Spaces in path name problem

Dear all,
It seems that spaces in path names generally are a bit of a problem. However, I haven't found a solution. I am trying to create a file like this:
File m_outFile = new File(m_inFile.getAbsolutePath() + "_out");The path to m_inFile has a space, so I get a FileNotFoundException. I tried surrounding the path name with quotes like this:
File m_outFile = new File("\"" + m_inFile.getAbsolutePath() + "_out" + "\"");That didn't work either. Any ideas how to best deal with this? Thanks a lot in advance.
Cheers,
N.

Thanks a lot for the replies!
I ran some detailed tests and it turns out that the space in the path is indeed the problem, however not for the actual file creation, but rather for the XML transformation. I should have mentioned that the file that causes the problem serves as the source for a javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamResult, sorry about that.
The actual FileNotFoundException is thrown when doing the transformation from a DOM object like this:
DOMSource Xsource = new DOMSource(doc);
Result dest = new StreamResult(m_outFile);
transformer.transform(Xsource, dest);I ran some test with the following two path variants:
m_outFile = new File(File.separator + "spacetest" + File.separator + "Test.xml");
m_outFile = new File(File.separator + "space test" + File.separator + "Test.xml");The exception is thrown only in the second case, where the directory name has a space in it. The message reads:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: F:\space%20test\Test.xml (The system can't find the given path)This makes sense, since apparently the space gets converted to "%20" somewhere along the way.
So, it boils down to the question, how can I make the transformer use the correct path name? Adding quotes to the path doesn't help.
Cheers,
N.

  • Spaces in path names

    Hi,
I am trying to create an applescript that will open the Firefox profile manager so that I can just run the script rather than opening terminal and entering the command each time. Basically Firefox doesn't let you manage profiles like Mozilla throught the tools menu, you have to quit the program and enter the appropriate command into terminal (assuming Firefox.app is in the Applications folder):
    /Applications/firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager
In my case i have it in a different folder with the path:
    /Applications/Internet\ Applications/Web\ Browsers/Firefox/firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager
I don't know much about scripting, but i know scripts can run UNIX commands using the "do shell script" command. The problem is I don't know how to tell Applescript how to interpret the spaces in the pathname literally, i keep getting an unknown token error. Can someone help me? Here is the script as I have it so far:
    do shell script "/Applications/Internet\ Applications/Web\ Browsers/Firefox/firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager "

In the code below 'FireFox.app' was placed onto an internal hard disk drive (HD2), other than the internal boot drive (HD3), the full path being ...
    HD2:Demo (folder) [1]:Internet:Web Browsers:Firefox 1.5.0.6:Firefox.app
This in UNIX format translates to ...
    /Volumes/HD2/Demo\ \(folder\)\ \[1\]/Internet/Web\ Browsers/FireFox\ 1.5.0.6/Firefox.app/
    Code 01
    set fireFox_Path to "/Volumes/HD2/Demo\\ \\(folder\\)\\ \\[1\\]/Internet/Web\\ Browsers/FireFox\\ 1.5.0.6/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox"
    do shell script (fireFox_Path & " -profilemanager")
    Code 02
    set fireFox_Path to "/Volumes/HD2/Demo\\ \\(folder\\)\\ \\[1\\]/Internet/Web\\ Browsers/FireFox\\ 1.5.0.6/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox" & " -profilemanager"
    do shell script fireFox_Path
    Code 03
    do shell script ("/Volumes/HD2/Demo\\ \\(folder\\)\\ \\[1\\]/Internet/Web\\ Browsers/FireFox\\ 1.5.0.6/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox" & " -profilemanager")
    For a ' ' (space) to exist in a UNIX path - the ' ' (space) must be proceeded by a '\'.
For a '\' to exist in your AppleScript code - the '\' must be proceeded by a '\'.
Thus '\\ ' is needed for each ' ' (space) in your AppleScript code, of a UNIX path.
The same use of '\\' applies to '(', ')', '[', and ']', as well as, many other characters.

  • How to set path names with spaces ?

I want to set a variable to a path name that contains spaces that will work with cd. If I set the variable with
    set p1="My MPW Folder"
    then using echo $p1 yeilds
    My MPW Folder
however is I do cd $p1 I get
    cd: Too many arguments.
If I manualy type cd "My MPW Folder" it works. I just don't know which escape character I can use to allow the spaces to be accepted as part of the path name.
    Thanks,
Power PC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GB RAM

You already know that you can use quotes around a string to keep whitespace as part of the string, so: cd "$p1"

  • Problem with long path names?

I tried to unpack the PHP eclipse package to a folder named like the ZIP package (pdt-2.0.0GA_debugger-5.2.15.v20081217-all-in-one-win32). WinRAR stopped with an error message (something like "file name to long"). I was unable to delete the folder until I shortened the directory name. Extracting worked only with a short path name.
Did anybody experience something like this?
    Windows 7 x64 - Gigabyte EP-45-DS3 (Intel P45 chip set), 4GB RAM, ATI 4670

I never used the compressed folder option nor I'm sure I really understand what this feature is.I can browse "into" an archive, open it like a folder (is this the "compressed folder" feature?). I extracted the sub folder via drag and drop. The extraction was very slow, but it finished. When I tried to delete the folder, there was an error message stating that the content could not be saved to the trash because of long file names.
I repeated the test and initially created that awful long path which WinRAR was using (pdt-2.0.0GA_debugger-5.2.15.v20081217-all-in-one-win32) and extracted the archives content into that folder. This time extraction stopped with error message "0x80010135: path too long".
All if seen so far seems to indicate that there's a max_path problem with Explorer (only x64 version?) and system parts based on it (like wastebasket), not only a problem with WinRAR.

  • Sql server problem - space in table name

    Hi
I am getting the following error
    java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: In
    correct syntax near 'Mapping'.
    when running the sql statement
    stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * from dbo.Smallworld US$CMF Mapping")

I don't know for sure if this will work, but MS SQL Server allows you to reference tables with spaces in the names using [] syntax:
    SELECT * from [CMF Mapping]

  • Unable to set environment due to space in Directory name

I have java classes and other executables under E:\Oracle\JDeveloper 3.1\.. JDeveloper 3.1(with space) is default during installation. In some cases, if I exacute files under that hirarchy from DOS prompt(due to Tomcat), it fails to execute due to the space between JDev and 3.1. I'm eager to know what kind of solution can be applied for this kind of problem?
    TIA,
    Mark

What we all do here in development to save a lot of typing is do use the DOS SUBST command to substitute a drive letter for a long path name (including ones with spaces) and then use the SUBST'd drive letter to work with the JDev Home.
    For example:
    SUBST J: "E:\Program Files\Oracle\JDeveloper3.1"
Then you can use J:\ to refer to the JDeveloper installation home.
Nothing special about J:, you can use any letter.

  • How to use path names for library filter?

    Hi all,
I have been looking for a way to use the library filter functionality to show only images in a particular folder (or subfolder thereof). From the help pages [http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/WSAB7B303E-081D-4617-BF47-B4B8D3D49CC3.htm l] I found that the image path is included when you filter using 'any searchable field'.
However, I do not seem to be able to use a full path name, just the individual directory names. To give an example, I can locate files in c:\data\photos using 'contains all: c data photos', but this will also select images in 'c:\data\someotherproject\photos'. I have tried all combinations of slashes and backslashes, but have found no solution to this problem. Does anyone know what the internal representation for the path name is, and if it's possible to search for it?
Just to pre-empt the obvious answer: I know that you can simply click on a folder to show its contents. However, using the filter bar would be a more permanent selection of a working directory, which remains when you click on a collection, for example.
    Thanks.
    Simon

Sorry, I could have been clearer.
What I'm trying to achieve is the following. My computer contains photos by myself, my wife and others, organised in three main folders. Having them in separate catalogs isn't convenient, because we often have photos of the same event (outings, holidays). However, most of the time I only want to work on my photos, and my wife wants to work on hers. A directory filter would be a good and fool-proof way of doing things. I am currently using a special keyword to do this, but I must remember to apply the correct keyword when importing.
Adding a folder as a favorite only works to select that folder in its entirety. What I would like to do is to have a 'master' folder selected and then use Lightroom as I normally would (select folders, collections, etc) Filtering by path name would enable me to do just that - and it does, except that there are false positives due to not being able to enter a full path name.
A smart collection has the same problem: the 'Folder' rule doesn't seem to support paths. And even if it did, it's not possible to select two collections with a logical 'and' operator, unless you make a new smart collection for each possibility.
My current keyword workaround is functional, but slightly error-prone. And in any case, if 'any searchable field' includes the file path, it stands to reason that there should be a way to match that with the entire path. The documentation isn't clear about this, so I hope that anyone can shed some light on this.

  • Mplayer can't play files with spaces in their name

After scratching my head and reinstalling codecs several times without luck, and old memory resurfaced of this occuring before and I managed to solve the problem.
The thing is that if you doubleclick a file in Nautilus, and said files has spaces in its name, mplayer won't be able to play it, and gives a very cryptic error message, ie "cannot play file a%20b.avi" if the name of the file is "a b.avi".
The trick is mentioned in this thread -- you edit /usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop and change 'Exec=gmplayer %U' to 'Exec=gmplayer %F'.
The bug has been around forever, and hasn't been fixed yet. Perhaps the mplayer devs don't want to fix it. In any case, I would propose that either we fix this in the mplayer Arch package, or that someone more knowledgeable than I get in touch with the devs about it.
Just a suggestion, but I think it's kind of important. It's really confusing to new users.

In my opinion, it it's not arch's job to fix bugs from upstream, no matter if it's mplayer or gnome's fault. Of course there are exceptions, eg if a bug in a critical package hardlocks the whole system, or adds a huge security risk.
I would like to belive that the general arch user is smart enough to find one of the 30 threads about this bug (or the entry on the bugtracker) and fix it themselves. Personaly I would put this in the same category as packages that don't have a .desktop file at all from upstream.
Oh, and as a small sidenote: http://phraktured.net/patching-patching-patching.html

  • How do I hide the file names/path names of embedded images in a PDF document?

I created a PDF document from a Word document, and the problem is that the PDF document shows the file names and path names for all of the embedded images in the PDF document. I don't want that information displayed. I don't want to send the PDF out to clients and have them read the names I've assigned to those images, plus it looks messy. And I've lost many of the original image files so they only exist in the Word document, thus I can't go back and rename them. I searched the internet for an answer but I couldn't find one anywhere.

When you create a tagged (accessible) PDF file from Word, placed bitmap images will use their filename as the "ALT text" if you don't define something else for the text to say, because an image without any ALT text is a failure against the accessibility standards. You can't change that default action, so you should put your own meaningful text into the ALT field for each image - which is what you should be doing anyway if the PDF is standards-compliant.
You can can set the text in Word, but it depends on your version as to where the dialogs are - Google for it - or you can change/delete it in Acrobat using the tags navigation pane on the left side of the window (right-click the sidebar if it's not visible). Drill down through the tags structure to find the "<Figure>" tag you want to change, right-click and choose Properties, then put something in the "Alternative text" field. This process isn't something you can easily automate, but if you don't need tags at all, you can save without tags (or print to PDF).

  • Max 255 characters in MS Office file name problem

When saving files via WebDAV to KM folders within collaboration rooms we often hit this limit of 255 characters that Office documents allow for file names (218 for MS Excel).
Because the complete webDAV URL to portal is made up of server name + a lot of portal stuff, the number of characters left for subcatalogs and document within each room is very limited.
Has anyone got a good solution to this problem?
    WebDAV url example:
    oslpep.agra.int:50000/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/room_extensions/
    cm_stores/documents/workspaces/303c5e8a-cb16-2810-9aa7-caaf71de197/subfolder/document.doc
Error message in Excel when saving:
"The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following:
    - Make sure the specified folder exists.
    - Make sure the folder that contains the file is not read-only.
    - Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters: < > ? [ ] : | *.
    - Make sure the file/path name doesn't contain more than 218 characters."

    Julian, Robert
Thanks for help so far. I have now upgraded to SP2 and the situation is the same.
As far as I see the Cumulative security update is specified to solve IE-related problems. The problem with WebDAV editing of files in portal does as such not involve opening Office documents through IE, but rather editing these in any Office program and saving directly to portal through a mapped network place (a KM folder).
I still cannot see that Microsoft has published anything about a fix for this problem.

About error when saving document: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;213983
Is there something I have overlooked?

  • Files with "alien" names in directories with very long path names

    Hi all,
first of all - I dont know if this is the right forum for my Question,
but I could not find any better ;-)
I have a problem with some files with "alien" names with MIXED characters from different foreign countries
(e.g. "Φέτα (τυρί) 只有沙盒或您的用户页可以用作測試ורת המבחנים בחינוך פור.txt").
Sometimes - whenn those files are exists in a directory with a very long path name,
then the windows api fails to handle these files.
For example GetFileAttributesW() returns error 2
and ntQueryDirectoryFile does not return this file in the list (etc. pp.)
I have this behaviour not with other files in those directories (e.g. "abc.txt")
and also not when those names are a little bit shorter
or the directorys name is not too long.
So I guess, there is a bug either in the API or in the file system...?!
I know that such a file name is a generic one,
but I have a situation where I have to handle any file with any name -
even in directories with very long path names...
So please no suggestions like "use shorter paths" or "convert it to a short name"....
thx in advance and Best regards,
    dp.
