Spry Menu-overlapping submenu items

Hello,
I am new to Dreamweaver. I created a horizontal spry menu and one of my items has a submenu which contains two items. When I look at the page in live view or preview it in a browser, the two submenu items overlap. How do I fix this? I have tried playng around with the margin values for "ul menubarHorizontal ul ul" but I do not see any changes. Please help me! Thank you so much!

  • Help with vertical spry menu bar submenu displaying incorrectly!

    I’m new to Dreamweaver and am learning as I go. I am having a problem with the vertical spry menu bar submenu in the Live View. When I scroll over the spry menu bar option that has a submenu, the submenu appears in the upper right hand corner of my screen. (My menu bar is going down the left hand side.) However, when I preview it in Internet Explorer it looks fine after I allow the Java Script to run or the Active X controls, which my browser usually automatically blocks. (The browser just displays a small message along the top and I click on it to allow it.) To get it to do this much, I had to play around with the CSS for the spry menu bar a little bit.
    Before, when I clicked on the Live View option, a small message ran along the top in Dreamweaver saying it couldn’t find the Flash Plugin and asked me to download the most recent FlashPlayer, which I did twice. It continued to say that and then I just closed that message that kept popping up, but I think that has something to do with the problem. I then researched that problem in the Spry Framework Help and Dreamweaver Help, but couldn’t find a solution that worked. (Someone had posted a link for downloading the Flash Player for Netscape Navigator, but that didn’t seem to do anything.)
    Please also note that I am using one of Dreamweaver’s pre-built layouts. I don’t know if that makes a difference with this problem.
    How do I fix this problem so that it displays correctly in the LiveView? And will the message that I get on my browser about allowing blocked content appear on other people’s computer when they open my website?

    IE is a big problem child among browsers.  Don't use it as your default browser.
    For best results, build your site to display & perform well in the web standards browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari & Opera.   If it works in one, it should work pretty much the same in all of them.
    After you're satisfied with how your site looks in the good browsers, then test in IE.  If needed, add hacks or conditional comments to make IE behave.  There are many web sites that discuss known bugs in IE and how to work around them.
    Lastly, the active X nag screens only appear locally.  Once deployed on the remote server, you won't see them.
    For better answers to your layout questions, we need to see your page.  Can you post a URL?

    Sorry if it's something really basic...I'm a noob to web design.
    Thanks!

    Don't use reserved words in JS
    var event = new Spry.Data.XMLDataSet("events.xml", "catalog/event", {sortOnLoad: "date", sortOrderOnLoad: "descending"});
    event is such a reserved word. If you change this to event1 then all is well.
    I hope this helps.

  • Spry Menu with submenu border?

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm a bit of a newbie, and I am designing a website with a spry menu (which I have since found out probably wasn't the best way to go) and I have hit a hurdle which I can't fix or find the solution to anywhere. I'm hoping it might be easy for you guys.
    I have attached a pic of the problem, one menu item has a submenu, this is the 'About' menu, as you can see, it has a border top and bottom that I can't seem to find in the code in order to get rid of it. If anyone could let me know how to fix this I'll be extremely grateful!
    Also, any suggestions of better menu methods would be appreciated.
    Have a nice day

  • How to make Spry menu and submenu backgrounds different

    Hi all. I have a horizontal spry menu bar, and i'm using a gradient image for the background of the main menu, but I want the submenu to just be a solid color. I figure i should just be able to use css for this solid BG, but I can create an image no problem if need be. I just think it looks unprofessional to have multiple segments of a horizontal gradient stacked vertically. I know this is possible, the second to last example on this link demonstrates but doesn't explain:

    I would greatly appreciate any available help on this subject!  Thanks again!

    Thanks for asking, no that is not my complete css file. Those are only *additional* lines to place adjacent to existing styles in your "SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css", but in each case as the next style, in the location I have indicated. Here, I'll put my complete file here for you:

    The idea with putting the new styles *after* the original styles is that they are logically similar to but 'sub' styles to existing styles. In fact, you could probably put them way at the bottom, but if you wanted to edit them you might not find them again easily. I was trying to keep similar style rules together.

  • Spry menu bar submenu disappears when cursor changes

    Hello.
    I've been working with a spry menu bar for some time, but when I expand the submenu and then move the cursor over some text on the page (where the sub-menu is on top of), the submenu disappears. In other words, it seems that when the cursor changes from a pointer to a text cursor, the submenu disappears.
    Can anyone tell me how to prevent that from happening?

    LICAP Webmaster wrote:

    Sorry, but without a link to your online page, it's a time-wasting, error-prone guessing game.
    If you put your test page and all dependent files online, and post a link here, we will gladly check that:
        Your server is working
        That all required HTML code is correct
        That your folder hierarchy is correct
        That all required dependent files  (HTML, CSS, JS, Images etc.) are uploaded to proper folders
        That Javascript Versions are correct
        That link paths are all correct and case sensitive
    Sounds like your submenus may be positioned with a small gap from your top-level links

  • Spry menu - horizontal - submenu default open

    i want to have a submenu of one tab open by default on one page rather then when you hover over it.  how can i do that?  in the css?

    All right. Add a class to the ul you want to be open, as
    <ul class="open">
    Then add a style to your stylesheet:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul.open
          {left: 0;
           top: 95%;
    You should not need to add id's to actual list items (unless you want to specifically change their colors...)
    By giving the submenu (the ul inside the ul.MenuBarHorizontal) a left:0;, you are pulling it in from left-field, where it had been at -1000em and also dropping it to nearly below (95%) the top menu.
    You're not tricking the javascript. The javascript will still be working. But the visible submenus will just already be visible instead of hiding and being brought onstage by the javascript. If it's any consolation, the javascript could care less...
    If you are working with templates, you can give each submenu ul an id, give the body an editable attribute (so you can change the body id for each page) and set up something in the CSS that controls, for instance:
    <body id="contactuspage">
    <ul class="MenuBarHorizontal>
         <li>...
              <ul id="contactus">
    and in the CSS:
    #contactuspage ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul#contactus,
    #aboutuspage ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul#aboutus
         {left: 0;
           top: 95%;
    So all you have to do is make sure you have set the body id (it could be the id of the container for the menubar...not the menubar itself, though) for each page, and the "show submenus" will automatically apply to the  submenus that correspond to the page.
    Beth
    I'm not sure that this works in all browsers. I'm getting patchy results...It appears that you will have to play with the "top:95%;" call...Internet Explorer drops the top of the submenu to 95% down the WINDOW/viewport, and not just to the bottom of the top menu item. If you have a set height on the top menu item, give that as the value for top.
    OK. It looks pretty solid, if you take my comment in the previous paragraph to heart.
    Have fun with it!

  • Safari debug menu: Security submenu items greyed out

    I'm using Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.9.2), and have activated the Debug menu.
    Under the Security submenu, all of the options are greyed out. I need to "enable Lax security checks" because I'm having trouble with certificates on a particular website.
    If someone knows the equivalent terminal command, it would be much appreciated.
    I've tried repairing permissions, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist, and resetting safari. Any other suggestions?

    Hi Richard!
    I'm not sure about the Security items in the Debug menu...but about the page that refreshes try to delete the cookies associated with that site. I had a similar problem before and I contacted the help for that site and followed that suggestion and it's worked ever since. Maybe it will for you too?

  • Spry Menu Bar Submenu not dropping.

    Hi,
    I,ve got a problem with the Spry Bar Menu Bar....The Submenu is not dropping when I preview the page in a browser. Would be great if somebody could help me out here.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hello Wiebke,
    to my knowledge that's not a reason. Murray has often answered to ftp problems, last thing I've noticed was: "If the files are being uploaded to the correct location, then they must overwrite the existing files in that location.  If you are not seeing those changes in the browser, then you must be looking at a stale page in the browser - dump your local browser cache and try again.  So, make sure that the files are being properly uploaded, and that your browser is fully refreshed." and from osgood "Have you tried an alternative ftp upload client other than Dreamweaver?".
    The last hint is that what I prefer. In all in these cases I'm not a friend of a detailed troubleshooting. It is one of the reasons that I prefer an external FTP program. The difficulties with which you have to fight encourage me in this opinion, not least because we always search for experts, we don't charge a "jack of all trades".
    For this reason, to manage, for example, several websites or to upload my files and sometimes for the opposite way, for a necessary download from my server or to use a "a site-wide synch", I'm using FileZilla. It simply looks easier for me to keep track of all operations precisely and generate or reflect easily the desired tree structure.
    Above all, FileZilla has a feature (translation from my German FileZilla) called "compare file list". Here it's possible to use file size or modification time as a criterion. There is also the possibility to "hide identical files", so that only these files which you want to redact remain visible.
    And even if it means you have to install a new program, I am convinced that there is an advantage. Here is the link to get it and where you can read informations about how it works:
    http://filezilla-project.org/ and
    http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Tutorial#Using_the_site_manager
    Mac: Mac OS X
    http://filezilla-project.org/download.php
    Of course, you also need all the access data to reach your server.
    Good luck

  • Problem with spry menu bar position:fixed?

    Hello technical heros,
    I'm having trouble with my website's spry menu bar... here is the site.
    As you can see, when you scroll down, the spry menu overlaps the header fixed block, which the rest of the content smoothly scrolls under. How do I tell the spry object to do the same?
    I also want the sidebar 2 (menu bar) to be a fixed block like my header and footer. I know how to do this, but when I change the css, it throws my spry menu over to the left of the page, ontop of my sidebar 1.
    Help, please!!

    Hi,
    Have a look here: http://www.w3schools.com/Css/css_positioning.asp
    I hope this helps.

  • Can Spry Menu subs display upwardly?

    I would like to know if it is possible for a horizontal spry
    menu's sub items to load upwardly instead of the normal dropdown
    method? The client would like their menu at the bottom of the page
    instead of the top, so the sub items would need to load in an
    upward direction. If someone has managed to achieve this, can you
    please assist and if there's no chance of this happening, please
    let me know.
    Many thanks

    Its intended to be run locally so I dont have a link but here is the html for my index file. As you can see I have set the top row at 200 so it will display all the items in the menu bar when a user hovers over one of the bars. What I am trying to do is eliminate the white space by setting the top frame to around 60 but doing so you wont be able to see the drop down items. Make sense?

  • How to position spry submenu items ABOVE main horizontal menu

    I am building a site for a new client. (Using DW CS4) I have

  • Spacing of Spry Menu submenu items, and inserting background images

    Hiya, need a bit of help, could someone possibly guide me with this?
    I've created a Spry Menu in DW CS5 - so far, so good.. However I'm pretty new to CSS Styles so need pointers at what to change to get the result I need. I've created the spry menu, however the submenu dropdown items are not flush to the ones above, theres a 1px horz gap between each item and while it looks okay, its particularly visible in Firefox and Chrome and would prefer no spacing at all..
    The live site is at http://www.ebm.co.uk/2011site/indexnavbar2.html
    if you take a look at the drop down menu bar you'll see what i mean - what do I need to do to remove the spacing?
    I also want to replace the solid colour with images, where do I specify the images for 1) top menu item 2) submenu item and 3) 'hover' item, and do I need to make any areas transparent?
    Any advice would be much appreciated.. thanks!

  • Spry Menu Bar - Freezing the Menu item in hover when clicking a submenu item

    Hi,
    I am trying to add a feature to a verticle spry menu bar that freezes the menu item or "parent" (to apear to be hovered) when clicking one of the parents sub-menu items. I want to do this so that users can know how they arrived at the page they're on.
    Thanks for your help,
    -Shiva

    To look at your intention in a different way,
    Hover over a submenu item
    Parent item is colored/indicated
    Submenu item is colored/indicated
    Click on the submenu item
    New page opens
    Parent item "remains" colored/indicated on the new page
    There are three or four ways to do this, depending on your site setup, but one basic concept to understand. The emphasis on the Parent menu item is totally independent of whether you got to the new page via the menu or by some other means. The emphasis will always be there, though it will appear to be connected to your clicking on the menu!
    Say you have a menu with two Parent menu items, flowers and trees.
    On the Flowers menu are submenus: Tulips, Roses, and Gardenias, On all three different Flowers pages (Tulips, Roses, Gardenias), the Flowers parent item will be emphasized.
    On the Trees menu are submenus: Oak, Maple, Spruce. On all three different Trees pages (Oak, Maple, Spruce), the Trees parent item will be emphasized.
    If you want to go in to each page individually, you can use a general indicator like id="localemphasis". (To emphasize more than one thing on a page, use a class instead of an id)
    Using this method, on the Tulips, Roses, and Gardenias pages, put id="localemphasis" on the Flowers parent menu item.
    On the Oak, Maple, and Spruce pages, put id="localemphasis" on the Trees parent menu item.
    To control the emphasis from the CSS stylesheet, you won't need to go into each page, but you will ID each parent menu item.
    Give each 'category' (Flowers, Trees) page a body ID to match the category
    Every Flower page wants the Flower parent menu item emphasized, give all three Flower pages a body tag like this: <body id="flowers">
    LIkewise, every Tree page wants the Tree parent menu item emphasized, as <body id="trees">
    Within the menu itself and on ALL pages, give each parent menu item an id to correspond to its category
    <li id="flowers_m">Flowers</li>
    <li id="trees_m">Trees</li>
              I have added a "_m" to remind myself that it is the menu item's id. You might need to put the id on the <a> link if you have not used a list for your menu.
    In your CSS stylesheet,
         #flowers #flowers_m,
         #trees #trees_m  {background-color: red; color: white;}
    Please use your own code! White on red might not be your cup of tea...use the same styling as the "hover" styling you mention in your query.
    To interpret what we have just done, we have said
         make the background-color red and the text white
    for the parent menu item Flowers (id="flowers_m") when you are on a Flowers page (body id="flowers")
    and for the parent item Trees (id="trees_m") when you are on a Trees page (body id="trees").
    This emphasis is good feedback for your user...remember that for SEO purposes, you will also want to use actual HTML text to reinforce the page environment, that is, h1 titles like FLOWERS and TREES. That will provide more feedback for your user.

  • Different widths for Spry Menu Submenu items

    On the Customize this widget page for menus, a new style was
    suggested for submenu items, to make some of them less wide. This
    code below was suggested. How do we attach the new style to the
    submenu items? Clicking on each submenu text that's open, and
    applying the smaller style doesn't do it.
    Here is the code:
    ul.MySmallerSubMenu {
    width: 4em;

        font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

        font-weight: bolder;
    This interferes with the menu item list. If you change or delete the font-size, all should be well.
