reset password. This may be a premature move, but
if you can find anything regarding your system before this, you may need
to see if you can do so by attempting an Archive and Install; and choose
to save your user permissions and information, so maybe a new system
could have your old account stuff in it. That may retain your old user folder.
Another idea (outside of the two or so packed together above) would be
to make a new user with Admin privileges and use that to see if the
system can be talked into finding your other files. Each user's files
have a certain inaccessibility from even an Admin's level of permissions.
I have and use OnyX software in my machines, and it does a
good job of keeping on top of system maintenance procedures
I am otherwise at a loss or too lazy to perform; it can do some
tasks to help clean up a system (but not wipe stuff) and keep
the time/date things working smoothly; and other tasks. I use it
a few times a month, usually when bored and the system's fine.
Preventative maintenance and repairing disk permissions can
help to keep things going well. Don't know really why, but it does.
[I know if/when the situation you have should arise in my computers, I
hope to have a working full computer hard drive clone available to go in
and irradicate the contents of the hard drive and replace it with a clone.
But any super-recent stuff would be lost unless automatic backups were
being made by a utility on the computer, making a backup to a FW HDD.
Mine do not have this last faculty. Mine is a full clone from a week ago.
Made manually, and when I did that, other utilities were run and the drive
was wiped, zeroed and reformatted; and the clone was re-cloned back.]
You may be able to see some "lost" files (but not open them) from a
new user account, by using a utility named What Size. This can find
things that take up disk space, and it also can delete things real easily.
It does not care what it deletes, but it can find things by size and location.

  • Canon 5D Mark II .mov file corrupt Need help

I have one file captured during a video session that I cannot copy, edit without locking the entire computer and having to hard start the machine. I need this file to finish editing a job. All the other files from this session work flawlessly with this one exception. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cant cut, paste, delete, save as, export, any function without crashing. When I try to export or save as it stops at a certain point and freezes the maching. Export not responding, save as not responding. Then I have to restart

It is because your 5D Mark II files are sRAW images, not raw. (The full 5D Mark II raw files are usually over 20 MB, not ~8 MB.) When you process sRAW files into DNG files, the DNG files are stored in the "linear DNG" format, which is much bigger than the sRAW format.
p.s., these questions should be directed to the Camera Raw, Lightroom, or DNG forums in the future to get a faster reply.

  • Customizing JFileChooser (File Size) Need Help

Can you help me with this. I want to customize my JFileChooser. I'm in a Windows environment so the file view that I see is same with that of the option pane of windows. What I would like to do is make the size that is viewed from the screen from ##KB to specific bytes size. (ex. 34421245). Can someone help me on this. I was able to see some codes on the net but those codes are not straightforward. They override the BasicFileChooserUI. Can someone help me on this. I don't want to override the BasicFileChooserUI instead I want to use the JFileChooser and change the size from ###KB to bytes. Thank you. ^_^

    Hi Rachel,
My best idea for that is to load the swf files externally, so
that each page is a different swf. A technique like this would be
very simple and quick to use, because it only loads what you need
    when you need it.
For example, you'd set the intro page to load right away, and
then when you select "At Work" the intro page unloads and is
replaced by the at work page.
Another thing you may want to consider is holding the images
in an xml file, and then using some basic flash/xml intergration to
load each image as it's called. That way each image isn't stored in
the flash file causing it to increase in size, and instead is
actually loaded externally which is must faster.
There are some great tutorials, if you're intrested, on how
to do both of these at:
    http://www.kirupa.com/
    Hope I helped some!

  • Possibly corrupt prefs.js file. Need help with this file please.

I've been having a problem with sending/receiving text messages in Yahoo Messenger and I think I've narrowed it to the prefs.js file in Firefox. I'm using Firefox 3.6.25 on Windows XP sp3. The Yahoo Messenger window would not open when the appropriate mobile phone link was clicked. I uninstalled/reinstalled flash without change. I cleared cache, etc., without change. I created a new Firefox profile and I was able to get the Yahoo Messenger window to open. When I copied the prefs.js file from the old profile to the new profile, I encountered the problem again. I opened the prefs.js file with wordpad and noticed that editing should occur in about:config in the currently running Firefox browser. I briefly compared the two about:config tabs from the working profile and the non-working profile. They were significantly different. How do I make a copy of one so that I can paste it into wordpad and make the editing of the other one easier? Where can I find information about the individual parameters and their settings?

    Hi,
    Please see [[http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries this.]
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config]
You can try to '''Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults:''' and '''Make Changes and Restart''' in the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Firefox Safe Mode] start screen which would also hopefully solve the issue. You can also try to manually '''Reset''' to defaults the modified entries by right-clicking on the bold entries (user set) in about:config. Clicking on the '''Status''' column header would sort the entries between user set (modified) and the defaults.
An easy way would be to create a [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles new profile] and [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile?s=profile&r=1&e=sph&as=s copy/transfer the needed personal data] from the old profile and start using the new profile. You can then delete or troubleshoot the old proile. Firefox stores your personal data and settings in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder another location (profile folder)] separate from its [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory folders/files]. A new profile would have the default Firefox settings in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window Options] and [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config], and usually would also be empty of '''Extensions''' and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' > '''Add-ons''', and their settings. Also, a new profile would have no previous stored website cache/cookies/data/preferences: '''Tools''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History '''Clear Recent History'''].

  • Lost Document folder while moving one file? Need help!

While attempting to move one file from my documents folder into Planbook the whole documents folder disappeared from the row icons on the bottom of the screen! Have had my MacBook Pro for a week and still find it confusing....not sure where document folder went but I need it! Hope someone can help!

Open Finder, New Finder Window from the menu options, and look in your Home folder. Or under Macintosh HD/User folder.
I take it from your description it is no longer in the Dock (row of icons at bottom of screen) where it usually is on the right hand side of that row.
