[SOLVED] Password prompt appears twice at boot up login

I boot up to the regular text login and startx manually. I recently updated after perhaps 4-5 days days and updated my /etc/*.conf.pacnew files as well.
After rebooting, I was presented with the text login, entered my username and password, and after pressing enter was presented with the same password prompt again. I re-entered my password and was presented with the prompt as usual. Any suggestions on what files might have led to this? I merged /etc/pam.d/login with /etc.pam.d/login.pacnew (which had many fewer lines). Could there be a line in there that's causing this? I'm not familiar with what controls the text login at boot.

Here is part of my auth.log . First I logged as a root on tty3 and then logged off and logged again as a regular user. Login session was started twice in both cases. The very end is unclear to me, some messages from gnome-shell. Not sure if they are related at all.

  • Screensaver password prompt appears by itself

I've just started noticing this problem a month or so ago and it is now becoming a security risk and major pain in the ***. I throw the mouse in the corner to start the saver, it starts and then randomly after a few seconds the password prompt appears. then goes away and appears again a few seconds after that!
anyone else seen this weird behavior and/or know how to resolve it?

    Not to be too pedantic...
I throw the mouse in the corner to start the saver, it starts and then randomly after a few seconds the password prompt appears.
I saw the word mouse and assumed you used one , and if the password prompt is appearing and not your desktop - the screen is locked.
Semantics does not solve the issue though, and hopefully KT's advice helps resolve this for you.
    Cheers

  • Firefox master password prompt appears randomly

Every time I open Firefox, the Master Password prompt appears randomly within about 30 seconds. Sometimes I'm still sitting on the home screen when I get the prompt.
I have tried to refresh Firefox, reinstall Firefox, I've turned my Master Password requirement on and off, restarted the computer... nothing seems to work.
I would either like the prompt right away, as soon as I open my browser, or when it is actually required, like when I open a login page. Not the current, seemingly random appearance that disrupts me in the middle of web browsing.
This bug is so annoying that it is a deal breaker for me. It's especially annoying when I am starting to type something, then the Master Password prompt appears without warning and takes the cursor focus with it. I have to stop what I'm doing, deal with the Master Password prompt, then get back to what I'm doing.
In the meantime, I've switched over to Chrome, which is serving my needs fine, but I would like to come back to Firefox if I can resolve this issue.

    Hi Will,
    Are you using Firefox Sync?
In order to keep your sync login details secure, you have to unlock your master password before Firefox can synchronise.

  • Firefox' remember password prompt appears as expected but doesn't allow to click on its first option.

Since I installed Firefox 20, everytime I visit a new site where I enter a login and password, it prompts me to remember the password as it always used to do. However, the only choice I have is to click on 'no' or 'later' from the pop-up menu. The first option 'remember password' doesn't work. It looks normal (i.e. not greyed out or anything), it is clickable, bun when clicked on it, nothing happens. The prompt dialogue stays open and the password wasn't remembered.
I already tried in safe mode, it's the same story.
Could someone please help me with this? I don't feel like having to remember all new passwords by heart...
    Thanks.

I also have this issue on my Dell XPS 15 laptop with the Nvidia Geforce 540M and the temporary fix is turning off hardware acceleration. I do believe that this should only be a temporary fix and that the Mozilla developers should figure out a way to work around this or fix this hardware acceleration issue with the nvidia geforce 540m.

  • Computer Shuts Down At BitLocker Boot Password Prompt

    Hi All,
I have been using this computer for almost 6 months now with absolutely no problems until I encrypted my system drive with BitLocker. I am not using a TPM. Now, almost every time I get to the password prompt for BitLocker at boot, my computer turns completely
off. I am using an ASUS Z97-E. ASUS tech support was completely useless and wanted to pass the blame instead of help, so I guess I'm on my own as far as their support.
I have read previously that this may be related to ASUS products. I cannot seem to get it to boot reliably. If I completely remove power from the machine by unplugging it, sometimes that will give me enough time to enter my password. If I don't, often, it
will only give me a couple seconds (and my password is pretty long) before shutting down.
I have tried disabling Secure Boot and that seemed to help at first but then the problem came right back.
There is a BIOS update available but I'm not confident it will fix the problem.
Are there any specific BIOS settings I can change to make BitLocker stop making my computer shut down? Any Windows settings I can change that might help?
I'd really like to keep my data encrypted but I'm not sure if this hassle is worth it.

    Hi,
Based on my research, this is a firmware problem. It does not matter what authentication method (TPM/without TPM/PIN+TPM/Password only/...) is used, it leaves you only some seconds before it shuts down.
It's recommend you contact ASUS tell them to try and reproduce it. They would need to fix their BIOS.
In addition, we could try to disable "fast startup" as below steps to see if it could be as a workaround:
1.In Control Panel, open the Power Options item.
2.Click the Choose what the power buttons do link.
3.Clear the Turn on fast startup (recommended) check box.
    4.Click Save Settings.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

  • When I start m/ff browser, the pop-up prompt asking for the master security password appears twice. It was not doing this before. What is wrong?

When I start the m/ff 3.6.3 browser, the pop-up prompt asking for the master security password appears twice. It was not doing this for the 1st month i had it, and it just started doing it all of a sudden. What could be wrong? O/S = Vista Home Prem.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Afew days ago

It could be this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499233 - - multiple master password prompts triggered by filling form logins in multiple tabs
If you have multiple tabs with form logins restoring when you restart Firefox, that could cause multiple master password prompts.
There may be other bug(s) causing multiple master password prompts. One way to make the master password a little more usable is the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9808/ StartupMaster] add-on, which prompts once for the password at startup, then never bothers you.

  • Administrator Password Prompt won't Appear

I just updated to 10.6 and now whenever I do anything that requires an administrator password (like software update), I don't get the Administrator Password Prompt.
    Expected Behavior
    1) Do something that requires administrator password
    2) Click on "Continue", "Yes", "I Agree", etc.
    3) Administrator Authorization Window pops up
    4) I enter my administrator password
    5) Things go on their merry way
    Actual Behavior:
    1) Do something that requires administrator password
    2) Click on "Continue", "Yes", "I Agree", etc.
    3) ... wait...
    4) Click on "Continue" again... just to be sure.
    5) ... wait...
    6) No administrator prompt appears
    7) Action requiring password doesn't continue.
Anyone have any hints? I've tried repairing disk permissions and verifying the disk, both of which turned up nothing.

I've seen reports that this behavior may be caused by a custom keyboard layout. do you use any? try switching to the US keyboard layout. if that does not help delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/byhost/com.apple.HIToolbox.* and log out/in. see if it works then.

  • GDM Password Prompt Does Not Appear

Alternate Title: systemctl: No space left on device.
I'll preface this by saying that GDM never has any trouble starting; this doesn't seem like the same issue as threads like this one.  But when trying to log in, after picking a user or typing in a username and pressing enter... nothing happens.  The password prompt never appears.  If I've clicked a user in the chooser, it will time out and go back to the chooser after a minute or so.
Whenever I start or stop GDM with systemctl, I get:

Same thing in a VT - marginally quicker, probably only 10-12 seconds...
    strace chokes at:

    read(0,
    /edit
I've rolled back to a vanilla prompt and that has fixed the problem. I'll mark the thread solved when I work out what the problematic prompt was breaking...

  • How do I get a supervisor password prompt to appear so I can configure the BIOS?

Question How do I access the BIOS setup on a Thinkpad T60?
    AnswerTo access the BIOS setup,
    1. Press the F1 key when the system boots
    2. You'll be prompted for the password.
    3. Enter your Supervisor password at the prompt
The Power on password prompt and the supervisor password prompt are the same
If a power on password was configured you would need to enter this afterwards, the same applies to HDD password.

You'll never get a supervisor prompt- I have PWR ON, HDD and Supervisor PWD.- If I want to enter to sipervisor mode, I have to enter the Supervisor PWD when asked for the Power On PWD....really tricky...

  • FaceTime, iMessage, etc., Password prompts repeatedly appear, despite dismissal.

I restarted my MacBook Pro some time after updating to the latest OSX, and I now cannot use this laptop at all without an endless parade of prompts asking for my FaceTime, iCloud, iMessage, etc., passwords. I hit "cancel" each and every time, and five seconds later, the prompts reappear one after the other. It is endless, despite disabling iCloud on all my devices to see if that helped. It did not. It has rendered this laptop completely unusable because the prompts float on top of whatever other apps I have open. I want to throw this piece of junk in the trash. Please tell me how to get these prompts to disappear already!

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select

If you use iCloud Keychain, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.

  • Clicking on user does not bring up password prompt in Fast Switch

I have two users on my mac mini running OS X 10.7.4, both are administrators. When I click on my username in the upper right hand corner of the screen and select the second user, I can type in the password and "rotate" on over to the other user. Any solution?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
