Some minor issues on Toshiba T130-10g

Hello.
I experimentally try to use Arch on my Toshiba T130-10g. While I have already successfully configured wireless, synaptics, cpufreq, laptop-mode there are still some minor issues I want to solve:
1) How do I turn off wifi completely in order to save a little bit of power? Sometimes I don't need wifi so I would like to turn it off. I tried this command
iwconfig wlan0 txpower off
but it threw an error: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I tried to google a lot for the solution, but I didn't fins anything which would resolve the issue.
2) How do I make that in cpufreq applet in Gnome I would change profiles (e.g. from powersave to ondemand) without having change it as a root but as an ordinary user?
3) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30 as a root but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...) I'm looking for a more comfortable solution that manually changing the brightness.
4) How do I turnoff bluetooth automatically after start?
5) Back in KDE 3.5 times, the network manager could easily track the statistics about downloaded volumes and categorize it in days, weeks and months I take. Is there something easy now like e.g. an applet which could do that in modern Gnome or KDE 4.X environment?
6) Is XFS as FS best for my multimedia partition? I have there MP3s, videos, ISO files and some backuped Documents. Would change to ext4 partition would have any visible effects (like loading my MP3 playlists in Juk faster?)
7) Since not all my FN keys work, I'd like to associate for example hibernate function with some key combination. How?
Thank you. Please feel free to respond to any of these questions.

1) don't you have a little wireless hardware switch on the front side of the laptop case to turn off wireless? If not, that ifconfig command only works for certain chipsets that support it. Did you try running the command as root?
3) did you try "xbacklight"? Works for me on my Toshiba L300
4) not sure but probably "/etc/rc.d/bluetooth stop" as root. Or put that command in /etc/rc.local

  • Some minor issues we are facing in converting the 6i application to 10g ,

    Regarding 10g froms i need support in resolving following issues:-
    1. Direct print to default printer
    In some of our applications user do not want to see the print preview and prefer direct print in 6i we were doing this by defining Desitination in report paramenters
    2. Open each form in new window
    We open each new form using OPEN_FORM() builtin, but all forms open in same MDI window, how using open form we can open the forms in new window
    3. Maintaining source code in windows and linux
    Initaially our developers test the forms under windows 10g AS environment but when the same form in uploaded on Linux machine they need to make some changes like " replacing all \ with /, converting all paths to lower case etc
    how we can write the same code for linux and windows
    These are some minor issues we are facing in converting the 6i application to 10g environment ...

    1) We don't do direct printing. We print everything to PDF files in a user's network mapped drive. They print or preview as required.
    2) We overcame this problem by using Java WebStart
    [http://groundside.com/blog/JanCarlin.php?title=forms_and_java_web_start&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1]
    It frees Forms from being browser based and looks more like a 'real' application.
    3) We use FormsAPI Master [Link to ORCL-Toolbox|http://www.orcl-toolbox.com/] to automatically convert from Windows to Unix. Our script converts uppercase to lowercase for icons, menus, library attachments, etc. We only do this once - unless new libraries have been attached in the wrong case. For things like '\' to '/' , Windows is quite happy to accept '/' as a delimiter. "cd C:\temp" is the same as "cd c:/temp". However, there are obvious differences between Windows and Unix. If there is any interaction between the Form and the operating system, then we do all our testing in the Unix environment - leaving Windows as a "does the screen layout look OK" environment.

    Lindsay,
    Your iBookG4 is still a pretty awesome Mac. Like already said, it has the power to run Leopard, but it depends if you have an internal DVD drive.
    Then I suppose you have to add up the cost of the OS, perhaps another 512MB RAM, iLife 08 and replacements for any favourite apps that you currently use (Leopard breaks a lot of stuff, but Intel breaks even more). Compare it to the cost of a new MacBook, which wil have all of that included and be 3-4x faster too.
    It also depends on what you want to achieve with your iBook. My PMG4 still cuts it today, I still use it in preference to my new Mac Pro, It's about the same age as your iBook, and I'll only stop using it when it becomes "painfully" slow. My 1 year old son currently uses the Mac Pro (parts for a Mac Pro are easier to replace than those for a PMG4).
    I think your choice is simple, if you can a cheap copy of Tiger, use that, it'll get your iPod Touch up and running. It came in DVD and 4 CD version (by request).
    Leopard will work for you too but a lot of the best eye-candy requires quite a meaty graphics card and you may need a RAM upgrade and replacement software - OS9 Classic is not supported in Leopard.

  • Some minor issues with Windows 7

    I have a Thinkpad SL400 and the 64bit version of Windows 7.  For the mostpart, everything works pretty smoothly but I do have a few issues.  My volume buttons are unresponsive, and the battery bar for the power manager says that I do not have a battery installed.  Also I cannot use my fingerprint scanner to log-in.  Any Ideas that could help resolve any of these issues would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    till now I was not informed about the direct downgrade to Vista. However, you can call the support and describe the situaiton and they will surelly direct you to the vista downgrade center, which (I assume) will offer you this option.
    Unfortunately I cannot tell, if this will be charged.
    A neutral update, but might help you out.
    Cheers

  • Minor Issues

    Love my Passport - what a workhorse (and it's great to be running on battery during midnight meetings while all of my co-workers have to check iPhones plugged in across the room).
    I've got some minor issues though, none of which individually affects my ability to use the device, but which are collectively annoying. Wondering if anyone has the same issues or whether I'm doing something wrong:
    - The "Smart Tags" window pops up quite often without prompting;
    - There is no longer any way to dial into a conference call directly by opening an appointment to which a bridge has been assigned (BB 10.2 would open the meeting reminder with a button that said "Join Call Now");
    - Docs to Go cannot handle any of my word documents over 300 pages, it unexpectedly quits the app when I attempt to scroll past ~pg 100;
    - Docs to Go does not understand/cannot process hyperlinks within a word document (e.g. within a table of contents) - clicking on one opens a Browser window or doesn't do anything at all;
    - There is a delay on the shift key so capitalization is often quite wonky;
    - The lock screen is often unresponsive to touch which requires pressing the on/off button twice;
    - Sometimes screen rotation does not work (Adobe Reader in particular is bad about this).
    Thanks!

  • Serveral Minor issues

    Just bought a new MacBook Pro with i7 2.8 GHZ 17". Has 8GB memory.
    Run across some minor issues.
    First Does the Disk Utility have an issue with reporting problems that aint' problems. I run repair permissions after installing any program.
    In OSX.4.11 on my old PowerBook 17" if anything was reported as needing repaired, and you ran Disk Utility repair it did.
    On this machine there are about 30 or 40 items all related to Java 1.6 that are not repaired. in fact one issue say something has been altered and will not be repaired.
    On OSX.3.5 and below Disk Utility would report non existent issues as issues.
    The second matter: I have never had since I used OSX (X.2.8) I've never had had an issue of dock icon switching to ? instead. If I go to application folder and click on application even if open the dock icon returns.
    First thing I did was run Software update as soon as I unboxed it and turned on spent about 4 hours downloading a ton of update including OSX.6.6. Then restarted in safe Mode then repair permission . Then restarted normally. Otherwise the machine is working beautifully.
    Anyone have any Ideas

    Hi Phillip,
    The permissions are a well known issue. See Permissions messages you can safely ignore Also all the Java messages can be ignored. Also, RP is a one time event. Running RP again will change nothing.
    An orphaned alias is pretty common. If you dag it off the Dock and "poof" it, then drag the Application from your /Application folder to the Dock does the icon stick, or change back to a "?"

  • X201: display randomly changes brightness + some other minor issues

    Hi there!
    Just registered to get some info about those issues i have with my x201 thinkpad.
    MAJOR ISSUES:
    Sometimes the display lowers its brightness level to ~50% (you can see the "steps" just like when you press fn+end), just to become immidiatly after that EXTREMLY bright, you barely can't read written text anymore. After this state, it slowly recovers back to normal (usually full brightness, level 15 i think). Takes about a minute to fully recover.
    I am not able to reproduce this issue, though it seems that it happens frequently when watching flash videos in fullscreen mode, but it isn't limitet to that at all, if anything. It happens every now and then "when the notebook feels like it".
    I would call it a major issue, because it really annoys me every time(hey cool, my new notebook's display gonna crash any minute!).
    Pressing fn+f8 seemingly doesnt work at all. In the official lenovo x201 manual this button sequence, like it is imprinted on my keyboard, isn't even descriped. i guess, this combination should stop the fan. I am really eager to get info on that!
    This step goes along with the former one and rather is a question: is it possible to prevent the fan from even starting? when i programm or write papers, i don't need any cpu usage or anything, though still the fan keeps running.
    MINOR ISSUES:
    *WLAN LED went off and so did my WLAN card. It just went off and needed a restart. Only happened once.
    *Notebook went into standby and wasn't recoverable from it - no button would wake it up. Happened a couple of times after i got the notebook early april.
    *High pitched noise originating from the fan/cpu, though it is not the fan! Sounds like an A/V adapter, so i guess its the capacitors or something and not fixable. At least about that issue i found something on this board.
    *Sometimes the fan goes to full power just to go back to normal. for no reason! analogies to the display's brightness change are freely interpretable
    Excuse my english, i don't think everything is proper there!
    i just wanted a professional notebook  ... atm this isn't the case.
    I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.
    I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.
    I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

    The change in brightness is controlled by an inactivity (idle) timer. It dims the screen, preserving battey and extending the LCD life after X minutes of inactivity. To change (or turn off) this behavior, open Power Manager, swich to Advanced view, and under each power scheme, choose the "Idle Timers" section and edit "dim display" and "dimmed display brightness." If you don't like the feature, maybe just make "turn off display" a shorter time and "
    dim display" to zero (never) so it jut turns off the monitor instead of dimming.
    The other reply is right - having a touchpad was an option on the x201. For those who have both touchpad an trackpoint, FN-F8 toggles them on and off. They just didn't make a whole seperate keyboard with hat blue icon blacked out But you're right, it looks like a fan. I think arrows eminating from a dot would better represent the trackpoint.
    And right - don't stop your fan from running! Unless it's going wacky like toggling off/high-speed every 2 seconds, it's just doing its job of keeping your CPU and other components cool so they don't die. There is a third-party fan controller here that ay give you more control, but it's not officially tested on the x201 yet.
    Save for your other minor observations, this is most definitely a professional notebook. You need look no further than the hinges (no to mention the built-in keyboard light) for proof.
    Enjoy

  • An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit

    Hi,
    I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
    Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway,  I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

    Hi,
    Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
    Here's how I got rid of it.
    Addressing all the facts one by one,
    1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
    by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
    the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
    *$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
    2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
    Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
    password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
    to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
    password.
    Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
    replying this thread.
    Cheers,
    Prabath

  • Issues with Toshiba Satellites and Western Digital WDC HDDs

    As much as I want to thank Jerry Lippey for helping me several times with issues regarding my boyfriend's A665-S6095 laptop, I am DONE with Toshiba.
    For the FOURTH or FIFTH time now (it's so bad I've lost count) this satellite has crashed while using a WDC Scorpio Black HDD. I have gone through FOUR HHDs in the last year and a half. I am not joking. NO ONE has time to diagnose and solve this many computer issues in such a short amount of time unless they are a paid techinician.
    The last time the HDD failed I tried to get WDC to send me the non-AFT drive that I had bought, but they told me that the BEKT version of the BPKT I bought was "not in stock". For almost a month. And yet it came back in stock on Amazon and one or two other stores online. So when I called back to say WHAT THE HELL, instead of asking me what I wanted them to do, they just decided to send me a larger drive with AFT, as if that would soothe my aggravation.
    But honestly, I don't see how this can all be WDC's fault. I mean, if you compare the number of forum posts referencing satellite versus non-satellite models, there is no way that number is proportionally equal to the number of satellite versus non-satellite models sold. I wish I had known how terrible Toshiba is before he bought the laptop, or my mother bought my brother a different satellite model. I'd have told each to shoot themselves in the foot instead.
    My boyfriend was trying to copy pictures from his Galaxy Note II onto his laptop, but when he plugged the phone in by a usb/micro usb cord and opened windows explorer, the computer froze.
    I shut it down manually, and since then it has not been able to boot at all. BIOS recognizes the drive make and model, but nothing will load; the screen goes black after the Toshiba welcome screen and nothing happens. I tried booting from both a win7 recovery disc and the 1st Toshiba recovery disc I made with the laptop; the former won't load at all and the latter goes through the "windows is loading files" progress bar, then the "microsoft windows" progress bar, brings up the cursor and stops doing anything. I can move the mouse, but the light on the HDD indicator illuminates for about 5 seconds then shuts off for less than a second, over and over. For a fraction of a second I can see an error code reading something like "No Emulation Type 00" before the recovery cd loads. I don't know what that means exactly.
    If I hadn't had previous issues with Toshiba TVAP software having compatibility issues with Windows, or if the laptop would freeze part way through installing windows updates I wouldn't have trouble blaming only WDC. But clearly Toshiba has major issues (at least) with Satellites, and except for the one person on this forum who knows what he is talking about - and let's be serious, we can't blame him for not being able to answer EVERYTHING posted on here - their tech support $^(($ B@!!$. Just like their products.
    The fact that the only answer I've found is to only replace Toshiba HDDs with OEM HDDs is complete bull.
    Sure, it is possible that the way the laptop is used causes some of the issues I've had, but FOUR HDDs? Really? What else in a laptop can go bad that could possibly help to kill off the drive? What else could possibly contribute to the agony I have to go through to keep this laptop running?
    Time to go back to work, now that I've spent over an hour trouble-shooting and writing this rant.

    Hi I'm fairly new to the forum. I'm sure Jerry will have a reply for you. 4 failed HD's is unreal. I 'm sure you know why HD's fail. I know you are very aggravated, but I would just like to ask a couple of questions. How are you testing these failed HD's. Seatools has two great free programs seatools for windows and seatools dos. Also I'm very curious about your Anti-Virus program. Viruses are really getting tough, and can wipe out your HD in seconds. If your OS gets corrupted, windows will no longer boot. I'm going to post some things that I'm sure you already know. I also would like to know how your boy friend uses his lap top. I live in a retirement village and I fix computers for free. I have see some really bad stuff. I have had to restore a couple back to factory because they were so badly infected. Power surges can really do a number on a HD. I'm going to post the link to a bootable seatools dos. It will be a ISP file and you will need to burn it to a cd. Test your drive and see what happens. I'm sure Jerry will have a comment for you. He's pretty smart.

    Why do hard disks fail?
    Because hard disks are mechanical devices, they are subject to wearing out, even if you treat them better than your own children. Around 60% of hard drive failures occur through predictable mechanical failure, with the remaining 40% of failures occurring through misuse. Hard disk failure might occur if any of the following happens:
    Your computer is bumped or jostled while it is running;
    The electric motor which allows the platter to spin fails due to bad bearings or other components;
    The filter on your air intake gets too clogged or the filter isn't working properly;
    Extreme heat while running causes the electronic circuit board to fail;
    There is a sudden power failure while the disk is writing.
    Types of hard drive failure
    There are two main types of hard drive failure - physical and logical.
    Physical failures are often due to a failure of the electric motor or the drive itself - the moving parts. They can also happen because of a major head crash (caused by your computer being dropped or jostled while it's running).
    Logical failures come from corruption in the file system. If you've accidentally deleted an important registry entry or formatted the drive improperly, or if you have a nasty virus, hard drive problems will occur. The BIOS will recognize the drive, but it won't boot.
    I Love my Satellite L775D-S7222 Laptop. Some days you're the windshield, Some days you're the bug. The Computer world is crazy. If you have answers to computer problems, pass them forward.

  • Several Minor Issues

    Here are several issues that I have noted since my install last week:
    *ACTIVITY MONITOR: Wouldn't load, kept indicating that it had "quit unexpectedly" and wouldn't relaunch, reset or ignore.
    *SPACES: I'm using six spaces. I had a lot of trouble getting Leapard to actually load all six. It indicated that they were loaded but with the apps open, they didn't appear in Spaces.
    *FILE SIZE IN COVERFLOW: I have learned to stay away from large files, at least Office for Mac files. In trying to show a 5 meg Word doc, for example, the little spinner just keeps on spinnin'.
    *MACBOOK: I loaded it on my wife's laptop. A firmware update followed the installation. After that things went downhill. It seemed that nothing would work right. Anyhow, I did a reinstall of Leopard and now all is well.
    These are minor issues and I am enjoying this OS.
    jor

    Yea, that's how I got it fixed. I'm just posting this to share some of the potential problems. I haven't experienced the problem with Activity Monitor since that time.

  • Minor issues with CreditRating tutorial

    Just in case someone else encounters these problems with the CreditRating tutorial in the Quick Start for BPEL:
    The Eclipse wizard doesn't seem to be able to add the home="${orabpelHome}" attribute to the bpelc task in the build.xml. In my case it's C:/Apps/OraBPELPM_1/integration/orabpel.
    I had to manually change the WSDL in the orabpel\domains\default\tmp\.bpel_CACreditFlow_1.0.jar\ directory. There must be some way to get the deploy tool to set $SERVER-URL$=http://yourserver:9700, but I don't see the way. This needed to be set in the schemaLocation attribute for the ws-addressing.xsd file.
    The generated build.xml refers to a "BPEL Programming" guide... but I haven't found it. That's annoying.
    There are a couple of other minor issues with the tutorial, but this got it working for me.
    Chris

    Hi Christopher,
    Thanks for the Post.
    Just a few Questions on the version on which you faced this issue.
    1. The Version of the BPEL Server.(Is it 10.1.2 or 2.1.2)
    2. Have you applied the patch on the install if its 10.1.2?
    3. What Designer you are using? (JDev or Eclipse)(I presume Eclipse)
    4. Are you facing the same issue if you use the JDev Designer? or the obant on the Developer prompt?

  • Z68 GD65 G3 7681vP2 ME 8 minor issues.

    Update the bios to 7681vP2.zip following the instructions since the forum flasher didn't work for some odd reason the first time (prolly cause its packed into a exe). It flashed in windows or prepared the USB to flash on boot in DOS which i assume is how the ME part is done at least. The flash went fine and all functionality is retained except a few minor issues.

    ME is matching the latest intel driver version wise in both bios/system 8.0.10.1464
    1. You cannot specify your own clock ratio in BIOS, it will set it but when getting into windows it will show stock speeds @ 3.5.
    2. If you use Turbo it will clock to 3.6 and if you enable enchanced turbo it will fluctuate between 3.6/3.9 as specified for intels specs, but not stay at a consistent 3.9 when stressing the CPU with prime/intel burn test. I believe it should stay at 3.9 until the system is freed up cpu wise and not fluctuate at all.
    There are a few new features and settings but none that really stand out for any possible fix. I needed the updated support for the k90 keyboard which is not provided in a "normal" update as there is none thats provided. If i was suppose to flash only the bios and not update ME as i read in another thread well it was not specified clearly anywhere that i could see.
    The updated bios/me seems to offer better vdroop control along with various other features and multiple fixes for previous issues.

    could be that the change log specifically stating that it supports corsair k60/90 keyboards which gave that impression and its working now. as for being unable to set a specific clock its related to a specific setting "Power Technology" setting being disabled despite in previous revisions it had no effect being disabled. all the other sub settings to it are disabled so i am curious as to whats actually being used if its still set to Custom instead of disabled.
    as for reporting i normally would but the process wants me to register the product which i have no intentions doing so at this time. if some other individual wishes to post the issue which is reproducible, also probably affecting ivybridge cpus then they can do so and link the thread.

    If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
    Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
    The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
    Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
    Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
    Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
    If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
    This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.
