[solved] SSD Vertex 2 + GPT + Grub2 = Confusion and failed install.

I just got a new 60gb Vertex 2 for my media center.  I spent all day reading up on SSDs and have failed to get the install to work.
From what I've read GPT is recommended.  GPT requires grub2 (or syslinux) and requires a 1mb partition to boot from bios.
I booted into a working system and used gdisk to format it as follows:
sda1 - ef02/bios boot 1mb
sda2 - swap 4gb (so I can use suspend)
sda3 - / 15gb
sda4 - /var 8gb
sda5 - /home 29gb
/tmp is mounted to ram in fstab.
I then rebooted using my arch install usb.  I skipped the "format disk" part and went straight to mountpoints.  I created my mountpoints accordingly (/, /home are ext4, /var is reiserfs) but ignored the first partition (bios boot).  Also, I'm using labels instead of UUID.
Packages installed fine and I made the few minor tweaks to my configs.  I skipped the bootloader install and installed grub2 according to the wiki.  It hung on installing grub2-common for over 20 minutes.  I ctrl+c it.  Try it again and the install completes almost instantly.
I try to modprobe dm-mod like the wiki says, but it fails telling me that some module shit doesn't exist.
I reboot and get to a hanging cursor.  That's it.
Other thoughts - I never marked a partition as "bootable" how do I do that when using gdisk?  Mebbe that's the problem?  (Maybe it's the beer...hmmm)
Thanks for any help you guys have to offer.  I'm off to bed but will be playing with this shit in the morning.

Ok, original problem solved.
Was unable to modprobe needed modules because I had to reboot first.  Which means I had to chroot in and the install Grub2 as outlined in the wiki.
Now  I just need to figure out the damn config file so it'll boot...but that's a new topic.  I'm off to see if I can figure out how to stop getting an "unable to determine major/minor" error.  I'm sure I'll be posting a new thread in a few hours .

  • Tried upgrading and failed, installed fresh and failed

Well, not a very good start.
I first tried upgrading Tiger to Leopard and got stuck in blue screen after the final reboot. I waited for an hour and nothing happened, no hard disk activity. Then I tried to boot in verbose mode and resolved nothing. Then I booted in safe mode and moved every non-apple kernel extension elsewhere from System/Library/Extensions. No results.
Then I formatted the whole hard disk and installed fresh Leopard. Now, after two hours it's in the personal data entry -phase, but macbook pro's -internal keyboard doesn't work-.
This sure is an adventure. Reminds me of installing Windows, in a way.

  • SSD and HDD Installed but it runs super slow? Please Help!

Hi, I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7
8gb of ram. My hard drive died in my mac and I decided to replace it with an SSD and installed an HDD in the optical bay following Ifixit instructions. I booted into internet recovery and installed Mountain Lion (as it would not let me do a straight Yosemite install from a flash drive I had made on my gf's macbook, because it couldn't authenticate). After booting up and declining the usual iCloud prompts, I rebooted and installed Yosemite from the USB. It took a while, but eventually i booted up.
I moved my home folder to the HDD a 7200rpm Western Digital Black, which is in the optical bay, (the SSD is a Samsung 340 Pro and is installed in the Drive bay). Everything appears to be functioning, but it's slower that it had ever been using Yosemite on the HDD that had died. It take 35-40 seconds just to open System Preferences. I have used First aid on both drives via the Recovery and repaired permissions on both. I have reset the ram using option-command-r-p. I have booted into Safe Mode and Restarted the computer multiple times. Just opening a second safari window causes the spinning wheel to go for ten seconds or so. If anyone knows anything I can do, please help! I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix this.
I'm really not sure what is going on. It seems to take a very long time to load a website, but after using safari for a bit, the app doesn't seem to have a problem responding to commands, just takes way too long to load anything. System preferences is all of a sudden crazy snappy, but is giving me the spinning rainbow wheel when I try and click on a pane saying "Could not load Users & Groups preference pane." After I click "okay" and try again it loads right up. Grrr.

    Etrecheck report if it helps:

  • [SOLVED] Wiki page for GPT disks and booting arch using UEFI

Hi guys, I am new to archlinux. I installed archlinux x86_64 just yesterday and I like its customisability. I also like arch wiki. Nowhere else have I seen such extensive documentation, especially about things like HAL, UDEV etc. with proper instructions. Thanks to all archers.
I have installed Archlinux x86_64 in my Dell India Studio 1537 laptop along with Windows 7 Professional x64. Both the OSes boot in UEFI-GPT setup (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 firmware booting from USB). I boot Archlinux using my own compiled grub2-bzr compiled for both BIOS and UEFI-x64. I have a 1 MB BIOS Boot Partition as required by grub2 for BIOS-GPT booting. My Archlinux system can boot both from bios and from uefi, while Windows can boot only using UEFI.
The official Archlinux installation guide talks about only MBR (or msdos disklabel) partitions and booting from BIOS based systems. With 2TB drives becoming common place and UEFI being implemented (search for Phoenix SecureCore Tiano's 1 second POST operation), I think a proper wiki page describing differences between MBR and GPT, why GPT is better, how to setup arch to boot from GPT. Another page describing steps to setup arch to boot from UEFI (either as a separate page or as an extension of GRUB2 wiki page) is also needed.
Some details regarding Pure GPT (not a Hybrid GPT/MBR setup) and/or UEFI setups :-
    Partitioning tools -
GNU Parted for filesystem related tasks
    GPT fdisk tool - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ ,  pacman -S gdisk (in extra repo) - for non-filesystem related tasks
util-linux-ng fdisk does not support GPT disks
Bootloader - GRUB2 - vanilla grub-legacy does not support GPT and does not support UEFI (Fedora's patched grub-legacy does support both GPT and UEFI) and syslinux does not support GPT (I may be wrong here - seems a gptmbr of syslinux does help in booting from gpt but not sure).
For GRUB2 - Need BIOS Boot Partition to embed GRUB2's core.img in GPT disks - size about 1 MB max - no filesystem
In GPT fdisk partition type code - EF02
In GNU Parted or GParted - bios_grub flag on
For UEFI-GPT booting this special partition is not needed as no embedding takes place. This is needed only in case of BIOS-GPT booting.
Incase of custom kernel configuration - enable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION for GPT support
CONFIG_EFI for UEFI support (for UEFI even above option required)
CONFIG_EFI_VARS for UEFI Runtime Variables support (optional)
Note: Although GPT is part of UEFI specification, a UEFI system is not needed to boot from/use GPT. BIOS based GPT booting is possible with GRUB2 or Fedora's patched grub-legacy (but not vanilla grub-legacy provided by archlinux). It is also possible to boot Linux in UEFI-MBR setup (again using grub2) but I have not tried it.
Even without UEFI and less than 2TB harddrives, GPT based partitioning has many advantages - secondary GPT header and Partition table, CRC32 checksums. Unique Disk GUID and Filesystem-independent Unique Partition GUIDs, multiple primary partitions (default is 128 partitions, but it can be changed). The only problamatic OS is Windows which does not allow GPT booing unless one has UEFI based system. It allows only UEFI-GPT or BIOS-MBR setups. In linux it just depends on how the bootloader is configured - not a problem with grub2.
I also propose that incase of Auto-prepare Hard Drive, the installer default to GPT for "archlinux only" installs ( ie no dual-boot or triple-boot etc.).
I did not use the official archlinux iso but used archboot 2010.04 R3 as it gave an option of installing to GPT and also provided GRUB2 during bootloader install. I have never edited any wiki page before, thats why I request some one else to start a wiki page with the information given above.
I don't know whether this is the right place, but any Windows (Vista or 7 x64 versions) and Linux dual-boot user who has UEFI-based system with GPT partitioning and wants to get rid of Hybrid MBR setup (to boot Windows) can follow this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofive … hp/t186440 (outside this forum) - this link describes the way to make Windows boot natively in UEFI-GPT setup. After doing this one can install arch using GRUB2 compiled for UEFI x86_64, and Windows will also see

Welcome to arch, skodabenz! Offering documentation on third post - all thumbs up
You could start the wiki page in your user-space with what you have, and then invite others to join working on it. Just register a wiki account, navigate to the page you want to start, for example:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:skodabenz/GPT
and click on "edit this page".
As noted in the other thread, arch's legacy grub is patched for gpt support. I don't know about UEFI, but you can always open a bug report asking for the patches from fedora to be included.
edit: the page from Rod Smith is a great resource. I was absolutely terrified at first by all this screwed up GPT/MBR stuff when I tried triple-booting Arch, Win and OS x, but he really does a great job explaining what it is all about.

  • [Solved?] Thunderbird Lightning, GPT vs MBR partitioning?

I sync some data files between my desktop Arch install (MBR) and my netbook (newly partitioned as GPT).
I've been using Dropbox for the last year or so with no problems.
Since re-partitioning the SSD's on my eeePC1000 and re-installing Arch the calendar file in ".thunderbird/xxxxx.default/calendar-file/local.sqlite" is larger on the GPT setup (286KB vs 189KB) than on the desktop and they are no longer readable on the alternate machine.
I ended up exporting the individual calendars (Bills, Income, Birthdays, etc) one at a time from the desktop install and importing them into Lightning on the netbook. Now at least the calendar is function in the netbook but I've lost the compatibility.
Anyone explain what's going on? Haven't found any other glitches yet. KMyMoney is fine, Krecipes works, Gramps is ok.
    Help?

@cylverbak: wow, that is insane. I can't even imagine what's going on at the moment. I will say that I'm almost certain it's not related to the partitioning scheme. If partitioning schemes changed files somehow, I can't figure you could so anything between computers, right?
I might need you to re-write once more what you've tried, just so I get it. It sounds like you have:
    - desktop running arch and aptosid distros
    - netbook running arch
You export from desktop -> laptop and it works. But then whatever the laptop is producing via the import step no longer will be read on the desktop?
Can you also specify how you are importing into Thunderbird? For example, I used to "sync" Thunderbird between OS X and Linux partitions on the same computer. I set it up on OS X, and then when I set it up on Linux, I just edited the various directory fields to point to the right place on the OS X partition. I haven't used Thunderbird in so long I don't know anything about how it opens individual files. For example could there just be a mismatch between the "owner" or profile of the file which is preventing you from using it?
Oh, and lastly if you could list the actual files/dir structure you're copying. That would help as well. In other words:
    - I copy ~/.thunderbird/profiles/default.abcdefy/blah/blah.sqlite to a flash drive
    - I take that to my desktop and from Thunderbird try a simple File -> Open
Or whatever. I think the more specifics the better!

  • EFI+GPT+GRUB2 info

Note: This post is intended for people who want to install Arch Linux to a GPT-formatted drive which boots via UEFI using GRUB2. I mention OpenSuSE's configuration only as a helpful guide.
MOD: Please move to another section if you see fit.
For those wanting to learn more about installing to a GPT-formatted drive which boots via EFI using GRUB2, OpenSuSE now offers those install options if you use the DVD installation. I'm not sugggesting that anyone move from Arch to OpenSuSE (it seems very slow by comparison), but, if you have a spare drive and the time to do a quick automated installation, you can at least see a clear example of one way the configuration is set up.
For my part, this was helpful, as I was having trouble putting the necessary information together from the wiki and from several forum posts. But I'm not the brightest spark around.
I used OpenSuSE Build 315 for 64-bit systems. I think this is considered a build in development, i.e., not released. I don't know if the official release offers the same level of EFI-GPT-GRUB2 support or not. It may.
The installation DVD will boot on a UEFI system, which isn't true of many distros' installation disks.
Last edited by dhave (2012-04-21 21:32:02)

Also, build 315 of OpenSuSE comes with kernel 3.3, which supports the sort of direct booting (i.e., no bootloader!) discussed in this thread:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136833
You may be able to tweak the standard configuration so as to test loader-less booting. I haven't had time to try this yet.

  • Attempting to upgrade Yogo Pro 2 SSD to larger one by cloning (and obviously failing)

    The laptop: Yoga Pro 2
    OS: Windows 8.1
Situation: The laptop comes with a Samsung 128gb ssd (mSATA).  I used this space up, and need to upgrade to a larger SSD.
Solution: I bought a Crucial M550 256gb ssd from MicroCenter for $159, and a Kingwin KM-U3MSATA USB 3.0 Mini SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter.  I downloaded a few free cloning programs, EaseUS, Acronis and Macrium Reflect.
Problem:  OK, so i have cloned a few HDD's in my day.  Never once had a problem transferring full cloning to a new larger drive.  But this time I am having all kinds of problems.
    Process-
    1) I stick 256GB card in Kingwin Enclosure.
    2) I plug enclosure into USB 3.0 slot on Yoga.
    3) I select Disk Management
    4) Disk management says it needs to initialize disk before using.  Asks me to choose either MBR or GBT.  I choose what is preslected- GBT.
    5) Disk appears now in Disk Management as Unallocated.
    6) Open up EaseUS, and select the cloning option.
    7) Choose all the partitions in the first section, and my new 256gb drive as the option to clone them too.  I leave uncheced "optimize for ssd" and something else about sector stuff.
    8) All seems to be going well.  Sectors start writing.
    9) Then for some flipping reason it stops writing, maybe halfway through.  I get an error code.
    10) I send the error code back to EaseUS.  Its rejected as undeliverable.
    11) I delete the partition, which now is coming up as a RAW format.
    12) I try to repeat the process, sometimes with little to no success.
I did return the SSD back to microcenter to swap for a new one.  That didn't seem to help matters.
So can anyone offer any help for a desperate Yoga fan?  It's not supposed to be this hard, is it?  What am I missing?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK so if anyone wants to know, maybe you are experiencing the same problem, I have found a soltion for this, that worked for me anyways.
I was attempting to do a full disc clone, outlined the the procedures above.
I tried SEVERAL different cloning programs, and all came up with the same problem- It would stop working midway through a clone.
I thought it was maybe a setting on my laptop- Maybe the USB port, SSD etc is set to turn off at a certain time.
Nope.  I changed all these settings, and it was for nothing.
So as a last resort I chose to image my SDD instead of cloning it.
It required I send the file to my Desktop computer (it had enough memory available, so I found my Desktop on the Network and sent the image to a public folder.
Then I used my Kingwin USB SSD adapter, plugged it into Desktop, and wrote the Image file to it using EaseUS software.
Plugged the larger SSD into my Yoga, and it went through all four original bottable media options in DOS, denying me every time, but after proceding it allowed me to choose the Crucial 256GB SSD afterwards.  Booted right up.
I did have to use AOMEI Partition to merge the unallocated space with the imaged Partitions, but afterwards I am all set.
Still no idea why I couldn't just do a simple system clone.

  • The design of this website is confusing and hard to use.

Adobe are regarded as the industry standard of design software, so it seems ironic (or embarrassing) that this website is so poorly designed. I came here simply wanting to post a question about Flash Player but found it the whole experience to be confusing, bewildering and frustrating.
I will list my ten major criticisms below:
    1. ILLEGIBLE FONTS
Many of the site's styles (eg discussion titles) use horribly small fonts, to the point of being illegible and nauseating at normal viewing distance. I have to lean forwards towards the screen to read it. I have never had this issue with any other site I visit. The font used is not a screen font and is simply not suitable for being displayed at that size and looks quite ugly (eg lower case 'e' has no hole). In addition, some of the styles use almost illegible colors (eg gray on lighter gray). This kind of "minuscule" typography might be perfect for a small space (eg application control panels), but for a website displayed on a modern computer monitor (at least 1920 pixels wide) it is totally inappropriate. And my monitor is large, I dread to think how small the text would look on a small screen.
    2. UNCOMFORTABLE LAYOUT
The layout spans the whole width of the screen, making it very uncomfortable to use the site. All the important elements are aligned either to the left or the right of the screen, with a vast gap in the middle, meaning that one has to constantly dart one's eyes (or neck) back and forth, which is made even worse by the small font size which requires a person to "move in" towards the screen.
    3. LACK OF PAGE TITLES
To add to the sense of disorientation, many of the key pages don't have a title, so you simply do not know where you are or what you are looking at. For example if you go to the main list of all the communities (forums.adobe.com/places), there is no title; nothing to tell you what you are looking at. Likewise, if you do a search, there is no title (eg "Search results"). Having titles at the top of pages is fundamental to web design so people don't get confused about where they are.
    4. THE "FORUMS" DON'T LOOK LIKE FORUMS
I was brought to the "Using Flash Player" page by an external link, and when I arrived I was just totally confused about where I was and what I was looking at. The page title "Using Flash Player" didn't tell me I was in a discussion community. The page is littered with so many different links and features it is hard to know where to look and what the purpose of the page is. The page does not have a sense of being a discussion forum. I expect a discussion forum to have the word "discussion" somewhere at the top, with a list of threads and information such as last post, replies, views, as well as a way to see how many threads there are in that forum and a way to navigate between pages and see older threads. Not to mention all the strange buttons which I will mention in my next point…
    5. MYSTERIOUS BUTTONS
A good website uses terminology and controls that people recognize and understand. But all the buttons on this site are strange. At the top of each discussion forum we have "Overview", "Content", "People", "Sub-communities" and "Follow". I can honestly say I have no idea what any of those mean or do (with the exception of "Sub-communities"). Websites should use clear, unambiguous language so that people know what the controls do and are not clicking on the "unknown". If your site does have unconventional controls that people are not going to be familiar with, you should have tooltip popups which explain, to make it easy for newcomers. I have clicked on those strange buttons but on the whole I have not been able to work out what they do. The "People" button would seem to be a way of finding users/members but surely that is a rare function and it should be at the foot of the page not in a prominent location? Likewise when you do a search, you must choose whether to search for "Content", "People" or "Communities". Most people will have no idea what the first two of these options mean, I certainly don't. It's just a very weird site.
    6. INCONSISTENT LAYOUT
Another confusing thing is that there seem to be as many page layouts as there are pages! Every different page I have been to has no common elements or common menus, everything changes. Even different community pages have different features and different layouts. This leaves you feeling totally disoriented. A website's basic controls and menus should not keep shifting around, it leaves the user with no sense of continuity; it cripples their understanding of how the site functions; and it prohibits them from distinguishing between a page's controls and its content, since both keep changing around.
    7. BUGGY
I am less critical of bugs because I know that inevitably they happen, and likewise will inevitably be resolved. But in my brief time using the forums I came across plenty of bugs, two are on the main welcome page:
    A) First of all, a pop-up box appears which says "Say Something" inviting me to click on the pencil icon. I then click on the pencil icon and another box appears with options. However, the "Say Something" box is still there and it obscures the box below it. You can't click on it, so you have to click off both boxes, then the "Say Something" box is active again, then you can click on the small "skip" button, and then finally you can click on the pencil icon again and see what was there all along. Not a serious bug, but clumsy.
    B) Also on the welcome screen there is a link at the top which says "New to the community? Check out our guidelines". I didn't hesitate to click on this because by this point I felt totally lost and confused and wanted all the help I could get. I clicked on that button and it took me to a page called Community Guidelines. I clicked on the first link ("Find answers to questions") which took me to an error page ("Unauthorized. Access to this community or content is restricted. If you think this is a mistake, please contact your administrator or the person who directed you here.
    8. TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Finally, the terms and conditions upon signing up are unreasonably long, to the point of being prohibitive. If someone is having a problem with their software, they don't want to have to spend hours reading through terms and conditions before they can even get to ask a question. It is completely out of order to force people to read all those terms and conditions, and especially forcing people to re-read the whole thing any time there is an update. It is simply laziness on the part of the admin. They could carefully go through the terms and conditions and identify the key elements which have been changed and provide the user with a neat summary, thus saving thousands of people many hours of reading. When I take out a mortgage on a house, I have terms and conditions to read, and I expect there to be a lot. But when I simply want to sign up to a discussion forum, I do not expect a similar level of terms and conditions. People can go to, say, Yahoo or Google or YouTube and discuss these issues freely without having to read any terms and conditions at all. By putting up all these barriers you are just turning people away.
    9. IDENTITY CRISIS
Finally (and in conclusion) I would say that the site doesn't seem to know why it exists: whether it is aimed at helping the general public or amusing technology lovers?
I would have expected a site like this to be aimed at the general public, since it is promoted as a help resource by Adobe, and covers a very wide range of products, meaning that a very large and wide range of people should be expected to visit it.
However, the site gives the opposite impression. It has what I would call a steep "learning curve", with complex page layouts, full of unconventional controls and features, as well as the emphasis on community. This would all seem to suggest it is more of an exclusive site aimed more at techy people who want to "hang out" here and become regular users. I feel it is excluding laypeople and casual visitors who are simply seeking quick help.
To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help".
If you want a good example of a good, clean, elegant design that is easy to use, go to www.google.com you will notice that the controls are simple and easy: the eye is immediately drawn to the central part of the screen where the main controls are and there are only two buttons. Then if you want to see more advanced features you can go to the smaller controls which are tucked away in the top right corner and do not distract anyone.

Many of your points are totally legitimate.
    This one, however, is not:
…To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help"…
The design and management of the forums for more than five years have driven literally dozens of the most valuable contributors and "regulars" away from the forums—permanently.
The only conclusion a prudent, reasonable person can draw from this state of affairs is that Adobe consciously and deliberately want to kill these forums by attrition—without a the PR hit they would otherwise take if they suddenly just shut them down.

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

Hi, I upgraded my Iphone 3gs from version 4.1 to 6.0.1 but upon restarting, the sim card is no longer recognized, i cant restore with itune nothing at all!! i'm so confused and ****** off... please provide any help

Is the SIM from the carrier the device is locked to?
Has the device ever been hacked or jailbroken?
Have you tried simply removing and re-installing the SIM?  What about replacing the SIM?

  • Why would it state under the "more about this mac" that i already have10.8.3 and then in the app store say i need to "resume" do you know what i mean? is it possible i already did download mountain lion entirely once? I am confused and don't want it twice

This is cause by the way the App Store checks to see if an application is installed on your system.
Basically when an app is installed it is in the Applications folder and this is where the MAS looks for them. So it looks at your purchase history for the apps you bought and looks in the Applications folder to see if they are installed. If an app is in your purchase history but not in the Applications folder the MAS says you need to install it.
For normal apps this works fine but the OS doesn;t install into the Applications folder. So the MAS sees you have Mountain Lion in your purchase history but it's not in the Applications folder and so it says you need to download it.
Hopefully one of these days Apple wil fix this.
    regards
