[SOLVED] SLiM locked in Virtual Box

So I installed the newest iso, got things ok in terminal and installed SLiM, but I'm stuck at the SLiM login. Neither root nor user works. I've tried console as username to force xterm, but all I get is a black screen with an X for a mouse. tried exit and nothing happened. I really need to get back to no GUI so I can edit the options for SLiM and get myself started. I'm going to be running Razor-QT on top of Openbox and SliM as login. Problem is I can't install Razor until I can visit the AUR..... Anyway, if someone can get me the hell out of slim I'd appreciate it.

You freaking rock bro. I'm sorry to be a pain in the ass to everyone, but most of my experience is in Ubuntu (I know that's like the f word) but I've run arch before and adored it, and have decided to use it as the base of a new distro which is like Bugtraq (I'm the graphics developer for the new version in dev) built on Arch for speed, so I'm I'm going to probably ask a lot of questions, however I am good at RTFM so I'll try not to ask any stupid questions.

  • [SOLVED] Guest Arch in Virtual Box Internet Problems

I have installed Arch a few times already in virtual machines on Virtual Box and each time it is unable to configure the internet connection properly.  Having gone through the beginner wiki-pages on starting with Arch, I have tried "ping -c 3 www.google.com" and get "ping: unknown host www.google.com".  However, IP addresses usually work with 0% packet loss.
I then followed the "hwdetect" instruction and that yielded "-bash: hwdetect: command not found".  The command "modprobe pcnet32" does not yield an error and returns nothing.
I have also tried other methods

    Hi,
    Pretty much the same here
That is strange but adding "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to /etc/resolv.conf enables me to access the internet. 192.168.0.1 is of course the IP of the host computer's vitual card but what is strange is: I need to use dhcpcd from guest to be given an IP that isn't even in the same range as 192.168.0.1 (for instance 10.0.2.15)!!
So to basically, host PC has that virtual ethernet card with static IP 192.168.0.1 and internet connection shared (don't know if this is compulsory though) and guest uses dhcp, is given 10.0.2.15 (don't ask me where it gets it from because I disabled it on VirtualBox). Then I just have to add "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to resolv.conf and I'm good... till dhcpcd rewrites the resolv.conf. How could we set dhcp to use a particular DNS?
As you can see, I am not a DNS expert. Using static IPs for both would be great but it doesn't work
    Does it help?
The 10.x.x.x.x address range is assigned because you are most probably using NAT networking on the Virtual Box configuration.
    Try with 'Bridged'.
If all goes well you shouldn't need to fiddle with /etc/resolv.conf.
Still, if you still need to change /etc/resolv.conf, put your changes in a file called /etc/resolv.conf.head which will survive
the changes that sometimes DHCP does on /etc/resolv.conf.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Guest Virtual Box OSE problem

So I am installing my Arch Linux as a Guest in my Ubuntu partition, through Virtual Box OSE (3.2.8). I followed the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … lBox_Guest ) but still have an issue:
sudo pacman -S kernel26-headers xorg gcc make
    sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
    sudo /mnt/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
But It fails on Shared folders, and cannot recognize X:
:: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions Kernel Modules [BUSY]
:: Building the main Guest Additions module [DONE]
:: Building the shared folder support module [FAIL]
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find otu what went wrong)
:: Warning: Unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers.
:: Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components [Done]
    /var/log/vboxadd-install.log states:
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9: error: unknown field 'clear_inode' specified in initalizer
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9 warning: initalization from incompatible pointer type.
Which is strange, because as far as I know, clear_inode is part of the linux headers.
Any idea why this is happening? Do I just need to update VirtualBox to a newer version?

Unfortunately the scanning software can't find the scanner and Windows Device Manager doesn't show a scanner.
Any ideas? By the way, this is the only thing standing in my way to be able to run 100% Linux and yes I know I could buy another scanner.:D

  • (solved?) Virtual Box, kernel26-bfs, 1000hz?

I switched to the bfs patched kernel, but I get an error when the kernel tries to load the virtualbox module. I assume this is because the default kernel is using a hz rate higher than 1000. I read 1000 is needed, or else you can break some things like virtual box. My question is how can I set the rate to 1000? I searched the grub page and looked around the bfs documentation and it seems everyone agrees to set the kernel hs to 1000 but how to do it doesn't seem to be discussed.
    Sorry for the newbie question!
    edit:
I may have solved it. I think I needed to recompile the kernel module and hopefully it will work on my next reboot automatically. I won't know until I reboot, and I can't until tomorrow. I may be back!
Last edited by Google (2010-09-28 12:05:07)

Regarding HZ, you set it in the kernel config when building the package (see the PKGBUILD). Another option is to use ck's patches which change the default from 250 to 1000.
And ... umm ... what is your rate anyways? The default is definitely not more than 1000.
I'm afraid I can't help you with VirtualBox as I know nothing about that.

    For reference..
pacman -Ql packageName shows what files a package contains.
You might add | grep bin or something of the sort after it to find the binaries quickly (sometimes.. some files contain 'bin' in the title or a folder name, obviously)
that question has been asked many times before. please learn to use Pacman, the Forum (and corresponding Search functions), and the Wiki before asking questions, and edit your first post to append [SOLVED] to the title when you find an appropriate answer to your questions.. it will save those of us looking to help time and frustration if you do all of that. thanks.

  • [solved] Virtual Box

I have windows 7 installed in a virtual box. It worked perfectly. Then I upgraded my system to the lastest linux kernel. Now Virtual Box says that vboxdrv is not loaded so I can't boot windows.
    When I did this:
    [meskarune@Lychee ~]$ modprobe vboxdrv
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave, it will be ignored in a future release.
    FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.
I tried to see if I could update virtual box...but yaourt is not finding it. There is another topic on that here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74843
should I try to update it manually and see if that helps? Is there something I need to do with the new kernel?

heh. ok now I feel dumb. Upgraded the package and saw the note:
"run vbox_build_module as root every time the kernel is upgraded"
    now it works.

howto use shared folders in Linux guests - http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15868
After installing the Guest Additions, you can use the Shared Folders Functionality. To access them, you have to define at least one in the VM settings. Open the VM Settings and go to Shared Folders. You can define them there. Click on the Add button and browse for a folder you want to share. Make sure that the name of the share doesn't contain any illegal characters like white spaces. Keep the name as simple as possible. In this howto, I will use the name share.
Now that you have defined a SF, it's time to mount it. Boot the Guest and open a terminal. Create a folder where you will mount it on. E.g. in your home folder. I will use ~/host for the mount point.
Now mount it with the following command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo mount -t vboxsf share ~/host
Note that with this, the default mount options are used and all files are owned by root. This can be changed by adding some mount options. Options are passed on with the -o parameter. You can use multiple options with one parameter, seperate the values with a comma. See the man page of mount for more info on which options you can use. The User Manual also notes the options compatible with the Shared Folders. To mount the SF so that you are the owner of the files, use this command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
        sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 share ~/host
If you want to have it mount automatically upon each boot, put the mount command in /etc/rc.local (Debian based distro's), or whatever script is run at the end of the boot process. The Shared Folders service should mount them automatically, but that doesn't always happen.
Using /etc/fstab has little effect, because that file is processed before the SF module is loaded and will fail to mount the share. Sometimes, the share does get mounted because the GA check for it when they are loaded upon boot, but it's very flaky, meaning it doesn't work most of the time. You're better of with the first option.

  • Virtual Box... [Solved]

Just updated my 64 bit arch to the latest everything. I have virtualbox_bin installed. I ran vbox_build_module as root. When I try to run my xp virtual machine i get this error:
Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-eth0' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
Failed to attach the network LUN (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
One of the kernel modules was not successfully loaded. Make sure that no kernel modules from an older version of VirtualBox exist. Then try to recompile and reload the kernel modules by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup doesn't work. Hence this post. I feel like i've fixed this problem before maybe, but searching around the net hasn't helped much nor has my memory been jogged. Ubuntu Forums: uninstall, reinstall
i have virtual box installed in /opt
    Thanks in advance.
PS. "jog your memory" is a really weird phrase...

It'll depend on which networking mode you're using on that guest. If you're using the default (NAT), you can simply reach your host os on the default gateway ip of the guest's network adapter.

  • ERROR installing MAC OSX onto my W510 Mint 9 Virtual Box.....

    Hi all,
Im running Linux Mint 9 & trying to install osx 10.6.3 via latest virtual box. (for viewing purposes only!!)  Ive tried it with Empire EFI, iBoot and Legacy boot cd.
All settings in VB are as tutorials that are out there on the web so im pretty sure my settings are ok. Once one of the above bootable discs loads it asks me to replace the disc with the msc os dvd (retail) and then press F5
So i wait for the osx disc to mount, wait for about 1-2 minutes (as advised),  press F5 and the disc starts spinning for about a second then stops.  The following error then comes up on the Virtual screen window:
    Block 0x18a96a sectors 0
this continues to scroll down the page then nothing. Im pretty much useless at pc's and i only use them for wmy work (CAD) Ive been getting help from a guy who is trying to step by step me through the installation process, he has installed it but running Ubuntu.
Here is the link to our blog he has created on his web page. (which i have to say a big thanks you to him for)
    Moderator edit; Link removed
So can anyone suggest why the disc is not loading from the DVD drive? possibly a simple setting on my w510?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
