Spark skinning - combobox transparent background issue
Hi,
I have a custom combobox component whose background is transparent when it is in a titlewindow , but looks opaque in a cell of a datagrid. The code for background for combobox is
<!--- Defines the appearance of drop-down list's background fill. -->
<s:Rect id="background" left="1" right="1" top="1" bottom="1" >
<s:fill>
<!---@private
The color of the drop down's background fill.
The default color is 0xFFFFFF.
-->
<s:SolidColor id="bgFill" color="0xFFFFFF"/>
</s:fill>
</s:Rect>
The code for background fill of titlewindow is
<!-- layer 2: background fill -->
<!--- Defines the appearance of the TitleWindowSkin class's background. -->
<s:Rect id="background" left="1" top="1" right="1" bottom="1">
<s:fill>
<!--- Defines the TitleWindowSkin class's background fill. The default color is 0xFFFFFF. -->
<s:SolidColor id="backgroundFill" color="#FFFFFF"/>
</s:fill>
</s:Rect>
Though setting the alpha to 1 in either code did not work. Please help.
Setting of contentBackgroundAlpha for the combobox worked.

Spark skins, modules and custom themes: linking issues?
I've read some other threads on this topic that were related to the pre-release versions, but I can't get a complete answer get. I also opened an issue in the bug tracker (https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-30748), but I'm also posting here, hoping to get some help.
Basically, I have a bunch of skin classes for the standard Spark controls (e.g. s:Button), as well as other skin classes for my custom SkinnableComponent objects. I need to reuse those skins in many projects, so I created a theme: I put in a Flex Library Project all my skin classes, all related graphical assets, and a defaults.css stylesheet that associates each component with its correct skinClass.
Now, in my modular application project, what is the correct method to link this compiled theme SWC? I tried different ways, and found some issue for each one:
In <app>-config.xml, using the <theme> compiler option: this way, modules don't pick up the skinClass correctly (default components use the standard Spark skin, and for custom components I get many skinNotFound errors).. its a pity, I like this method because command-line invocations of MXMLC (build scripts) automatically apply the settings in the config.xml file, while I have to manually keep in sync any additional compiler argument.
In <app>-config.xml, using the <theme> compiler option and add -compiler.isolated-styles=false: seems to work, but not always.. moreover, the option must be put in additional compiler argument, and not in <app>-config.xml, to have effect... I understand that the config.xml file, in a modular application, is only applied to the main application (or that it must replicated with correct name for each module)?
In additional compiler arguments, using the theme+= option.. these arguments should be used also for modules compilation, and this seems the most effective solution at the moment (swf size of compiled modules has slightly increased), but skinNotFound errors still happens sometimes, usually going away after a clean build.. maybe this has something with the incremental build performed by Flash Builder and/or optimization of modules?
Right now, I've tried adding also -keep-all-type-selectors in the compiler arguments to see how it goes...
Is my scenario supported by Flex 4? How should I setup my environment? I read how to create custom themes in the official documentation (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf69084-7f85.html) and a specific help section exists about using styles with modules (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf69084-799a.html#WSda 78ed3a750d6b8f1b97f82d12508050aa0-8000), but it only cover simple style sheets, no specific information about compiled themes and the suggested linking strategy.
I'm using Flash Builder 4.5.1 and compiling with Flex SDK 4.5.0 (both application and theme), the project use some Halo components (e.g. DateField) but almost all components are Spark, and I use Spark component for <s:Application> and <s:Module>. Modules are optimized for the main application, and are loaded using the ModuleManager.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cosma ColanicchiaI'm not sure Spark components will work if the compatibility mode is set to

Spark VideoPlayer - Transparent background
Please how to set transparent background for <s:VideoPlayer/> component? The standard color is black, but I need a SIMPLE way, how to change it. I don't want to create my own brand-new skin. Is it possible to do it using ActionScript?
Thanks

and in the css
mx|DataGrid
backgroundAlpha:0;

Photos with transparent background weird issue in album
There is something very strange happening
What I did
I saved two images that had transparent background
When I view it in my photo album the thumbnail shows the image but for the "background" it is some other random photo that isn't even in my camera roll! It just shows up only when I save these images with transparent background. This happened for two images and the photos showing up are different (from the same night because I can see who is in it).
When I view these images larger, the background photos do not appear , so it is very strange
I took a screen shot of this too and would like to send to apple supportI would not really expect AppleTv to handle transparency in an image, though maybe it does and this is some kind of bug.
I would regard transparency handling as a non-basic feature to be honest, one that the majority of users will not expect to use or use.
Does iPhoto handle transparency properly?
Send feedback to:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
It may be something they can add fairly easily, but it may not either.
Don't expect a reply from that link.

Animated gif with transparent background
When I import in Keynote an animated gif with transparent background. The background becomes white. I did the following tests:
If I extract a single image from the animated gif and import it in keynote the background is actually transparent but it becomes white when I import the whole gif.
I also checked with other applications (NeoOffice) and the animated gif does come out with a transparent background.
Do I do something wrong in Keynote ?This has been an ongoing issue for me since I switched from Powerpoint to Keynote. Most of the animated gifs with transparent backgrounds that I used with Powerpoint are no longer transparent in Keynote. You may want to search for those earlier threads on this topic...
To summarize: I've had to open up my animated gifs in After Effects and use the Color Key effect to restore transparency, with mixed success.

How to export animated gif with transparent background and glow effect?
I've been having issues lately with creating animated gifs in flash. I finally figured out a way to export a gif with a transparent background but I'm now having an issue with it again because I'm using a glow effect. When the gif is exported the glow effect changes into a very poor quality and becomes less of a glow and more like a solid color. I've even exported a png sequence from flash and put it into photoshop then created a gif from there but I'm still having the same issue. Is there anyway I can properly export this in gif form so the quality is the same as when I test it in flash?
I've provided an image of what my issue looks like and the settings (I've messed around with the settings and this is the best I can come up with) . This is in photoshop but the result is similar in flash. The left one is what it originally looks like and the right is what it will look like after exporting. As you can see as I said before the glow changes into more of a solid color kind of like a border. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!A GIF is limited to 256 colors while a glow effect likely wants to tie up thousands (let's just say 'lots') of variations of tone.

Images in themes no longer have transparent background after upgrade?
I've just upgraded to iLife 09 and also Snow Leopard. Unfortunately when I open iDVD the 7.0 themes won't load properly. There is no dropzone in the Revolution theme and the Sunflower theme moving images no longer have transparent background so have black backgrounds. Even the Apple icon has a black background, it's as though the gifs have gone to jpegs and no longer transparent??
Older themes seem to work better but the Apple icon always has a black background?
I've deleted the preferences for iDVD but it hasn't helped & loaded all the updates that the system is telling me to. Any ideas?Hi thanks for reply & the useful app. I've deleted and reinstalled just iDVD v7 but I still have the same problem. Indeed reading around it looks like older macs cannot handle the new version but my iMac is relatively new so assume many more folks would have the same issue but I can't find anyone else with the same issue as me? Also these exact same themes ran fine before my upgrades (OS & iLife) All other apps run fine.
I did burn a disk & the quality was terrible on a DVD player, fine on a PC/Mac. I thought I hadn't selected PAL but all the settings seemed ok but its B&W and scratchy from the DVD player.

Images with transparent backgrounds in MDM
I've got several images in MDM with transparent backgrounds, yet when i look at these in image manager (or thumbnails in data manager) they look terrible. The transparency is black for example, among other issues. These images are all okay in photoshop, they have been saved as .png and imported through the data manager.
Has this import ruined these image files on the way in? When my search engines etc extract the images, what of the transparencies?Hi Adam,
MDM makes use of Internet Explorer quite frequently. I can imagine that this engine is also used to display images in MDM. However, Internet Explorer in version 6 does not support transparency in PNG images. That is why the black background occurs.
Since your images after upload are only saved in a binary object in the database, you should not encounter any data loss when using the same images. If you need to create variants, I would consider using Photoshop for the creation of those.
I hope that helps you further.
Best regards

Transparency flattening issue (I think)
Hi all,
I'd appreciate your help with this. I've tried researching this through the forum yet still find myself confused. I think it's a transparency flattening issue, but I'm unsure of how to fix it, and even at what point to fix it.
I designed this for a magazine ad in InDesign CS2 and exported to PDF. The polaroids have drop shadows, which look fine on screen:
But when I print I get these ugly "borders" where the transparencies are:
Can't get rid of them, except by printing the PDF as an image.
My questions are:
1) Assuming this is a transparency issue, how do I fix this? I've read about transparency presets on the forum, but (please forgive my lameness) I'm not sure how to actually apply them.
2) At what point do I fix this? I mean, as a best practice, is this something that's addressed inside InDesign, or during the export from InDesign, or when printing the PDF? It looked fine in the magazine so obviously they were able to fix it, but I'd still like to know what I'm doing wrong to save them extra work in the future.
I have Adobe CS2 and Acrobat 7 Pro on a Windows XP Pro.
Many thanks for your help,
EdThat's quite a color shift, too, on the background which seems like more than you'd see from a poor image capture of the printed piece.
I bet you are using a spot color. Unless you are actually paying to have that spot color printed in the magazine (if they even would), you shouldn't be using it. Make sure you go into the ink manager and convert all spots to process, or replace any spot colors with process colors. You should be the one handling the color conversion, and using process color will simplify the flattening, I think.

Initial checkin of the "More styles for Spark skins" feature. Details here:
http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/MoreStylesforSparkSkins
There are some known issues:
Panel bottom corners not rounded correctly when the panel has a control bar
cornerRadius on Tab and DateChooser non functional
cornerRadius values > 4 have drawing artifacts in the "down" state of Button and button-like components
TextInput/TextArea incorrectly list lineBreak and verticalAlign as valid styles
This checkin also includes a couple minor unrelated bug fixes:
Remove MiniDebugTarget. This is a logging target that used MiniDebug, which hasn't worked since Flex 1.5
Fix RTEs when setting focusSkin to null
Optimization: don't measure skins if the host component has explicit sizes
QE notes: Yes, many baseline images will need to be regenerated

How do I turn of ligatures in the font rendering?
My flex project involves trying to match the font rendering of Apache's Batik rendering of SVG and ligatures have been turned off in that codebase. Is there any way (even roundabout) to turn ligatures off in flash?

Round 2 of bug fixes for the Spark skins for Halo components. Thanks to Alex for help with the data grid issues.
Bugs fixed:
SDK-19655 - Setting rowCount property on DataGrid causes extra blank row to be displayed
SDK-19652 - Items in a DataGrid do not line up after scrolling.
SDK-19605 - disabled Halo ColorPicker with Gumbo skin draws too dark
SDK-19596 - When you have a single button on an Alert, the left edge looks flatter than the right
SDK-19585 - Menus compiled with the halo theme in Flex 4 have a different backgroundColor than in Flex 3
SDK-19665 - Halo List with Gumbo skin doesnt draw the alternating item color all the way to the right edge of the control if VScrollBar is present
SDK-19651 - odd header rendering issue on Halo DataGrid with Gumbo skin
QA Notes: The alert layout code was positioning the buttons/text on sub-pixel boundaries if the width or height of the alert was an odd number of pixels. We always snap to pixel boundaries now, but this may cause bitmap compare issues with Alert.

Spark Skin - Trouble finding selected itemimage
Hey All,
I've applied this solution to my project http://www.flex4fun.com/Ex/ComboBoxNew3/ComboBoxNew3.html except what I want to do is display the image and not the text.
In the skin for the solution above I replaced this
<s:TextInput id="textInput"
left="0" right="18" top="0" bottom="0"
skinClass="spark.skins.spark.ComboBoxTextInputSkin"/>
with
<s:Image source="{hostComponent.selectedItem.source}"/>
or
<s:Image source="{hostComponent.selectedItem.icon}"/>
I have a feeling that {hostComponent.selectedItem.source} wont work in my case becuase the source has two parts to it, a label and an image.
Anybody got any ideas that when I select an item from my combobox that the image only is dispayed in the bombobox label?
Thanks for your time!

Transparent Backgrounds for Graphics
Someplace in here a couple months ago one of you brilliant folks mentioned manipulation of images in AppleWorks so as to obtain a transparent (rather than a white) background. I remember testing it in ClarisWorks, and it worked there also, but like a dope I forgot to document the steps.
Anyone help with that?
Thanks 0db
OS10.4.9 / Dual 2ghz G5, 4.5g SDRAM / 1.5ghz G4, 2g SDRAM / SE30, 256k RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9)Fortunately. when I write a fairly lengthy response, I try to save it for inspiration in case the need should come up again. Here is mine for this transparency issue in AppleWorks. Note, though, that I've had some problems getting this to consistently work lately & I don't know why. For the last couple of years I've been doing most of my work that requires this kind of stuff in Pages.
AppleWorks doesn't handle transparency well, even using formats such as .gif or .png saved with transparent backgrounds in another application. However, a few years ago I accidentally discovered that if an object is flipped or rotated in AppleWorks, the background will become transparent. The object doesn't even have to be .gif or .png & have transparency.
Once I discovered this, I used GraphicConverter to flip an image horizontally & save it as a PICT. Then I insert the object in my AppleWorks document & flip it back. I use PICT because it is the only graphic format that will retain the native resolution. All other graphic formats are changed to 72 dpi by AppleWorks.
