Songs in different, multiple albums without duplicate files

I am looking for a way to have a song in the original album list and in other albums such as greatest hits or compilations without having multiples of the exact same file in iTunes and on my computer.
For example...the song "Tom Sawyer" by Rush, appears on the original album release "Moving Pictures" and subsequent album releases of "Chronicles", "Gold" and "The Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987".
How can I have the song in all the albums without having 4 files of the same mp3 import into iTunes?

This scheme won't work if the files in question have tags. While it is possible to get two or more entires in the iTunes database to point to the same physical file, when the association is made iTunes will read the tag from the file, then update its copy of that data so you just end up with say two copies of track 1 from album A instead of track 1 from album A and track 5 from album B as intended. There are also likely to be issues if iTunes is set to "Keep the iTunes Media folder organised".
It might work if you disable iTunes options to keep tracks organised and used media files without tags, e.g. wav format. I know you can strip the tag from an mp3 in iTunes (convert id3 > None) but it may still get reinstated next time you try to amend any data.
Finally, when you put data onto an Apple device each track needs a unique source file. I'm not certain of the details, but I have found in the past that if you have two entries connected to the same physical file then, when you sync, only one entry makes it into the device's library. This can create the situation where a number of files are always copied over during each sync even though no updates have been made to the library.
Yes, it would be feasible for Apple to re-engineer iTunes so that it could hold some kind of virtual entry consisting of the tag information and a link to the data from another file. This could all be done within the library alone, or "someone" could develop an open standard that iTunes could later adopt. However I see no incentive for anyone to do so, and it certainly isn't coming real soon. So yes, if space is an becoming an issue, start saving for a bigger drive.

Weird, I started composing my reply before Polydorus had posted his response above and independently picked the same example track descriptions. Perhaps one of us is a redundant copy of the other?

  • Songs linked to multiple albums

I am one of those people who look after their itunes library, making sure each song has the correct name and artist, as well as the correct album artwork. I have about 200-300 duplicated songs, but some of the songs belong to multiple abums.
For example the song "Don't Cry" by Guns and Roses, is duplicated and can be found in the album "Live Era '87-'93" and "Use Your Illusion II"
I could delete one of them but then I would not have complete album. But I wonder if it is possible to make one song belong to multiple albums without having multiple songs?
Also, it is possible would it also work on an iPod?
Sorry about my explation, I am no very good when it comes to explaining things.

You explained it very well, but unfortunately there's no way to link one song to multiple albums. Each song only has one album field so there's no way to make iTunes list it under two album names.

  • Songs appearing on multiple albums

    iTunes v7.6.1.9
I think I probably know the answer to this but if someone can confirm it I can sleep easy.
I have over 5500 tracks loaded into iTunes and there are a number of duplicate songs that appear on more than album. Is there a way of telling iTunes this so that I can save space on the pod?

At present if a song is on multiple albums iTunes requires that you have a separate file for each one, it can't at present allocate multiple albums to a single song file. If this is something you'd like to see in a future version you can send feedback/feature requests directly to Apple at this link: Apple Product Feedback

  • "manually manage music..." missing songs when moving multiple albums at once

Since updating to iTunes 10.6.1.7, when adding songs to my iPhone (iPhone 4, iOS 5.1) it does not fully copy every track/song.
I have it set to "manually manage music and videos" ...when I am moving multiple albums to the thing at once, the earlier albums only copy the songs started before I select the next album. Consequently, I find that I only have partial albums for almost everything. I suppose I could be patient and wait for each album to download before selecting another album, but this used to work before and took a lot less time. (I would drag multiple albums into my iPhone and it would queue up all of the tracks(songs) and correctly download asynchronously.)
Is this a known bug or is there something I am doing wrong? (As always, I did some searching for answers but came up empty on this one...)
Thanks in advance for your help!
    MikeY

The order iTunes is showing the tracks can be changed. Select the album column heading to get tracks list in album order. Normally within an album the tracks will list in track order when viewing this way.

  • Why is iTunes splitting my albums songs up into multiple albums

i have ticked the box for varies artists and in the sorting tab i have even done cd1 and cd2 but they are still showing up as albums.

    Hi, trucker2006.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that music you are importing is not grouped together in iTunes.  Here are some steps that will help you with this.
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?

  • Multiple song titles in library despite no duplicate files

Hi y'all. I am really a Google guy, but I am kinda ocd about my files, and when I open Itunes, I should see a regular and a lossless file in my library. Instead I see three, four, five of the same song. I went through and deleted the duplicates, they were from using my droid x2 as a backup device for a while, and then I accidentally re-imported the files twice. (But not five times like the library might suggest)
Basically, I wanna get rid of the clutter, and then figure out how I can take the lossy files off my computer, or consolidate the song names, and just have the lossless versions play, and eventually get lossless onto my google play account, which will not support the Apple M4a format. So I am thinking FLAC is what I hould be converting to. Ideas? I know this is probably NOT the community to come to with Android problems, but please if you have some beef on the Apple/Android crap, save it, I couldn't care less why Apple is the best. I just wanna get my files and all in order, and since this is an Apple problem for the most part, I am asking the Apple community.

Move all your music files outside the iTunes folder to another location (make a new folder for the occasion).
Delete the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder (make a backup copy for safety)
Start iTunes. Your library should be empty.
Select "add to library" and select the folder with your music files.
This should give you a brand new library with no duplicates unless the music files themselves have duplicates.
Check if all your music had been moved back to the ITunes Music folder.
Check if the music you bought from the Music Store can be played (you may have to authorize your computer again, but this seems unlikely).
Delete the folder where you copied your music to, once you're certain everything is back in place.

  • Nano3rdgen Copying playlist from itunes to ipod and it says it can't copy certain songs to ipod cos of file type. These problem songs all from same album, all ACC file type and all copied fine when I copied the album itself few weeks ago-help!

When copying playlist from itunes to nano3rd message comes saying 9 of songs can't be copied to ipod cos of file type. These 9 are all from same album, all ACC and all copied fine when I copied the album itselm some weeks ago.  Rest of playlist was ACC too.  P.S. album is a CD-R copied version-is this an issue? HELP I AM DESPAIRING!

I never laughed in all my life. Here I was, inserting the cd Dance with Me, thinking it's not going to copy the whole thing. yeah, right.
Sure, it prompted me, Do I want to replace the songs, so of course I said "no, don't replace the songs". and guess what it did. It copied the whole cd (at least I got my two songs).
I went into the itunes library, and sure enough, all the songs were there twice. So what did my intelligent brain think of? I just unchecked the doubled songs and stuck my ipod into my computer and it synched up and I got what I wanted.
Now what did I do wrong when it prompted me. I clicked on "don't replace" and it replaced them anyway.
Am I dumb? or is itunes stupid?
    thanks, Melody

    DMS99,
If you are using iTunes on a computer, the arrow is just to the right of the song price, like this:
If you are using it on an iPhone or iPad, it may look different.

  • Multiple albums for one song?

Is there any way have a song show up in multiple albums without duplicating the song? I have a lot of these, mostly songs that show up on soundtracks. I want 'Whiter Shade of Pale' to show up on 'Procol Harum' and 'The Big Chill Soundtrack.'

You can always add the other album names to the comments section of the file if it means that much to me.
Personally, I only list the name of the collection (soundtrack, best of, etc.) if it is the only version I have of it. But if I later import the original album, any of those songs that are also on a best of collection (after verifying they are truly the same versions) I delete the Best of or soundtrack version and retain the one with the original information (album name, date, etc.).

  • How do i restore photo albums from time machine backups without duplicates?

how do i restore photo albums without duplicates from time machine backups? thx

Worth updating?  Totally a personal decision. For some it would be. For others it would not?
Upgrading, if there are no problems, does not affect your data. And since bad things do happen you always have a good backup. Especially when doing any upgrade.
Your password question has nothing to do with iPhoto. Try it in the OS forum

  • Check for Duplicate files.

I have multiple folders with duplicate files, i was wondering what is the best way to check for duplication based on file content even if the file name is slightly different.

There are several commercial software options. I suggest that you use the ones that use SHA1 matching.
Decloner is pretty good, and it comes with a 30-day trial that is FULL FEATURED.
    http://www.pixelespressoapps.com/decloner/
Only works on snow leopard and up.
Their website conviniently compares other duplicate file software packages.
I purchased Twins, which is also great.
    http://www.rockysandstudio.com/apps/twins
Only works on Lion and up.
Remember, SHA1 is the way to go if you want to find duplicates with highest accuracy.

  • When I down load photo albums using i tunes from my computer to my ipad2, the download knocks out or erases the prior picture album.  Can you help me to be able to down load multiple albums.  I keep my photos in Picasa on my windows computer

When I down load photo albums from my computer to my i pad using i tunes, it erases my prior album.  My picture are stored in Picasa.  Can you help me download multiple albums without losing any of them.  Thank you.

Photos that you sync from your computer can't be deleted directly in the iPad's Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync - so you need to include all the albums that you want to be on your iPad in each photo sync, what you are effectively currently doing is telling iTunes to replace the last synced album with the new one.

  • I recently deleted many duplicate files. In the midst of it my Itunes songs are not in Itunes. They are in two different folders. One under 'Music' in my ID. And two under a MyMusic file in Documents. How do I know which one to import?

Thanks, this is not an ideal answer but probably the most sensible one in my case.
I will try it unless someone has a better suggestion, but I'll wait a bit as it will take me a few days anyway (I had actually tried to create a new smaller playlist or download by album, but at this stage the music app is not letting me queue a list of songs for download - I think I will have to disable and re-enable iTunes match which will probably delete all the songs).
I have to say I am not very impressed with Apple here - having an online backup of all your data and beeing able to restore it to a new device easily was a strong selling point of iCloud. For music, they are Definitly not delivering at the stage.
