[Solved] tty1 is sluggish
When switching to tty1 from running X, the input becomes very sluggish. However all other sesssions works just fine without and noticeable lag. Any idea what happening to tty1?

Yeah, but isn't that what the slim-tty-slowness.patch is supposed to fix?
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/18313
http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/package … ness.patch
What version of slim are you running? If it's the one from the Repo then its's patched already. If you are running one from the AUR like "slim-cursor" which doesn't include this patch then that could be your issue.

[SOLVED]Arch is sluggish after fresh install :s
Zero-fill format: check!
XFS partitions for / and /home and /home/mariachi/stuff: check!
ext2 partitions for /boot and /var: check!
installation: check!
XFCE: check!
be happy: no check.
I don't understand why my computer almost freezes to death (as in "it's so slow that I though it was dead" kind of death) when I copy a file from one disk to another. I simply cannot do anything else when there's something being actively written to the disk.
This is really troublesome, as an action that used to take a few seconds, now takes minutes and won't let me use any other apps. As soon as the writing is over, everything is fast and joyful again.
The cpu is not being used 100%, neither memory is being "eaten".
Any idea as to what may be causing this? Disk problems?
Thanks fellas
SOLVED:it was a problem with my disk, which I was able to solve

I see this also with heavy disk usage and I'm using ext3 on my both of my drives.
Somewhere here in the forums there was talk about some kernel config that can help fix this. I believe that it was being looked at for the third release of the 2.6.26 kernel. I don't remember where I read it and a quick search turned up nothing. If anyone else remembers this conversation, please jump in. -
My MacBook Pro 2010 unable to link with SSD at SATA 2, 3 Gb speed
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid-2010 that I used with the standard 5400 RPM HDD for about a year. Last week I decided to replace it with an SSD, the Corsair Force GT 120 GB to be more precise. I knew that my MacBook Pro model only supports SATA I & SATA II & that the SSD is backwards compatible. I expected (and still expect) the SSD to link up at SATA II 3 Gb speed.
However, System Profiler gives the following information:
NVidia MCP89 AHCI:
Vendor: NVidia
Product: MCP89 AHCI
Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
Corsair Force GT:
Capacity: 120,03 GB (120.034.123.776 bytes)
Model: Corsair Force GT
Revision: 1.3.3
Benchmark tests show my write & read speeds are at about 100 & 110-130 MB/s. I have searched for a while on this and other forums and not been able to find a way to get negotiated link speed at 3 Gb and then to check whether this solves the rather sluggish performance.
Some extra info that might be useful:
-The 1.3.3 firmware of the SSD is the latest available. There are also no updates available via Apple Software Update.
-The SSD is the only drive in my system. After booting to the Mac OS X Lion DVD I had created, I used the disk tool to partition the new drive with the settings at GUID partition table & HFS+ Journaled. I haven't experienced any other problems.
-I have reset the SMC, PRAM & NVRAM. This didn't change anything.
-I haven't installed any Windows version using Boot Camp (yet).
-System has Boot ROM Version: MBP71.0039.B0B and SMC Version (system): 1.62f6
Thank you in advance.Guys, have any of you tried these:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Pro_EFI_Firmware_Update_1_7_
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/22/macbook-pro-update-rights-the-wrong-enables-3 gbps-sata-transfer/
Or solved the problem any other way? I'm thinking on buying a SSD.
Thanks, and cheers -

Ugh. what to do? help!
i updated to the new ios4 and now all my apps either crash or freeze. the phone is super sluggish. can i just go back to ios3 or is there a way to fix this? i just got my phone may 19 and it is brand new! i dont have to have the few changes offered in to 3g users in the update.....can anyone help??
If you look or search around the other threads, you'll see lots of proposed answers.
The basics are, make sure to fully power down the phone and reboot. That solves the major sluggishness for most people and gets it back to the sluggishness of 3.1.3.
Beyond that, a Restore to factory settings, will also usually help, as that removes, and then resyncs your music, apps, pictures, etc.
All that failing, the iOS4 release is slower than the 3.X releases. If you really need/want to downgrade, there is a way.
There was another thread with an article on how to do it on a Mac. The key is, you need to download the 3.1.3 ipsw file, then hold shift and click update in iTunes, which asks for a specific ipsw file to use.
You'll probably want to google for a step-by-step tutorial to help you out though. Or search the forums. There was one posted a couple hours ago. -
Cineform and Premiere 8.2... crashing....
Anyone else getting frequent crashes with Cineform media on the timeline? I just upgraded to Premiere 8.2 in hopes that it solved the UI sluggishness for me... which it didn't. A new feature with the update seems to be Premiere crashing almost immediately when I preview Cineform media I rendered as intermediate files for my project. I might be forced to find another intermediate format. I've had problems with Cineform in the past within Premiere, so this doesn't surprise. Are others experiencing this?
I am also having this issue. Just scrubbing the timeline with Cineform footage crashes PPro immediately. Happens repeatedly. All drivers and software is up to date.

[SOLVED] Sluggish database update times since new Arch install
Hi guys, this time I write to ask something about pacman that i find unusual.
Happens that I decided to reinstall my Arch like 2 months ago, and since then pacman takes a real longer time that it used to just to sync the databases, to be more accurate this sluggishness presents not when the progress bar is downloading the new DB, but between DB downloads (e.g. it takes about minute from the time it finishes downloading the core DB to when it starts to download the extra DB.)...
Any ideas?
Thanks for the support.

Try using rankmirrors to set up a good number of the fastest mirrors for your location, for me this changes everything!
I live in europe so I first delete every other mirror in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, then I enable all leftover mirrors and run:
rankmirrors -n10 /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist #-n10 to only output the 10 best, change this number to your likings
for several times and replace the resulting 'overall top-listed mirrors' list in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
Hope this does the trick for you too!
ps. You need python to use rankmirrors, I recommend you read the rankmirror man-page for further options
Well, it seems to me that this solved the problem. I had uncommented some lines at Czech Republic but live in Mexico, so that was lagging the pacman operations a lot. But now its fast as usual.

Split iPhoto library to solve sluggishness?
Hello, we have 23000 pictures in our iPhoto library. It seems like iPhoto is particularly "burdened" by all the photos (i.e. sluggish at times). At least that's our theory.
We're wondering, provided our theory is correct--if splitting the library into multiple libraries, and then setting iPhoto;s default library just to the most recent pictures would solve its sluggishness?
Would that help, or would anyone have other ideas how to give iPhoto a break from having to load 23000 pics every time we load it?
many thanks!
--sluggish in Dallasi split the library by creating a new one and them importing the pics I wanted to have ready access to in a streamlined library.
problem is, all my ratings didn't come across in the import. what did I do wrong? I even check the prefs file to ensure ratings and other metadata would be included in the import, but no dice.
any ideas? -
[SOLVED] auto-logout of tty1 after logout of desktop env. possible?
I don't know if I am missing something...
I have recently posted here about running X with different screen solutions: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=191255
I now added the auto-login configuration described here and that helps, except that when I logout, I am stuck at the tty1 console again as opposed to going straight back into auto-login and starting X. I know it's just a simple Ctrl+D to logout of the console, but I would prefer to:
- logout of desktop environment
- tty1 auto-logout
- tty1 auto-login
Is there a way to do this?

We know what the issue is - but how you start X determines what will happen when it is done. If you use the exec command as advised, you will be logged out of the tty as soon as X exits, and as you've set up autologin, you will be immediately logged back in. I have this set up here - it works.
But hey, if you're so sure your problem couldn't possibly be solved, I'll leave you to be unhappy.
Not in my nature to be unhappy
So let me try to give you all the details of my setup:
I have setup autologin to the console, as described in Automatic login to virtual console.
Once logged in at the console, ~/.bash_profile starts my desktop environment Enlightenment.
Here is my ~/.bash_profile:
# ~/.bash_profile
# If not running interactively, don't do anything
[[ $- != *i* ]] && return
# prompt
export PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
# Auto-login to Enlightenment
if [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]]
then
# set default GUI browser
export BROWSER=firefox
# get RESOLUTION
source ~/.RESOLUTION
export RESOLUTION=$RESOLUTION
# startx with xorg.conf file according to $RESOLUTION
if [ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]
then
echo "starting low-res setup"
startx -- -config xorg.conf-2k
else
echo "starting hi-res setup"
startx -- -config xorg.conf
fi
fi
As you can see, I have two different xorg.conf files, one (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) sets up my four-monitor xinerama display, the other (/etc/X11/xorg.conf-2k) sets up a "normal" HD resolution display. These both work as expected.
The file ~/.RESOLUTION simply contains this:
RESOLUTION=hires
~/.bash_profile sources this file and sets the environment variable RESOLUTION, which is then used by ~/.xinitrc
My ~/.xinitrc file contains the following:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Arch Linux Default
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
# start Enlightenment according to the
# environment variable RESOLUTION
if [ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]
then
exec enlightenment_start
else
exec enlightenment_start -fake-xinerama-screen 3840x2400+0+0
fi
I have created a script called resw that looks like this:
#!/usr/bin/bash
# @author: [email protected]
# @since: 2015-01-09
# @version: 0.1
# @bugs: Works but should really also logout of tty1
# Script that pops up a zenity list menu
# with a 'lowres' and 'hires' option. When
# either is selected and 'OK' is clicked, the file '~/.RESOLUTION'
# will change it's 'RESOLUTION' value to the one chosen, and
# Enlightenment exits
# Now .bash_profile and .xinitrc can use the RESOLUTION value
# to act accordingly.
RESOLUTION=`zenity \
--title="Choose Resolution" \
--width=680 --height=230 \
--list --column="Variable" --column="Description" \
hires "Switch to high resolution [3840x2400]" \
lowres "Switch to low resolution [1920x1200]"`
if [[ $RESOLUTION = 'hires' ]]
then
sed -i s/lowres/hires/ ~/.RESOLUTION
enlightenment_remote -exit
elif [[ $RESOLUTION = 'lowres' ]]
then
sed -i s/hires/lowres/ ~/.RESOLUTION
enlightenment_remote -exit
else
exit 0
fi
As you can probably make out from the comments in that file, this is what happens when I run the script:
- A window with a selection-list pops up where I can choose "hires" or "lowres"
- When I choose either of these, the script rewrites the file ~/.RESOLUTION accordingly
- The script calls Enlightenment's "exit" function, which shuts down Enlightenment
- Restarting Enlightenment now will have ~/.bash_profile and ~/.xinitrc use the value that's set in ~/.RESOLUTION to start Enlightenment with the corresponding xorg.conf or xorg.conf-2k file
Everything works as expected, but what I am trying to accomplish is, that Enlightenment will automatically restart after I use the script above.
A manual logout does that once back at the console (tty1). But I can not seem to trigger that logout from the script.
In other words, everything works as expected, but after the script runs and Enlightenment exits, I have to manually do Ctrl+D to logout, which in turn does the automatic login again.
I know it may sound a bit overkill... but it would really be nice to get this working.
In case you wonder: running a custom xrandr command or script does not work in my case. It did before, when I was running Enlightenment e17, but apparently they changed something—once Enlightenment is in xinerama mode, it stays there, no matter what xrandr sets. I have tried that before, but it didn't work and that's why I came up with the more complicated solution above which uses two different xorg.conf files and a conditional startup command for startx and enlightenment_start
I hope it all makes sense, I would really be happy to find a solution for this... -
MacBook Pro with 4GB of memory and a 2.3 GHz Intel. No other program running other than Preview.
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

[SOLVED] Automatic login to TTY1, openbox error
SOLUTION at the last post.
Hello,
I was trying to create the systemd autologin.service, to log into TTY1 right after boot.
I have been following the instructions on the wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Au … al_console
PROBLEM: after boot, the login happens a few times with an error, flashing, and then dissapears leaving with a basic underscore " _ ". I can still use TTY2.
If I go back to TT1, I see the following error multiple times, (maybe its a loop):
Last login: today, etc TTY1
Openbox-Message: Failed to open the display from the DISPLAY environment variable.
Which is weird because I don't have openbox set to autostart or anything, I think. (.xinitrc is basic as well; .dmrc has kde-plasma set.)

Any hints on what could be it? What file should I check?
Thanks in advance! Cheers!

For some reason I can't disable "autologin@tty1".
Yes, this is a vanilla arch (customised by myself).
This is what I have done:
cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected] /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]
-Edited the file: /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]
the line: ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --noclear %I 38400 linux
to be like this: ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --noclear -a ubunchu %I 38400
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl disable getty@tty1
sudo systemctl enable autologin@tty1
sudo systemctl start autologin@tty1
sudo systemctl enable multi-user.target
-now tried disabling:
sudo systemctl disable getty@tty1 (again)
sudo systemctl disable autologin@tty
sudo systemctl disable autologin@tty1
sudo systemctl disable [email protected]
sudo systemctl disable [email protected]
sudo systemctl disable [email protected]
-no output, looks like it does not disable it -
[SOLVED] Slow/sluggish touchpad buttons response (sometimes)
Hi all,
I have had this problem for some months now but have never looked into it, even if it is pretty annoying.
Sometimes (say one boot every three) the touchpad buttons of my laptop (see sig) behave strangely. Their response time is very long, I have to keep them pressed for ~half a second to make them trigger correctly.
This is very annoying when editing texts (selection a section of text with the touchpad) and using any click intensive application (ie editing a presentation with Prezi).
I use KDE and the only touchpad configuration I've ever done has been done via synaptiks.
I cannot tell after what update this started, it was too long ago unfortunately.
Since this happens only sometimes I don't even know where to start looking!
EDIT: I stress the fact that this happens with buttons, not with tapping
Last edited by OdinEidolon (2014-06-29 09:19:30)Just FYI,
this one solved itself some months ago after some kind of update. -
[SOLVED] Can't log into tty1
This started some time while I was setting up X: When I try to log into tty1 (tty2 to tty6 works), it gives some error message and logs out immediately. Since it clears the screen after logging out, I can't make out any more of the error message than "/etc/X11". How do I figure out what's happening, or if someone knows what's wrong, how do I fix it?

[solved] xorg on tty1
Hello,
I have two rather newly installed Archlinux systems (one some months ago, the second a few days ago) and on both xorg runs in tty1 instead of tty7.
Is that normal behavior? (It seems strange to me.) Where and how can I configure on which console X is starting up?
Also, there are no real error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Just some warnings about falling back to old probing methods and not being able to load modules which aren't installed like fbdev and nvidia (on the machine with Nvidia chipset). Btw. do I need the modesetting module??
Also, both are old machines: Dell Latitude C840 (Nvidia 440Go) and Dell Dimension 2400 (Intel 845GV).
The Dell Dimension currently also has some problems that X only shows a blank screen with just a mouse pointer when starting lxdm. But still no error messages neither in Xorg.0.log nor in lxdm.log. A few days ago it worked well after setting rendering method to UXA for the Intel driver as stated in the wiki.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

About the tty, yes that is normal, and is due to switching to Systemd, only starts one getty by default.
Maybe this helps https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd_FAQ
With the Intel driver on the old machine SNA runs worse (just 256 colors or something) than UXA, that's why I switched. I wouldn't have changed the default without a reason.
Ok, for fixing the current problem with the blank screen, I switched back to default (SNA I guess) and got the same result as earlier (works but 256 colors or something like that). But then as I switched back to UXA it worked again. How strange is that? No change in configuration but different behavior. Could it be some kind of problem with intial hardware state?? It really seems so. After cold restart same problem again, and after switching to SNA and back to UXA it works again. Should I post a bug report? But where?
Ah ok, I didn't got the news that X in Arch now runs by default in tty1 (or as I read the calling tty - Why has systemd a tty, isn't it a daemon??). Also, I found no mention of this fact in the wiki, but maybe it's there. I obviously missed that systemd FAQ although I read a lot about systemd before and after I switched my system to it.
I still mainly use a very old Archlinux Installation (I installed around 2005-2007), of course properly updated but some differences remain as I see, e.g. Xorg runs on tty7 as I am used to.

Actually it is not because there is only one tty started. If that were the case it would start on tty2, as the previous behavior was to start X on the first free tty.
Now X is (by default) not started on the first free tty, but instead the calling tty is used. If you run startx in tty2, X will run in tty2. This is set in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc.
You can easily override this by adjusting that file, or (preferrably) by specifying a vt number when you start x, eg `xinit -- vt7`.
Thanks for the information!
Letting X start on the calling tty seems a bit too random for my taste.
$ cat /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
#!/bin/sh
if [ -z "$XDG_VTNR" ]; then
exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@"
else
exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@" vt$XDG_VTNR
fi
Well, where is XDG_VTNR set?? Can't find it in /etc:
$ grep -r "XDG_VTNR" /etc/
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc:if [ -z "$XDG_VTNR" ]; then
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@" vt$XDG_VTNR

[SOLVED] Syslog output flooding tty1
I recently installed a new guest OS on Virtualbox and added a USB automount udev rule. After restarting, tty1 was flooded with syslog, even as I tried to log in. There don't seem to be any stray entries in syslog-ng.conf, and I removed the udev rule as soon as I noticed the problem. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

No. Read again. You need to add "quiet" without the quotes obviously to your kernel line.
