Special character [ ] on the mainframe

I'm trying java on the mainframe (03/390 with Unix System Services Enabled, Java 1.3.1). This is all new to me so bare with me.
When I compile the HelloWorld.java code:
class HelloWorld {
public static void main(String[]args) {
System.out.println("Hello World!") ;
in my DOS window it works fine and I am able to run it.
When I compile the same,exact code in my unix shell, I receive the following compile error:
HelloWorld.java:3: illegal character: \168
public static void main(String[]args) {

HelloWorld.java:5: ')' expected

Is there a difference in the character sets between the systems or am I just missing something?

Doesn't 0S/390 use some form of EBCDIC which is not ASCII compatible?
If encodings are the problem, you can force "javac" to interprete the file using a particular character encoding with the "-encoding" switch. Example:
javac -encoding US-ASCII HelloWorld.java

  • A special character in the last column in my external table

    Hello,
    I'v made a external table that looks like this :
    CREATE
    TABLE "REC_XLS"
    "FINANCE_DATE" VARCHAR2(50 BYTE),
    "CREATION_DATE" VARCHAR2(50 BYTE),
    "SENT_DATE" VARCHAR2(50 BYTE),
    "REMARKS" VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    "REMAINING_QUANTITY" VARCHAR2(30 BYTE),
    "CODE" VARCHAR2(30 BYTE)
    ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL
    TYPE ORACLE_LOADER DEFAULT DIRECTORY "LOADER" ACCESS PARAMETERS (
    RECORDS DELIMITED BY newline LOAD WHEN CODE!=BLANKS Skip 1 FIELDS
    TERMINATED BY 0X'09' MISSING FIELD VALUES ARE NULL REJECT ROWS
    WITH
    ALL NULL FIELDS ( Finance_date,
    creation_date, sent_date, Remarks,
    remaining_quantity, code) location ( 'Finance.tsv' )
    I exported the result in xls file and I saw in the last column a special character. The result of a copy and paste is prenseted here : "ABE
    You should notice that the last quote is in the upper line instead of at the end of ABE. This means, I think, that there is a carriage return at the end. And the 0X'09' is the tab separator. How can I get rid of this character ?

    my guess is that you run the load on unix server which uses default LF end-of-line character and the file has dos CRLF end-of-line, the easiest option is to change records delimiter in the DDL and replace "RECORDS DELIMITED BY newline" with code below
    RECORDS DELIMITED BY '\r\n'in general end-of-line can be really any character, sample above shows CRLF but it can be TAB, space, | or any other character or set of characters. I have samples of special characters on my blog http://jiri.wordpress.com/2009/01/29/oracle-external-tables-by-examples-part-1/
    hope this helps

    Actually my problem is, i am loding some datas with some speicial character(*,&,#).My data got loaded with out any error.
    The same special character(*,&,#) i checked it over the table RSALLOWEDCHAR.
    But the special character character is not available in that table.
    Thats why i am thinking , with out any error how my datas got uploaded.
    At the sametime special char is not maintained in the table RSALLOWEDCHAR.

  • Is there a Special Character for the number of pages in a document?

    I'm creating a template (in cs6) for a series of documents of variable length, and each document needs to be numbered with the format, "page A of Z." I see the special character for inserting the current page number (A) and I'd like to have the number of pages in the document (Z) added automatically as well. Is there a wildcard, special character, or script that will accomplish this? I'd rather not have to enter the number of pages manually as the value will change as these go through the editing process; I'd prefer to have the numbers update automatically. Has anybody done this before?

    Your first suggestion is the only way to capture the last page of a book that's comprised of independent document files. The last page number text variable works only within a single document.
    Anyone who wants a last page in book text variable badly enough can post a feature request at Wishform.

    You can also, much more simply, create a new text variable. There is
    specifically one for "last page number". That's much simpler.
    Type>Text Variables>Define>New, and in the Type dropdown just select
    "last page number".

    1)Declare a variable and assign the special character to that variable.
    2)Then use the CONCATENATE option to get the value in the string variable.
    Just copy and execute this code.
    REPORT zztest.
    <b>DATA : temp(1) VALUE ''''.</b> Decalare your special character

    Any idea how to enter it ?

    touch and hold the "S"...you will get different options for the letter...it must be a lowercase "s" and not and uppercase "S" otherwise you won't get what you are looking for. So, make sure the arrow isn't highlighted

    this message failing with the error “Exception occurred when persisting state to the database.”
    As per the analysis , Orchestration is unable to convert to xml document from a

  • Special character in interactive report using filter

    Hi,
    I created an interactive report and in this report there is a filter to search any row from specific value linked to a specific column.
    As example this report displays a board with some columns like "SR number", "Status", "Description", ....
    If I use this filter with standard character all works fine :
    - in the filter's list of values I choose "Region" column
    - in the search field I put "SE"
    - click on go and the board is generated with all correct rows.
    If I use this filter with special character (french character in my case), this filter changes this special character and the request doesn't return any row.
    Example :
    - in the filter's list of values I choose "Statut" column
    - in the search field I put "Réception"
    - the filter's expression is modified from "Réception" to "Réception" so no row is returned (filter - Statut contains 'Réception' - no data found)
    I modified the character set used by the apex DAD changing the nls_lang parameter in the wdbsvr.app file from AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 (database character set) to AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
    But when I check the apex DAD character set after the web server restart (about Application Express in my workspace) I get :
    NLS_CHARACTERSET: WE8ISO8859P1
    DAD CHARACTERSET: ISO-8859-1
    No change.
    I used the Application Express 3.2.0.00.27 with Oracle E-business Suite (11.5.10.2).
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Olivier

    Hi,
    Thank you for your answer.
    But I already installed french language on apex.
    Unfortunately issue occurs yet.
    To install the french language I followed these steps :
    - I set the NLS_LANG to American_America.AL32UTF8
    - sqlplus sys/**** as sysdba
    - ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA = APEX_030200;
    - and I executed the load_fr.sql script
    Thank you for your help.

  • Special Character in Subject Field of Discussion Forum

    I am creating a new discussion, in the subject when i enter "Portal Discussion?" then it gives error that special character is not allowed. But i want to use the "?" in the subject at the time of creation.
    After creating the discussion i can edit the same thing with special characters, then why SharePoint is not allowing to enter special character at the time of creation.

    Hi
    Refer this link
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/6e7a7eae-26fc-467f-bfdc-7c5d5ff49a95/discussion-forum-storing-special-character-in-title-differently?forum=sharepointdevelopmentlegacy
    It seems that SharePoint will allow the Title of the discussion board to remain with the special characters, but the actual URL will not be allowed and will strip them from the final URL.  SharePoint Manager easily shows this, btw.
    So, there are probably many different ways to get what you are looking for, but one way could be to have a Linq query look for all Discussion Boards on a given site and then return the Title and the DefaultViewUrl, which the latter could then be prefixed by
    the SPWeb.Url to give you something like "Testing? , /" for the title and http://mysite/Lists/Testing/AllItems.aspx (assuming
    that is the actual default view) which you could then use as the final URL for your hyperlink in your web part.
    In the code snippet below you can see the Linq query (which I assumed from your post that you need to query to find the Discussion Boards) and a simple DataTable that you could then use to populate a repeater or you just omit the DataTable and
    enumerate the results from the query yourself:
    var linqResults
    = from list in oSPWeb.Lists.Cast<SPList>() where list.BaseTemplate
    == SPListTemplateType.DiscussionBoardselect list;
    DataTable oDataTable
    = new DataTable();
    DataColumn oDataColumn_Title
    = new DataColumn("Title", typeof(string));
    oDataTable.Columns.Add(oDataColumn_Title);
    DataColumn oDataColumn_URL
    = new DataColumn("URL", typeof(string));
    oDataTable.Columns.Add(oDataColumn_URL);
    foreach (SPList oSPList in linqResults)
    DataRow oDataRow
    = oDataTable.NewRow();
    oDataRow[
    "Title"]
    = oSPList.Title.ToString();
    oDataRow[
    "URL"]
    = oSPWeb.Url + oSPList.DefaultViewUrl.ToString();
    oDataTable.Rows.Add(oDataRow);
    oDataTable.AcceptChanges();

  • Special Character in Filename script - how do I escape it.

    Hello All. I'm attempting to call a file in sqlplus on a linux box. The file name has a special character.
    ex: i$_my_script.sql
    I've attempted to use
    @i$_my_script.sql
    @i\$_my_script.sql
    @i\\$_my_script.sql
    @"i$_my_script.sql"
    @'i$_my_script.sql'
    @'i\$_my_script.sql'
    All to no avail. I could have sworn I'd called a similar file with $ in the filename before but now I can't get it to work. Preference would be to no have a special character in the filename ... but the file is coming in from a source I don't have control over. I could rename the file but the file resides in a source control system and I'd prefer not to have to rename it every time I want to compile it.
    Thanks in advance.
    edit<<Also as a note I can see the file in sqlplus by sending ls to the command line as follows:
    SQL> ! ls i\$_my_script.sql
    which returns
    i$_my_script.sql
