Spyder2 Express or huey MEU101?

Anyone have a preference for one over the other?
Other opinions on a good color calibrator under $85.00 US?
I need to calibrate a 23" acer LCD monitor for photography.
I'm using Vista 32, Production Premium Suite CS3 & Lightroom 2.4 My printer is a HP 2610xi.

  • Buying a new desktop for Aperture

Good afternoon, everyone. I'm looking at purchasing a new desktop system to support my Aperture habit. I'm currently running on an original 2.0GHz black MacBook with 2GB of RAM. Aperture's pretty pokey. My company has a computer purchase assistance program wherein they pay for 20% of the purchase of a new system including software, memory, &c. The glitch is that the maximum monitor size they allow as part of that program is 22". In speaking with someone in HR today, it sounds like my purchase of a 24" iMac would probably not be allowed under that program. My out of pocket purchase price, including 4GB of RAM from OWC and add'l software, is $2,356.72 for the 2.8GHz 24" iMac and $1,557.92 for the 2.4GHz 20" iMac. (Similar configurations of a 2.6GHz 15" iMac and dual 2.6GHz Mac Pro with 20" display are $2,453.92 and $2,770.72 respectively.) I might be able to suck up a $400 difference between the 20" and 24" iMacs if I got the refund on the larger one, but $800 is just too much.
Wow, that's a lot of build-up. So, my question is, how well does Aperture run on the 2.4GHz 20" iMac? It seems like the jump from 2.4GHz C2D to 2.8GHz C2D "Extreme" is non-negligible, but Aperture also seems to be largely GPU-bound and both models have the same graphics setup. Performance aside, how is the display on the 20" iMac? Can it be reliably calibrated using the huey or Spyder2 Express? I really am an amateur, but I've come to the point where I need more horsepower to run Aperture and I would like to start doing some prints, so I'll need a display which can be reliably calibrated. I also want/need more screen real estate, but I'll get no matter which model I go with.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can throw my way...
    Brian

Brian, I'd take a long hard look at the Mac Pro before I'd go with the iMac. The problem is twofold: the graphics card, and the display itself. The glossy screen is gorgeous, but is not as easily calibrated as a matte screen. I also personally find a glossy screen fatiguing on the eyes, and not as suitable for fine photo work. Also, with a Mac Pro you can get a better graphics card like the xt1900 -- which you will surely need. I'm sure those with iMacs will chime in with their opinions -- but I thought I'd give you a tower perspective!
Whatever you do, definitely get 4g RAM.

  • What colour is your LR interface?! Help please!

    OK bear with me....
When I was running LR 1.0 my limited printing showed pretty good results, with a good match to my monitor, if a little dark.
Following a recent crash (running XP) I reinstalled and upgraded to LR 1.1, since which time my prints have been considerably darker.
I took this opportunity to calibrate my monitor with a Huey, and now have an LR interface (panels, grid, toolbar)which can best be described as a a dirty brown. I have changed the loupe background to black and this looks ok.
I haven't been able to print yet to see if all my efforts are in vain, but in the meantime....what colour is your interface?
    Best wishes
    Mike

    I noticed a similar problem.
My laptop's crappy ATI card didn't allow writing to the LUT when calibrating. To get around that I had to download some hacked drivers from driverheaven.net. It appeared to work, ie, monitor colors shifted slightly after calibration and when profile was loaded.
I noticed the reddish brown interface right away, and thought it looked nice... but when I looked at the LR book I had, the screen shots all appeared gray.
I loaded an image of a Color checker, and the squares that should be gray were that same reddish brown.
Using the same calibrator (spyder2 express) on my desktop, LR appears gray as it should. My conclusion was calibrator is working fine... but the crappy ATI graphics chip was the problem. I reverted back to my original drivers, and decided to leave laptop uncalibrated, as I figure that is better than having a profile that doesn't apply any changes to the screen; or a screwed up calibration in which it shifts the colors.
(Compaq and ATI were no help.) Compaq says I already have the latest driver. And ATI blames Compaq, saying laptop manufacturers are responsible for updating their drivers, then for no reason tells me to avoid profanity and cuts off communication with me... I blame both and my future purchases will exclude both from consideration.
Curious, what video chip does your computer use, by the way?

  • Color Looks Different in Aperture Viewer Compared to Full Screen

The color in my photos looks different depending on how I view them. In Aperture's Viewer and in Photoshop Elements 6, it looks what I consider to be normal. In Aperture's Full Screen view, and in other applications such as Preview and Safari, the colors look super-saturated: much more vibrant than in real life.
The photos were imported into Aperture as JPEGs, directly from my camera. Previews are turned off in Aperture, and I have it set to export using sRGB. I'm using an external Dell display that's been calibrated with Spyder2 Express. Turning on Onscreen Proofing in Aperture (and trying different profiles) doesn't seem to change the display in the Viewer at all.
How can I make the color in the Viewer match the color in other applications? It's hard to edit when I can't accurately see what I'm doing.

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply! I didn't know there was such a thing as a default display, but after setting that to the external the photos look good again.
I guess I wasn't using the right search terms, but after reading your reply I was able to find this huge thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394928&start=0&tstart=0
It seems to me that this is an OS bug, because the images were displaying incorrectly in Preview, Safari, etc. Each display has been calibrated and has a ColorSync profile, and the OS knows which display the window is on, so it should be able to figure out which profile to use.

  • PSE 7 Screen Brightness

New to PSE7. I'm getting used to PSE7 and thought I saw an adjustment to screen brightness somewhere. Not image brightness and contrast.
I'm trying to adjust my new LCD HP laptop monitor to be less bright and am having no luck finding a way to do that. Can't find manual adjustment buttons or adjustments from Vista. Want to set temperature and gamma.
The ultimate result I want is better printing since my prints aren't matching my monitor.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Sandra,
    > thought I saw an adjustment to screen brightness somewhere.
You may be thinking of Edit > Preferences > General > User Interface Brightness. This simply adjusts the color scheme of the user interface (from grey to black). It has no effect on how images are displayed.
    > I'm trying to adjust my new LCD HP laptop monitor to be less bright and am having no luck finding a way to do that. Can't find manual adjustment buttons or adjustments from Vista. Want to set temperature and gamma.
Most of the graphics chipsets in laptops (Intel, nVidia, ATI) will come with a utility that let you adjust the brightness and other attributes of the display. For example, the Intel chipset utility lets you adjust the brightness and gamma (but not temperature). Usually these utilities can be accessed via an icon in the System Tray in the lower-right corner of the desktop. The Intel utility can also be accessed by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Graphics Properties; the others are probably similar.
    > The ultimate result I want is better printing since my prints aren't matching my monitor.
Though you can try manual adjustments using the graphics chipset utility, it could be very hard to make a significant improvement. Youd be better off calibrating your display using a device like the Spyder2Express:
    http://www.amazon.com/ColorVision-Spyder2-Express-Win-Mac/dp/B000ES4PYU/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UT F8&s=software&qid=1235362706&sr=8-1
There are other low-priced devices as well.
Note, however, that many laptop displays cant be calibrated very well. If thats the case with yours, then youd have to get an external display (which youd calibrate) for your print-sensitive editing.

  • Something weird about my photoshop cs3 in VISTA

    hey everyone
the problem that i have is just weird i don't event know how to describe in words..
    ok
when i open ANY image with photoshop cs3 in my VISTA, the picture just project/display the image like little smoking teeth yellow color in side the window of photoshop.
just as what you see in the picture :
    http://i32.tinypic.com/2eflwrr.jpg
i captured the homepage of adobe.com and paste into photoshop
it automatically turn into the "smoking teeth yellow color"
    when i save as .jpg
    it turn back to normal
    http://i28.tinypic.com/2s6lsg5.jpg
which mean it just project/display the image like little smoking teeth yellow color in side the of photoshop.
can someone tell me how can it change back to normal~~
photoshop cs3 works just fine in my window xp
    but in VISTA....
    smoking teeth yellow color..
    sigh

calibrating requires a hardware calibration utility. if you have an LCD monitor, make sure that the utility you get supports LCD calibration.
some names of hardware kits you can get include ColorVision Spyder/Spyder2 and Pantone Huey, but there are others out there as well.
Note that you may have installed updates via Windows Update that installed an ICC profile for your monitor, as this is a new thing with Vista. ICC profiles that are provided by a monitor manufacturers do not contain the same information as an ICC profile created by a calibration utility. to test if this is the problem, launch Photoshop and you might get a warning saying "The monitor profile 'profile name' appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software." Clicking the "Ignore Profile" button will prevent Photoshop from using this profile and causing the discoloration. If you do not see this warning, open the PS preferences by clicking the 'Edit->Preferences..>General' menu option, click the "Reset All Warning Dialogs" button at the bottom, then restart Photoshop.

  • Can't get color right when scanning & printing

Hi all. I'm having an interesting (and frustrating!) problem with colour and scanning...
I have a new Brother mfc-9840cdw, and am scanning across the network using it. I find that on some Macs black text and gray shading has a distinct green cast both on the screen and when printed back to the mfc. My main iMac screen has been profiled using a Spyder2 Express, and has this green problem. However, on a Macbook Pro (MBP) scans are the correct colour and print properly. Interestingly, if I take a jpg file produced via a scan on the MBP, open it in Preview on my iMac then print it in colour, it takes on the green cast. Conversely, if I take a file produced by the iMac and print it on the MBP, it prints properly. Same file, same drivers, same settings, everything. This has me really confused! I can't see how the same file can print differently to the same printer using the same driver. I've tried Brother colour and Colorsync colour in the driver settings, all to no avail.
I notice that in the "Adjust image" settings for the TWAIN driver, there are options to use a colorsync profile "Brother sRGB profile". This doesn't help either. A profile never gets embedded in a resultant jpg file, according to Preview.
Any ideas why I'm seeing this weird behaviour?

Have you made sure you are scanning in B&W? This sounds like you are scanning it in color -- black takes on a green cast sometimes when scanned in color.
    Good luck

  • Macbook Pro - Yellow Hues

My new Intel Macbook Pro arrived yesterday. I bought a 15" Matte screen 2.4GHZ model.
I opened it up in the evening after work and (when comparing the colours alongside my current 15" G4 Powerbook) was really aware of how Yellow the screen was. Granted I need to look at this screen under daylight conditions or office lighting but it is definitely way more yellow than my current PB.
I have been aware of lots of people in thee forums discussing Yellow banding or Hues at the bottom of the display but mine doesn't seem to have any real banding or areas. BUT - i do notice that it is a lot more yellow than i expected.
My questions to those who may know are :
Is this yellow hue normal for these type of displays (LED backlight) ?
What is the best color profile for me to select ? (e.g. sRGB)
What images are best for me to test my screen out to really put it to the test ? (e.g. stripes ?)
Is there any other things I can do to ensure the display is at its best (e.g. download alternative color profiles) ? If so - how do i install them ?
Thanks for any help - i'm hesitant to take it back but if I have a machine that is not 100%/not displaying the way it should then i will. BUt my problem is I don't know if I do have a machine that is 100% or not !

    Interesting.
I've had two MBP's here, both with LG displays. Neither had a yellow band at the bottom and both where noticeably yellow all over. Yes of course they're yellow when looked at from the side-that's different though. Straight on the whites are yellow. It's pretty obvious when placed next to other displays. (Apple cinema display, and regular Macbooks) No amount of calibration can get rid of it. I used an Eye-One Display2 and a Spyder2 express. The yellow comes from the yellow coating on the LED backlights themselves. Maybe there's just too much of it?
It's interesting to hear that they declared it DOA at the Apple Store. I was just about to send my second one back for a refund, since I figured it was just the state of these LED's. Maybe I'll bring mine in too if there is a fix.
BTW, the ones I saw at the apple store were yellow like this too.

  • Colour Cast in Adobe products

    Hi all.
I am sure someone out there can help me. I have installed CS, CS2 and now LR2.3, and every time I install an Adobe product, I struggle against reddish or orangish colour casts in my images. The same images opened in a variety of other progams do not show this colour cast.
The following link shows an NEF image converted to greyscale in LR 2.3. If I keep it as a colour image and completely desaturate it, it has the same colour.
Can anyone explain the colour cast, and how to ger rid of it. If you look at the thumbnails, you will see ther predominately warm cast they all have.
    Here is the link:
    http://www.jomp-photographics.com/colour_cast.jpg
    Thanks in advance.
    John

It may have been your Corel software rather than a wrong monitor profile from the manufacturer that caused your issue, Johnny. I had a similar problem when LR1 came out and it was caused by a color management profile that loaded into Windows at bootup that I had completely forgotten was installed when I first installed Corel software, and it messed LR's color up.
But I found the software eyeball calibration programs including PS Gamma to be inadequate. I mean, try it, sure, but if your results are still disappointing, especially when you try to match what you see on your monitor to what you get from a printer, do yourself a favor and get a hardware calibrator. You can spend hundreds of dollars for them, and I'm sure in many cases the expensive ones are worth every penny, just as you can justify expensive monitors and printers too for critical photo work, but my budget is much more modest. Still I found the hardware Spyder2 Express (currently $62 on amazon) color and gamma monitor calibrator to be an excellent value and
way more effective matching monitor to printer output in Lighhtroom than the do-it-yourself free online and built-in software calibrators. I saved more in photo ink and paper in not having to redo print jobs with different settings to get printed photos to look right than I spent for the Spyder2.
Not everybody likes them, as you'll see in Amazon reviews. You have to read S2E's readme file and follow the directions to the letter, with absolutely no shortcuts, to get good results with these, including being careful before calibrating to restore monitor defaults and set a 6500K color temperature, and have the monitor warmed up for one hour and the colorimeter warmed up for five minutes, and the room darkened with no light hitting the monitor as you calibrate; don't just try to use a hardware calibrator out of the box or follow a quick-and-dirty plug-and-pray approach as it would seem you could do, or they will disappoint, too, in my experience. Because I have a consumer-priced LCD monitor, and they are
not good on color and gamma accuracy as a rule, I do still sometimes have to make minor adjustments to monitor settings after calibrating or minor changes to printer settings to match print to monitor, but it's much closer using hardware calibration than not.

  • Which  is better calibration device: Spyder2 or Huey?

Which monitor calibration device do you prefer? Spyder2 or Huey, or something else?
Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   23-inch Apple Cinema Display

You are probably better off looking for an online review comparing the two online.
I went through this 3 months ago when I was looking for a Hardware Calibrator. So, I can speak to this from my own experience between an EyeOne-2 and a Spyder2.
For example, of the reviews I have read between the Syder2 and GreyTagMacbeth, the Spyder is consitently mentioned as having more calibration options, but being insanely slow in calibration. The Eye-One has less calibration options, but is very fast. Both are very accurate. I now own the Eye-One and use it as part of my digital workflow for my photography businees.
Here are a couple of links to reviews for you:
    a) MacWorld (which I do not totally trust) - http://www.macworld.com/2005/03/reviews/monitorcalibrator/index.php
    b) DryCreek photo (a little out of date - 2005, but more accurate with detailed views on performance & accuracy) - http://drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitorcalibrationtools.htm
Hope that helps you a little.

  • Pantone's Huey vs ColorVision's Spyder2express

I am just starting to look into monitor color calibration products. I'd heard about Huey as being good, affordable and easy to use. Then while investigating further I found that there is an express version of Spyder (which seems to be the benchmark). Just wondering if anyone has tried these and can compare and/or recommend either of them. Any comments from those who have used either or both would really be appreciated.
    powerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a spyder2express, upgraded to a GretagMacbeth EyeOne, then got a Huey for free at a color seminar. My experiences:
The EyeOne is spot on perfect, and has the benefit of being able to profile not only monitors but scanners, cameras and printers for a completely synced color workflow. It can also ambient profile the color temperature of light sources and camera flashes... even projectors with an add-on.
The Spyder did an okay job of profiling my monitors, but I never felt it was as accurate as the EyeOne.
The Huey has a terribly clunky interface. It consistently profiled all of my monitors with a magenta cast. It's ambient light monitoring and screen re-caibration where annoying. I also felt like there was something not right about applying tiny suction cups directly to expensive LCD screens...
    I hope this helps.

  • SSRS Expression Month at a glance

I have a report that I am trying to regress the payment sums out month by month. I know how to do this in SQL, but no idea in SSRS. Below is what I would like the table to look like.
    Year                             Month
    Total Payments       Month1            Month2             Month 3
    2012                              1
    10,000.00                2000.00          2000.00            6000.00
                                         2
    15,000.00                5000.00           1000.00           9000.00
And this would go on. I have the report built to drill down by year and month and show the sum of the payments. What I can not figure out is how to break out the payments collected month by month. I hope this makes sense.

Okay after much playing with this I have starting having success. This is what I want to do.
    =sum(IIF(Fields!MPaidDate.Value = Month(Dateadd(DateInterval.Month, 1, Fields!Date_Recieved.Value))
    and Fields!YPaidDate.Value = Year(Fields!Date_Recieved.Value), Fields!Amount_Paid.Value,0))
My month 1 column I left out the dateadd and I got back the right values. But when I try to add 1 month with date add it returns false.
Why do you need to write conditional expressions like this?Isnt it enough to bring MONTH(datecolumn) as a field in your dataset and use matrix control in your report? Add year to rowgroup and Month to column group to get data split up into monthwise. And inside
data part add three columns to show your measure value ie.#of orders ,
        Balance
     &  Total Paid

  • In Photoshop Express, cannot sort images in album by filename in thumbnail view (for slideshow)l.

In Photoshop Express, I want images to appear sorted by filename.  In the "view as a table" it sorts fine.  When I revert to the thumbnail view, the arrangement is random.  The dropdown "show" list does not offer an option for showing by filename.  If I select the"custom" option, it means I would need to sort 300 images by filename MANUALLY (!!!), a job that a computer does in milliseconds.  Anyone with a solution?  Thanks.

fwiw, with my images in the 'Folder Location' view the photos are in order by their Windows filename. That is the same order as the hardcopy album the photos came from. So I then created a PSE Album. I selected all my photos and moved them into that album. The order of the pictures was retained in the Album. That worked out great. I wanted my PSE images to be in the same order. I thought I would do it with tags. But creating an album seems to work just fine.

  • Unable to capture via Blackmagic UltraStudio Express

    Hi,
I'm having trouble capturing into Premiere Pro via UltraStudio Express.
I have a macbook pro 15” retina, Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014,  Desktop Video 10.1.4 (installed after PP), Ultrastudio Express, Ultrastudio Mini Monitor, Media Express, DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite.
I can capture from a camera via SDI into Media Express.
I can use LiveView and get monitor output with Resolve.
In Premiere Pro preferences, Device Control I can see 'Blackmagic Device Control'.
But I can't get any capture in Premiere Pro.  Following the directions in Desktop Video Manual February 2014, as I setup a new project in Premiere Pro, I click on ‘Settings’ under ‘capture’, but get no feedback.  If I proceed into a project, go to capture, I see no video from the connected camera.
Any advice would be wonderful.  I’m trying to use this system for a green screen shoot on Monday.
    Herb

To my knowledge, if CC is up to date, it's up to date.  I checked and there are no updates.  Thanks.

  • BRF+ Message Log & "Rule as Expression"

    Hi colleagues,
I am quite new to BRFplus and have two questions:
    1) I would like to use a message log action in order to indicate errors. I tried to follow https://wiki.wdf.sap.corp/wiki/display/FDT/Message+Log   with method SET_APPLICATION_LOG_OBJECT, but I can't find the class this method belogns to. I also tried modelling a rule & action message log with help of the UI. My question is how can I log messages and where can I find them after the function is beeing processed?
    2) In every guide I can read something about rule expressions and even how to create them (e.g. http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/cc/85414842c8470bb19b53038c4b5259/frameset.htm), but in the workbench there is no possibilty of creating rules as expressions but only rules and rulesets (the rule is not part of the "Expression" node).
I hope somebody knows what I mean
Thanks a lot & kind regards,

Thanks a lot for your response!
Could you tell me why using rules and rulesets is not recommended for 7.01 ? This could be interesting for my bachelor thesis.
