[Solved] Trouble Viewing Samba Shares

I'm using KDE 4.6 on a x64 Arch system with all of the latest updates. I am trying to access Windows 7 shared media. If I navigate to the address in dolphin the shares are there and accessible. I'm using smb4k in an effort to mount the shares transparently for use with Banshee and other non KIO apps. The odd thing is is that smb4k sees the machine, but cannot list the shares. I'm using a default Samba config file and setup smbnetfs via instructions in the wiki. Fuse is listed in the modules array of rc.conf and smbnetfs is listed in DAEMONS. Output of smbtree:
dryce@myhost ~]$ smbtree
Enter dryce's password:

\\WINDOWSMACHINE1
cli_start_connection: failed to connect to WINDOWSMACHINE1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
Output of smbclient -L 192.168xxx
[dryce@myhost ~]$ smbclient -L 192.168.xxx
Enter dryce's password:

This configuration works fine in gnome, so I don't think there is a problem with the Windows 7 machine, but something incorrectly configured within KDE. NetBios is enabled despite what it says there. I'm sure I've left something out, please feel free to let me know. Any ideas here would be appreciated. Thanks

After fighting with this for awhile, I finally got it working. The smbtree error was apparently being caused by OpenDNS and their typo correction section. I disabled this entirely. The error message went away and printed network shares normally. The second error:
session request to 192.168.xxx failed (Called name not present)
session request to 192 failed (Called name not present)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)
NetBIOS over TCP disabled -- no workgroup available
still happens and I have no idea why. I was able to get the shares to appear and become accessible in smb4k by enabling kdewallet first. Then going into configure smb4k and selecting "Master Browser requires authentication to return the browse list" in Network and in Super User selecting "Use super user privileges to mount and unmount shares". The shares don't appear under samba shares in KDE's Network location so maybe that's where the above error comes in.

  • [Solved] Help Setting Samba Share In Qemu With XP Guest

    Hello all,
After getting around all the quirks of setting an XP guest inside qemu, the only (though, pretty important) thing I can't solve is setting a samba share between the Arch host and the XP guest.
I tried whatever I could think of that's relevant, with no success:
    Qemu is launched with:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -boot d -m 1024 -net user,smb={my home folder} -net nic,model=virtio -rtc base=localtime -drive file=XP.qcow2,if=virtio -spice port=5900,disable-ticketing,image-compression=off,jpeg-wan-compression=never,zlib-glz-wan-compression=never,playback-compression=off -vga qxl -global qxl-vga.vram_size=67108864 -device virtio-serial-pci -device virtserialport,chardev=spicechannel0,name=com.redhat.spice.0 -chardev spicevmc,id=spicechannel0,name=vdagent -balloon virtio
I installed samba, added a user, and started the service according to the wiki.
I allowed the samba ports in UFW (using the CIFS rule).
Whenever I try accessing the share inside my XP guest (\\10.0.2.4\qemu), I usually end up with a target not found error, or at times, a password prompt that will not accept the samba user/password.
Anything else I forgot to do?
    Thanks, Adam.
    * EDIT *
I somehow missed the section regarding the guest OS able to access the host OS normal samba shares at 10.0.2.2.
Default samba share for home folder works as expected.

    Thanks.
I tried toying with the options a bit more, with no success.
I then decided to try Spice+QXL anyway, and am very happy with it.
Aside from the lengthy compilation of the Qemu version that supports Spice from the AUR, once I got it set up, installing the guest was a breeze.
Using the Spice guest tools for windows, everything was set up very conveniently (virtio for network, hdd, qxl driver, mouse integration etc.).
Responsiveness is much better comparing to previous attempts with "vga std", "vga cirrus" and normal adapter.
Bottom line, I'm sticking with Spice+QXL, seems to work best for me.

  • [SOLVED] Samba share problems

    Hey guys,
    So I've been trying to create an unauthorized set of samba shares, I've managed to allow a guest user to connect to the drives without authentication however files that I copy from outside the shares cannot be modified by my guest. Is it possible for me to allow guests to modify files that do not belong to them? my example is below;
    cp /etc/motd /home/shares/downloads
    ls -l
    -rw-r--r-- 1 sam   users 406 Feb 16 02:29 motd
    -rw-rw---- 1 guest users   0 Feb 16 02:37 test.txt
I attempt to modify the motd and it will not let me save apologies for any sheer stupidity, I'm still fairly new to this. Below is my smb.conf
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

Hmm, seems that the linux user account and the samba account passwords need to be identical for this to work? if I define no password for the samba account sam and if it has a password on the linux box itself, it will not work :S am I missing something?
Also might be worth taking note that if a conflict exists between the password then it also renders my other account such as guest inaccessible, I've got it back to working the way it was before
EDIT: I've managed to get this working, for some reason once I needed to remove the sam account that I created within smbpasswd - once I had done this I was able to use sam as the guest account? Samba is a little bit like pissing in the dark sometimes Ahh well.

  • [PARTIALY SOLVED]Can't see SAMBA share or Printer in Linux

    Greetings all,
I have built a headless server running Arch linux as the base OS.  I am running SAMBA and CUPS and performing all maintenance of this server via SSH.
The SAMBA share I can see (read/write) on all the Windows 7 machines on the network as well as the Printer connected to the server.  But I can't see it when I open Thunar or PCManFM.  Nor can I access the printer.
It's obviously something I am doing wrong but I have Googled different parameters trying to find a solution but have come up short.
Your assistance and guidance in putting me in the right direction is most appreciated.  All my Linux machines are running Arch.
    Thanks,
    Ian

I have looked high and low.  The printer is set up via CUPS and the printer in smb.conf is set to CUPS.  All 4 windows computers in the house now have this printer set as default and can print fine.
But if I try to print in Linux, for example in Libreoffice, I get No default printer found.  Please choose a printer and try again.  When I click ok, the network printer does not show up for me to select.
I have tried updating the /etc/cups/client.conf on the client computer and it is set as:
    # see 'man client.conf'
    homeserver /var/run/cups/cups.sock
    homeserver 192.168.X.XX
From what I have read so far, this is correct.  When I go to the CUPS Web Interface it shows under Manage Printer my HP 7300 Series printer there and in idle waiting for job.  And in Windows I can print to it just fine.
As far as I can  tell SAMBA is set up correctly (I can mount the file drive in Arch with no issues) and CUPS seems to be configured correctly as well from all that I have read.
    Any insight would be great,
    Thanks,
    Ian

  • [solved] ln / cp / mv / samba share incremental backups

    Modifying a hardlink(/ed file)... argh.
Result A, old file 1 stays:
    1 && echo 2 > 2 && ln 2 3 && mv 1 3 && cat 2 3 && rm 1 2 3
    2
    1
rm: cannot remove ‘1’: No such file or directory
Result B, file 1 gets overwritten too:
    $ echo 1 > 1 && echo 2 > 2 && ln 2 3 && cp 1 3 && cat 2 3 && rm 1 2 3
    1
    1
    Why?
I guess something like: "Because cp just overwrites the file that is where the hardlink points to while mv has to delete the hardlink first and then move the pointer thingy of the existing file"?
On a samba share, when a windows client overwrites hardlinks, I get Result B: The old file stays. Which makes for a great super easy / "lightweight" automatic incremental backup drive: I just hardlink explicitly everything to a file with the name of the current date every day and the old backup hardlinks will never be overwritten when the windows client synchronizes to the "current-directory". Or something like that...
I'm confused though as to WHY that works. Should it be working this way / can I trust that it'll keep working like that? Or is the windows client doing something "wrong" (like deleting the hardlink before copying over the modified file with the same link instead of copying it to the new destination)?
Someone please throw the manual that I need to eat to become less confused at me.
    Thanks!

  • Finder lock ups due to samba shares being invalidated by changing network

I often leave my macbook online for a long time unattended, for simplicity I tend to plug it into its power lead, and also connect it up to my gigabit network. I know i've set the priority in my connections to prefer the wired connection over wireless but just to keep things simple i disable airport so i can be sure that i will be connected via gigabit.
I'll then go in and map a network drive from one of my PCs on the lan, this is mounted and available.
Sometime in the future i'll go mobile again, like i just did today. Disconnecting power and gigabit ethernet, i re-enable airport. After a short while its all good to go.. I then start using the internet connection. All is fine.
Then finally i spot that my samba drive is still mapped, i've had trouble selecting this drive to use it, but sadly also you get real trouble by just trying to eject the mount. Doing so and nothing happens.. after 10-20 seconds everything is frozen, including the animated dock, and top toolbar, and you are presented with the spinning wheel of activity.
applealtesc does NOT bring up the force close dialog, and eventually i was forced to force a shutdown.. apple power button isn't it? I had the power button held down for a long time.
Generally i find the mounting samba drives a bit of a pain in the finder but i can put up with it. Samba shares on windows are a nightmare but they rarely bring down the whole system when a connection has been broken.. i'd love it if mac OS would time out the samba share and just give up, rather than hanging in the way it does do.
Obviously i'm accessing my LAN through a different interface and IP address than i was when i set up the connection. I am not sure if you have a similar problem as described if you just disconnect from the network and have no net connection at all.. not sure what it would do with a share in this way.
Is this worth logging as an actual bug? anyone got any suggestions to fix it?

Ok, no luck yet. Maybe I can ask another question directly related to this issue. I am trying to find the cause of this and I am wondering if there is a brief dropout in the connection to the NAS. By brief, I mean really brief. The NAS is connected via a Homeplug network connection (network via the homes power points) and maybe for a very brief period interferrence on the lines dropped the AFP connection.
Is it normal that it is then impossible for AFP to reconnect, even when the NAS is clearly back on the network?
Any drop will have to be very brief as I can always stream music without issues, and no drop or slow down has caused buffering issues.
But, I don't recall getting this issue when directly connected to the iMac via a short ethernet cable for the initial Time Machine backups that take over a day.
What I don't understand though, is if the connection did briefly drop and loose the AFP link, why can AFP no longer connect back? Why do I need to sleep the iMac and then wake it again.
HTTP connections to the NAS never seem to drop, and when I can't recconnect via AFP, I can always connect via HTTP? Is this expected of the AFP protocol? Or is it an unexpected issue?

  • DFS Folder Target to Samba Share not working

    Hello folks,
I'm on Server 2012 R2. I'm using a DFS Namespace that is configured as standalone server (i.e. not a domain-based namespace). The Namespace is the IP address of the server. I have also tried this with the hostname of the server and I get the same results.
    Here's my problem:
I've created a folder target within DFS that points to a samba share on a linux-based NAS. The samba share is a 'cloud storage' share hosted by my server host, so I'm not entirely sure what specific technology it is. It does not have a public ACL - it requires
authentication and I cannot change that. I can connect to the Namespace fine from other servers. However, when I try to open the folder target, it tells me "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password". Then, if I right-click the folder, select
Properties then the DFS tab, I see that the path is Active. If I click Check Status, I get Okay, and when I exit, the folder is now navigable and I have no problems browsing the folders. Sometimes when I close Explorer, the share will still be accessible when
I reopen Explorer and browse to it, but most of the time when I close and reopen, the same error is displayed and I have to Check Status again to regain access. If I logout of the session, log back in and try again, it always gives me the error until I Check
    Status again.
The idea is to access this share from multiple instances of IIS, so obviously requiring user intervention is not going to be suitable. I have added a local user to the DFS server that matches the valid credentials on the samba share, and I've also added
them to all the servers trying to use this share. I've confirmed that all servers can browse directly to the share. I do notice that when I browse directly to the samba share after having not used it for some time (30 minutes or one hour), it takes longer
than expected to open - maybe 10 seconds. Could this lag be causing the issue? There are no errors or warnings in the logs on the DFS server. Any ideas what this could be? Have I missed something? Massive thanks for any guidance!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.

  • Samba shares no longer visible after migration to systemd

EDIT: Note the file server is CLI only.
I upgraded my file server to systemd about a week ago and have yet to get the Samba share visible from other devices within my network.  Eveything worked fine under initscripts and other than system upgrades the only thing that has changed about the system is the migration to systemd and addition of the netcfg package.  I can connect manually by typing "smb://<IP>" in a file manager address field but when trying to access the Share via browsing on two different WD media players, a Xoom tablet, typing "smb://" in the address bar of a basic file manager like Thunar or PCManFM or using browsing the Network or Samba Shares links in the Network place from Dolphin the share just doesn't show up.
The fact that I can access the Share directly, it's just not visible when browsing, makes me think samba is working properly but I'm not sure how to further diagnose the issue and I'd really like to solve the problem and learn something rather than just load up a previous image of the PC before the systemd migration.

Are your clients also using systemd?
Yes I do have a firewall, iptables, and it's the same configuration from before the migration to systemd.  Also note that I can access the shares when explicitly defining the path whether that's in a File Manager, cli or other so access isn't being blocked.  For lack of a better explanation the whole thing gives the appearance that although the Share is active it's just not broadcasting it's existence like it should be.
I have two PC's, both Arch, one with Openbox and one running KDE that I have migrated to systemd.  Both can access the Share when the path is explicitly defined but don't see it when trying to just browse for the the Share.  I have a Xoom tablet, running Android Jelly Bean, that exhibits the same behavior.  I also have two media players, one an older WD LiveTV Plus model the other a newer WD LiveTV model, neither of which can see the share and browsing is the only option for those devices.  So I've got a pretty good assortment of devices and operating systems that could see the share when browsing previously but can not see the same share by browsing since the migration to systemd on the file server.
    Thank you.

  • Best options for migrating Samba shares to DFS

My team is in the process of setting up a new domain for our organization. We want to slowly migrate users from non-AD accounts and workstations to AD (2012). One of the pieces we are having trouble coming to a consensus on is the best method(s) for migrating
the Samba shares from our RHEL server to DFS.
One idea was to join the Samba server to the domain then add the shares into DFS to allow the non-AD users to continue to use the old server and the new users to use the DFS server. As we had time (small team) we would join the individual workstations, have
the users start using their AD credentials, and move their mapped drives to the DFS share. Later, we could add a DFS server for replication and eventually drop the Samba server once everyone was migrated.
Another opinion that we should simply copy the departmental shares across to the DFS server and move whole departments rather than individual users, locking down the old Samba shares as we go.
These are pretty much theoretical at this point as I can't seem to find any documentation on how best to migrate from Samba to DFS. I would appreciate ideas.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You could map drives to old server using the DFS server credential:
    net use \\DFS server\\share  Z:  /user:domain\username password
Then run the robocopy command to migrate the shared folder from the old server to the DFS server:
    robocopy “\\source server\drive$\folder path” Z:\ /COPYALL /B /SEC /MIR /R:0 /W:0 /LOG:c:\logs\robolog.txt /NFL /NDL
For more detailed information about the robocopy command, you could refer to the artice below:
    Robocopy

  • Can't browse samba shares after samba upgrade (3.0.26a-4 - 3.0.27A-1)

    Hi all,
After today's samba update, i am unable to browse my samba shares:
    As seen in pacman.log:

    [2007-11-16 15:55] updating samba (3.0.26a-4 -> 3.0.27A-1)
Ive had this samba server running for a long time and never had any trouble. Apart from the system update i havent changed anything.
I have tried two machines to access it, a ubuntu and a windows one. The ubuntu one would mount it all right, but when you try browsing it it gives an 'Input/output error', these are the last lines found in /var/log/messages file:
    Nov 16 19:42:06 Naboo kernel: [ 855.043000] SMB connection re-established (-5)

The windows machine would actually show the files in the shared directory but after a very long wait. Browsing and reading files was taking such a long time that windows seemed like frozen so i had to restart.
I also tried rebooting the server but to no avail.
Anyone else with the same problem?

  • Leopard unable to send folders to a samba share

We are currently experiencing a problem trying to copy a pro tools project onto one of our servers via a samba share on the server. When we try to copy/move a directory finder reports that it does not have sufficiant privalages to do so.
But when we selected individual files inside the directory tree and copied them, they all went over fine and where able to create directories on the server from the client.
I then used terminal and ls -la to view the contents of the directories and discovered there were a fair few hidden temporary files. All belong to the correct user as far as samba is concerned, but some had the "@", Extended attributes flag attatched. I am able to interrogate them using xattr which shows com.apple.<this part varies> I'm unsure completely what com. files represent, as I am generally a linux user (sorry apple! but hey we're both unixy..)
Does anyone know of a fix, or if this is a common problem? or any way I can stop osx from spuriously creating these hidden files? or am I going to havto script something.. umm.. somewhere.
Oh, the server is running Fedora Linux, and the client is an Imac running OSX Leopard.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
    Stewart
I am having difficulty finding a sollution to this problem.

do you get error -36 or error -50? there are several bugs related to that in snow leopard finder. not sure which one is affecting you. try this link first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4017
next, see this post. It could be a problem with split resource forks for hidden .DS_Store files if it only affects folders
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11122044&#11122044

  • Finder hang after file delete NTFS Samba share after 10.6.7

    I have Finder problem!
Before 10.6.7, I had no issue with a Samba share on win2008 server, I have full admin rights for the files.
Now, I can move the files, change the Directory they are into another, rename them, basically I can do what ever I want with them, except deleting them.
As soon as I try to delete a file or folder, Finder hangs, And I can't stop the process, killing the network connection does nothing, trying to unmount it wont work either.
    Any clues? Suggestions?

I have tightened up to the problem to the ds_store invisible files.
If the folder that has a ds_store file in it and you trash it, it freezes up the mac. (For some reason not most files)
But after the freeze, the folder permissions get corrupted (or changed maybe not sure) then trashing doesn't work again.
But if you view the invisible ds store files and delete it you can trash the folder.

snakeroot wrote:Are you sure it is actually starting ssh and ssftp or is it just having avahi advertise them as existing?
I'm not sure if anything is started, the term "Service ssh successfully established" sounds like the ssh serrver is started to me, but it might just be strange wording. What does "advertise as existing" mean?
From the snippet you quoted, it looks like the latter. Unless you have alread started socket activation for ssh or sftp, whether via systemd *.socket or inetd, I'm not sure it would actually be started.
    I didn't enable anything manually.
I think you can rm/mv the sftp-ssh.service and ssh.service files /etc/avahi/services/ and prevent those services from being advertised.
OK thanks for the hint. Nontheless i would rather stop avahi from starting than configuring it.
    Begin rant...
I'm a bit annoyed that avahi is starting without my permission. Seems like systemd is getting a bit overzealous with starting services. Interestingly this was one of the big problems with upstart, and was supposed to be solved with systemd. I still like systemd.
