Spotlight opening slow

Spotlight is very laggy lately. I am not having any problems with indexing, but whenever I press command space there is usually a 2 second delay before the actual search bar pops up. This is extremely annoying when I use spotlight for everything. So how do I reset it or fix the lag? I have already rebooted my computer plenty of times, it works for a few minutes and then always lags again later. I have also already tried re-indexing my entire hard drive. Nothing works. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Update to the last version of Lion.

New Lion Feature. If you quit an app that has open windows and documents, it will restore state when restarted; in other words, reopen all the stuff it that was previously open. That's why the new document gets bumped underneath the old.
If too avant-garde for your tastes, visit the General pane in System Preferences and uncheck "Restore windows when quitting...".

It opened fine for me, sometimes it takes the Apple servers a while to respond so may be at that end the problem lies not with your internet connection. That is why people suggest other hosts for commercial sites. I like your site - very good layout.

  • Excel 2007 and Smartview 11.1 file open slow

We are in the process of upgrading to HFM system 11.1 and smartview 11.1.1.3 and as part of this process we are starting to use Excel 2007. I am encountering an interesting problem when opening files in Excel 2007 using smartview 11.1 and I am wondering if any one else has seen this problem and found a solution.
First I converted an excel 2003 file to excel 2007 and saved the file as an xlsx file type. Then I am able to open the file and it would take about 30 seconds to open the file. The file has about 15,000 formulas on for spreadsheets. If I click on each spreadsheet individually and use the "Refersh" button I can save the file in about 10 seconds and then close the file. When I open the file again it will open in 30 seconds. Now using the same file I click "Refresh All" and the file processes fine. I am able to save and close the file in about 10 seconds. However, when I try to open the file again it takes about 20 minutes to open, and then 20 minutes to close.
This only happens with two or three files. I have another file that is 40 spreadsheets and about 3,000 formulas that is not affected when I click Refresh or Refresh All.
    Any help would be apperciated.

    Hi
On metalink i found some notes about this issure
    "Background
SmartView communicates over HTTP using .NET. This just means that requests and responses are sent in a standard XML format that is tucked in the HTTP headers. The mechanism is the same as when your internet browser requests a file or submits a form (simplification). A standard Microsoft component that is part of Internet Explorer is used for this.
There are three components (four if you include the network) in a SmartView refresh:
    -the client
    -the web server
    -the HFM application server
It is easiest to troubleshoot when they are on separate machines. (Running SmartView on the server to see whether it works better is a useful test to see what effect the network is having, but doesn't show any other bottlenecks.) If you run Task Manager on these 3 machines showing the Performance tab, you will see initial activity on the client as Excel clears the cells and the request is converted into XML. Then you see the web server get busy as it receives and parses the request. Then the application server is busy as it send the data, then the web server is busy as it compiles the results into XML again, and finally the client parses the XML, pushes the data into cells and runs an Excel calculation. This last stage is the longest of all. Overall, it is typical to see the client doing 90-95% of the work, so client performance is a very important factor. Look out for Excel's memory usage increasing and RAM becoming in short supply. Often, user dissatisfaction with refresh times can be alleviated by giving them more RAM or a faster PC.
The situation we are dealing with here, however, is when the chain of events described above is interrupted. In this case, you will see the client or the web server wait in vain for a response from the next machine in the chain. The case of invalid XML is similar, but the response is truncated so that the XML is not well-formed when it arrives. XML consists of matching pairs of tags and is not well-formed when a closing tag is missing. This can be caused by certain network settings such as packet size (see later). The end result in either case is the same: as Excel cleared the cells before sending the request, cells are left blank or with zeroes.
Your job now is to work out why the particular component is failing.
    Client
Check the HTTP time out in the registry:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]\
    "ReceiveTimeout"=dword:00dbba00
    "KeepAliveTimeout"=dword:002BF20
    "ServerInfoTimeout"=dword:002BF20
The time-out limit is five minutes for versions 4.0 and 4.01 and is 60 minutes for versions 5.x and 6. Also, the time-out limit is 30 seconds for Windows Internet Explorer 7. To change the settings, add the above keys. The above values are hexadecimal, not decimal and correspond to 18000 milliseconds (3 minutes) and 240 minutes for the receive time-out. See
    - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813827
    - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181050
Once you make those changes, my recommendation is that you reboot the client machine.
    Web server
Look for errors in logs showing that the web app didn't respond/disconnected or timed out waiting for another application (i.e. the HFM application server). Eliminate load balancers etc. during testing in order to isolate the problem and to ensure that the user always goes to the same web server otherwise, logs can be hard to interpret. See also the IIS Tuning Guide for IIS settings. We cannot recommend particular settings, as each client must establish the optimal settings for their own environment after performance testing. If necessary, engage the services of a suitably qualified consultant.
    Application Server
HFM application server performance is very dependent on whether the data is already in RAM or not. One symptom, where the first refresh fails but the second one succeeds, is probably a sign that the cache needed to be populated and once that had been done (by the first refresh) it went faster. HFM loads whole subcubes (Scenario, Year, Value and Entity) into cache, so asking for lots of accounts in the same subcube is fast, but asking for lots of entities will inevitably slow things down as it runs out of RAM and starts unloading subcubes to make room for more. The HFM event log (HsvEventLog.log) shows this happening, but don't forget that the messages you see are a normal consequence of the way HFM works and are not a problem unless you see a hugely elevated number of them during the period the refresh occurs. Another sign would be page file thrashing.
If there are several servers in a cluster, use sticky sessions in HFM to make sure tests always go the same server, or hit one server directly rather than using the cluster.
Solutions here involve giving more RAM to the server (probably not possible because of the 2 GB limit) and changing the worksheet design to restrict the number of subcubes accessed. A separate consolidation server, so that reads are not competing with intensive consolidations and calculations, would be a good thing.
    Network
To find out if packets get fragmented, use
    ping -l size -f
to send a big packet with the 'don't fragment' flag. E.g.
    Ping -l 1024 -f oracle.com
If you see a reply like Reply from 141.146.8.66: bytes=1024 time=200ms TTL=245 then the size you specified is below the packet limit of the network. But if you use, for example, 2000 in place of 1024, you get Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set, then you know you have exceeded the limit. Combine this investigation with a Fiddler trace (https://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/) to see what size data messages are being sent and received.
    Troubleshooting Guidance
If you seriously want to go into this in more detail, then it will take a considerable effort on your and your IT Department's part. My general advice would be:
    1. During this process, fix your environment so that it is predictable. Register a single HFM application server and connect to that. Use a single web server and don't go through Apache or any other redirector. Make sure we know which machine to go to for logs. This would be a temporary measure and it doesn't stop the other users using the full, load balanced system so long as it doesn't involve your server.
    2. As far as possible keep other users from using it during testing, unless you are specifically testing for performance under load. We want to see what activity is due to SmartView and not random other jobs.
    3. Use PerfMon on all three machines: client, web server and application server.
    4. Clear Logs before testing and note the times of each test so the logs can be correlated.
    5. Log CPU activity, memory usage, network throughput, page faults, thread count etc. I'm no expert on this so get advice from someone who is.
    6. In addition to the performance logs, from the IIS Server get:
    * HTTP.SYS Error Log - %windir%\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR (Default location; configurable)
    * IIS Website Log - %windir%\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC# (Default location; configurable)
    * Event Log (both System and Application) in EVT and TXT (tab separated) formats
    7. From HFM Application server get:
    * HsvEventLog.log (in <HFM install>\Server working Folder)
    * Event Log (both System and Application) in EVT and TXT (tab separated) formats
    8. Be aware of all timeout settings in your environment (i.e. IIS & the network) and time your tests. This can show whether it is an ASP timeout, script timeout, client side timeout or whatever. Note that the Web Session Timeout setting for SmartView in HFM's Server and Web Configuration is a separate issue from IIS timeouts. Web Session Timeout controls the length of idle time before SmartView makes the user log in again. Default 20 mins.
    9. Run Fiddler traces to directly observe the XML and check for HTTP failures.

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.

  • ITunes opens slow, won't sync iPad; Windows 7 64-bit

    Hello all,
    The issue is as follows:
I try to run iTunes and it is extremely slow to open. My task manager shows an iTunes.exe process but nothing happens for about an hour.  Eventually it will open and as a music player, operates just fine.  However, when I try to sync my iPad, the device is never recognized by iTunes.
The iPad operates perfectly well besides the lack of syncing.
    My hardware/software is as follows:
    PC: Dell Latitude E6510 (laptop)
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
iTunes: most recent (I have recently downloaded and re-installed, as I note below)
iPad: the new iPad WiFi 16GB (iOS 6.0.1).
    What I have tried:
Uninstall iTunes, restart, re-install iTunes.  Loads quickly maybe once (little fuzzy since this was the first thing I tried, a while ago).  Quickly erodes into the same problematic behavior.
Uninstall, CCleaner remove all unused registry items, restart, re-install.  Same oucome.
Uninstall, CCleaner **, delete all apple folders in /program files, /program files (x86), and /programdata, restart, re-install.  Same outcome.
I also tried a combination of disabling and restarting apple services like Bonjour; this did not help.  I don't recall what order I used, but it was suggested in another discussion on this forum re: the same type of problem.  Same outcome.
I have tried a few other things that I found via google that I cannot find quickly right now.  One of them was a Microsoft Fixit (I realize this is mostly unhelpful).
    Any ideas?
Any other info I have left out that would help?

Well that at least is a reasonable workaround. There are no major differences between the two versions other than going full 64-bit and tidying up Get Info a bit.
    tt2
It was, for a day.  Then I needed to spend an evening trying to fix it
But ... I think I have it working.  Via the less than reasonable method of uninstalling all Apple software from the PC (again) then nuking directories from orbit before reinstalling.
For anyone following/finding this thread, I did so being sure to follow the order at Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates and uninstalling "Apple Application Support (64-bit)" before "Apple Application Support (32-bit)" then uninstalling QuickTime (again) for good measure.
I then deleted the following directories:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
    C:\ProgramData\Apple
    C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer
    C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Apple
    C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer
    E:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Apple
    E:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer
    E:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer
    and now it seems okay.
I've not yet reinstalled iCloud Control Panel or QuickTime, though.  And I'm fairly annoyed with Apple for lack of quality here, this is a point upgrade for goodness sake, and it's not like they couldn't afford QA.
    Thanks for the help, tt2.

  • PDFs From Spotlight Open Up BIG In Preview

Try searching for something in Spotlight, and click on one of the PDF Documents results. When it opens in Preview it will be zoomed in, up to as much as 200%, with the searched for term highlighted in yellow.
Is this how its supposed to work? Are PDFs ALWAYS supposed to appear zoomed in, if you've searched for them using Spotlight? This didn't use to happen in Tiger.

I have the same issue. In Tiger I think Spotlight would enter your search term into Preview's search field but Tiger's version of Preview didn't zoom in. It was only a minor hassle to clear the search field to use the document.
I've looked at Preview's preferences and Spotlight's preferences and haven't found anything helpful.
My suggestion is to use the following mouse clicks after opening the document via Spotlight.
Click the clear button to empty the search field in Preview.
Click the "=" icon in the Zoom Icon set.
Click the zoom to fit icon to display a full page of the document.
You may have to customize the icons by using the tool under the View menu to get these icons displayed for you.

  • Planning web form opening slow

    Hi All,
I have a web form which consist of 12 dimensions and in the forms I have referred the stored data members. These stored data members are level zero members in hierarchy  and the form  is opening fine. When I have moved this stored data member from level zero to level five, the form is taking more time to open.
Problem: After changing a position of the member from level zero to level five, it is taking more time to open the form. Still it is stored data member and the IDescendants have many dynamic calc members.
Could some one explain me why it is taking more time being a stored data member. Many thanks in advance.

If there are many dynamic calc members or a member that relies on dynamic calcs then maybe it is taking a long time to calculate them which is causing the slow performance.
It is probably worth having a read of the following support doc for designing forms - Hyperion Planning Data Form Design Considerations (Doc ID 779502.1)

  • Applications Opening Slow - Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my "27 iMac to Mountain Lion, and ever since, the applications have been opening up very slowly. It takes almost 15 seconds to open up Safari and such.
    Help?
    Thanks.

Hey, I went from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion the other day.  At first, I was noticing a lot of slowing performance (opening apps, Safari, start-up time, etc).  However, after using it for a few days, I'm noticing that it's picking up speed back to normal.  I also have a 27" iMac, mid-2010 version (3.2GHz i3).  Hopefully it does the same for you. I read somewhere that it takes the system time to get acclaimated to the new software. Also, I noticed there was a software update after I installed.  Was pretty fast download/install, and like I said, things seem to be running a lot smoother now. Good luck!

  • Premiere Pro CS6 opening slow when connected to slow network.

I recently setup a user with his computer running behind a VPN router so that he could work from home. The VPN router is used to give him access to local resources.
A strange thing started to happen with Premiere where it would be very slow to open. Either it hangs on the splash screen for a few seconds to a few minutes or the splash screen loads normally but when the program opens, it is just white for a few minutes until it finally opens. If I try to click on the program Windows tells me that the program is not responding. Being that the premiere was working fine before putting the PC behind the VPN router, I feel like it had to be a network thing. I had the user momentarily unplug the Ethernet cable from the router and Premiere loaded up quick like it normally does. So when Premiere opens, it must be trying to access some local resources.
The problem is I cannot figure out what that is. I went through all of the preferences and nothing is set to use a network resource. Media cache is set to us a local SSD. What else could Premeire be trying to access to launch?

Premiere communicates with Adobe as it opens. I'm assuming it is verifying that you have an active account/aren't pirating the software. On my computer the maximum bandwidth usage is 1Mbps (that's bit not byte), so unless your VPN is incredibly slow, this probably isn't the issue. Maybe there's some firewall interaction that is limiting Premiere's ability to talk to Adobe as it launches?

  • Spotlight open folder size

Hi, upon using spotlight to open a directory, is there a way to make it always open the subsequent folder (within finder) a specific length? Default is pretty small.
    Thanks!

There is no way that I have discovered. Settings are now specific to an open window and any child windows. If you use the same search window such as the Finder's window then that view is saved. To do so you need to use the Finder's toolbar search field.
