[SOLVED]vim file specific settings (ie. modelines)

I'm referring to a line in a file s/a
# vim: ft=sh ts=4 et sw=4:
I have that line at the bottom of a .bashrc file. When I open it with vim as a regular user, the settings are applied. When I open it with vim as root (logged in as root; no sudo involved) on the same machine, the settings are ignored. Any ideas as to why this is, or how to fix it?
Both reguser and root have identical .vimrc and .vim folders. If I remove both users' .vimrc, reguser still applies the settings and root still ignores them. I also tried starting vim with full path to rule out any user env. weirdness, no change.

Thanks for all the input and for pointing out it's called a modeline. Not knowing what it's called made it difficult to research.
In the case I cited, I added the modeline just as an experiment. I copied it verbatim from /usr/lib/network/network because I didn't understand it enough to be sure I could just remove ft=sh .
x33a wrote:Vim is reasonably good at recognizing file types, but not always. ...
I remove all comments from a lot of config files. Thus I've also found that vim considers the following (my linux.preset) to have no ft:
ALL_config="/etc/mkinitcpio.conf"
ALL_kver="/boot/vmlinuz-linux"
PRESETS=('default')
default_image="/boot/caddywhompus.img"
But if I add a new line to the top with just a '#', vim suddenly recognizes it as ft=conf.
Trilby wrote:File specific modelines are quite handy at times, but there certainly shouldn't be a need to specify "ft=sh" in a modeline of bashrc, it is already recognized as such.
Completely unrelated to my experiment with the modeline, but when I back up that .bashrc as root-bashrc it's recognized as ft=conf .

  • [Solved]Vim: file specific settings

I seem to remember seeing some sort of text file (a bash script maybe) that had what looked like vim commands in a section at the top.  Am I delusional, or did I really see what I thought I saw?  I did some googling but I have no idea how to describe my query to Mr. Google.  I got a bunch of results about vimrc and auto-creating headers for source files.

    You're welcome (velbekomme).

  • [Solved] Vim ignoring modelines

This line is at the end of a load of my bash scripts, but none of the settings are getting applied (for the several files I've tried).
It's the last line in my file.
    # vim:set ts=4 sw=4 ft=sh et:
I've got no modeline setting in my vimrc, so no idea why it's being ignored unless there's one. I've read though the vim help and have done a quick internet search, but can't find anything obvious.
    Any ideas?

I think the expandoption shouldn't have a colon. What happens if you try:

That doesn't change behaviour, and  I think it goes against what the help says.
However, it looks like the issue is elsewhere, as looking at the settings, the modeline isn't getting ignored, it's the behaviour isn't as I expect from those settings. This could be user error, but whatever it is, it isn't modelines getting ignored. So I'll mark this as solved and look into the behaviour issue.

  • [Solved][VIM] E484: Can't open file syntax.vim

    Hi all,
I've installed Archlinux few days ago on my netbook and yesterday i decided to configure Vim using plugins.
During plugins configuration, i messed up and i decided to revome all Vim files in my ~ folder in order to restart configuration.
However, since I've executed the `rm -R .vim .vimrc .viminfo` command, I can't re-activate Vim's syntax coloration using `syntax on` into my .vimrc file nor into Vim directly.
Here is the error message when I start Vim :
    Error detected while processing /home/romain/.vimrc:
    line 1:
    E484: Can't open file /home/romain/.vim/syntax/syntax.vim
Press ENTER or type command to continue
I've found this topic on BBS which seems to be the same problem as me but reinstalling vim or vi doesn't solve this problem.
I've tried to copy this syntax.vim file from /usr/share/vim/vim73/syntax/syntax.vim but it doesn't solve the problem and I want a clean solution without hacking my ~ folder ; moreover, this bug also appears being root while I haven't configured vim with the root account so it may be a problem into Vim's installation folders or something.
Thanks for your help and sorry I my english contains mistakes,

  • [SOLVED] VIM: different syntax highlighting for new vs existing file

I've had this minor nagging issue for a while that I've been trying to figure out, but I just don't know where to look.
It is most obvious with LaTeX files (*.tex).  When I create a new file with "vim file.tex" it is recognized as a latex file and I get syntax highlighting, but it seems odd, or off.  When I close then reopen the same file, it gets "propper" syntax highlighting.
I gather that this must be because of the two different mechanisms for matching the syntax type: filename versus content.  When the file is new, vim only uses the extension.  Once there is a latex comand (e.g., "\documentclass{article}") it recognizes it as something else and the highlighting style is different.
It turns out just by actually elaborating exactly what the problem was, I was able to find the solution.  I looked for how vim recognizes the files, and found two relevant lines in /usr/share/vim/vim73/filetype.vim on lines 2093 and 2094.  Apparently the .tex filetype is not the same as .latex and others.  I changed it so it was, and I got the desired behavior.
I thought about just not posting this - but it may be useful for others.

You're right about it being overridden.  This change should be able to be placed in ~/.vimrc though.
Well  that was foolish - I should have read the comments right below in that file.  It says exactly how to set it in vimrc.  I've now added the following to my ~/.vimrc and this is completely solved without modifying the /usr/... file.
    let g:tex_flavor = "tex"

  • Problems with file block settings

We manage file block settings via group policy.  I have run into problems with the file block settings not working as advertised.
I've run into a couple of issues:
First, in Excel 2010 I would like to open Web Page and XML files in protected view rather than blocking entirely.  Our "Set Default File Block Behavior" in the GPO is set to "Blocked Files are not opened."  According to the
documentation, the settings for individual file types should be able to override this behavior but this is not the case in my testing.  If I set "Web pages and Excel 2003 XML spreadsheets" to "Allow editing and Open in Protected View"
the files are still blocked and the Trust Center list the file as Do not open, not the GPO setting of open in protected view.  I have verified via GPresults that the GPO applied successfully, rebooted the PC, etc.  The "Set Default File Block
Behavior" is NOT overridden by individual file type settings.
According to the "plan file block settings" technet article:
The “Set default file block behavior” setting specifies how blocked files open (for example: does not open, opens in protected view, or opens in protected view but can be edited). If you enable this setting, the default file block behavior you specify applies
to any file format that users block in the Trust Center UI. It also applies to a specific file format only if you both enable its file format setting (for more information about individual file format settings, see the tables in this article) and select the
Open/Save blocked, use open policy option. Otherwise, if you configure an individual file format setting, it overrides the
Set default file block behavior setting configuration for that file type.
Second, even if I do change the set default file block behavior to open in protected view, I still cannot open XML spreadsheets.  The trust center says that the file format is set to open in protected view but when I attempt to open a file it behaves
as if the setting was still set to block entirely.
The only thing that works is setting it to "do not block" which is not where I'd like to go - I would for security reasons like these types of files to open in protected view but there doesn't seem to be any way to do this contrary to the Technet
    documentation.

    Hi,
I had opened a case at Microsoft in 2012 about the «Open/Save Block, use open policy» parameter about HTM/HMTL files... Here is the answer I got from the support.
    Hope it will help
Thank you for contacting Microsoft regarding your recent Office 2010 Hotfix request (SR 112022071246968) in reference to File Block settings on web pages. We have conducted a thorough investigation into this matter
and while we recognize the impact the issue is having on your business, we cannot accept this Hotfix request because it is acting as designed.<u5:p></u5:p>
Office will block any files that are explicitly set in the File Block UI by an Administrator when there is no built in validator.  The Office File Validation scans and validates certain kinds of files and will
only display those applicable files in Protected View.  We could provide a safe experience in Protected View for HTM, but it wouldn't be a useful experience. Linked content of the web page is not available (images, stylesheets, javascript, etc), so the
user would effectively see plain text. This is not the experience we want in Protected View, and it would encourage users to leave Protected View, putting their machine at risk. So HTM/HTML files are blocked.<u5:p></u5:p>

  • "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings." Why?

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop
    running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a
few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important
those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where
the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders. What does this mean?

Hi Vincent, like I said I tried all of that already and it failed. Thanks a lot for trying to help though. Imperfect1, so sorry I took so long to reply. No that's not the case. I was trying to restore from x86 to x86.
Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of
    the risks. Shameful!
Anyway, I managed to recover my files with this life saver of a program here>
    http://www.visser.com.au/blog/migrecover-for-microsofts-windows-easy-transfer/
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer.
I can't express how grateful I am to the developer and the host for the download. You guys are the most awesomest people ever. Cheers.
Here's how you modify the syntax in commmand prompt if you used a password to protect the mig file in WET>
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/68910c1a-3c4b-47af-bb22-0e7ec6f2054f/
Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.
Good luck to anyone with the same issue who stumbles upon this post. I hope it helps you as it did me.

  • Apple TV: what are the specific settings I should adjust to?

    Hi, there
I really need your help now. I use a DVD ripper to rip DVD to MP4 for Apple TV. I am trying to achieve quality that is close to a movie (m4v) from iTunes. What are the best settings to get this type of quality? I am not concerned with output file size, and I just want to get the very best quality I can. If so, what are the specific settings I should adjust to? The program I am using allows me to adjust video and audio parameters as below:
    Video parameters:
    Codec: h.264
    Resolution: 1280*720
Bit rate: ??? (it is said Up to 5 Mbps, but what is the specific bit rate?)
    Frame rate: 24 fps
    Audio parameters:
    Codec: aac
    Sample rate: ???
Bit rate: ??? it is said 16 to 320 Kbps, but what’s the specific figure?
Audio channel: mono, stereo and 5.1 channel, which one should I choose?
Following are the tech specifications I copied from Apple’s official website:
    Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    Audio formats supported
AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through
And I have selected some parameters according to this, please see the above contents, but there is no info about specific video/audio bit rate, audio sample rate, and audio channel. I just wanna know if I want to watch the movie on my 1920×1080 TV, what are the specific settings I should adjust to?
Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, then how about playback Apple TV uncompatible video files? I have some other video files(such as avi, mkv,not DVD), and I also have a video converter, i know i can convert them to m4v, mp4, or mov that supported by ATV,but the thing is that i still don't know the best specific settings for conversion. Any suggestion? Many thanks for your kind reply.

  • Image XObject using /F file specification

We are having a problem where instead of the stream data being on the Image XObject itself, we want to use a stream that is an attached file (we are manually writing the pdf file at this point using internal tools).  Inevitably, it keeps trying to get that file from the disk and failing.
This same file specification we are using as the /F property on the XObject dictionary is the same one in the as we have as an entry in the EmbeddedFiles name tree, and the file does appear appropriately in the attachments list.  The file spec includes all the correct /F filename and /EF<</F reference>> to the actual data stream.
The XObject dictionary still has a zero byte stream associated with it, and the /Length property set to 0.  And we're using raw RGB values, so no filter (/Filter or /FFilter) needs to be specified.
The error we keep getting is "This file cannot be found" (fileErrFNF).  If we extract the file, then we get a different error of "You do not have access to this file" (fileErrPerm), unless supposedly, you are running Acrobat Pro, in which case it works as you would expect, but that doesn't solve the problem of us wanting to have it embedded as a file and be read internally, not from disk.
So the file specification should be correct, since we can see the embedded file in the attachments and extract it correctly.  And the XObject dictionary should be set up correctly, since when the file is extracted, we can get it to render if running Pro.  It's just that for some reason, we can't get the XObject to look for the EmbeddedFile instead of an external file.
We are using Acrobat Reader 9 for viewing and building this against the "PDF Reference, version 1.7" specifications.  This also fails when using AR8 as well.
Options that we have tried varying are not including the EmbeddedFiles name tree entry (thus making it invisible), including or excluding the UF or DOS/Mac/Unix values on the file specification dictionary and /EF dictionary.  We've tried removing the base /F value entirely, and only had the /EF dictionary.  What else can we try to get this to work?

  • [self-SOLVED]vim + lilypond syntax highlighting

I'm trying to get vim to use syntax highlighting in lilypond files. Apparently lilypond comes with the necessary files, but I have not been able to make vim find them (?). I am not very experienced with vi(m), so there might be something wrong with my setup.
I have, of course, both vim and lilypond installed. The files for lilypond syntax highlighting are in subdirectories of /usr/share/lilypond/2.12.3/vim/. Vim syntax highlighting works for other files, such as C++, HTML, etc., so no problem there. My ~/.vimrc file contains
    set runtimepath+=/usr/share/lilypond/2.12.3/vim/
as per instruction given in http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.12/Documenta … m/Vim-mode (and the path is correctly modified). But when I open a lilypond file (with the correct .ly suffix) all I get is black and white. What's the problem?
[EDIT: Oh heck, nevermind! Apparently I was getting too tired to read instructions properly. Was missing the ~/.vim/filetype.vim file described in the above link.]

  • Problem restoring files and settings after a recovery

I did a system recovery using recovery disks purchased from HP. My files and settings were backed up during the recovery program on an external drive.
There were no instructions included on restoring files and settings after the system recovery. I called HP and a support tech told me to run the backup program on the external drive from the admin profile which I did. However, the program put my old files on my C drive at the following location C:\System Recovery Files\C\Users\Bill.
How do I use these files under my current user profile at C:\Users\Bill?
I suppose I could move my data files, folder by folder, but is there an easier and better way?

b The two characters before the path in UF parameter are thorn and ydieresis. I tried to delete C in the path (no drive). The same in PDF 1.4 (without UF parameter) on windows or Mac. I tried with and without /Mac in the text string as the table 3.40 shows. Idem for HD.
Sure, I will send the two PDF files for someone if necessary.
    Thanks for help.

Thank you for the very interesting article written by Leonard Rosenthol.
It is a good and clear answer for this problem.
    But it is pity.
I use to Reader on PC and full Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 on Mac.
    Thanks

  • FDF file missing file specification entry

Using Acrobat 7 we have created a PDF form that is based on a pdf file which is located on a server. All team members have access to this pdf file. After filling out the form the actual data transfer works via sending just fdf data. The fdf file always contained the actual pdf file specification (path and file name)with preceding by /F key.
All this worked perfectly until the first team members upgraded to Adobe Reader version 9. Filling out the form with Adobe reader 9 leads to fdf files which have no file specification information any more. We have updgraded Adobe Acrobat 7 to Acrobat 9 as well because we thought there is just a problem in creating the actual form. However, Acrobat 9 forms behave the same.
Does anybody know, why fdf files generated by filling out forms with Adobe Reader 9 or Acrobat 9 do not include the actual pdf file information anymore?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Klaus

I have the same problem, does anyone have any idea what is wrong?
I have produced a form in version 7 and when anyone filled in the form and sent the fdf to may mailbox, i opened the fdf and it filled in the for blank form.  Now when I try to open the fdf it comes up with a fault "Application not found"  This has only started today after the system was upgraded to version 9.
