[SOLVED] Several keymaps broken in Bash

Update: This issue has disappeared.
At least the "us", "de-latin1" and "de-latin1-nodeadkeys" keymaps are broken for me in Bash. It's the same in X and in virtual consoles.
When I press "y", nothing happens. Only when I press another key the "y" is being printed followed by the other character I typed. It's like a dead key. Note that this happens even though "y" is placed differently in "us" and "de-latin1*".
In X the "y" is the only error I've found. In virtual consoles there are more keys that behave abnormally. In both de-latin1* keymaps "öäüß" all print different characters (foreign letters or punctuation).
Reloading the keymap with "loadkeys" in the virtual console didn't help.
Removing my .bashrc didn't help.
It doesn't matter if I set Bash as my default shell or if I open Bash from a zsh session.
A newly created user account experiences exactly the same behavior.
I haven't seen this error in other distributions on the same machine.
All three keymaps work fine in zsh, be it in X or in a virtual console.
I'm out of ideas on how to approach this issue.

The new user account should have been in emacs-mode as I didn't change it. My regular user is using vi-mode.
I'm pretty sure I didn't change /etc/inputrc:
# do not bell on tab-completion
#set bell-style none
set meta-flag on
set input-meta on
set convert-meta off
set output-meta on
$if mode=emacs
# for linux console and RH/Debian xterm
"\e[1~": beginning-of-line
"\e[4~": end-of-line
"\e[5~": beginning-of-history
"\e[6~": end-of-history
"\e[7~": beginning-of-line
"\e[3~": delete-char
"\e[2~": quoted-insert
"\e[5C": forward-word
"\e[5D": backward-word
"\e\e[C": forward-word
"\e\e[D": backward-word
"\e[1;5C": forward-word
"\e[1;5D": backward-word
# for rxvt
"\e[8~": end-of-line
# for non RH/Debian xterm, can't hurt for RH/DEbian xterm
"\eOH": beginning-of-line
"\eOF": end-of-line
# for freebsd console
"\e[H": beginning-of-line
"\e[F": end-of-line
$endif
The .inputrc from my regular user account shouldn't cause the newly created one to misbehave.
Any more info I can give?

  • [Solved] Severely broken system after update

I need help with system that doesn't boot after update.
I tried to make pacman -Syu on a system which was not updated since 2010 xmass... probably being overwhelmed by number of issues I did something wrong, but now the system is in a very bad state.
I think that the main issue was glibc update. I followed the instruction to install all other packages before glibc, but every second package was complaining about glibc (although they all updated). Then pacman became broken, but I solved this and finally everything got updated.
Everything looked fine right after update, but now the system is "unable to find root device" on boot.
I tried to boot with recent arch usb stick (cd drive is broken in the computer), but it doesn't boot (reboots right after "loading archiso.img"). I managed to boot with ubuntu usb stick. I chrooted to my arch partition using these instructions:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot#Change_root
then, following pacman wiki I reinstalled linux, mkinitcpio and systemd.
It didn't help. The last thing I can think of is to reinstall all packages via chroot. Is there any handy way to do this, taking into account that some packages could have been installed from AUR (I don't care about them at this point, but I wouldn't like this to stop me from reinstalling all other packages)?
    Any other ideas?

It's not a solution since arch installation usb stick doesn't work for me, as I mentioned above. I must either make this installation work, or move to ubuntu (gah!)
    edit:
I managed to boot. After the error message at the beginning I'm left with "you can type exit to continue booting, but it will most likely fail"... it doesn't fail, and system appears to be working normally (well, except some error about consolekit when X is starting, probably unrelated).
Now the question is how to avoid this error message at the beginning...

  • [Solved] Several problems after big update

Hello. Yesterday i made a pacman -Syu that upgraded many packages, after rebooting, i found out that many things got broken, like the keyboard, that got a strange keymap and i can't change it, at least not by the regular ways. Chromium doesn't start, file-roller gives a Gconf error, LibreOffice says that every document that i try to open is protected from editing by a unknown user, video streaming websites doesn't buffer any video and Firefox gives this error "There is not enough room on the disk to save /tmp/DMgQyMeY.part" when downloading .srt files (.rar files are downloaded with no error, but... empty) and the login (going from the login window to fully loaded desktop) is really slow.
I have been looking in pacman's log for packages that can push arch into widespread malfunctions when failling, but i'm kind of lost.

This is not the first time that it happend. There was 2 "strikes" long ago with the same troubles, and one of them included an unconfigurable 600x800 resolution. Both times i didn't found out the cause and waited several weeks using windows until another full pacman -Syu upgrade fixed everything (yes... the coward way), but this time i need to fix it soon... and since it's turning into an habit, i want to know what to do the next time.
thats all, sorry for the long post. thanks.

No, pacman said something about a problem with some packages, so i said "no" when it asked if i wanted to update pacman first. Later, i made another update and pacman said that i should do a pacman-db-upgrade, and i did that.
Anyhow, the other times that i had this problems, there was no pacman update conflicts with other packages.

i think so, but im not sure about / because of this output
    df -k
S.ficheros Bloques de 1K Usado Dispon Uso% Montado en
    udev 10240 244 9996 3% /dev
    /dev/sda4 9661440 9610912 0 100% /

    /dev/sda5 34898052 22993176 10132108 70% /home
its spanish, usado = used and Dispon = Available
looks like / is actually full, or at least is readed as being full,  it might be the cause of firefox not downloading files and not buffering videos right? both are stored in / ?.
And the de-compressed tmp files goes to / right? What about LibreOffice? is there any tmp file for it?
So, how can i free space on / without messing with some important stuff?
And there are still issues with chromium not loading , keyboard miss-configuration and  GUI session manager not loading. Does / being full have something to do with it?

  • [Solved] Help spotting broken links while using the shell

Hello, here I am again with another doubt (probably a very basic one ).
Is there any way to distinguish broken links from "good" links on the shell?
I'm using xfce and in thunar its very easy to spot that, it says broken link but I can't figure out how to see it easily on the shell.
I'm using bash by the way, just the way it comes out of the install.
    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately no, I have tried with --color=always and with --color=auto its exactly the same thing, last one is used in the default ls alias (alias ls='ls -lh --color=auto'). I have seen this functionality in other distros, maybe if I fiddle with the file that decides which color to give to what will do the trick but I have no idea where to start
It would be nice to see this "addition" included by default in arch, little things like this do matter a lot
    More on this ....
If I do dircolors -p both in arch and on a system where this is working the output looks the same, particularly this
ORPHAN 40;31;01 # symlink to nonexistent file, or non-stat'able file
... so I'm really lost here
Ok ... I think I solved it myself, so here it goes. In arch things are getting colorized by default but I have no clue where and how it selects the colors and on the other system I have tried (Fedora 7) the "default" isn't the same as in the dircolors default, but here there is a file with custom colors.
Anyway to solve this I have added
    eval `dircolors`
to my .bashrc and that did the trick, I have also added it into /etc/profile.bash just in case I create more users and want it to be already set.

  • [Solved] System completely broken after update

Today while updating my system as usual something went south terribly fast
Here's the pacman log of the update
    [2009-07-09 12:14] synchronizing package lists
[2009-07-09 12:14] starting full system upgrade

    [2009-07-09 12:18] upgraded mercurial (1.3-2 -> 1.3-3)
    [2009-07-09 12:18] upgraded sed (4.2-1 -> 4.2.1-1)
If I remember correctly the kernel-headers upgraded just fine, then with glibc something went wrong, I saw an error for glibc and some of the following packages that said something like:
"error: scriptlet failed to execute correctly"
After this the system became unresponsive and I could not even switch to to any consoles and I had to turn the pc off by force.
Trying to reboot is not an option as it will stop with a kernel panic with the error just before saying:
"kinit: /sbin/init: No such file or directory"
The file is there, I have confirmed it with an install image, I have tried (pacman -r) to try to reinstall some of the packages but it didn't work. I have also tried (pacman -r -Sy base) and that fails too with the scriptlet error.
This goes beyond what I can fix myself, any help solving this will be greatly appreciated.
    Edit:
    Fixed typos.
I have also tried to chroot into the partition but it doesn't work complaining it can't find /bin/bash (which is there also).
Meanwhile I have also tried to remove all base packages and reinstall them but it doesn't work too, the same scriptlet error, a clean install on another disk does work fine but I would like to avoid reinstalling everything again.
    Edit 2:
Solved by reinstalling, couldn't afford to wait too long before finding a solution.

Can't you installing anything ? it hears very badly
    pacman -Qo /sbin/init
    /sbin/init is owned by sysvinit-mod 2.86-2
If any better idea, than install a working toolchain with manually, copy the binary of them to the desired /bin /sbin, etc.. library.

  • Please solve this mysterious broken run arrow

Everything works great for a while. Then suddenly, this will happen. This is on a PXI chassis using a lot of LVOOP. It happened on my PC so I moved the code all to a VM. It worked fine for a while, then it just came back. These are NI's VIs. The weird thing is, if I diagram disable them, I still can't deploy. I get a broken run arrow right at the end of the deployment (when it says deploying Main), but when the broken run arrow is clicked I have the error list with no errors in it. Tried closing everything, still problem not solved.

How to Fix Your LabVIEW Failed to Compile or LabView Broken Arrow on Compile.
If you have a happy vi running in LabVIEW and it has a happy arrow then it SHOULD compile to an executable. RIGHT??!! NOT... Frequently, especially if the project is LARGE, it will not properly compile!
I show you how you can compile EVEN when you have a broken arrow!
When LabVIEW fails on building an executable it sometimes does not show you WHERE the error is. It also tells you that you need files that you are not using! Go figure! This is because some of the files are ignored that should not be ignored.
If you know how to get rid of the nag screen please let me know by sending an email to me at [email protected]

  • [Solved] Several installs and issues with DHCP issue every time.

    Edited: more concise information!
    Hi folks,
I was using Arch fine for months but decided to reinstall it fresh at the new year, but since then I have been plagued by connection issues. I install Arch and follow many of the tips found in these Wikis to set it up how I like then install preload and readahead.
    Post-Installation Tips
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pos … ation_Tips
    - LCD filtered fonts
    - Disable IPv6 (I use Chorus/NTL and they have a tip for improving Firefox that disables IPv6, so I think that this is not to blame)
    Laptop
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop
    - Battery state monitoring utilities (acpi)
    - Laptop-mode-toold
    - Powernowd
    Maximising Performance
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Max … erformance
    - Swapiness
    - Mount /tmp to RAM
My internet connection works fine, even when rebooting, but later I turn on my computer and WICD or networkmanager fails on "obtaining IP address. I really think that there is something in one of these tips that is causing this problem, but I am at a loss as to what. Like I say, I was using it happily for many months before these current issues. The only thing I did differently was systematically set up my computer with all the tips detailed above, where as before, I collected these tips over a period of time and did not do them all straight after installation. I have tried rolling back the changes and this has not fixed the issue.
I have had this issue over many reinstalls, using networkmanager or WICD and each time I was hoping that I was doing something wrong.  I have an Ubuntu and work Windows laptop that both work fine, so I don.t think it is anything to do with the connection itself.
I am not sure what information you would need so I thought I would post both of these files. If you would like anything else, give me a shout and i can post it.

    Hey Scott!
I don't know if it is helpful in any way but I have a similar problem with my desktop PC.
I have two ethernet controllers installed and somtimes I had a Ip address assigned and sometimes I didn't.
One which is connected to the router and a 2nd one I use sporadically to connect additional computers.
The dhcpcd would fail to load even if I followed steps suggested from other forum members.
My temporary fix was to run:
    # dhcpcd
    manually.
If this helps you might consider adding "dhcpcd" at the end of
    /etc/rc.d/network
I know it's not really a fix but it helps me to get a working connection whoch otherwise would fail - or work if lucky but i don't like lucky with network/internet ^^

  • [SOLVED]Ncurses applications broken

    Hi,
I have been using Arch Linux for about an year now. Its really is an awesome distro and I havent faced much problems with it, but for recently a minor bump. I spend most of my time in the console session using the ncurses based applications like finch, tmux, etc. However, recently after installing gnome, these applications appear broken. Instead of drawing lines, the draw a sequence of charachters, which kinda looks ugly. Though, they appear perfect in gnome-terminal/xterm. After, some googling, I found out it might be related to locale settings. In my rc.conf, LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8". Is there anything I am missing out? Any pointers? Appreciate your help.

    That would be mine... https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143439
And I wanna say that 'all those others' are pretty well hidden or maybe people just don't know to use clever keywords, like 'ncurses'...
Just pointing out that it is not just limited to ncurses. I had the same problem with mc (which i solved a few days ago), and it depends on slang.

  • [SOLVED] nfsroot install broken after kernel upgrade 3.5.6 to 3.6.2

It seems my nfsroot installations have broken after the kernel upgrade to 3.6.2.
This is as far as the boot process gets now (hand copied from the screen):
    IP-Config: eth0 complete (from 10.48.50.20):

Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.

It looks to me like the client is sending the mount request, the server accepts and then for some reason the client thinks it has failed. I can't even see anything strange in the wireshark traces comparing the working client (3.5.6) to the broken one (3.6.2).
Anyone else using nfsroot successfully with the latest kernel?
    Any other ideas?
(by the way - despite my directory names, this is using nfs v3 for the rootfs)

Just to confirm that I also have this problem with nfsroot (nfs4 this time) with 3.6.2. Downgrading the kernel does make it go away.
When it is working normally I do seem to get refused unmount messages at shutdown for some reason
refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for / (/): not exported
, but the /new_root bit is new and I have no idea where it comes from.
refused unmount request from 192.168.1.86 for /new_root (/): not exported
So I wonder if it asking for the wrong path.
That unmount issue will be solved by FS#32021.
Unfortunately, that doesn't help with mounting in the first place with 3.6.2

  • [SOLVED] Several problems with PulseAudio under Xfce4

So, yesterday I sat down to set up pulseaudio on my machine (I want to try and use it for my 'networked-audio system' of the future).
I was aware of the fact that pulseaudio does have several problems. particularly with ALSA-compatibility, but I was ready to give it a shot anyway and hope for the best.
Of course that did not happen...
I installed everything (including packages for backward compatibility with ALSA) and while sound still works (what a relief), I have several problems now:
    1. Pulseaudio does NOT save it's volume levels  - Volume levels for Pulseaudio are gone after next reboot, I was trying to look into this, but found no workable solution.
    2. Strange behaviour of apps when changing volume - This is REALLY annoying.
When I am in a music app for example (e.g. Banshee) and am trying to increase/decrease volume, the current sound (song) will 'mute' when I am moving the slider and only 'resume' after I release it.
    Any ideas are much appreciated,
    Thanks,
SOLVED: It seems that all my alsa channels were automatically muted when pulseaudio was first enabled.
Strange, Is this because pulseaudio wants you not to use alsa or something? :-)

I'm using just alsa now but when I used pulseaudio I used "pacmd" to set suitable volumes. Something like
pacmd set-default-volume (and then volumes in the range 0-65000?)
anyway, "pacmd info" will have the correct command.
I was not aware of this, very useful - Thank you.

  • [SOLVED] ConkySymbols font broken under KDE

Ever since the fontconfig update yesterday, the ConkySymbols font (http://wiltur.deviantart.com/#/d3ij3mi) is mysteriously broken for me. It just prints black rectangles instead.
All other fonts seem to be fine though. I've even downloaded the ConkySymbols .ttf again, but when I open the file in KDE Font Preview the preview pane stays blank.
How do I fix this? Of course it might also be due to the KDE 4.9.1 upgrade somehow, I'm not sure.

Great to hear the fix worked. To mark the thread as solved, just edit your first post and put [SOLVED] in the title. Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Suspend hotkey broken in gnome 3.2

    Hi,
After upgrading a lot of pacakges, many of them related to gnome 3.2, the hotkey for suspending stopped working. Suspending still works fine using the menu. I have an acer 3820TG laptop, and the hotkey use FN+F4 keys combination. What's strange, though, is that the rest of FN+XX hotkeys still work. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I am looking at the wiki for troubleshooting tips and possible workarounds, but haven't found the reason behind this problem yet. Any help is appreciated,
    jorges
Edit: The issue disappeared after upgrading the system

  • [SOLVED] Slight issue concerning pacman & bash completion

    Hi all,
I've come across a small issue when using the -Rs option with pacman.
The auto completion doesn't appear to be working for the first package name passed after the -Rs option.
For example, when issuing the command
    pacman -Rs firefox
and pressing tab twice, it will not show any options or auto-complete. However, if I add another package to be removed:
    pacman -Rs firefox chr
and hit the tab key twice, autocomplete will work, and it'll autocomplete to chromium.
Bash-completion (2.0-3) is installed, and the rest of the system is up to date. Am I missing something here, or have I stumbled upon a bug?

I don't know so much about it, but I'm under the impression that bash-completion for pacman (once enabled in ~/.bashrc by adding "complete -cf pacman") works by default by checking the user's PATH variable, i.e. it will offer to complete pacman commands with the name of any executable in the user's PATH's () as well as the contents of the current directory. ... which means: if firefox isn't installed, it won't find it; if it is, it will offer this completion; if there's a file called firefox in the current directory, it will also offer it.
but as I said, I'm not an expert on bash-completion

  • Using comparison operators to solve several different mathematical expressions is not clear

Though I found LabVIEW very interesting , still some of its basic fundamentals are not clear, like using comparison operators (>,<,..) for solving different

What I am looking for is how to use such functions in selecting different mathematical expressions i.e..(working like logical if statement).
You need to be more specific. A comparison operation IS like a logical IF statement and the result is either TRUE or FALSE.
What do you mean by a "mathematical expression"? What do you mean by "different"? Can you give an illustrative example?
If two alternative mathematical expressions should depend on the comparison, wire the comparison output to a case structure and place the two different expressions in their own case, for example.

  • [solved] sudo command in a Bash function?

    Hello there,
I need to use sudo inside of a Bash function in order to allow my laptop to hibernate after a certain time using "systemctl hibernate".
However, I cannot figure out what's the correct way to include sudo inside of my function snippet:
    function hibernate {
echo "System is going to hibernate in $1 minute(s)..."
    sleep $1m ; systemctl hibernate
alias hibernate_timer=sudo hibernate # sudo misplaced here
Last edited by orschiro (2013-06-26 20:33:47)

you'd need sudo's -E parameter for that, otherwise that function is not defined in the su environment.
    EDIT: -E is not sufficient.
man sudoers wrote:In all cases, environment variables with a value beginning with () are

         -V” when run as root.
You cannot pass functions to sudo - the alias is not relevant, you couldn't do this directly: `sudo hibernate` would fail.
I'd also recommend putting the sudo as "deep" as possible: right on the systemctl command.  There is a reason bash functions are not allowed to be 'sudo'ed - and running sudo on a function that includes a sleep command seem particularly bad to me.
